Masterlist.
The wind has gotten strong, clouds taint the sky above grey with a promise of rain. You can taste it in the air, and so can the Kame'tire residents of this camp.
They all rushed in unison moving their drying cloths and food inside the giant empty hollow log they lived in. Some Na'vi helped the resistance members gather their electronics to your own separate camp, providing the avatar users of freshly cooked food and helping you build fires to keep warm as they worried "the good sky people of the resistance" could get sick from the cold weather of the Hollows.

The Reality
Flames suddenly roared to life down the corridor ahead, a burst of heat rushing toward them as something ignited—fuel, wiring, something volatile.
Heat slammed into them.
(Y/n) coughed, instinctively raising an arm to shield her face as the sting of the flames licked at her skin.
So'lek stepped in front of her, body angled to block the worst of the heat, one arm wrapping around her shoulders and pulling her close against his chest.
The flames flushed brighter, crackling violently as they consumed everything in their path.
He could feel the burn against his own skin.
Ignored it.
His focus stayed on her. "We cannot stay here."
His voice was low but urgent.
His eyes scanned rapidly for another path—another exit—anything that would get them away from the spreading fire.
The corridor behind them was already filling with smoke.
They needed to move.
Now.
His grip tightened slightly around her. "Can you move?"
"It is shallow."
(Y/n) kept pressure against her side as they moved.
"There is just a lot of bleeding."
She winced as another jolt of pain travelled through her abdomen.
She nodded yes, and he helped guide her to the far side where the flames had not yet reached.
The answer should have reassured him.
It did not. Not with blood still running between her fingers.
So'lek's gaze swept over her quickly.
Checking her footing. Her breathing. the colour in her face.
Then his eyes landed on an overturned supply crate nearby.
His gear.
The warrior spotted it immediately. His bow. His knife. His quiver.
Before she could argue he crossed the distance in a few strides, dropping to one knee beside the crate and gathering his equipment.
The familiar weight settled across his back.
His knife returned to its sheath.
The bow found his hand once more.
Only then did he return to her. "Stay close to me."
(Y/n) nodded.
The alarms continued screaming overhead.
Smoke drifted through the corridors.
Somewhere behind them came the distant roar of engines and shouted orders.
The entire facility was looking for them.
His gaze snapped upward.
A vent.
High along the wall, just beyond the reach of the flames.
It was their only chance.
So'lek drew an arrow as he stepped back just enough to get a clear shot.
He aimed.
Released.
The arrow struck true, shattering the metal grate with a sharp crack that echoed through the corridor.
Pieces clattered to the floor.
Smoke poured upward through the opening.
"Up," he urged, already moving beneath it.
He crouched and clasped his hands together, bracing himself.
(Y/n) didn't argue.
She stepped into his grip, biting back a hiss as pain flared through her side.
He lifted her easily, guiding her upward.
Her fingers caught the edge.
She pulled herself toward the opening—
And coughed. The sound was rough, strained from the smoke filling her lungs.
It twisted something deep in his chest.
"Keep moving," he urged.
She dragged herself into the vent, disappearing into the darkness above.
Only once she was inside did So'lek jump, catching the edge. He hauled himself up after her, pulling his body into the narrow space just as the flames surged closer below.
The healer crawled ahead while So'lek followed behind, keeping one eye on her wound whenever he could.
Several times she slowed. She whimpered, pressing her hand harder to her side as the pain spiked sharply.
His stomach tightened.
The vent eventually ended above another section of the facility.
Below them stretched the hangar floor—wide, open, and crawling with activity. Rows of aircraft loomed under harsh artificial lights, their metal bodies gleaming through drifting smoke. Beyond the hangar doors, the main yard was visible, floodlights cutting across the terrain as soldiers moved in tight formations, weapons raised, scanning for any sign of intrusion.
"They are on alert," (Y/n) whispered, shifting slightly to give him a clearer view.
So'lek's eyes narrowed as he took in the scene—the patrol routes, the blind spots, the rhythm of movement. Every detail mattered.
His gaze flicked back to her, already weighing their next move.
He leaned in, pressing a brief kiss to her cheek, his hand steady against her face.
"Stay here. I will not be long."
Her eyes widened slightly, fingers tightening weakly against his arm. "Where are you going?"
His gaze hardened, already shifting toward the hangar below. "It will be safer to get you out if they are all dead."
"So'lek, there are too many—"
He cut her off gently, cupping her cheek more firmly, his thumb brushing against her skin."I have a legend for a reason."
The warrior quietly removed the cover and dropped down.
She leaned against the cold metal of the vent wall, forcing herself to stay still despite the pain pulsing through her side. Her breath came shallow, uneven, as she listened.
Screams echoed from below sharp, panicked.
Gunfire cracked in rapid bursts.
Explosions followed, shaking the structure beneath her, sending vibrations through the metal that pressed against her back.
Each sound twisted something deep in her chest.
So'lek was down there.
Her fingers curled weakly against the metal, nails scraping faintly as another explosion thundered through the hangar.
Eventually, it went quiet after the last crash.
The gunfire ceased.
The shouting faded.
Only the distant crackle of fire and the groan of damaged metal remained.
So'lek appeared beneath the opening once more, his form emerging through the smoke and dim light below.
His eyes found her instantly.
Relief flickered across his features,. He reached up without hesitation.
"Come."
(Y/n) didn’t waste a second. She shifted toward the opening, wincing as pain flared through her side, and carefully lowered herself down.
His hands were already there. He guided her the rest of the way before pulling her fully into his arms.
One arm slid beneath her knees. The other supported her back. Lifting her effortlessly against his chest.
The moment she was secure, something inside her finally loosened. Relief flooded through her so suddenly it made her dizzy. She sagged slightly against him, her head falling against his shoulder.
She had been terrified she was going to lose him.
The thought still clung to her.
Her fingers curled weakly into his chestpiece as she rested her head more firmly against his shoulder, drawing in the familiar warmth of him.
She was in his arms again.
A small, fragile smile touched her lips.
Her gaze drifted past him, taking in the destruction left behind.
The hangar was in ruins. Smoke curled through the air. Flames licked at shattered machinery.
Bodies lay scattered across the floor.
So'lek had not exaggerated.
There was no one left to stop them.
His forehead rested gently against hers. "There is no army that could stop me from getting you to safety."
(Y/n)’s lips curved faintly despite everything. She leaned forward just enough to press a soft kiss to his lips. Grateful. Exhausted.
Turning immediately, he carried her out of the base without looking back.
(Y/n) closed her eyes briefly. The scent of Pandora. It felt like a blessing.
She let out a weak breath, her voice barely above a whisper against his shoulder. "I can see why they call you the dog tag warrior… you really took out every single one of them."
So'lek huffed softly, not quite a laugh, his grip on her tightening just slightly as he adjusted her weight in his arms. He dipped his head, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to the top of her head. "You were in danger, (Y/n)."
"Doesn't mean you had to slaughter every single one of them," she murmured weakly.
"Yes, I did," he replied without hesitation, his voice steady and certain. "If any of them had harmed you, I would have never forgiven myself. So I killed them all. I would destroy any threat to your life."
Her fingers tightened faintly against him, her gaze soft despite the exhaustion weighing her down. "I love you, you know that."
He smiled down at her, something warm and unguarded in his expression. "I do."
He shifted her slightly in his arms, already moving with quickly. "Now, let's get you to the lab."
By the time they reached the Archipelago Field Lab, So'lek's nerves felt as though they had been scraped raw.
The entire flight back had been torture.
Every time (Y/n) shifted. Every small sound she made.
He knew she had said it was shallow. He knew she had remained conscious. He knew she was talking normally.
None of that seemed to matter.
Not when he was still suffering the stress from only a few hours ago when he had been trapped inside a metal box convinced he might never see her again.
Iley landed.
So'lek was off the saddle before the ikran had properly settled.
His hands immediately finding her waist as he helped her down.
Ri'nela looked up from the table she had been sorting medicines on.
Then her eyes landed on the blood. "What happened?"
The young Sarentu was already crossing the distance. "I thought you were only going to tell him the good news."
"I did." (Y/n) winced as she carefully lowered herself onto one of the examination tables.
"Then he got captured by the RDA."
Ri'nela looked shocked. "That feels like a very important detail."
"It was an exciting afternoon." The healer's voice remained suspiciously cheerful.
So'lek looked like he wanted to strangle somebody.
Ri'nela immediately began gathering supplies.
The healer pointed toward a tray. "New lesson."
Ri'nela paused. "What?"
"How to do stitches."
So'lek froze. His pacing stopped mid-step, his entire body going rigid as his ears flattened sharply against his head.
Stitches.
His gaze snapped to (Y/n)'s side, then to the tray Ri'nela was gathering, then back to his mate as if hoping he had somehow misheard.
He had not.
His expression shifted rapidly—shock, disbelief, and then something dangerously close to horror.
His tail lashed once behind him.
"...No."
(Y/n) did not even look at him.
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."So'lek dragged a hand down his face, looking like he was reconsidering every life choice that had led him to this exact moment. "You are not letting her practice on you."
"I am not letting her 'practice.' I am teaching."
"That is worse."
Ri'nela froze halfway through picking up the needle, looking between them like she had just been dropped into a battlefield. "I can— I can wait—"
"No," (Y/n) said calmly.
"Yes," So'lek said at the exact same time.
They both paused. Turned to look at each other.
(Y/n) raised a brow.
So'lek looked like he wanted to die. "Yawne," he said again, voice low and strained, stepping closer . "I cannot stand to see you in pain.
"I know it doesn’t matter whether Ri'nela or you stitch it—this wound is too large for natural healing."
"What if I do it wrong?" Ri'nela asked.
"You won't."
"What if I hurt you?"
"You will."
Ri'nela looked scandalised.
(Y/n) laughed. "It is stitches, Ri'nela."
"It is not supposed to be entirely comfortable."
Meanwhile So'lek had begun pacing.
Again.
He had done plenty of pacing while trapped in a shipping container.
Apparently he had not gotten it out of his system.
The warrior moved from one side of the room to the other.
Arms crossed.
Jaw tight.
Eyes never leaving (Y/n).
His headache was rapidly becoming legendary.
The two women ignored him.
Mostly.
(Y/n) cleaned the wound carefully.
Blood and dirt were washed away until the cut was fully visible.
Ri'nela leaned closer. Studying it.
"It looks smaller now."
"Everything looks smaller once you stop bleeding all over yourself."
"Good to know."
The healer handed over a vial.
"First step."
"Numbing medicine."
Ri'nela took it carefully. "This is similar to the pain medication?"
"Similar idea." (Y/n) nodded.
"This one blocks the nerves around the wound."
"You inject around the edges."
"Not directly into the wound."
Ri'nela followed every instruction carefully. Her hands steadier now than they had been during the blood draw.
"Good." (Y/n) smiled.
A few minutes later she lightly poked the area. "Can you feel that?"
"Not really."
"Excellent." The healer pointed toward the sterile thread. "Now we stitch."
Ri'nela swallowed.
The needle suddenly looked much larger than before. "You make it look easy."
"It is not easy." (Y/n) picked up another needle to demonstrate. "It is practice."
She showed her how to hold the instrument.
"Think of it like weaving."
Ri'nela visibly relaxed. That comparison made sense to her.
"Through one side." (Y/n) demonstrated the movement. "Then through the other."
The younger woman copied carefully.
Her tongue poked slightly from the corner of her mouth in concentration.
"Good."
"Now tie."
Ri'nela followed the instructions. The first knot looked slightly crooked.
The second looked much better. The third looked almost professional.
"There."
Ri'nela sat back. "I did that."
"You did."
The healer smiled.
"And your patient survived."
Across the room So'lek looked deeply unconvinced. His ears flicked toward them.
His eyes narrowed.
His mate was bleeding.
Allowing Ri'nela to learn stitches.
Talking about it as though they were discussing tea recipes.
Meanwhile he was one headache away from collapsing.
(Y/n) noticed. "Yawne."
The warrior looked over immediately.
She smiled softly. "I am okay."
Ri'nela wrapped a bandage around her side, securing the stitches in place. She smoothed the fabric gently, checking that it was snug but not too tight.
"There," she murmured, stepping back slightly. "That should hold."
(Y/n) glanced down at the finished work, then back up at her with a small, approving smile.
His eyes moved to the stitches.
She held out a hand to So'lek "Come here."
So'lek crossed the room. Taking her hand immediately.
The tension in his shoulders remained. The headache remained. The urge to lock her inside a safe cave where no RDA could ever reach her remained.
(Y/n) squeezed his hand. "See? Ri'nela did an excellent job."
The young Sarentu looked very proud of herself.
Then looked toward So'lek.
Then slightly less proud.
Because the warrior still looked as though he was considering hunting down every human involved personally.
"I am alright." (Y/n) repeated. This time softer.
His hand drifted lower. Resting briefly against her stomach.
His voice dropped, rough with worry. "The baby… will it be alright?"
(Y/n)’s expression softened immediately. She covered his hand with her own, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"It will be fine," she assured him quietly. "The wound is shallow. It did not go deep enough to harm the baby."
His shoulders eased, just slightly.
"All I need is a few days of rest," she continued, her tone calm and steady, "and to make sure the wound does not become infected."
She tilted her head, offering him a small, reassuring smile. "We are both alright."
So'lek's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer, searching her face as if committing every detail to memory, before he finally exhaled slowly.
Then his ears flicked toward Ri'nela.
"Ri'nela," he said.
The young Sarentu straightened immediately. "Yes?"
"I need to speak with my mate."
So'lek waited until Ri'nela left.
For a few moments neither spoke.
(Y/n) sat on the examination table while So’lek remained standing in front of her.
He cupped her cheek. His thumb brushed softly across her skin.
(Y/n) immediately leaned into the touch.
So’lek swallowed. The words felt strangely difficult to find.
He hesitated, breath catching slightly as he searched for the right way to say it. “My head still aches from it,” he admitted quietly, almost embarrassed. “From how afraid I was.”
“I have never been as afraid as I was today.” His voice was quiet. Rough around the edges.
(Y/n)’s smile faded. She reached up and covered his hand with her own.
The warrior lowered his forehead briefly. Closing his eyes.
He sat on the edge of the examination table beside her and gathered her into his arms
Careful of her stitches.
“I almost lost you.” His arms tightened. Not enough to hurt. Enough to make his point. Enough to tell her exactly how terrified he had been.
