[Poem titled “Ways We Love”. The poem is structured by justified text with large spaces in between certain words.
The poem reads as follows: In Star Trek [space] there are aliens called / Vulcans. [space] / These aliens are dictated by logic. / Everything they do [space] say [space] think / is [space] calculated / because they believe emotions must be / controlled [space] contained [space] confiscated. / Vulcans mate [space] for life / and the way they kiss is by touching the pads of / their index and middle fingers together / It is [space] gentle [space] rare [space] subtle. / A Vulcan mating ritual, however, contradicts / everything [space] they stand for. / It is [space] violent [space] fervent [space] voracious / Men in blue and yellow clawing around / in the dirt clasping hands around their throats / fingertips inches [space] from melding points— / I think of [space] humans [space] and Vulcans / when [space] we [space] are in a crowded elevator / when I [space] touch [space] my nose / and you [space] touch [space] yours / and [space] I am [space] crossing [space] the [space] distance / violent [space] fervent [space] voracious.]
