How it feels to be a biosphere fan in 2025
The thing about Biosphere is that the center of that movie is the moment Ray pulls down the sheet, but the other center of that movie is when Billy hands him coffee and then taps his shoulder and walks away. The closeness between them, the way they had to fight to be close even!!!! In a bubble at the end of the world!!!!! Trapped completely alone together, and they still had to paddle upstream to get close
Fun facts about the making of Biosphere (2022) that I learned from listening to interviews:
-Mark Duplass came up with the initial idea for a script where the last two guys on Earth are stuck in a biodome arguing about Super Mario Bros, and then he ran into a wall with it so he brought it to Mel Eslyn who filled in the rest, did the scientific research, and offered a queer female perspective. They also got input from Zackary Drucker who provided a trans woman’s perspective, as well as Sterling K. Brown’s perspective on the homophobia he encountered in his own community growing up as a Black man in the south (source 1 2 3)
-Mark and Mel wanted Sterling for the film after seeing a videos of him dancing goofily and being goofy in interviews. Mark said he fell in love with the idea of Sterling playing Ray before they had even reached out to him. They sent him the script asking if he wanted to be a part of it, expecting not to hear back for several months, but he read it overnight and called the next morning while driving saying he wanted in (source 1 2)
-it was filmed over a period of 3 weeks (source)
-the 30lb weights Ray uses for bicep curls before [redacted] are real and from Mark’s garage, and they had dust on them from not being used (source)
-there were a lot of LGBTQ crew on set and their appreciation for the story and how much it would mean to the LGBTQ community really bolstered Sterling during the process of making the film (source)
-Sterling found that he went on a similar journey in preparing for the role as Ray does in the film (source)
-Sterling thinks Mark’s junk looks very normal (source)
-Mark: “the key ingredient to this movie is being able to giggle warmly at these gentlemen’s discomfort as they try to deconstruct who they have been and try to grow and they mess up and see if they can survive, both literally and metaphorically. […] and I hope that anyone can see a little bit of themselves as our society is bringing us so many challenges about who we are and who we want to be and is it okay to admit that we have these blind spots at times. I hope that this is a warm and non-castigating way for people to see some things in themselves and get a different lens on it without feeling like theyre being called out.” (source)
Biosphere (2022) dir. by Mel Eslyn
I think one of my favourite things in Biosphere is that, after Ray and Billy have sex and kiss, there aren’t anymore explicit demonstrations of a romantic relationship, but it’s still clear that their relationship has evolved.
They don’t kiss on screen again, but there are other subtler displays of intimacy and affection. The dancing together, the hair cutting, Ray picking a piece of food out of Billy’s teeth, Billy getting Ray coffee and squeezing his shoulder, the tenderness of the foot rubbing (which is also on the chore list at the end of the film), the fact that their beds are pushed together by the time the storm hits, the way Ray says there’s more to lose now if the green light is bad.
It makes their relationship feel that much more intimate and real to me, like becoming romantically involved and having a baby were just the natural next steps of their relationship.
Still sorting out my feelings, have a gif.
extended version:
actually im doing really well except for the fact that everything makes me sad and the things that dont make me sad make me angry. but other than that im fine
—Good Omens fans thinking about the finale
“I could make them as dust. Just say the word.”
“No. That’s worse than war.”
— Terry Pratchett, Small Gods
oh my goshhhhh
The destruction of the entire universe and every soul in it is a truly depressing ending. Just because God replaced it with another universe that looked similar doesn't change anything - this is Job and his children all over again. Job doesn't want new children, and neither do I.
That was officially the worst ending of a show I have ever witnessed. I hate it with a burning passion and wish Good Omens had never gotten renewed after S1.
If I do make anything for GO in the future, just know that it’s in an alternate universe where the two of them sat on their arses and rewrote reality into the blank bookshop books. I ain’t touching those two human lookalikes
Hell yeah
you’re telling me s1/s2 crowley and aziraphale just never existed. like them falling in love over 6000 years is just not something that is real anymore in the canon universe. WHO thought this would be a good idea
was ugly crying and then prime started to autoplay the pilot for supernatural
Go3 spoilers
Yeah sure, Anthony and Asa got their happy ending... But my Aziraphale and Crowley did not...
What was all of it for...
are you fucking kidding me
“you’re just mad that they didn’t kiss again” yeah you know what i fucking i am. what do you mean they shared the worst first kiss in history fuelled by grief and despair and then vanished from existence without ever knowing what it’s like to kiss someone out of love and joy