His hand slid down. Resting against her stomach.
One stray bullet, one bad timing, and he would have lost everything.
The thought struck him with a force that made his chest tighten.
Not just her. Not just the life they had begun to build. But the future he had only just allowed himself to imagine.
Gone in an instant..
The warrior’s eyes closed. He could still see her emerging from behind those crates with her hand pressed against her side.
And feel that horrible cold terror that had seized him in that moment.
The certainty that if anything happened to her, some part of him would never recover.
His hand remained against her stomach. His thumb moving slowly.
The warrior lowered his head. Pressing a kiss into her hair.
“When I was trapped.” His voice grew quieter. “I was not thinking about myself.”
“I was thinking about whether you got away.”
His jaw tightened. “I was thinking about whether they had hurt you.”
His arms tightened slightly around her. “I was thinking about our child.”
The words still felt unreal. Wonderful. Terrifying. Perfect. All at once.
(Y/n)’s eyes stung. She pressed closer.
So she simply held him.
And let him hold her.
“You did not lose us.” Her voice was soft. Certain.
The warrior drew in a slow breath. Then released it.
His forehead settled against hers. Golden eyes meeting hers.
“I know.”
“But I came closer than I ever wish to again.”
Then he leaned forward and kissed her. Just long enough to reassure himself that she was real.
"I have lost everything once already, (Y/n)."
His voice was quiet. Lower than before. "I cannot do it again."
He had convinced himself that surviving was enough. That teaching the Sarentu was enough. That avenging his people was enough.
Then she had appeared.
A dreamwalker. A healer.
A strange womans.
A woman who somehow managed to walk straight through every wall he had built around himself.
And now— A wife. The mother of his child.
His family.
(Y/n) reached up and rested her hand over his where it lay against her stomach.
Golden eyes met hers.
"And you're my everything, So'lek."
The words stole what little breath he had left.
"I do not know what happiness was until you came along and gave it to me."
The warrior stared at her. "You already had happiness."
(Y/n) shook her head immediately. "No."
"I had moments."
"But not happiness."
"I had my animals."
"I had tea."
That finally earned the faintest smile from him.
"But then I had you."
Her eyes glistened. "And suddenly I had someone waiting for me when I came home."
The warrior's ears lowered slightly.
"You worried if I had eaten." A small smile tugged at her lips.
"You tried to protect me from all that upset me."
His expression remained stubbornly neutral.
"You sat through hours of me talking about medicines you had never even heard of."
"I still do."
"I know."
The smile grew.
"You make me tea."
"You make better tea."
"I know."
Now both of them were smiling.
"You make me feel protected."
"When I am with you, everything feels... easier." it.
"You gave me a home."
His gaze dropped briefly. To her hand. His hand. Their child. Then back to her.
Without thinking he pulled her closer.
The warrior buried his face against her shoulder. Drawing in a slow breath. Then another.
Finally, he lifted his head enough to press a kiss against her forehead.
Then another.
Then one against her temple. "You are wrong." His voice was rough.
(Y/n) blinked. "What?"
A faint smile appeared.
"You gave me happiness too." And for a man who rarely spoke about his feelings, it was perhaps the most important thing he had ever said.
(Y/n) shifted slightly in his arms.
A sharp sting pulled across the fresh stitches in her side.
She winced.
Unfortunately for her, So'lek noticed everything.
The warrior went rigid. His arms loosened. His hands moved to her shoulders. His eyes searched her face.
"What is wrong?"
(Y/n) sighed, "nothing."
"You are hurt."
"No, I am—"
His hand was already hovering near the stitches.
Afraid to touch. "Did they tear?"
"No."
"Are you bleeding?"
"No."
"Does it hurt?"
"Well yes, I was caught by shrapnel."
The answer did absolutely nothing to reassure him. The worry only deepened. "(Y/n)."
She could tell he was about to panic.
His posture had gone rigid, his gaze flicking between her and Ri'nela as if calculating how quickly he could summon help.
Possibly every healer on Pandora.
"It was the stitches."
He paused. "The stitches."
"Yes."
"The stitches caused that expression."
She nodded.
"You are certain?"
(Y/n) reached over and cupped his face. "I promise."
His shoulders remained tense. "You winced."
"Because someone stitched me back together today."
He still looked unconvinced.
The healer could almost hear the argument taking place inside his head.
Part of him believed her. The rest was busy imagining every possible disaster. Involving her. The baby. The stitches. The RDA. Probably all at once.
A tired smile touched her lips. "You are worrying yourself into another headache."
"I am not."
"You absolutely are."
The warrior looked away. Which was answer enough.
(Y/n) laughed softly. Then immediately regretted it when her side protested again. Another wince.
So'lek's eyes widened.
"Oh for Eywa's sake."
Before he could launch into another round of panic she grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him.
The interruption worked.
Mostly because it derailed every thought in his head.
When she pulled back, his expression had become considerably less alarmed.
"You are impossible."
"No."
His hand settled carefully against her side.
Avoiding the wound. Avoiding the stitches. Just wanting to touch her. "I am concerned."
His thumb brushed lightly along her arm. "I spent hours believing I had lost you."
His gaze dropped briefly toward her stomach. Then returned to her. "I think I have earned the right to worry."
(Y/n)'s eyes stung.
So she leaned forward and rested her forehead against his. "Fine."
The warrior looked pleased with himself.
"But only a reasonable amount."
One eyebrow lifted.
"What is a reasonable amount?"
She smiled.
"Less than trying to summon every healer on Pandora because I pulled a stitch."
The corner of his mouth twitched.
A rare sign of surrender.
"No promises."
And despite everything that had happened that day, despite the stitches, the RDA, the trap and the shipping container, the answer made her laugh anyway.
"So..." His thumb brushed slowly across her side. "We are truly going to have a child?"
The question sounded almost cautious.
(Y/n)'s smile softened. "Yes."
"Yes, we are."
The warrior drew in a slow breath. His gaze drifted back to her stomach.
Still completely flat. Still unchanged. And yet everything had changed.
"How do you know?"
(Y/n) shifted slightly, making herself more comfortable against him. "I was teaching Ri'nela how to do blood tests."
So'lek looked confused. "What is a blood test?"
"It is where we take a small sample of blood and analyze it."
"Blood carries information."
His ears flicked. Listening carefully.
"There are certain hormones that only appear when someone is pregnant."
The word still made his chest tighten.
Pregnant.
His mate was pregnant.
Their child.
(Y/n) continued. "The hormone is called nCG."
"I noticed the level was elevated."
So'lek nodded slowly. Not entirely understanding. But trying.
Then she smiled. "So I checked with the ultrasound."
"The machine that lets you see inside the body?"
"Exactly."
The warrior remembered seeing her use it on injured creatures before.
"And?"
(Y/n)'s hand settled over his. Helping keep it against her stomach. "There was a gestational sac."
The unfamiliar words immediately earned a confused look. "A what?"
"A gestational sac."
She laughed softly at his expression. "It is the first structure that forms during pregnancy."
His eyes narrowed. Still trying to follow.
"It is basically a small protective sac." She thought for a moment. Trying to explain it in a way that made sense. "It is where the baby begins developing."
Understanding slowly dawned. His hand instinctively spread slightly against her stomach. As though trying to feel something impossible to feel. "The child is already there?"
"Very small." She held her fingers close together. "Very, very small."
His eyes followed the gesture.
"The size of a seed."
The warrior stared. A seed.
His child. The size of a seed.
"The gestational sac tells us approximately how far along the pregnancy is."She smiled. "And judging by its size..."
The healer's eyes sparkled. "I am about five weeks along."
Five weeks.
The number settled over him.
Five weeks.
Their child had already existed for five weeks.
Growing quietly while he went about his patrols. While they drank tea together. While he held her in his arms every night.
The realization left him speechless.
He was going to be a father. The thought no longer felt distant. No longer felt like a dream.
It was real.
The warrior lowered his head.
Pressing a long kiss against her forehead. Then another. Then one against her temple.
When he finally pulled back his eyes looked suspiciously bright. "I did not think Eywa would answer my prayers so quickly."
(Y/n)'s smile grew. "What prayers?"
The faintest hint of embarrassment crossed his face. Rare enough that it nearly made her laugh. The warrior looked away.
Briefly.
"I may have asked."
"Asked?"
His ears flicked. "I asked often."
That finally made her laugh.
"So'lek."
"I am serious."
The warrior looked back at her. "I asked for a family."
His hand tightened slightly over hers. "For you."
Then his gaze dropped to her stomach again.
A smile finally won its battle. Impossible to hide.
"And now it seems Eywa listened."
(Y/n) chuckled softly and leaned forward to kiss him.
The warrior immediately melted into it.
One hand still resting over her stomach.
The other cupping her cheek.
When she pulled back, her smile had become brighter. Warmer. "You will not be the last of the Trrong."
So'lek went completely still. His throat tightened. As though he still could not quite comprehend it.
For fifteen years he had carried the weight of being one of the last.
Every grave. Every memory. Every face. He had remembered them all because he feared nobody else would. Feared there would come a day when no one remained to speak their names. When their stories would die with him.
His hand pressed a little more firmly against her stomach. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to feel the reality of her beneath his palm.
Their child. The first Trrong born in fifteen years.
Eywa.
The thought nearly brought him to his knees.
The warrior closed his eyes.
For a long moment he could not speak. Because suddenly he was seeing things he had never allowed himself to imagine.
A child racing through the grass. Small blue hands reaching for him. Laughter echoing through their home.
Stories being told around a fire.
A future. A real future.
Not survival. Not revenge. Not grief.
Life.
His chest ached with it. A deep ache that somehow felt wonderful.
When he finally opened his eyes again there was a vulnerability there that only she ever saw.
"You do not know what that means to me." His voice had grown rough. Quiet.
(Y/n)'s hand found his cheek. "I think I do."
So'lek shook his head. Slowly. "No." A faint smile touched his lips. "You know what it means to the warrior."
His thumb brushed across hers.
"But not what it means to the lonely man who thought he would die as the last of his people."
"I spent years believing the Trrong would end with me."
His jaw tightened briefly.
"But now..."
A breath escaped him. Half laugh. Half disbelief. "Now our child will know their clan."
His eyes softened. "They will know where they came from."
Another small smile appeared. "They will know their ancestors."
His gaze returned to her. "And they will know their mother."
That smile grew. "I think that is the greatest blessing of all."
(Y/n) felt her eyes sting.
The warrior leaned forward and kissed her again. Longer this time. Savoring it.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead remained resting against hers.
His hand never left her stomach.
As though he could already feel the future waiting there.
And for the first time in many years, So'lek found himself looking forward to tomorrow.
The smile faded from (Y/n)'s face.
Because today, when he had been captured, she had been terrified she would have to bring their child into the world alone—that she would lose him, her person, her everything, the love of her life.
His thumb brushed gently across her cheek. "What troubles you?"
When she finally spoke, her voice was quieter. "As overjoyed as I am..."
Her hand found his. Holding it tightly. "I am worried."
So'lek's expression softened at once.
He shifted closer.
"What if something happens to you?" The words came out in a rush. As though she had been holding them back. "What if the RDA gets lucky one day?"
Her fingers tightened around his. "What if you go on patrol and don't come back?"
The warrior's heart sank. He knew where this fear came from.
(Y/n)'s eyes glistened. "Please." Her voice cracked. "You cannot leave me on my own."
"I can't do this without you."
So'lek stared at her .The fear she was trying so hard to hide. The fear beneath all the happiness.
Slowly he reached up. Both hands cradling her face. Forcing her to look at him.
"Ma yawne." His voice was steady. Gentle. "I have no intention of leaving you."
A tear slipped free despite her efforts.
The warrior brushed it away with his thumb.
"I know." She laughed weakly. "No one ever intends to leave... but they still do."
The words hit him like a blow. He could hear the pain still lingering behind them.
The old wounds. The old fears.
The fear of being left behind. Alone. Again.
So'lek leaned forward until their foreheads touched.
"You listen to me." His voice had grown firmer now. "I am going to be here."
"I am going to watch this child grow."
Another kiss against her forehead.
"I am going to teach them to hunt."
A kiss against her temple.
"I am going to tell them stories of the Trrong."
Another.
"I am going to adore them."
That earned the faintest laugh.
The warrior looked pleased with himself. "I am going to spoil them."
"You absolutely are."
"I know."
A small smile appeared.
"And as they grow, I am going to tell them about their mother."
His eyes held hers. "I will tell them how brave she was."
"How kind she was."
"How she never stopped helping others even when she should have been resting."
(Y/n) sniffed. The tears were still there. But so was a smile.
"So'lek..."
The warrior gently pressed his forehead against hers once more.
"I cannot promise that nothing bad will ever happen."
The honesty hurt. But he would not lie to her. Not about this.
"I cannot promise that life will always be easy."
His hand squeezed hers. "But I can promise that I will fight for every sunrise."
The words settled heavily between them. "I fought to survive before because there was work left to do."
"Now I have something worth coming home to."
A wife. A child. A family.
"I will not leave willingly." His thumb brushed away another tear."And if I have any say in the matter, you are going to grow very tired of me."
A watery laugh escaped her.
The sound eased something inside him.
Good.
He would much rather hear that.
So'lek pulled her gently into his arms.
Holding her carefully.
One hand resting against the back of her head.
The warrior simply held her.
His thumb moved slowly while he considered his next words.
This conversation felt different now. More serious. Because there were no longer just two lives involved.
There were three."(Y/n)."
The warrior waited until she met his eyes."If something like today ever happens again..."
His jaw tightened briefly. The memory of the trap was still fresh.
"You must run."
(Y/n)'s expression immediately fell. "So'lek—"
"For your sake."
"And for our child's."
The words silenced her.
The warrior's gaze did not waver."You must flee from danger."
"But what about you?"
As though she could not imagine making any other choice.
"Do not worry about me." His hand rose to cup her cheek. "You know me."
A faint smile touched his lips. "I would fight like a demon to get back to you."
The image was not difficult to imagine. Because she had already seen it.
The way he had nearly torn an entire base apart trying to make sure she would get out safely.
"I do not need you risking your life for mine." His thumb brushed across her cheek. "I need you safe."
(Y/n)'s eyes stung. "So'lek..."
He shook his head. "If I am trapped, run."
"If I am injured, run."
"If I tell you to leave, leave."
