Daredevil 2.08 | The Defenders 1.01
Of course, what we know about Matt is it’s like a drug to him, and I think whenever Matt is not doing that, his life becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Because really, Matt Murdock is the lie with DD. He pretends to be blind. He pretends to use a cane. he pretends to find things with his hands. He’s living a lie as Matt Murdock. And so one of the things I love about that superhero, DD is the authentic one. - Charlie Cox
I hate this quote so much honestly
This isn’t even true, really
Matt doesn’t pretend to be blind, his eyes don’t react to light and he sees absolutely nothing. He’s as blind as you can get. You can argue that his senses “compensate” but they only account for certain things, they don’t completely make up for not having any vision. You won’t see him walking down the street easily with just headphones in.
Even as the comics have shown, he’s still going to have difficulty with visual information like visual posters or things on screens. You know, because he can’t see.
As for the pretending to use a cane this isn’t necessarily true either. His cane alerts other people that he’s blind, which may be helpful in situations like sitting down at a restaurant and not being able to see the menu. This may also help identify his disability to the people working at said restaurant. Sure, maybe he knows the cream is on the right if he finds it with his senses but again, that doesn’t mean he can read the menu
Not to mention the cane is also useful because Matt’s senses find things and function when he’s focusing on them. Having a cane to fall back on when he doesn’t want to constantly put himself through that effort is handy.
As the comics have shown,
[I was in my secret idenity– as Matt Murdock, first class attorney– when I met Chuckie. The secret identity can be a relief, Bullseye. When I’m Murdock, I don’t have to use my amplified senses to pretend I’m not blind.]
Being Matt Murdock isn’t necessarily a lie either.
In situations like being in college he has no other choice than to be completely blind and be just a blind person.
He won’t be able to see the board, or read things without accessibility options. His senses that assist him in being Daredevil are basically useless in the classroom sense because knowing where a desk is is great but that’s not going to help you study for the exam tomorrow.
[My head swivels up at the voice, partly for appearances, partly reflex from when I could still see.]
I could go on but I think I’m done here
Jesus, I think you nailed most of them but the one thing I think worth noting specifically is that the quote–misguided as it is–comes from Charlie Cox and not from the gif creator. The gif set itself is really well done, and it is a shame to take away from that. That said, I think it is REALLY important to note how prevalent ableism is in this fandom when it comes to Matt’s blindness. His senses aren’t a fix-it so much as their own entity.
Of course. If I came off as aggressive or something I honestly didn't mean to LOL and I know the quote is from Charlie not from the person who made the actual gif set
Charlie's weird in the sense that sometimes he says stuff like that or things that make it seem almost like he thinks Matt isn't truly blind and then other times he says other things that point contrary to that and almost like he completely gets it
I'm not taking anything away from him though, he's the greatest and I absolutely love him
