Lute listened to the heavens drop soft indigo drizzle onto his tiled roof. It was early in the morningâhe had just returned from restocking his favorite leaves, and given the venerable Squat Frog teapot a nice washing. The dawn cool, if the rain will not ease, should give way to summerâs bright heat in the next hour.
"Iced teas and coffees," the spiral pondered out loud. "Although I imagine not everyone will find cold pu erh refreshing. Perhaps I should expand the menu and offer seasonal tastes. Fruit syrups, maybe?"
"Would adding frozen coffee be an option?"
Lute jumped and nearly dropped Squat Frog at the voice.
Grandloves was difficult to miss from the doorway of the coffee shop: a tall freckly blue dragon with black wings and bright eyes, clad in a rain cloak. The librarian of Clan Cloud Brush was humble in his presentation--no one would think he was a fullblooded heir of powerful progenitors. His youthful face was charming, and currently a bit embarrassed.
"Oh, my, I'm sorry I startled you! I should have knocked."
Lute laughed and wiped his hands off his apron. "No worries! Truthfully, I talk to myself out loud too often, that was on me. Come in from that rain and let me get your usual."
The usual was a medium roast coffee with honey and a pinch of cinnamon. Lute served the mug with a flourish, which made Grand smile.
âWhat brings you around these parts today?â
âJust wanted to see how you were going on,â the guardian grinned. âNita told me you had set up your space nicely, which was a relief. Cloud Brushâs borders can be as vague as they come, so it was good to hear you still managed to get customers.â
âSquat Frog Coffee House exists just as much for my pleasure as it does for treasure. How do you know Miss Nita? You seem close.â
âOh! Maybe she forgot to tell you? SheâsâŚwell, they might not say it out loud, but sheâs Zareenâs mate. They are very private.â
Luteâs eyes went wide. âNo, she didnât say! Had I known, I would have insisted on taking some of my tea for her journeys. Our clan leaderâs beloved deserves the finest I can give her.â
âThey donât mind, and Nita was happy to help. Something about being a âfellow entrepreneurâ was more than enough. Sheâll be sure to bring you good finds on her travels. Which reminds meâŚâ
Grandloves rummaged around a bag on his waist. He pulled out a small pouch and held it out for Lute.?
âMy eldest brother, ShuckâŚhe joined a Water clan when he was a young man, and has settled there. We keep in touch on occasion, and he sends gifts like these sometimes.â
The spiral opened the pouch, seeing several large fluted seashells that smelled briny.
âI read somewhere that Water dragons sometimes use ground shells in their brewsâŚmaybe it would be something for you to try?â
Lute let out a little gasp of delight.
âThank you, how thoughtful! Yes, I have heard of these techniques. Oh, I'll be sure to make somethingâŚthey might bring out a unique saltiness with some experimentationâŚoh, maybe a rehydrating drink of sorts! With some sugar and much much more water, yesâŚSeashells are usually used as binding agents in alchemy and construction, and crushed shells were a common addition to garden soil and livestock feed. Perhaps powdered, and simmered for a long time separate from tea firstâŚâ
The coffee master was about to prattle on further when he abruptly caught Grandloves' eyes on hisâfervent and fixed on his a beat too long. There was an air ofâŚsomething that the spiral couldnât parse.
The guardian hastily broke their eye contact and took a big sip of his coffee. His face was a touch pinkâmaking his freckles stand out all the more.
âAh, I'm glad to see you enjoy them! If youâd like more I can request them from Shuck for you again. Maybe he can visit someday and taste your creations himself.â
Lute tucked the pouch into his own house coat and broke into a toothy smile. He reached out to clasp Grandâs larger hands between his own, provoking a squeak. The guardianâs bright green eyes were wide and shining.
âMy dear Grandloves,â the spiral said, comically grave, âThis is an incredible gift. I insist you come and taste this brew when I have figured it out. I know you are not much of a tea drinker, but I will report back when I have transfigured this into a suitable coffee. Promise me youâll visit often for this!â
The red-faced librarian nodded. âO-Of course! Since you insist, I mean. Iâd be glad to.â
Lute cheered, and Grandloves could only try not to look too flustered.
snapping snapper!! did a dragon design swap with @goannafr and wanted to try my hand at a turtle design c: felt fitting haha. i imagine she can extend her neck out quite a bit
she came with the name Refurui which as far as i can tell is entirely unique to her and i have no idea what it means, but it sounds cool :D
I was little afraid of playing things too safe but a Shimmer secondary just seemed like the way to go and nature dragons are always peak hehe..I was looking at guardians and tundras mostly but then when looking through someone's sales tab this snapper caught my eye and i decided she was the one. i hope you like her!!
thank you so much omg omg she's so COOL i dont have any turtle-based dragons yet so this is such a fun and awesome idea omg :D she will fit in perfectly!!!! i love her big ol claws and her chompy beak and her chin spike and omg she is just so cool!!!!!! shimmer is my fave secondary hehe and it will be fun to draw her with like an iridescent shell oooh and leopard's like one of my top fave primaries HHEHEH you do know me too well... omg she is just the COOLEST THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! also that name's really nice, gotta love a prenamed dragon hehe >:D
i meant to only complete two projects today but through a series of wacky events i ended up finishing three geckos and this eel. anyway here they are cos i keep forgetting to post finished projects and these all kinda go hard đ¤Ş