Every word sounded painful for him to say. Because he knew exactly what he was asking. He was asking her to walk away from him.
Something neither of them wanted.
"But—"
"No."
The interruption was gentle. Absolute.
"If something happens to me..."
His voice caught briefly. "Then I will spend every remaining breath trying to return to you."
Because now there was a wife waiting for him. A child waiting for him.
A future waiting for him. And he intended to claw his way through hell itself if that was what it took to get back to them.
"But if something happens to you..."
His eyes closed for a moment. The words clearly hurt. "If something happens to you, then I lose everything."
(Y/n) felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
The warrior leaned forward and pressed a kiss against her forehead. Long. Lingering. Tender.
"I can survive pain."
A kiss against her temple. "I can survive injury."
Another against her cheek. "I can survive hardship."
His hand tightened around hers. "But I cannot survive losing my family."
He meant every word.
So'lek rested his forehead against hers once more. Golden eyes meeting hers. Softening.
"You are my first priority now."
"You."
"Our child."
Then finally, a faint smile appeared. "And after both of you are safe, then I can begin worrying about myself."
"Please." His voice softened. "Please trust that I will do everything in my power to come home to you."
His hand slipped from her cheek to cover hers. Holding it against his chest. Against the steady beat of his heart."I promise you that."
"I will be careful."
A small smile touched his lips."I know that sounds strange coming from me."
That earned the faintest laugh from her. "You think?"
The corner of his mouth twitched."But things are different now."
"Before, if I died, I died."
The simplicity of the statement made her heart ache."There was no one waiting for me."
"But now there is you."
His hand squeezed hers gently."There is our child."
A long breath left him."And there are mornings I have not seen yet."
His eyes softened. "I want to see you become a mother."
"I want to hold our child."
Then So'lek reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"You have given me something I thought I had lost forever."
His voice dropped lower."A future."
The warrior looked at her for a long moment. Taking in every detail. The woman he loved. The woman carrying his child. The woman who had broken into an RDA base because she refused to leave him behind.
A fierce tenderness crossed his face.
"I intend to spend the rest of my life with you."
His forehead rested against hers once more. "So trust me."
A kiss against her brow. "I will fight."
Another against her temple. "I will survive."
A final kiss against her lips. "And I will come home."
"Okay, So'lek."
(Y/n) reached up and cupped his cheek. The corners of her mouth lifted into a small smile. "I'll hold you to that."
The warrior looked entirely untroubled by the threat. In fact, he seemed almost pleased. "As you should."
She narrowed her eyes slightly. "I am serious."
"So am I."
(Y/n) studied him for a moment.
The man who had spent the last hour looking at her as though she might disappear if he blinked.
The man who already had one hand resting protectively over their child whenever he got the chance.
A soft laugh escaped her. "You are impossible."
A faint smile appeared. "You have mentioned that before."
"Many times."
(Y/n) leaned forward and kissed him.
When she pulled back she was smiling again.
That seemed to satisfy him.
His arm immediately slipped around her waist and pulled her closer.
The warrior lowered his head and pressed a kiss into her hair.
Then another.
Then simply rested his cheek against the top of her head.
"Now what was that you were saying about bed rest?" he asked, voice low but unmistakably pointed.
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes at him and huffed softly. "That I do not need that much."
He gave her a look. One that said he was not convinced in the slightest.
She held his gaze for a moment longer before her shoulders dropped in a quiet sigh. "It may be best if I take a few days off," she admitted, reluctant but honest. "Eat and drink a lot… and minimal exertion."
So'lek's expression softened immediately.
"I am glad," he said simply.
He hesitated for only a moment before speaking again, voice gentler now.
"May I move you?"
(Y/n) blinked up at him, then gave a small nod. "Yes. I am not that badly injured."
That was all the permission he needed.
So'lek slid one arm beneath her knees and the other around her back, lifting her with careful ease as . He adjusted his hold instinctively, making sure she was secure, his grip firm but mindful of her injuries.
(Y/n) let out a soft breath, settling against him without protest.
He glanced down at her briefly, checking her expression.
"Let me take you home."
So'lek carried her inside the cavern, one arm beneath her knees and the other supporting her back, careful not to jostle the fresh stitches along her side.
The hammock swayed gently as he lowered her into it.
She settled back with a tired breath.
He had only taken a step away when gentle fingers closed around his wrist.
"So'lek."
He turned back immediately.
Her eyes had settled on his hands. The skin across his knuckles was raw. Split. Dried blood had mixed with dirt and grime, the wounds torn open again each time he had struck the walls of his cage.
She carefully turned one of his hands over in both of hers.
"So'lek..." Her thumb brushed lightly across the torn skin. "Your knuckles."
Her eyes lifted to his.
"They're bleeding."
She looked back down at them again, her expression tightening.
"Did you do this..." Her voice caught."...trying to get to me?"
His free hand rose and gently cupped her cheek.
He didn't answer. He didn't need to.
She already knew.
Her throat tightened.
"Get me the jar on the shelf." She pointed toward the back of the cavern.
"The cloth and water jug."
"And the bandages."
She looked at him in a way that made arguing seem pointless.
"I am fine, yawne."
"Not up for discussion." The firmness in her voice made the corner of his mouth lift.
A quiet chuckle escaped him. "As you command."
He returned a moment later carrying everything she'd asked for.
Without a word he knelt in front of the hammock and held both hands out to her.
(Y/n) dipped the cloth into the cool water before gently wiping away the dirt.
The dried blood softened beneath careful strokes.
She cleaned each scrape as though afraid of causing him even the slightest discomfort.
His hands looked enormous inside hers. Scarred. Calloused.
Yet she held them with extraordinary care.
When they were finally clean, she lifted one of them.
Turned it over. Then pressed a gentle kiss into his palm.
So'lek's breath caught.
(Y/n) opened the small jar and scooped out a little of the salve. Her fingertips worked it carefully into every split knuckle. Every torn patch of skin.
He barely noticed the sting.
When she finished the first hand, she wrapped fresh bandages around it before moving to the second.
Again she spread the salve. Again she wound clean bandages neatly around his hand.
Then she lifted it once more.
Another kiss.
This time across his knuckles.
He leaned forward and brushed his forehead gently against hers.
"Thank you."
She smiled softly.
"I take care of wounded animals." Her thumb brushed lightly over one of the bandages. "I suppose I should take care of my wounded mate too."
A quiet laugh escaped him.
Satisfied, So'lek gathered the salve and bandages and returned them to their place on the shelf.
So'lek watched her for another moment before carefully climbing into the hammock beside her.
Mindful of the stitches, he eased one arm around her waist and gathered her gently against his chest.
She melted into him immediately.
He let out a long, content breath before lowering his head to press a lingering kiss into her hair.
The headache that had plagued him since the moment his stress had begun had finally begun to ease.
She was finally safe.
For the first time since that trap had snapped shut around him... He believed she truly was.
She shifted slightly in his arms, settling more comfortably against him. His hand drifted down to rest over her belly, his thumb tracing slow, absent circles across it. He pressed another soft kiss to her hair, lingering there for a moment.
This generous, kind woman… she had given him everything. Her love. A place to belong. She'd made his lonely camp a home. And now… she was giving him a family.
His chest tightened with something deeper than gratitude.
He wondered, quietly, what he had ever done to deserve her.
A while later, So’lek stirred beneath the gentle tap against his cheek.
His eyes opened at once.
He looked down to find his mate watching him.
“Yes, yawne?” he asked, his voice still thick with sleep.
She smiled sheepishly.
“Could you get me something to eat, please?”
Her hand rested unconsciously over her stomach.
“I am quite hungry.”
He sat up immediately, careful not to jostle the stitches along her side as the hammock shifted beneath them.
His hand rose to cup her cheek. “What do you feel like eating?” he asked.
She thought for only a moment. “A roast.”
A small smile tugged at her lips.
“And some slices of fruit on the side.”
“So specific.”
She looked almost apologetic. “I know.”
“It sounds good.”
“It does. So can you please make it for me?"
He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
“I shall return shortly.”
She watched him head over to the cooking station and get a fire going, already setting some meat to cook, her stomach growling at the thought of food.
It was not long before he returned carrying a wooden platter piled with roasted meat alongside freshly sliced fruit.
The smell alone made her mouth water.
He climbed carefully back into the hammock and handed it to her before settling beside her once more.
She immediately leaned against him.
Without thinking, one of his arms wrapped comfortably around her waist while she began eating.
She was hungry. Far hungrier than he had ever seen her.
The roast disappeared surprisingly quickly.
Followed by the fruit.
She barely slowed between bites.
So’lek watched quietly, his expression calm, though inside his heart gave another flutter.
She was eating for two now.
If she asked him to cook an entire Sturmbeast, he would not hesitate.
He found himself mentally planning tomorrow’s hunt. More fruit. More vegetables.
Anything she might want.
She would have every meal she desired. Every comfort he could provide.
When she’d finally finished, she handed him the empty platter with a content little smile.
“Thank you.”
“It was my pleasure.”
He set the platter aside before reaching behind him for a small comb and fresh cord.
“Come here.”
She immediately understood.
Turning around, she shuffled until she was sitting between his legs with her back resting lightly against his chest.
Her kuru fell over one shoulder as he gently gathered it into his hands.
His fingers moved with practiced care, separating each strand before combing through them slowly.
Whenever he found a small tangle, he worked patiently until it came free instead of pulling.
(Y/n) closed her eyes.
It felt wonderful.
His fingers were gentle. Unhurried. Every touch seemed intended simply to make her comfortable.
Once he was satisfied, he began rebraiding her kuru, securing it neatly before smoothing a few loose strands back into place.
“There.”
She reached back to feel it.
“You always do it better than I do.”
“And yet your hands are steadier than mine.”
“They are.”
“Or do you just like me doing your hair?”
“I might.”
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
She leaned back against him again, letting her full weight rest comfortably against his chest.
He shifted lower into the hammock, stretching his legs out beneath them before gathering her back into his arms.
One arm wrapped securely around her waist. The other drifted down until his broad hand rested lightly against her stomach.
His thumb traced slow, absent circles across it..
The cavern settled into comfortable silence.
(Y/n) let out a long, content sigh and relaxed completely against him.
The sound made the corners of So’lek’s mouth lift.
His mate and his future child were both within reach, held safely in his arms.
Not long after, her breathing had slowed into the deep, steady rhythm of sleep or someone just beginning to drift off
He smiled to himself. His mate had never been particularly good at staying awake once she became comfortable. Especially when she was wrapped securely in his arms.
She stirred after a while, shifting slightly as if trying to find a better position. A faint hiss slipped from her lips as she rolled, the movement clearly pulling at the wounds. She winced, then carefully turned onto her side, tucking herself closer against him.
“Mmm…” she mumbled, voice thick with sleep. “Will you make me a hammock… so I can nap outside… in the shade?”
Her fingers curled lightly against him as she settled again.
“Yes,” he says.
"I want some cushions too," she mumbles.
"You can have whatever you want."
Another soft yawn followed, her words trailing off as sleep pulled her back under.
His arm rested comfortably around her shoulders.
Still half asleep, she reached up and gently took hold of his forearm.
Without opening her eyes, she guided it lower until her head rested against the firm curve of his bicep instead.
A long, content breath escaped her.
Apparently satisfied with that, one sleepy hand began patting around .
She finally found his other arm.
She tugged it across herself until she was securely wrapped in both of them.
Only then did she seem content.
Another yawn escaped her.
So'lek couldn't help the quiet chuckle that rumbled in his chest.
His mate truly did treat him like her own personal blanket.
She nestled deeper against him.
Her head turned slightly.
Then she pressed a sleepy kiss against his bicep.
"My big..."
"...strong..."
Another yawn interrupted her.
"...man."
The words were little more than a mumble.
Yet they struck him with far more force than she could possibly have intended.
He lowered his head and kissed the top of hers.
Lingering there.
"Rest now, yawne."
She gave the tiniest nod against him. Already drifting again.
So'lek settled a little lower in the hammock until he could comfortably rest his face in the crook of her neck.
From there he could hear every slow breath she took.
He stayed awake for several more minutes, making certain she was completely comfortable before allowing himself to relax.
Only when he was certain she was sleeping soundly did he finally close his own eyes.
The day had tested him in ways he never wished to experience again.
But it was over now.
His mate was safe.
Their child was safe.
And both of them were asleep in his arms.
That was all he needed.
With that quiet thought, sleep finally claimed him as well, leaving the weight of the day behind until morning.

Part 9 > Part 10 > Part 11
Conflict
Alex sat hunched over several monitors with exhausted focus etched across his face.
He replayed diagnostic logs again. And again.
Nothing. No hardware fault. No neural spike warning. No overload indicators.
Everything pointed toward manual interruption.
Which made absolutely no sense.
Alex frowned harder before finally pulling up archived security footage from the the link rooms.
“If something interrupted the connection…” He muttered quietly to himself. “…then something had to happen physically.”
The footage flickered to life. Timestamped. Normal.
Then Alex froze. “…What?”
The footage showed Alma entering the link room. Alone.
Alex leaned closer immediately.
The timestamp matched the exact window before (Y/n)’s collapse.
His stomach dropped. “No no no…”
Onscreen Alma walked directly toward the active link station. Toward (Y/n)’s pod.
Then without hesitation—She slammed her hand against the emergency red cutoff button.
The one that forcibly severed an active neural link.
Alex went completely still. Horror slowly flooding through him. Because he knew exactly what that button did.
Instant forced disconnect. Emergency use only. Potentially catastrophic during active deep-link states.
“Oh my god…” He immediately grabbed the comms.
“Priya.” His voice sounded strained. “You and Nalin need to get down here.”
Static crackled briefly. “What’s wrong?” Priya asked.
“You just need to see this.”
Something in his tone immediately made her move. Minutes later Priya and Nalin entered the room quickly.
Nalin still looked exhausted from days in the med bay. “What is it?”
Alex wordlessly replayed the footage.
The room fell silent.
Alma appeared onscreen again. Walked to the pod. Pressed the emergency cutoff. Then calmly walked out moments before alarms later erupted throughout the base.
Priya’s face drained completely of colour. “No…”
Nalin stared at the screen unmoving. Her jaw tightened slowly.
Alex nodded his head. “I checked the diagnostics three times.”
“The emergency severance came directly from the manual cutoff.”
Nalin looked physically ill now. Because suddenly every horrible suspicion she tried not to entertain became real. “She severed the link.”
