I feel like ranting about TLOU for a bit.
SPOILERS FOR 2ND SEASON AND 2ND GAME.
My problems with the 2nd game are:
1) they kill Joel in the very beginning and then retroactively try to humanize his killer. And it just doesn't work for me.
If the showrunners are so persistent on keeping the game's storyline, I hope they at least change the order if things: show Joel, Ellie and other characters (see point 2) in the present time instead of flashbacks, while constantly switching to Abby and her dad's perspective. Make Abby's dad's death the culmination, not a distant point in time that's supposed to explain everything.
2) lots of new characters who I can't sympathize with. Again, don't make it retroactive - make it linear. I can only sympathize with the relationship if you show it to me gradually, show how it came to be. Hell, that's one of the main reasons why Joel and Ellie are so important to the audience: we were with them on that journey from the beginning.
So far the showrunners seem to understand this and they've done a perfect job with all the side characters in season 1. I hope they'll stick to this approach.
3) the general message "look where revenge and love can take you"
I might be missing the point, but to me the main idea of the 1st game was perfectly expressed by Kathleen in the end of ep5: "you think the whole world revolves around him? That he's worth everything?". Yes, I do. So does Joel with Ellie and Sarah, so did Henry with Sam, Kathleen with her brother. So did Abby with her dad. They all have the same irrational reason.
The only difference is that the protagonists are Joel and Ellie. Just like Joel will pick Ellie over the whole world, the audience will pick this duo over anyone else in the story. No matter how much you humanize other characters, no matter how often you show that Joel is not a good guy. We might care deeply for all this other characters, we might be heartbroken by their death, but we still wouldn't trade their lives for the lives of Joel and Ellie.
This is perfectly shown in ep 4 and 5. The guy who got shot by Ellie didn't deserve to die. Kalthleen's brother wasn't more worthy that Henry's brother. Joel wasn't more worthy than Henry.
But I doubt you'd be able to find sympathy in your heart if Joel was killed there and then. And most importantly I doubt you'd be still watching the show
