“maybe steve is moving back into the tower and tony is too nice to say no to him or bucky because he feels too much guilt to be deemed the one who broke up the avengers (bc ofc that would happen bc somehow it’s always tonys fault) and bucky is just awkwardly avoiding everybody at all costs because yknow that feeling when you go out with your friend to a party and they’re the only person you know?? and it’s just awkward and yikes! that’s what he’s feeling 24/7 bc he’s trying to be that kid from brooklyn steve keeps pressuring him into being but he’s struggling with that and he isn’t sleeping and he can’t look tony in the eye and this weird spider kid keeps asking him questions and tony isn’t sleeping and is constantly in the lab avoiding everybody bc he just doesn’t want to deal with it and they’re both just suffering from their own mental prisons and actual alienation in the new compound and one night/early morning bucky is getting food in the dark and scares the living hell out of tony when he bumps into him by the coffee machine and almost kills him and tony just mumbled “god damn super solider assassin livin’ in my house scaring the hell outta me…” or something and bucky just panics and is like “want cereal?” and then they have awkward dinner/breakfast/whatever and they end up talking about why they can’t sleep and they pretend everything is fine and maybe this goes on for a while, finding the other wandering the tower at ungodly hours and having small talk and maybe becoming sorta like friends until one of them snaps either tony breaking for the first time bc he’s having too many feelings of guilt for befriending the man who murdered his parents but also the guilt for resenting him when he was being tortured or bucky snapping at tony and being mad that tony hasn’t yelled at him yet bc bucky is watching tony be so self destructive and how he lets people walk over him and he’s pissed that tony is letting him and steve live in his complex for free when they single handedly made his life a living hell and then maybe they have a panic attack here and there but get over it and maybe they pine over each other bc they idolize the other and hate themselves and lots of angst before lots of fluffy smut”

So yeah, I watched Avengers Endgame last thursday and…well. Dunno what to say or feel right now. Poor Bucky….
Tony had been home after his first year of college, he was taking a couple extra classes online but it was nothing compared to the seven classes he had taken during the spring semester and would require a lot less time. He planned on lounging by the pool and partying the summer away. He had missed the heat and sun while he was at MIT, even if it was just a couple states away the winter had been brutal and he swore he still felt the cold ache in his bones.
He was sprawled out across a lounge chair, nursing some overly sweet margarita as a reward for a year well done when he saw Bucky for the first time. Tony sat up, shoving his sunglasses on his head as he stared. He had to be new…He knew his mother had mentioned hiring a couple new workers but she certainly did not mention that one of them was insanely attractive and in his early twenties! Tony hastily put his sunglasses back on, not wanting to get caught in the act. The messy brown hair pulled up into a bun, his tan skin showing that he must have been working here for a while, landscaping or whatever it is his mother hired people for, the tight shirt…
This had to be some sort of test, an attempt to prove that he wasn’t irresponsible enough to get involved with somebody’s whose paycheck had his last name on it. His parents had found him in very compromising positions with a couple of guys, Howard even bothered to learn Ty’s name while they were together, which was probably only due to his also rich family but still that was a lot for this father, sometimes he didn’t even remember Tony’s name. Long story short…They knew he was gay, even if they had never spoken it into existence. He chewed on his cheek as he pondered his next move and before he knew it he was walking after him, “Hey, new guy! I dunno what you do here but you look like someone who knows how to fix a pool filter, any chance you can help me out?” Tony definitely did not need help with a little pool filter, he was halfway to an engineering degree, he built his first robot when he was seven. “It’s been making a weird noise and I am trying to throw a rager tomorrow night and would rather not have a green pool.”

The first few weeks of the job, he was in awe of the neighborhood. Mansions, huge pools, fancy cars, never having to worry about finances. It was all so much to take in for a wide-eyed poor kid from Brooklyn. Every day he woke up he just couldn’t believe he managed to snag a job like this. How they hired some hobo looking kid with hand-me-down clothes was beyond him, but he was thankful for the Starks. They took a chance and took him in. The paychecks meant he could save up for college, which wasn’t even an option before this job.