The words came quiet. Disbelieving.
Priya immediately shook her head harder. “No.”
“There has to be another explanation.”
“She would never intentionally hurt (Y/n).”
Nalin’s eyes stayed fixed on the frozen frame of Alma beside the pod. “She still did it.”
Teylan and Ri’nela stood frozen. Neither had meant to overhear. They had only been passing by. But now both stared at the monitor in horror.
Teylan’s stomach twisted violently. “…Alma did that?”
Ri’nela looked furious. And hurt.
Teylan looked shaken to his core.
“She almost killed her…” Nobody in the room answered him. Because there was nothing comforting left to say.
Teylan stared at the frozen security footage like if he looked long enough it would somehow change.
Alma stood beside the link pod.
Her hand against the emergency cutoff.
Then the footage ended.
“No…” The word escaped him quietly. Uncertain. Shaken. “There has to be something else.”
Ri’nela looked toward him sharply. “What else could there be?”
Teylan immediately shook his head harder. “She wouldn’t do that.” But even saying it now sounded fragile. Weak.
Because he had seen it. All of them had. Alma pressing the button. The same moment (Y/n)’s link severed.
Teylan’s chest tightened painfully. Because Alma had protected them for years. Fed them. Taught them. Watched over them after they escaped Mercer.
“She was worried,” Teylan said quickly.
Almost desperately now.
“She thought (Y/n) was overworking herself.” “Maybe she panicked.”
“Maybe she thought stopping the link would help.”
Ri’nela stared at him in disbelief. “By slamming the emergency severance?”
Teylan flinched slightly. “I don’t know!”
The words came louder than intended. His breathing quickened. Because he truly did not know what to believe.
Part of him felt sick imagining Alma intentionally harming someone.
Another part could still hear Nalin saying, Another link breakage like that and she may not wake up next time.
Ri’nela meanwhile looked furious. And hurt. Confusion twisted visibly across her face too because this did not fit together properly in her mind either.
Teylan looked toward her. “They argued because Alma tried stopping me from leaving base with (Y/n).” The memories suddenly felt uglier now.
Ri’nela folded her arms tightly. Anger flashed through her eyes now. “She had no right.”
Teylan rubbed shakily at his face.
“She didn’t mean it…” The sentence sounded more like something he needed to convince himself of.
Priya remained completely silent nearby. Because deep down— That was the question terrifying all of them now.
Did Alma understand what that button could do? Or had she acted impulsively out of anger and control without considering the consequences?
Nalin finally spoke quietly. “She may not have intended this outcome.” Her eyes stayed hard on the frozen screen. “But intent does not change what happened.”
That silence afterward felt unbearable.
Because whether Alma meant it or not—(Y/n) could have died.
Teylan hurried after Ri’nela through the corridors of the resistance base struggling to keep up with the fury in her pace.
“Ri’nela wait—”
She did not.
Not until she was at the medbay. Inside the room the lighting remained dim and quiet.
(Y/n) sat propped carefully upright against pillows a blanket wrapped around her shoulders while she slowly drank from a cup of water.
She still looked exhausted. Pale. Dark shadows beneath her eyes. Hair slightly tangled from days unconscious.
Her movements sluggish like even lifting the cup required effort.
And yet— The second she saw Ri’nela she softened immediately. “Ri’nela?”
Before she could say anything else— Ri’nela crossed the room quickly and threw her arms tightly around her.
The sudden movement nearly knocked the water from (Y/n)’s hands. “Woah—”
(Y/n) carefully set the cup aside immediately wrapping one weak arm around Ri’nela in return. “Are you okay?”
Ri’nela said nothing. She only held onto her tighter.
And suddenly memories crashed painfully through her mind.
(Y/n) teaching gently without judgment. (Y/n) tending wounds and animals and people with endless patience. (Y/n) always somehow chasing fear and doubt away like warmth pushing back cold.
And all Ri’nela could think now was— She almost died.
Not just an ally. Not just a healer. A friend. A dear friend.
Ri’nela’s throat tightened painfully.
(Y/n) frowned softly sensing something wrong. “Ri’nela?”
Slowly Ri’nela pulled back enough to look at her. Her eyes looked wet now. Conflicted. Angry. Hurt.
And when she finally spoke her voice came quiet and strained. “Alma severed your link.”
The room went completely still.
(Y/n)’s expression emptied briefly. Like her mind failed to process the sentence at first. “…What?”
Behind Ri’nela, Teylan stood near the doorway looking miserable and shaken.
Ri’nela swallowed hard. “Alex checked the security footage.”
“She went into the link room.”
“And she pressed the emergency cutoff.”
(Y/n) stared at her silently.
The color slowly drained further from her already pale face. “No…”
The word escaped faintly. Disbelieving. Because Alma had argued with her. Threatened her. Been harsh.
But this? This was different.
“She nearly killed you,” Ri’nela whispered.
(Y/n)’s breathing suddenly felt strange. Too shallow. Her thoughts tangled violently trying to reconcile the image of Alma with what Ri’nela was saying.
Teylan finally spoke softly from the doorway. “She may not have known what it would do.”
Ri’nela immediately looked toward him sharply. “She still did it.”
“I know!”
Teylan sounded upset now too. “I just…” His voice weakened. “I don’t understand why.”
(Y/n) lowered her gaze toward her trembling hands.
And suddenly— The memory of Alma’s voice echoed back sharply in her head.
This is an order. Take one more step and I will confine you to base.
The realization settled sickeningly through her chest.
Because maybe— Maybe Alma truly had wanted control more than she cared about the risk.
Priya and Nalin lingered quietly near the doorway behind Ri’nela and Teylan. Watching.
Because now that the truth was out— Something had to happen.
Didn’t it?
Nalin finally stepped slightly forward. “What do you want to do, (Y/n)?”
The question settled heavily over the room.
(Y/n) stared down at the blanket gathered weakly in her lap.
Her thoughts spun painfully. Alma had severed the link. Alma had nearly killed her.
And yet—
The moment she imagined pushing this further— Her chest tightened.
Because she already knew what would happen. Tension. Conflict.
And Alma— Alma would never forgive being challenged openly like this.
Especially by her.
(Y/n) suddenly felt trapped all over again. Like no matter what choice she made there would be consequences waiting behind it.
If she fought this— Recovery would become unbearable. Every interaction poisoned. Every day tense.
And deep down a tired frightened part of her whispered the same thing it always had,
Do not make trouble. Keep your head down.
Slowly she lifted her eyes again. “Leave it be.” The words came quietly.
Ri’nela stared at her immediately. “You are not going to do anything?”
(Y/n) shook her head faintly. “No.” Her voice stayed calm despite how exhausted she looked.
“I am alive. That is all that matters.”
Nalin’s brow furrowed sharply. “(Y/n)—”
“Thank you for worrying about me.” Her tone softened gently now. “But I do not wish to cause unwanted trouble.”
Ri’nela looked outright upset. “This is not trouble, she nearly—”
“Ri’nela.” (Y/n)’s voice stayed soft. But firm enough to stop her. “It is fine.”
It very clearly was not fine.
Everyone in the room knew that.
Teylan looked miserable. Priya conflicted. Nalin frustrated beyond belief.
But (Y/n) simply looked…Tired. Bone deep exhausted. Like she no longer had the strength left to fight another battle.
Slowly she leaned back more heavily into the pillows. Her eyes already beginning to droop again from exhaustion. “Now…” Her voice had gone quieter. “If you will all excuse me…”
She closed her eyes slowly. “…I would like to go back to sleep.”
So’lek returned to the resistance base shortly after nightfall. He moved quietly through the halls instinctively heading toward the med bay the unfinished necklace tucked carefully into his pouch.
Ri’nela caught him halfway there. “So’lek.”
He immediately stopped.
One look at her face and his posture sharpened instantly. “What happened?”
Ri’nela hesitated briefly.
Because honestly— She still did not fully understand any of this herself.
Not Alma.
Not why (Y/n) reacted the way she did. Not why someone so kind folded inward the second the harm was directed at herself.
And she also didn’t know how he’d react.
“It was Alma.”
The words landed hard.
So’lek went completely still.
Ri’nela continued carefully. “Alex checked the security footage.”
“She entered the link room.”
“And manually severed the connection.”
The air around So’lek seemed to change instantly. Not outwardly explosive. Worse. Stillness. The terrifying kind.
Ri’nela saw his jaw tighten sharply. Saw his shoulders go rigid. His eyes darkened with a look of violence immediately.
“She could have killed her.” The words escaped him low and dangerous.
Ri’nela nodded once.“We know.”
For a moment she genuinely thought he might turn around and hunt Alma down immediately. But then she quickly added— “(Y/n) wants it dropped.”
That finally made him look directly at her.
Confusion flickered briefly beneath the anger.
“She what?”
Ri’nela sighed frustrated now too. “She does not want trouble.”
“She said she is alive and that is all that matters.”
So’lek stared at her like the words made no sense. Because to him— Someone hurting (Y/n) was not something quietly ignored. It was something answered.
Ri’nela rubbed tiredly at her face. “I do not understand her.”
“She stands up to everyone for other people.”
“For Teylan.”
“For animals.”
“But when someone hurts her…”
Ri’nela shook her head slowly. “…she just accepts it.”
So’lek’s expression shifted slightly at that. Not softer. Sadder.
Because he understood more than Ri’nela realized.
He had seen pieces of it already. The way (Y/n) downplayed her own suffering automatically. The way she endured things quietly until her body physically collapsed beneath it all.
The thought made something ache violently inside his chest again.
Ri’nela crossed her arms. “She is still a mystery to me.”
So’lek’s gaze turned briefly toward the med bay ahead. Toward where she rested inside. “I will speak with her.”
(Y/n) was asleep again by the time So’lek entered the med bay.
So’lek paused beside the bed for a long moment watching her. Even sleeping she looked exhausted. Dark shadows lingered beneath her eyes. Her face still pale against the pillow.
But at least now her breathing remained even.
Carefully he brushed several loose strands of hair back from her face.
(Y/n) stirred faintly beneath the touch but did not wake. Good. She needed sleep.
So’lek settled beside the bed quietly afterward.
After several minutes he finally pulled his weapons free one by one. Knife. Gun. Ammunition.
Metal pieces rested methodically across the nearby table while he began dismantling them with practiced silent precision.
Usually weapon maintenance calmed him. Tonight it simply gave his hands something to do while he waited for her to wake again.
Every so often his eyes lifted instinctively toward her. Checking. Watching. Making sure her chest still rose steadily.
The fear had not fully left him yet. So he cleaned each weapon carefully. Slowly dragging cloth across blades. Checking mechanisms. Reassembling parts with quiet clicks in the otherwise silent room.
At one point (Y/n) shifted faintly in her sleep brows furrowing slightly.
So’lek’s attention snapped toward her immediately.
His hand moved to hers without thought.
The moment his fingers wrapped around her hand again her expression softened.
Something in his chest ached fiercely at that.
(Y/n) stirred awake again slowly.
For a moment she simply blinked blearily at the ceiling trying to orient herself.
Then thirst hit immediately. She pushed herself upright carefully wincing faintly at the lingering ache in her body before reaching weakly for the water nearby.
Beside her So’lek sat cleaning one of his blades beneath the low lighting. Even occupied his attention shifted toward her instantly the moment she moved.
“How is the sanctuary?” she asked quietly after drinking. Her voice still sounded rough around the edges.
So’lek reassembled part of the weapon slowly before answering. “They miss you.”
“Ulrr rarely leaves your hammock.”
“And the pups wait beneath it.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened softly hearing that.
“You should visit them,” So’lek continued quietly. “It would calm them.”
(Y/n) stared down into the water cup for a moment. Then slowly shook her head. “I do not think they would recognize me.”
Her tired gaze lifted toward him. “And even if they did…” A faint sadness crossed her expression. “…I do not want them associating humans with safety.”
So’lek immediately frowned at that. Without another word he set the weapon aside and crouched beside her bed. The warrior looked down at her silently for a long moment. “Why do you not wish for justice for yourself?”
(Y/n) sighed deeply already knowing someone must have told him. “Ri’nela?”
So’lek did not answer. He did not need to.
(Y/n) rubbed tiredly at her face. “All it will do is make Alma resent me more.”
The exhaustion in her voice sounded older than her years somehow. “I am already stuck on bedrest for several days. I would rather not spend them dealing with endless headaches.”
So’lek’s expression hardened slightly. “But you were willing to stand against her for Teylan.”
(Y/n) looked away briefly. “Because there are lines. Teylan being more fearful than the others is not an excuse to keep him trapped.”
Her fingers tightened faintly around the cup. “He deserved someone standing up for him.”
Then So’lek asked softly, “And are you not worth such defense as well?”
The question struck something deep inside her. Painfully deep.
Because instantly— Something inside her almost answered, Why would I be?
The thought flashed across her face before she could hide it.
Just for a second.
But So’lek saw it. He saw it clearly. The way she looked genuinely uncertain that she deserved protection too.
His chest tightened sharply.
His hand rose carefully cupping her cheek gently. “You matter.”
(Y/n)’s eyes lowered instinctively. “So’lek—”
“No.” His thumb brushed softly beneath her eye. “She could have taken your life.”
A flicker of anger entered his voice then. Not toward her. Toward the fact she still somehow believed peace mattered more than her own life.
“And your first instinct is to protect the person who harmed you from consequences.”
(Y/n) swallowed quietly. “I just don’t want conflict.”
“You fear becoming difficult.” The accuracy of it made her chest ache. Because yes. Yes, she did. She knew causing trouble was never worth it.
So’lek looked at her like the thought itself angered him.
“You should not have to suffer silently.”
The words hit her harder than anything else had. Because no one had ever said something like that to her before.
“It’ s fine,” (Y/n) whispered softly. Her gaze stayed lowered avoiding his eyes now. “I didn’t die.”
The words sounded far too casual for something that had nearly killed her. “So there is nothing to worry about… right?”
“So’lek.”
The warrior’s jaw tightened immediately. Because no. There was everything to worry about.
Someone had harmed her. And she sat here trying to smooth it away like it was an inconvenience instead of terror.
(Y/n) finally looked up at him then. Tired. Gentle. Pleading more than arguing.
“I insist.” The words came quiet but firm. “Let it go.”
Something deep inside him rejected the idea instantly.
No. Every instinct inside him screamed no.
He had spent years hunting down people who caused suffering.
