The Night Agent (Season 2) Peter & Rose
New project of Diego Klattenhoff
That's why The Blacklist opens and closes with a single mystery, who is he to her? Fans can't judge Red's actions until they know who Red is... so judge him by his first few chapters and his last. The rest is simply his journey.
Lavender
I went to see the premiere of Diego’s new movie, Lavender, at Tribeca Film Festival last night. They screened the movie (which runs about 90 minutes) and then spent another half hour or so doing a Q&A for the audience with the director, Ed Gass Donnelly and the cast in attendance (which was most of them). Afterwards, I stuck around for a few minutes and caught Diego on his way out and got to chat with him - mainly about Blacklist, of course!
In the movie, Abbie Cornish plays a photographer, Jane Ryer, who has a fascination with taking pictures of old farmhouses. She grew up in foster care and has no memory of her life before that. Diego plays her husband, Alan, and they have an adorable daughter, Alice, played by Lola Flanery. Jane is forgetful about things like pickups and appointments and early on it’s evidence her marriage is a bit rocky. The relationship between Alan and Alice is wonderful from the beginning. All the ways that Ressler is good with kids on the Blacklist? Yeah, that’s Diego. Because he’s great with her in this movie and it was fun to see him play more lighthearted scenes. He told me afterwards that one of the reasons he took the part was to show that different side that we don’t get to see in the Blacklist. I told him it was nice to see him smile on screen since we don’t get to see that very much in the show!
Anyway, Jane photographs a particular house one day that begins to trigger memories. Where the film veers into thriller is when little boxes with red ribbons start showing up with mysterious objects inside, the doorbell randomly rings, she starts seeing a little girl everywhere (not her daughter), etc, weird music plays, etc. After a car accident (brought on by some of these events) she discovers that that house has a more personal connection than she knew and when she returns with her husband and daughter, she begins to recover her memories.
The film deals with some pretty dark themes in an interesting way and had plenty of suspense and intrigue. I thought it was very well acted all around. Abbie Cornish is definitely the focus of the film and everyone else plays a supporting role. Justin Long - who plays her doctor - was definitely the most outspoken of the cast during the Q&A. Diego - even though he had a lot more screen time in the movie - chose not to speak during the Q&A and to let his castmates and the director do the talking. I have to say I wasn’t overly impressed with Ed Gass Donnelly during the Q&A - he seemed to struggle to give substantive responses to audience questions and was a bit crass at times. The screening was not even close to sold out.
Bottom line - as a Diego fan, I enjoyed the movie. Not sure I would have bothered to see it otherwise since I’m not generally into indie thrillers. But Diego fans will not be disappointed. (And here’s one more pic for you - but I cropped myself out -sorry!)