Over the weeks and months, he soon got over the fascination of it all. Some days he felt sick seeing how these rich people just threw their money away on such trivial things. The Stark household seemed more level-headed about their spending, but they had their moments.
Bucky wasn’t sure how the job would change with Tony being back for the summer. Everything he knew about the guy was whatever his parents shared or what he heard in passing. He sounded like just another rich party kid, which at this point he wasn’t sure he could stomach. But he wanted to give Tony a chance to show who he really was, Bucky knew better than to instantly judge and accept another’s views as fact.
Wiping the sweat from his brow, he turned to face Tony’s direction. Catching himself slip for a moment, staring far more intensely than he should. The guy was as handsome as he looked in the pictures. But he couldn’t allow any of those thoughts, this was just a job and they were his employers. “I can give it a look,” Bucky called out, moving towards the shed to grab the toolbelt. Making his way over to the filter, he glanced at Tony once more, sizing the man up. “Hopefully it’s just a basic problem. I’m not a pool expert sadly.”
At first glance, he can’t see much wrong with the filter. They were aware it had acted up a couple times in the past, but simple fixes were made. He made a mental note to inform Tony’s parents about it, figuring they may need an entirely new filtration system. “I know I’m not the brightest, you see anything wrong in here?” He passed the task off to Tony, he knew a little about what the guy was going to school for. If anyone was qualified to look it was Tony.
A lot of the employees who worked at the estate either loved or hated him, no in between. Most of them had known him since he before he could walk, watched him grow up. Honestly, some of them saw him more than Howard did. They either thought he was a spoiled brat who didn't know how to listen or saw through the act and knew he was just the lonely product of his environment begging for any type of attention. But they had never really had any young employees, most older people who were just trying to support their families. Jarvis was definitely his favorite, he always went to support him at school events or checked in on him after long nights of studying. He even stood up to Howard on occasion when he was too rough on Tony.
He was definitely a New Yorker, he could tell in his walk and by the way he spoke, at least he would probably get his jokes unlike on employee who literally thought he got fired when Tony made some stupid joke. Tony shot him a smile, hoped he wasn't nervous to be around his bosses son, he had vowed to never act like his father. “C’mon...I just took two years worth of classes in one, I don't want to look at one more tech thingy that needs fixing. It’s summer time!” He fake whined as if he would ever actually be able to not experiment with any of his ideas for three months. Tony stuck his hand in the water that was gurgling away inside of the filter, “Well, no exposed wires. Didn't get electrocuted, which is pretty nice.” He felt around to see if anything was clogging it, shaking his head when he felt nothing. He moved around to pop open the circuit board, clicking a couple of things on and off, Tony eventually noticed a piece of wire that was torn. “Yeah, looks like I just have to replace a wire or two.” He shrugged.
“I’m Tony by the way, not Anthony or whatever my parents call me when I'm not around. Whadya’ do around here? Do they still give you time to act your age, let you have a night off once in a while?” He asked as he took a wire stripper from the toolbelt Bucky had, he would have to fix it later but he could at least estimate what he needed. “Howard and my mom are going out of town for a couple of days, so you can lose the uniform or whatever. You look intimidating enough, I might need you to stand around tomorrow night and look like you can beat the shit outta someone if they break something. I'm having some college friends and some old pals come over, it's my usual summer kick-off. But last year someone got too drunk and thought it would be fun to play beer pong using ma’s $20,000 china glasses and then jump on the table.” He always ended up hiring a cleaning service that usually didn't come to the house, he didn't want everybody to hate him, especially the people who did his laundry, cleaned his room and cooked his food. “You can take the next day off if you help me prevent too much collateral damage. Jarvis usually gets kind of pissy whenever I throw parties, so watch your step around him.”