And now she expected him to simply accept this quietly because conflict made her uncomfortable?
His chest tightened sharply.
Because he knew why she asked. Not weakness.
Fear. Fear of becoming difficult. Fear of retaliation.
And somehow— That hurt almost more than Alma’s actions themselves.
So’lek’s thumb brushed slowly against her cheek again while he stared at her silently for a long moment.
Conflict moved heavily behind his eyes. Because everything in him wanted justice for her even if she would not seek it herself.
Wanted to protect her. Wanted someone to answer for the fear and pain she endured.
But more than anything— He did not want to become another source of stress pressing against her exhausted heart.
Very quietly he said“If that is what you wish.” The words sounded reluctant. Not agreement. Just restraint.
For her.
(Y/n) visibly relaxed faintly hearing it.
And somehow that only made the ache inside him worse. Because she looked relieved someone was finally willing to stop pushing. Like she expected conflict the moment she asked for peace.
So instead So’lek leaned forward gently pressing his forehead against hers.
And while he outwardly let the matter drop—
Deep inside himself—The warrior knew he would never fully forget what had happened to her.
Nor stepped into the resistance base expecting noise.
Instead—Something sweet drifted through the halls.
Fruity. Warm. Almost floral.
His nose wrinkled slightly in confusion before he followed the scent toward the kitchen.
The moment he stepped inside—He paused.
Teylan and Ri’nela hovered around the central bench while (Y/n) stood near one of the stoves slowly stirring something inside a large pot.
The room smelled strangely pleasant.
Fruit simmering. Sweet nectar. Herbs.
Ri’nela was busy cutting pieces of bright shell fruit while Teylan leaned forward watching the pot intently. “What are you doing?”
Teylan answered immediately. “(Y/n) is showing us how to make the nectar cubes she gives the Kinglor.”
Nor blinked once. This was what the strange sweet smell was?
His eyes shifted toward (Y/n). “I thought you were resting.”
(Y/n) did not even look up from the pot. “This is resting.”
Nor looked unconvinced.
(Y/n) finally glanced toward him faint amusement flickering across her tired face. “I am standing still and stirring.”
“That is significantly less than my usual activities.”
Ri’nela snorted softly.
Nor stepped closer cautiously eyeing the strange setup spread across the counter.
Several small glass vials. Bowls of crushed fruit. Containers filled with golden nectar. Dried herbs.
(Y/n) noticed his attention. “Stressed and injured creatures often struggle to eat properly.”
Her voice remained quieter than usual still recovering.
“It takes energy to digest regular foods.”
She stirred the pot again slowly. “So if I concentrate the nutrients instead…”
She gestured toward the simmering mixture. “…it becomes easier for them to feed while still getting everything they need.”
Teylan looked fascinated. “So the nectar is not just for taste?”
(Y/n) shook her head. “No.”
She pointed toward one of the bowls. “Shell fruit for sugars and hydration.”
“Crushed dapophet for minerals.”
“Nectar for energy.”
“Then I reduce it down slowly.”
Nor watched her move between the ingredients surprisingly precise despite how tired she still looked.
Nor folded his arms. “You feed all this to wild animals?”
(Y/n) gave him a look. “They are not patients if they die.”
That shut him up surprisingly quickly.
Teylan meanwhile watched her pour the thick golden mixture carefully into another bowl.
Then (Y/n) picked up the translucent gel beside the counter.
“This is from a vein pod.”
She squeezed the substance slightly between her fingers. “It solidifies when cooled.”
“So once the nutrient mixture combines with the gel…”
She slowly stirred it together until the thick liquid became smoother. “…and it cools…”
(Y/n) finally looked toward them. “…you get an easy to eat nutrient cube.”
Ri’nela looked impressed. “That is actually really clever.”
Nor stayed quiet watching her carefully now.
Because this— This did not feel like the behavior of someone pretending to care about Pandora. Everything about her movements felt practiced. Patient.
Thought through carefully over years.
And despite himself— The skeptical part of him that distrusted sky people found itself struggling to reconcile that with the woman quietly stirring healing mixtures in front of him.
“If you look in the fridge, Nor, you can try one.”
Nor immediately looked suspicious.
Ri’nela grinned. “Oh come on.”
Teylan nodded eagerly.
“They actually taste really good.”
Nor muttered something beneath his breath about dreamwalkers poisoning people before finally moving toward the fridge anyway.
He opened it cautiously. Inside sat several trays of neatly cut translucent cubes.
Golden-orange in color with faint flecks of crushed fruit suspended inside them.
They smelled sweet. Fresh.
Nothing like medicine.
Nor grabbed one reluctantly.
Then narrowed his eyes at the three of them watching him expectantly. “If I die—”
“You will become excellent fertilizer,” (Y/n) replied dryly while stirring another batch.
Ri’nela snorted loudly.
Nor grumbled again before finally biting into the cube.
The texture surprised him immediately. Soft. Cool. Then the taste hit. Sweet nectar. Citrus from shell fruit. Something floral beneath it.
Rich without being overwhelming.
His ears flicked slightly in surprise before he could stop them.
Teylan immediately noticed. “You like it.”
“I did not say that.”
Ri’nela burst out laughing.
(Y/n) looked far too amused from across the kitchen. “They also make a very good snack.”
Nor swallowed reluctantly glaring at the cube in betrayal. “…Tastes like sky people medicine.”
(Y/n) raised an eyebrow immediately. “I hope you know everything in those medicines comes from Pandora.”
She gestured toward the ingredients spread across the bench.
“The nectar.”
“The fruits.”
“The vine pod gel.”
“All Pandora.”
Nor folded his arms stubbornly.
“You still make them like a sky person.”
(Y/n) shrugged lightly. “I simply use methodology from Earth.”
She stirred the pot slowly again. “Observation.”
“Testing.”
“Combining what works.”
“Your Tsahìks do the exact same thing.”
That made Nor pause slightly. Because… She was not wrong.
(Y/n) glanced toward him again. “Earth did not invent medicine.”
“It just taught me a different framework for understanding it.”
Ri’nela smiled faintly hearing that.
Teylan meanwhile looked fascinated again.
“So all those weird little bottles you carry around are basically concentrated plants?”
“Mostly.”
(Y/n) nodded.
“Some stabilize compounds.”
“Others increase absorption.”
Nor eyed the cube in his hand again before reluctantly taking another bite.
(Y/n) immediately noticed. A smug little smile tugged at her tired face. “You hate it so much you are eating another one.”
Nor scowled. “I am making sure it is not poison.”
“Of course you are,” Ri’nela said with a grin.
And despite himself—Nor finished the entire cube.
Nor stared suspiciously at the empty space where the cube had been before clearing his throat awkwardly. “So…”
He shifted slightly beside the stove. “Can I help?”
Ri’nela immediately looked delighted by this development.
Teylan looked outright shocked.
(Y/n) blinked once before a faint tired smile crossed her face. “You want to help?”
Nor immediately looked defensive again. “I did not say I wanted to.”
“You literally just did,” Ri’nela pointed out.
“I am making sure you do not ruin the mixture.”
(Y/n)’s smile widened slightly. “Of course.”
She stepped carefully away from the stove clearly still exhausted from simply standing this long. “How about you stir this pot.”
Nor moved over immediately trying to look like this was a serious mission and not him voluntarily helping with animal medicine.
(Y/n) pointed toward the thick golden mixture. “Slowly.”
“If it sticks to the bottom it burns.”
Nor nodded once already stirring carefully.
Meanwhile (Y/n) finally lowered herself into one of the nearby chairs with visible relief. Every movement still looked heavy with lingering exhaustion.
Teylan immediately reached for another nectar cube while everyone else was distracted.
(Y/n) pointed at him instantly without even looking. “Teylan.”
His hand froze halfway to the fridge. “They taste really good,” he defended immediately.
“That is because they are not meant to taste like medicine.”
Ri’nela laughed while cutting more fruit. “You made medicine snacks.”
“I made efficient nutrient delivery systems,” (Y/n) corrected tiredly. “That happen to taste good.”
Nor stirred the pot quietly for several moments before finally glancing over at her sitting down.
His eyes lingered briefly on how pale she still looked. How tired.
Then back toward the careful instructions she gave anyway despite clearly struggling to stay upright long earlier.
Something about it unsettled him slightly. Because she kept helping people.
“You should rest more,” Nor muttered gruffly.
(Y/n) blinked slightly at him surprised. “I am resting.”
Nor looked unconvinced. “You are supervising.”
“That counts.”
Teylan snorted softly trying another stolen cube anyway while Ri’nela smacked his hand away from taking a third.
Nor glanced toward the worn notebook sitting beside the stove. Its pages were warped slightly from humidity. Several loose papers stuck out between sections. Ink stains marked the edges.
“What is this?”
(Y/n) looked over from her chair. “My notes.”
Nor picked it up carefully while still stirring with the other hand.
The moment he opened it his face immediately twisted.
The writing looked chaotic. Tiny cramped notes squeezed into margins.
Half-finished diagrams. Crossed out observations.
Na’vi words mixed with English shorthand.
“What in Eywa’s name…”
Ri’nela leaned over trying to look. “…Can you even read this?”
(Y/n) looked entirely unbothered. “I just use it to jot down thoughts.”
“To-do lists.”
“Observations.”
“Discoveries.”
Nor flipped another page.
The handwriting somehow became worse.
“That sounds like a mess.”
“It is.” (Y/n) took another sip of water calmly. “I do however have separate journals where I keep track of every confirmed discovery I have made. It’s a bit tidier.”
That immediately caught Ri’nela’s interest. “Really?”
(Y/n) nodded faintly. “My earlier notebooks especially.”
“They contain detailed medicinal properties and knowledge shared by Tsahìks from the eastern clans.”
Ri’nela’s eyes widened slightly. “I would love to read that.”
Nor looked surprised too though he hid it better.
(Y/n) shrugged lightly. “My handwriting is still chicken scratch. But you are welcome to try.”
Teylan leaned closer excitedly.
“You wrote down all the healing things you learned?”
“Yes.”
(Y/n)’s expression softened slightly now.
“I didn’t want knowledge disappearing if something happened.”
“So whenever a Tsahìk allowed me to learn something…”
Her fingers brushed absentmindedly along the edge of her water cup. “…I wrote it down.”
Ri’nela looked genuinely moved hearing that. Because suddenly those messy notebooks became something else entirely. Years worth of trust slowly earned from clans who once distrusted dreamwalkers entirely.
Nor glanced back toward the chaotic pages in his hands.
And despite himself— He found his earlier assumptions shifting again. Because this was not someone casually pretending interest in Pandora.
This was someone who spent years carefully learning it. Respecting it enough to preserve its knowledge properly.
Even the messiness of the notebook somehow made it feel more genuine. Like she wrote faster than her thoughts could keep up.
Nor shut the notebook carefully this time instead of dismissively. “You really write everything down?”
(Y/n) gave him a tired amused look.
“If I don’ t I forget.”
“That seems unlikely.” “Oh trust me,” she muttered dryly. “My brain is held together by duct tape and glue.”
A massive Sturmbeast pawed violently at the ground. Its distress echoed through the plains in deep thunderous bellows that made the surrounding grass tremble.
A ring of Na’vi stood several meters while the creature thrashed its head wildly.
A tracking dart protruded from its shoulder. Angry red flesh swollen around the impact point.
“No closer!” one of the hunters warned. “It will run!”
Tamtey stood near the front staring at the distressed creature helplessly.
The Sturmbeast’s sides heaved rapidly. Fear.Pain. Confusion.
It kept trying to scrape the dart free against nearby stones only making the wound worse.
Tamtey immediately lifted his hand to his com.
“Ri’nela?”
Static crackled briefly.
“Here.”
“Is (Y/n) awake?”
“Yes.”
Relief crossed his face instantly. “I will switch to her channel.”
A moment later— “Hey, (Y/n).”
Her voice answered softer than usual but awake. “What’s up Tamtey?”
“Sorry to bother you…” He glanced back toward the distressed Sturmbeast. “…but we have a Sturmbeast here with a dart in its side.”
“It looks painful.”
“Can you help?”
Silence crackled briefly. “Unfortunately, Tamtey, I am benched for a little while longer.”
Tamtey looked back toward the struggling creature. “Please, (Y/n).”
“It needs your help.”
Then her voice returned calmer. “Tamtey. I am going to coach you so you can help it.”
He blinked. “…What?”
“You heard me.”
“Tell me what I need to do.”
Tamtey straightened slightly immediately listening.
“First— steady your heart.” Her tone softened quieter now. “Breathe deeply.”
“Slowly.”
“If you are distressed it will sense your distress.”
Tamtey obeyed. Inhale. Exhale. Again.
Slowly his heartbeat steadied.
The Sturmbeast still pawed nervously at the ground but no longer seemed quite as frantic.
“Good,” (Y/n) said through the com.
“Now approach slowly.”
“Keep your movements calm.”
“Hands open.”
“Voice steady.”
Tamtey swallowed once before beginning to move. Every nearby hunter watched tensely. The Sturmbeast snorted loudly ears flicking toward him.
“It is okay,” Tamtey said carefully. His voice remained calm despite the creature towering over him. “You are alright.”
Another slow step.
Then another.
The creature’s breathing gradually eased slightly.
Tamtey reached the dart finally.
“Now what?” he whispered.
“Quickly,” (Y/n) instructed. “One clean pull.”
“And step back immediately afterward.”
Tamtey gripped the dart tightly. Then yanked hard.
The Sturmbeast roared violently jerking backward.
Several Na’vi flinched instinctively.
Tamtey stumbled away quickly exactly as instructed.
The creature shook itself violently once—
Then bolted off into the forest disappearing into the distance.
Then Tamtey looked down at the dart still in his hand completely stunned. “I did it.”
A grin spread slowly across his face. “I did it!”
Laughter broke out around him immediately.
“You are a lifesaver, (Y/n)!”
Her tired laugh crackled softly through the com. “Tamtey, that was all you.”
He looked ridiculously proud of himself now but remembered he needed to find nectar. “Hey, do you know the best spot to find swamp hive nectar?”
(y/n) chuckled, “You just said where, Tamtey.”
“…In a swamp.”
Tamtey groaned. “You know what I mean.”
“Do you know where that is?”
“Yes.”
Her amusement remained obvious now. “But I think it is best if you work it out on your own.”
Tamtey sighed dramatically. “You are cruel.”
“I am teaching you a very valuable lesson.”
He smiled. “Thanks, (Y/n).”
“No problem, Tamtey. Stop by later. I have more nectar cubes ready.”
“Will do.”
His voice softened slightly afterward. “…I am glad you are doing better.”
This time her answer came quieter. Warmer. “…Me too.”
Tamtey arrived at the swamp expecting thick vines and buzzing hives.
Instead—The air smelled wrong. Sharp. Chemical. The water beneath his feet shimmered with an oily rainbow sheen while plants near the shoreline sagged blackened and dying.
Silence hung unnaturally through the swamp. No insects. No distant calls.
Nothing.
A family of scarab crawlers lay motionless near the bank legs curled inward unnaturally.
Tamtey’s stomach dropped. “…Eywa.”
Something massive crashed nearby.
He spun just in time to watch a Sturmbeast stumble from deeper within the swamp. Its movements looked wrong. Unsteady. Disoriented.
The giant creature let out a strained pained cry before its legs suddenly buckled beneath it.
The ground shook when it collapsed.
Tamtey immediately grabbed his com. “(Y/n).”
Static crackled softly before her tired voice answered. “What is it?”
“I am at a swamp…” His voice faltered slightly looking around at the devastation. “…but it is polluted.”
“Animals are dying its worse than that small facility near base.”
Her silence lasted just a fraction too long. “How bad is it?”
Before he could answer— Movement rustled nearby. A hexepede burst shakily from the brush sides heaving rapidly. The animal made a strained choking sound. Then collapsed hard into the mud.
Tamtey stared horrified. “…Bad.”
The word came hollow. And suddenly he understood why she spent so much time trying to save Pandora’s creatures.
Because seeing this hurt. Deeply.
Tamtey swallowed hard.
He knew instantly—
If (Y/n) were standing here— This would break her heart.
“Can you help?” His voice sounded almost desperate now. “Please tell me you can help.”
Silence crackled softly through the com. Then quietly she answered, “The best thing you can do right now, Tamtey…”
Her voice had gentled painfully. “…is switch to Priya’s channel.”
“She can help locate the base causing the pollution.”
“So no other animals are hurt.”
Tamtey looked back toward the fallen Sturmbeast. “But they are dying, (Y/n).”
Her inhale caught faintly through the speaker. “I know, Tamtey.”
The sadness in her voice sounded exhausted. “I know.”
“But from what you are describing…”
“…it is already too late for many of them.”
Tamtey clenched his jaw tightly.
“Once the pollution is inhaled…”
“Digested…”
“In the bloodstream…”
Her voice lowered quieter. “…there is very little I can do.”
“All I can really do is prolong their death.”
Tamtey looked sick hearing it. “You have to have something.”
“I could but Tamtey, there’s less than a 1% chance it works.”
The admission sounded frustrated. Angry at herself. “I am still searching for something that works.”
He looked toward another creature trembling weakly near the poisoned water. “…Is there any way I can ease their suffering?”
A long silence followed.
Then softly, “Yes, Tamtey.”
His stomach twisted immediately. “What can I do?”
Her answer came barely above a whisper. “Give them a swift death.”
Tamtey closed his eyes briefly. Because he understood exactly what she meant.
Even through the com he could hear how much saying those words hurt her.
“Even if you brought them to me immediately…” (Y/n)’s voice shook faintly with restrained emotion. “…the moment they drink or eat enough of that poison…”
“There is still only a very small chance I could save them.”
Tamtey stared silently across the dying swamp. The grief in the air felt suffocating.
“Tamtey.” Her voice steadied slightly. “Take heart Tamtey, there is still something you can do to help them, something I can’t do.”
“I am not a fighter.”
The faintest bitterness lingered there. “So do what you do best.”
“Kick the RDA’s ass.”
The corner of Tamtey’s mouth twitched weakly.
“Take that base down.”
“The forest will bounce back.”
“And no other animals will suffer the same fate…”
Her voice quieted sadly. “…at least not in that area.”
Tamtey looked out across the poisoned swamp one final time. Then his expression hardened. “Will do, (Y/n).”
And as he switched channels toward Priya—
The young Sarentu felt nothing but admiration. Because even heartbroken— (Y/n) still thought first about protecting what could still be saved.
(Y/n) sat staring at her notebook with visible frustration. The pages blurred together beneath tired eyes while her pencil tapped restlessly against the paper.
She hated this. Hated sitting still. Hated feeling useless.
Her mind kept drifting back toward the polluted swamp.
Toward dying animals she could not help. Toward unfinished research and half-tested ideas sitting untouched back at the sanctuary.
She hated how she could forget that looming issue so quickly.
The longer she sat doing nothing—The worse the restless feeling became.
Finally she shut the notebook with a soft thud.
“…No.”
There were loopholes here. She was very good at loopholes. Research technically was not field work. Reviewing notes was not strenuous.
Tinkering definitely did not count as dangerous activity.
Probably.
With that reasoning firmly established in her head she pushed herself up carefully and headed through the base until she found Teylan sitting with Alex near one of the maintenance stations.
Alex looked up immediately suspicious.“Why are you walking around?”
“I am allowed to walk.”
Teylan immediately looked relieved seeing her upright again. “Hey, (Y/n).”
(Y/n) leaned lightly against the doorway still visibly tired despite pretending otherwise. “I need a favor.”
Teylan straightened instantly. “What is it?”
“Could you and Ri’nela grab some things from the sanctuary for me?”
Alex narrowed his eyes immediately. “What things?”
“My notes.”
“Research samples.”
“Some equipment.”
Alex stared at her flatly. “That does not sound like resting.”
“It technically is.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Before the argument could continue Nor walked in overhearing the last part.
“Ri’nela went out for the afternoon.” He crossed his arms. “I will help Teylan.”
(Y/n) blinked slightly surprised. Then smiled softly. “Thank you.”
“If I am stuck on bedrest for several days…”
Her fingers brushed against the notebook tucked beneath her arm. “…I can at least review my notes and tinker with things.”
Alex pointed at her immediately.“Tinkering is not resting.”
“It basically is.”
“It literally is not.”
(Y/n) ignored him completely.
Teylan meanwhile looked excited by the idea of visiting the sanctuary again.“Sure.”
Nor still looked mildly skeptical.
“What exactly are we getting?”
“My satchel near the workbench. Three notebooks tied together with cord.”
“A storage crate beneath the herb shelves.”
“And—”
Her expression suddenly shifted slightly. “Oh.”
Nor narrowed his eyes immediately. “What?”
(Y/n) pointed at him very seriously. “Guard your toes.”
“…What?”
“The pups will absolutely go for them.”
Teylan immediately burst out laughing remembering the sharp little viperwolf teeth.
Nor looked offended. “They bite people?”
“They bite everything,” (Y/n) corrected. “They are learning.”
Alex snorted softly already looking entertained at the mental image.
Nor sighed dramatically. “If I lose a toe because of your demon pups—”
“They only bite if they like you.”
That somehow made Nor look even less reassured.
By the time Tamtey arrived at the resistance base later that evening— (Y/n) had somehow taken over one of the very few free benches,
Notebooks covered nearly every available surface. Open pages filled with cramped handwriting and sketched diagrams sprawled across tables and chairs alike.
Several glass vials bubbled gently over controlled heat sources while strips of drying plants hung from improvised racks nearby.
The air smelled earthy. Sharp. Medicinal.
At the center of it all— (Y/n) sat in a rolling chair.
Rather than walking between stations she simply pushed herself from one setup to another with her feet. A steaming distillation apparatus hissed softly beside her while golden liquid slowly dripped through tubing into a collection flask.
Tamtey stopped in the doorway staring. “…You were unconscious from a seizure a few days ago.”
(Y/n) rolled from one station to another without looking up. “I am sitting.”
Tamtey shook his head slowly. “This is not what resting looks like.”
“Sure it is.” She gestured vaguely around herself. “I am stationary.”
“You built a chemistry lab.”
“A temporary chemistry lab.”
That somehow sounded worse.
Tamtey rubbed at his face before finally stepping closer. “What are you even doing now?”
That immediately caught her full attention.
(Y/n) straightened slightly excitement flickering through the exhaustion still lingering across her pale features. “You got me thinking.”
Tamtey blinked. “…That sounds dangerous.”
She pointed toward one of the bubbling flasks. “What I have worked out so far about dapophet pods…”
She carefully lifted one of the small vials holding it toward the light. “…is that concentrated extracts slow the poisoning effect.”
Tamtey frowned trying to follow. “So it cures it?”
“No.” Her excitement dimmed slightly.
“It fights back against the toxin.”
“Slows progression.”
“Reduces organ failure rates temporarily.”
“But it does not neutralize the poison.”
She sighed quietly frustrated. “It buys time.”
Tamtey’s expression softened slightly.
“That still sounds useful.”
“It is.” (Y/n) rolled toward another notebook flipping through pages rapidly. “But you had me thinking.”
Her voice quieted more seriously now. “Nothing is going to politely wait for me to find a cure.”
Outside somewhere deeper in the base machinery hummed softly.
(Y/n)’s fingers tightened faintly around the notebook. “And you are not going to destroy every RDA refinery before more animals are poisoned.”
Tamtey looked guilty because… No. He probably could not. Not all of them. Not fast enough.
“So if I cannot stop the poisoning entirely yet…”
(Y/n) gestured toward the distillation setup again. “…then I need something that at least keeps creatures alive long enough for treatment.”
Tamtey stared at the scattered notes surrounding her. Page after page. Calculations. Chemical reactions. Plant combinations. Toxin progression sketches.
All worked on by someone who still looked pale and exhausted enough she probably should have still been asleep.
“You really cannot sit still can you?” he asked softly.
(Y/n) leaned back in the rolling chair looking mildly offended. “I am literally sitting right now.”
Tamtey laughed despite himself.
(Y/n)’s gaze drifted briefly toward one of the pages detailing toxin effects on local wildlife. Her expression softened sadly. “They do not deserve to suffer because humans are careless.”
Tamtey leaned against one of the tables watching (Y/n) roll herself between stations in her chair while another vial slowly dripped concentrated dapophet extract into a glass container.
“You should have seen the swamp.” The amusement faded from his expression immediately. “Dead scarab crawlers everywhere.”
“The water was black.”
He swallowed faintly. “I watched a Sturmbeast collapse and die.”
(Y/n)’s hands slowed over the notebook in her lap. Pain crossed her face immediately, quiet heartbreak.
“I know, Tamtey.” Her voice softened heavily. “It is a slow and cruel way to go.”
The room quieted briefly after that. The bubbling of the distillation equipment suddenly sounding much louder.
Then Tamtey straightened slightly trying to shift the mood. “Well…”
A grin tugged faintly at his face. “We had a win today.”
That got her attention immediately.
“We discovered what is making the Kinglor flowers close. What has been distressing the Kinglor.”
(Y/n)’s tired face lit up instantly. “That is excellent.”
“Yeah.” Tamtey rubbed awkwardly at the back of his neck now. “And tomorrow morning…”
His ears flicked nervously. “…I climb the Ikran rookery to bond with an Ikran so I can take down those balloons that are causing it.”
(Y/n) smiled brightly, “You are doing what?”
Tamtey laughed nervously. “I am a little worried.”
“A little?”
“That is why I am here. I need a pep talk.”
(Y/n) stared at him in disbelief. “Why on earth would you want a pep talk from me?”
“Please, (Y/n).”
Tamtey clasped his hands together. “You are wise.”
“No I am not.”
“You are emotionally supportive.”
“I wouldn’t say that.”
“That counts.”
(Y/n) sighed deeply rubbing at her face. “Fine.”
Tamtey immediately straightened expectantly.
She pointed at him very seriously. “My biggest advice?”
“Yes?”
“Do not fall.”
Tamtey blinked. “…That is your wisdom?”
“If you do fall…”
She continued calmly. “…try very hard not to die.”
Tamtey burst out laughing. “Wonderful advice.”
“Well if you survive the fall I can at least patch you up.”
“That is reassuring.”
“It should be.”
Tamtey grinned shaking his head. “Good thing is soon we will not need nectar cubes anymore once those balloons are dealt with.”
(Y/n) sighed dramatically leaning back in the rolling chair. “Unfortunately for me they have become Teylan’s new favorite snack.”
Tamtey laughed loudly. “I do not think your nectar cube making days are over.”
“I created a monster.”
He grinned. “You know Etuwa and Nefika are wondering when you are joining them for tea again.”
(Y/n) immediately looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole. Her face heated instantly.
Tamtey saw it and nearly doubled over laughing. “Oh Eywa there it is.”
“Stop.” She threw a notebook at him, he blocked it, picked it up and put it back on the table.
“You are blushing.”
“I am not.”
“You absolutely are.”
(Y/n) buried her face briefly in her hands while Tamtey continued grinning mercilessly.
“But really…” His expression gentled. “How are you doing since the seizure?”
(Y/n) paused. The humor faded slightly from her face. “Same old, same old.” But she looked exhausted. Painfully so.n Her eyes still shadowed with fatigue. nHer movements slower than usual.
Even sitting upright seemed to drain energy from her.
Before Tamtey could press further—
Heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Both immediately recognized them.
“You are meant to be resting.” So’lek’s voice cut through the room firmly.
(Y/n) jumped slightly in her chair like a startled Hexepede. She turned quickly toward him nervously rubbing the back of her neck.
Tamtey lost the remaining battle against laughter entirely.
“I am resting,” she argued immediately.
So’lek looked around the room once. Notebooks everywhere. Boiling glassware. Strange equipment.
His expression flattened. “No you are not. You are working.”
Without another word he crossed the room and immediately began gathering notebooks into neat piles.
“Hey.”
“So’lek.”
He ignored her completely switching off the heating elements one by one.
“My research—”
“I will have none of this.” His tone left absolutely no room for argument. “You are eating.”
“And getting a full night’s rest.”
“But my research—”
“You are stubborn.”
(Y/n) looked scandalized.
“I am simply tinkering, there is nothing exhausting about this.”
“You are impossible.”
“That too,” Tamtey muttered helpfully.
(Y/n) frowned at him. “Thanks for the support Tamtey.”
So’lek finally moved beside her chair gently but firmly guiding it away from the workstations. “Come.”
“I can walk myself.”
“You look one strong breeze away from collapsing again.”
Tamtey snorted loudly.
(Y/n) pointed accusingly at him. “Do not encourage him.”
“I am enjoying this too much.”
So’lek continued pushing the rolling chair toward the kitchen despite her protests.
“My extracts are cooling.”
“They will survive.”
“My notes are not organized.”
“They were never organized.”
(Y/n) folded her arms dramatically while being wheeled away against her will.
“You are both frustrating.”
“Yes,” So’lek answered immediately. “Because apparently you are allergic to resting.”
Tamtey laughed shaking his head while going to the kitchen grabbing several containers of nectar cubes from the fridge.
“Well…” He started backing toward the doorway. “I should head off.”
“Big morning tomorrow.”
He grinned toward So’lek sympathetically. “Good luck handling that.”
So’lek guided her stubbornly toward the kitchen while (Y/n) continued protesting the entire way.
“I was in the middle of something important.”
“You were in the middle of ignoring your health.”
They entered the kitchen just as Nalin walked past carrying medical supplies.
Her eyes landed immediately on the scene before her. (Y/n) being escorted in a rolling chair by an extremely unimpressed So’lek while she looked personally offended by the concept of food and sleep.
Nalin visibly brightened. “Thank god.”
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes immediately. “Do not start.”
“Someone that can actually talk sense into her.” Nalin pointed directly at So’lek. “Do not let her back near those chemicals tonight.”
Then without another word she kept walking clearly delighted to hand responsibility over to someone else for once.
(Y/n) sighed.
So’lek ignored her entirely already rummaging through. Metal doors opened. Closed.Opened again.
“You keep your food in strange places.”
“The fridge.”
So’lek crouched opening the fridge next. “There are too many containers.”
“Bottom shelf left side.”
“That narrows nothing.”
(Y/n) pinched the bridge of her nose tiredly.
“Bottom part of the fridge. There are ration trays.”
He finally found them. “Hm.”
“You sound surprised.”
“You eat this willingly?”
“I don’t exactly have a choice.”
He shut the fridge and held up the tray suspiciously. “What now?”
She pointed lazily across the kitchen. “White box over there.”
“Press the button.”
“It heats food.”
So’lek eyed the microwave like it personally offended him. “This tiny box cooks food?”
“It is not magic So’lek.”
“It sounds like magic.”
He pressed the button anyway. The microwave hummed loudly.
So’lek immediately narrowed his eyes at it.
(Y/n) watched him with visible amusement. “You look like you are waiting for it to explode.”
“I do not trust human machines.”
The microwave beeped suddenly.
So’lek visibly twitched.
(Y/n) burst into tired laughter.
He opened the microwave with deep suspicion before carrying the warmed tray back toward her.
“I can get it myself you know.”
“No.”
“You are currently wheeling me around against my will.”
“And yet you are still somehow trying to work.”
He set the tray down firmly in front of her. “Eat.”
“Fork please.”
He stared at her. “…What is a fork?”
“The spiky thing in that drawer over there.”
So’lek opened the drawer finding several utensils. “…Humans willingly place tiny spears in their mouths?”
He handed her the fork anyway.
She took the fork. “I’m fine, I can take care of myself.”
“No you are not.”
“I am just tired and exhausted.” She shrugged lightly. “Nothing out of the usual.”
That answer immediately made his expression harden. Because that was exactly the problem.
(Y/n) treated exhaustion like weather. Like something unavoidable rather than dangerous.
So’lek crouched slightly beside her chair until they were level. “(Y/n).”
His voice lowered quieter now. More serious. “I will remain in this base myself if that is what it takes to make you rest properly.”
She groaned softly. “You are so bossy.”
“And you are impossible.”
He crossed his arms. “I am new to what a seizure is, but I know that it was serious (y/n), that there was a chance you wouldn’t have woken up and your body now needs time to recover.”
“And now I find you surrounded by boiling chemicals pretending that sitting in a chair makes this acceptable.”
(Y/n) stabbed dramatically at the ration tray with the fork. “I was sitting.”
“That is not the point. You work until your body physically forces you to stop.”
His eyes softened slightly then though worry still lingered heavily there. “And you say it so casually.”
(Y/n)’s movements slowed faintly.
Because underneath the bickering— She could hear it. Fear. He was scared.
So’lek reached over brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear gently. “You frightened me greatly.”
The words came quieter now. “And I do not think you understand how close I came to losing my mind while waiting for you to wake.”
(Y/n)’s expression softened immediately.
“You are not supposed to say things like that while I am trying to be difficult.”
A faint reluctant warmth touched his face. “You are always difficult.”
So’lek took full advantage of that momentary silence. “Eat your food.”
So’lek watched her poke halfheartedly at the ration tray and take a reluctant bite of food.
“Must you truly eat that?”
(Y/n) sighed already knowing exactly what expression he was making. “It is the only option we have.”
She scooped another bite into her mouth looking thoroughly unimpressed by it herself. “If it were not for you I would probably still be eating grey sludge out of white bags.”
So’lek looked horrified. “…Grey sludge?”
“Yes.”
“That sounds deeply unnatural.”
“It was.”
She pointed the fork toward the tray. “This at least tastes vaguely like cardboard.”
The warrior stared down at the food like it personally insulted him. “I wish you did not have to eat such…” He struggled visibly for the correct word. “…filth.”
(Y/n) laughed tiredly. “Trust me.” She swallowed another bite. “This is significantly better than the grey sludge.”
So’lek still looked unconvinced. Like he was contemplating marching into the forest himself to hunt something more acceptable for her to eat.
Eventually (Y/n) finally finished eating.
Immediately So’lek took the tray from her before she could even attempt standing.
“You know I am capable of walking.”
“Yes.” He stacked the tray away calmly. “But something tells me the moment I let go of you…”
His eyes narrowed knowingly.“…you will try returning to your work.”
(Y/n) considered lying. Then sighed. “I do want to go back to work.”
“I know.”
So’lek moved behind the rolling chair immediately. “Bed.” The single word left absolutely no room for negotiation.
(Y/n) groaned as he escorted her toward her quarters.
“You are enjoying this power far too much.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“No.”
“You absolutely are.”
He ignored her entirely continuing down the hallway while she muttered about unfair treatment beneath her breath.
When they finally reached her quarters So’lek stopped the chair carefully beside the doorway.
(Y/n) stood slowly this time steadier than earlier though still visibly tired.
She turned toward him. Then gently her smaller hand caught his large one. Warm fingers squeezing softly against his palm.
A simple touch. Yet it immediately softened something deep inside him. “Goodnight, So’lek.”
She started toward the doorway.
And suddenly—He missed her other body fiercely.
Missed the ease of simply pulling her close and kissing her whenever he wished.
Because now, in this fragile human body— He hesitated constantly.
Terrified of hurting her accidentally. Humans broke so easily beneath his hands.
And after watching her seize helplessly on that med bay bed— Fear still lingered deep in his chest.
His eyes lifted toward hers afterward filled with quiet warmth and something painfully tender.
“Rest.”
(Y/n)’s expression softened immediately.
Then she squeezed his hand one final time before disappearing quietly into her quarters leaving So’lek standing alone outside already missing her warmth again despite her only being several feet away behind the door.
Even after the door shut behind her he lingered a moment longer standing silently in the hallway listening to the faint movement inside.
Making sure she actually went to bed. Only then did he finally turn away.
And nearly walk straight into Alma.
She had been heading down the corridor carrying several folders beneath one arm but stopped the moment she saw him.
Silence settled instantly between them.
Alma had faced armed soldiers before. RDA patrols.
But the look So’lek gave her in that moment— It chilled something deep in her spine.
No words were spoken. Because his gaze alone carried enough fury to make the air feel dangerous.
The kind sharpened down into something cold and lethal.
Alma knew immediately. He knew.
And suddenly being alone in that hallway with him felt like standing too close to the edge of a cliff.
So’lek said nothing.
His jaw tightened once. Then he walked past her.
But before continuing— He stopped briefly. Turned slightly. And looked back at her one final time.
If looks could kill— Alma would have been six feet under already.
Then he continued down the hall without another word leaving Alma standing rigidly in place trying to ignore the cold unease curling through her chest.
Ahead— Teylan, Nor, and Ri’nela sat talking quietly amongst themselves.
Ri’nela looked up first. “Oh good.” Relief crossed her face instantly. “Of course you are the one person she actually listens to.”
So’lek lowered himself down tired heaviness of someone who had not properly rested in days. “She does not listen. She argues.”
“That still counts as listening for (Y/n),” Nor muttered.
Teylan nodded immediately. “That is true.”
Ri’nela leaned forward resting her chin in her hand. “She looks exhausted.”
“She is exhausted,” So’lek answered flatly.
Teylan looked thoughtful.
“So…” He hesitated slightly. “How do we stop her from working without upsetting her?”
“That is impossible,” Nor answered immediately.
Ri’nela ignored him. “No seriously. She clearly does not know how to stop herself.”
So’lek’s gaze lowered briefly toward the floor. Because that much was painfully obvious.
(Y/n) only stopped...he can’t think of a time she willingly stopped. Even now she treated rest like punishment rather than necessity.
Teylan perked up slightly. “We could distract her.”
Ri’nela nodded immediately. “Yes. She rests more if she is around people.”
“And less likely to start experimenting with toxins if she is occupied.”
Nor crossed his arms. “So we are essentially babysitting her.”
“Yes,” Ri’nela answered. “Exactly that.”
So’lek looked mildly offended by the term. “She is not a child.”
“No,” Ri’nela agreed. “But she behaves like one when it comes to resting.”
That unfortunately was also true.
Teylan started counting ideas on his fingers.
“Keep her company.”
“Make sure she eats.”
“No letting her disappear into research.”
“And maybe…”
He looked toward So’lek carefully.
“…less stress?”
That immediately hardened So’lek’s expression slightly.
“Yes.” His voice lowered. “That means keeping Alma away from her.”
Silence settled briefly over the group. Because none of them disagreed. Not after what happened.
Ri’nela folded her arms tightly. “She acts calmer when Alma is not around.”
So’lek’s jaw tightened subtly hearing that.
Because now that he noticed it— He saw it constantly. The way (Y/n) immediately became careful around conflict.
Teylan sighed softly.
“She deserves rest,” So’lek corrected quietly.
“Proper rest.”
“Food.”
“Water.”
“And peace.”
Ri’nela pointed toward him immediately. “Good.”
“You are on food duty.”
So’lek blinked once. “…Food duty?”
“You are the only person she listens to when told to eat.”
Nor looked amused now. “She also listens when he tells her to sleep.”
“Barely,” So’lek muttered.
Teylan grinned slightly. “Still more than the rest of us.”
Ri’nela leaned back looking entirely pleased with herself now.
“So we have a plan.”
“Keep her stress low.”
“No work.”
“No Alma.”
“Hydration.”
“Food.”
“Rest.”
Nor raised an eyebrow.
“You forgot one.”
Ri’nela looked confused.
“What?”
Nor smirked faintly toward So’lek. “Apparently regular supervision from Pandora’s grumpiest warrior.”
Teylan burst out laughing immediately.
Even Ri’nela chuckled.
So’lek looked deeply unimpressed.
Yet despite himself—The faintest warmth tugged at the corner of his mouth knowing these people cared enough about (Y/n) to scheme together just to make sure she recovered properly.

Truthful Words
So’lek remained hidden within the forest shadows just beyond the reach of Hometree his broad frame half concealed amongst the forest.
He should have left already.
There was no reason to remain.
(Y/n) was safe inside the Aranahe settlement.
Still, he lingered.
His gaze occasionally drifted upward toward the enormous living structure knowing somewhere high within it the dreamwalker was likely tending gently to wounded creatures while speaking in that soft voice of hers that seemed capable of calming almost anything.
His chest tightened faintly. It was becoming a problem. Because somewhere along the way she had begun slipping beneath his defenses without him noticing.
Like sunlight creeping through gaps in the canopy.
And Eywa help him—
She was like the sun touching a world long left cold and abandoned.
The thought alone unsettled him deeply.
Can he truly allow himself this?
Allow himself happiness?
The very idea felt dangerous. Wrong. Almost selfish.
So’lek had long ago accepted what his life was meant to be. The ghosts of his clan walked beside him always and he carried them willingly.
There had never been room for softness within that life.
Yet now— Now he found himself thinking about small things.
Her laugh. The way she spoke gently to frightened animals. The way she looked at living things like their suffering physically hurt her too.
The warmth of her hand in his.
A faint smile crossed his face before he even realized it had happened.
So’lek immediately frowned afterward. Dangerous. Very dangerous.
Because he could already feel the lines beginning to blur. And that could not happen.
He straightened slightly against the tree behind him forcing his thoughts back toward harsher truths.
Her body was false. A shell. Nothing more. A demon wearing stolen skin designed to mimic the People.
That was the truth. It had to remain the truth.
Because if he allowed himself to forget that—
If he stopped drawing those lines clearly—
Then eventually he would no longer remember where the lies ended and (Y/n) began. And that frightened him more than any battlefield ever had.
So’lek leaned back heavily against the massive tree behind him, folding his arms across his chest while the distant sounds of the forest echoed.
Animals. Wind through the canopy. Life. Pandora alive around him as it always had been.
Yet his thoughts remained hopelessly tangled somewhere else entirely.
With her. Always her lately.
His eyes shut briefly as he exhaled slowly through his nose.
Maybe it would be better if he simply stopped asking these questions altogether. Because every time he tried sorting through what he felt toward the dreamwalker, he only ended up more conflicted than before.
She was a sky person.
That truth should have made this simple. It should have been enough.
His people were dead because of her kind. His home gone because of sky people. Children orphaned. Clans destroyed. Forests poisoned. Everything he had suffered traced back eventually to humans and the greed they brought with them.
He remembered smoke. Gunfire. Bodies.
He remembered the helpless rage of watching Pandora bleed beneath metal and fire.
And through all of it the same face remained attached to destruction in his mind. Sky people. Demons wearing flesh not their own.
So why—Why did she feel so different?
That was the question tormenting him. Because (Y/n) did not fit cleanly into the hatred he had spent years building around humans.
She confused it. Blurred it.
Even now she was inside Hometree helping a wounded Queen because someone asked for help. No bargaining. No hesitation.
Just kindness. Relentless impossible kindness.
And Eywa— He had begun craving her presence.
That realization sat heavily in his chest. Because around her things felt… Quiet. Warm. The endless tension coiled through him from years of war eased slightly whenever she smiled at him. Whenever she nudged him playfully. Whenever she looked at him with those tired eyes of hers.
He hated how easily she affected him. Hated how instinctively protective he had become.
The thought of her hurt unsettled him deeply now.
The thought of Alma speaking cruelly to her had angered him far more than it should have. The thought of her starving herself because she was too exhausted to eat had driven him to raid RDA supply depots without hesitation.
And that hug—
His jaw tightened slightly. He could still remember exactly how she felt in his arms. Small compared to him. Like she belonged there.
That thought alone made guilt twist sharply through his chest. Because she did not belong there. She was not one of the People.
No matter how much his heart tried convincing him otherwise. Her body was fake. Constructed. A shell built to resemble his kind.
He forced himself to remember that again.
A demon wearing false skin.
That line mattered. It needed to matter. Because if he stopped remembering it—
If he stopped holding firmly to the difference between her and the People—
Then eventually he feared he would stop caring about the difference altogether.
And what would that make him?
A warrior who forgot his dead because a gentle dreamwalker made him feel warm? Disloyal? Weak?
His fingers flexed slightly against his arms.
Yet even as he tried forcing those thoughts into place another thought surfaced instead.
(Y/n) quietly sewing repairs into his vest when she thought no one would notice.
None of that felt false. None of it felt like deception. If anything she seemed painfully sincere.
And perhaps that was the true problem.
Because it would have been easier if she were cruel. Easier if she acted like the other sky people. Easier if he could hate her cleanly.
Instead she existed somewhere unbearably in-between.
Not fully human in his eyes anymore. Not truly Na’vi either. Just… (Y/n).
And somehow that made this worse. Because there was no clear place to put her inside his heart.
So’lek tilted his head back against the tree staring upward through the canopy. Maybe he should stop trying to define it. Stop dissecting every feeling. Stop asking himself what this meant.
Because the truth was becoming painfully obvious regardless of how fiercely he resisted it.
He cared for her. Far too much already.
And somewhere deep down beneath all the fear and conflict and guilt— A selfish part of him wanted to continue indulging in her warmth just a little longer before reality eventually tore it away.
His jaw tightened faintly. What was he even doing here?
Truly.
He should have returned to base already. Returned to patrols. To something practical.
Instead, he lingered outside a clan settlement waiting like some restless young warrior because a dreamwalker was inside.
A dreamwalker.
The thought should have sounded absurd. He almost wanted to laugh at himself for it.
Almost.
Because the truth sat heavily in his chest already.
He knew exactly why he remained. Part of him stubbornly fought it.
What made him think he needed to protect this one sky person?
Why her?
He had never cared like this before. Never found himself listening for footsteps. Watching entrances. Tracking whether someone had eaten or rested.
So why her?
The answer came immediately. Because she was gentle. And there was something about that gentleness that settled painfully deep beneath his ribs.
She healed instead of harmed. Nurtured instead of conquered.
Where humans so often tore Pandora apart trying to dominate it— (Y/n) devoted herself entirely toward preserving what suffering she could.
He truly couldn’t get his thoughts to stop churning, in this endless push and pull. The endless conflict. So’lek exhaled slowly looking down toward his hands.
The same hands stained by years of violence. Years of survival. Years of killing. And somehow—
She still looked at him warmly.
The memory of her squeezing his hand before entering Hometree returned uninvited and his chest tightened again.
He knew why he stayed close now. Because somewhere along the way the thought of something happening to her had become unbearable. Not inconvenient. Not regrettable.
Unbearable.
He had seen too much death already. Too many good people swallowed by war.
And selfishly— He did not want it taking her too.
That realization sat quietly between his ribs.
He knew exactly what this was becoming. That was the problem.
Because he could continue drawing lines all he wanted. Could continue reminding himself she wore a false body. Could continue calling her dreamwalker. Sky person. Demon in stolen skin.
But none of those thoughts stopped the truth from growing anyway.
He cared for her. And deep down— He already knew he would do just about anything to keep her safe.
“Hey So’lek, I’m finishing up here.” Her voice crackled softly over the coms and immediately his attention shifted toward the entrance of Hometree, though this time there was something different hidden beneath her words. Nervousness. Subtle. But there.
His ears twitched slightly.
Then he saw movement near pathways leading out from the great tree.
At first glance—He did not recognize her.
The woman stepping into the forest light looked nothing like the exhausted sanctuary healer usually covered in medicinal stains, dirt and leaves.
Rich woven fabrics draped elegantly around her body in flowing layers of deep blues and purples that shifted almost iridescently beneath the sunlight, the delicate material tied softly across her chest while translucent sleeves drifted lightly with every movement she made.
The layered skirts fell in elegant asymmetrical folds around her legs threaded with intricate beadwork and woven details that caught the light whenever she moved.
Around her waist sat braided sashes and small leather pouches woven seamlessly into the outfit rather than hanging awkwardly like practical equipment.
Beads and delicate braids threaded through her hair now framed her face softly. Elegant. Graceful. Beautiful.
The breeze shifted gently through the forest then and finally carried her scent to him. (Y/n).
So’lek stepped silently into her path. And forgot how to speak.
Because Eywa— He had always known she was beautiful. Even before this.
There had always been something quietly elegant about her no matter how exhausted or dishevelled she became tending creatures and throwing herself into work.
But this— This felt unfair.
The Aranahe clothing softened the sharp line between dreamwalker and Na’vi in a way that made something dangerous twist low in his chest.
She looked like she belonged here. Not fully. Never fully. Yet enough that for one terrible selfish moment his mind stopped separating the differences entirely.
And that frightened him.
Because standing there beneath the canopy with the breeze moving softly through her hair—
She looked radiant. Warm like sunlight filtering through Pandora’s forests.
Eywa. Was this a test?
(Y/n) shifted slightly beneath his stare suddenly very aware that he had gone completely silent.
Which absolutely did not help her nerves. “So uh…” She rubbed awkwardly at one of her arms. “I think the Aranahe were… more than happy with my help.”
Her voice softened slightly afterward. “What do you think?” The question came shyly. Carefully.
And So’lek’s chest tightened painfully because she looked genuinely uncertain despite how stunning she was. He forced himself to breathe evenly. To think. To remember his lines.
Dreamwalker. False body. Shell.
But the thoughts felt weaker now staring at her like this.
Dangerously weaker.
Because no matter how fiercely he reminded himself what she was— None of it stopped the warmth spreading through his chest looking at her. None of it stopped the fierce instinctive pull toward her.
And none of it stopped the quiet impossible thought whispering through his mind that she looked beautiful enough to bring entire forests to silence.
His gaze moved slowly across the woven fabrics and delicate beadwork before finally settling on her face again. She looked nervous. Hopeful. Waiting for his answer.
“It suits you very well.” The words came lower and rougher than intended.
(Y/n)’s breath caught softly. Because there was something in the way he said it. Honest. Completely honest. And suddenly her heart was racing all over again.
Ulrr chirped smugly from her shoulder as though fully aware of exactly what was happening between them.
Neither acknowledged him.
Because So’lek still could not quite tear his eyes away from her.
“You think so?” (Y/n)’s voice came quieter now, softer beneath his stare while her fingers fidgeted slightly against the woven fabric near her waist. “Nefika, Etuwa and Tamtey practically forced me into this.”
There was embarrassed amusement in her tone but beneath it— Nervousness.
Because So’lek had gone completely still looking at her and she could not tell what that silence meant.
His eyes remained fixed on her. On the flowing fabrics. The intricate beadwork woven through her hair. The soft colors that somehow made her seem even gentler than before.
And Eywa—The sight of her standing there waiting uncertainly for his opinion made something deep in his chest ache painfully.
Because she looked beautiful. Not simply attractive. Beautiful.
In a way that stole breath from his lungs and made the world around him momentarily fade quieter.
The dangerous thought came uninvited again.
His jaw tightened almost immediately afterward.
No.
He should not think like that. Could not think like that.
Yet the feeling remained anyway. That aching pull low in his chest urging him closer toward her warmth despite every instinct telling him to keep distance between them.
She was not his. Could never truly be his.
A dreamwalker. A sky person.
And still—Still he wanted.
The realization unsettled him enough he had to steady himself against it internally before it showed too clearly across his face.
(Y/n) meanwhile was becoming increasingly aware that So’lek looked like he was fighting demons internally while staring at her. Which was not helping her nerves at all. “…So’lek?”
His gaze finally lifted fully to hers again. “You are beautiful.”
(Y/n)’s breath caught instantly. Her entire face warmed. Because So’lek was not a man who gave compliments lightly. If he said something—He meant it.
And the way he looked at her while saying it made her heart stumble helplessly inside her chest.
Meanwhile So’lek immediately regretted absolutely nothing despite how dangerous the truth felt leaving his mouth.
Because it was true. Painfully true.
His heart hammered harder against his ribs now while that possessive aching pull remained buried beneath his sternum.
He wanted— Eywa. He wanted her close. Wanted her warmth. Wanted her smile directed at him. Wanted to remain beside her.
And that terrified him. Because the feelings growing inside him were becoming far too large to ignore now.
He swallowed them back down forcibly before they could fully surface across his expression.
Steady yourself.
Still— His hand moved almost instinctively toward hers. Large fingers gently enveloping her smaller hand once more. Warmth spread through him immediately at the contact. Calm.
(Y/n)’s pulse fluttered rapidly beneath his touch though she did not pull away. Instead, her fingers curled softly around his hand in return. And for a few quiet moments neither of them spoke while Pandora hummed around them and the distance between them felt impossibly small.
“I, uh…” (Y/n) very suddenly remembered how to forget every coherent thought she had ever possessed the moment his hand settled around hers again. Her heart was racing so loudly she was half convinced he could hear it.
Which honestly— He probably could.
She looked away briefly trying to regain some semblance of composure while Ulrr watched the entire interaction with deeply unhelpful interest from atop her shoulder.
“I have to go collect more nectar for the Kinglor,” she managed eventually. Smooth enough. Mostly. “Are you… coming with me?”
There it was again. That careful uncertainty. Like she genuinely expected him to say no. Even now.
Her fingers shifted slightly in his before she added quickly— “I do not want to inconvenience you.”
So’lek’s expression tightened faintly hearing those words again.
Inconvenience. Why did she insist on thinking of herself that way?
After everything she had done for others—
After all the lives she carried on exhausted shoulders—
She still spoke like taking up space beside someone required apology.
His thumb brushed subtly against the back of her hand before he even consciously realized he had done it. “You are not an inconvenience.”
His voice came low and steady.
And Eywa— The nervous warmth in her eyes nearly undid him again. He steadied himself internally before continuing. “I told you already.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened softly at that. Most people eventually grew frustrated with how consumed she became by her work. Or exhausted by how often she disappeared into the sanctuary.
Yet So’lek kept choosing to remain nearby anyway. Even while clearly fighting himself over it.
“Then…” She smiled shyly now. “…I suppose I would like the company.”
Something warm unfurled quietly through So’lek’s chest hearing that.
Because she wanted him there. She simply wanted his company.
And selfishly— He realized he wanted hers just as badly. “Then I shall accompany you.”
(Y/n)’s smile softened further afterward and for a moment So’lek found himself staring at it longer than he should have.
The Aranahe clothing truly did suit her. Too well. The flowing fabrics moved softly around her with every shift of the breeze while delicate beads threaded through her hair caught the forest light.
She looked softer somehow. Warmer. And far too easy to imagine beside him.
Dangerous thoughts. Very dangerous thoughts.
Still—He did not let go of her hand as they began walking together into the forest.
So’lek walked beside her through the glowing forest with her hand still resting quietly within his and every instinct inside him screamed that this was dangerous. Because this was how lines blurred. How convictions weakened. How a warrior forgot himself.
He stared ahead into the forest forcing his breathing to remain steady while (Y/n) walked beside him softly speaking about where the richest nectar flowers usually bloomed during this season or if would be better to find some hives, a combination may be best, trying to fill the silence between them.
He only half heard her. Because his thoughts had become tangled somewhere far more dangerous.
No.
He cannot be with a dreamwalker. That thought came firmly. Immediately. Like a shield raised against something already breaking through.
She was a sky person. A dreamwalker. A woman wearing borrowed skin. And his people had suffered too greatly at the hands of her kind for him to forget that.
He had spent years surviving hatred. Loss. Years building walls strong enough to keep grief and loneliness contained beneath duty.
He should not allow this.
Should not indulge the warmth of her hand in his. Should not crave her smile the way he already did. Should not find himself wondering what it would feel like if she leaned against him again.
Dangerous thoughts. Weak thoughts.
Yet another voice quietly reminded him—It was not impossible. The thought unsettled him instantly. Because it had happened before.
Dreamwalkers and the People.
Humans and Na’vi.
Connections formed despite war and difference and impossibility.
He hated that his mind went there at all. Because suddenly the future no longer felt entirely unreachable. And that made wanting it far worse.
His grip around her hand tightened almost imperceptibly.
(Y/n) glanced toward him briefly. “You alright?”
He nodded once automatically. But internally conflict twisted painfully through him. Was it okay to be this selfish? To want this? To want her?
Because deep down he already knew the answer.
If he allowed himself to continue down this path—He would not stop at simply wanting her company.
Already it was growing beyond that.
He wanted her safe. Close. Happy. Wanted her looking at him with that soft warmth in her eyes. Wanted to continue walking beside her like this without needing to question it.
And perhaps worst of all— A part of him wanted to be looked at by her the way she looked at wounded and frightened creatures. With gentleness. Care.
His chest tightened painfully. Because no one had looked at him that way in a very long time. Maybe ever.
He had become so accustomed to being feared, respected or relied upon as a weapon that the quiet softness she offered him felt almost unreal.
And selfishly— He did not want to let it go.
The realization sat heavily in his chest .
(Y/n) continued speaking quietly beside him completely unaware of the war raging internally within the man holding her hand.
Or perhaps—Part of her knew. Because every now and then she glanced toward him with that same nervous softness in her eyes like she too was wondering whether this path between them was dangerous.
Still—Neither let go.
So’lek tried focusing on the forest. On anything except her.
But it was becoming increasingly difficult when she walked beside him looking like this.
Beautiful. Far too beautiful.
And worst of all— She looked comfortable beside him now. No longer tense the way she had been earlier leaving Hometree. Her hand rested naturally within his.
His gaze shifted toward her while she spoke quietly about nectar flowers and medicinal properties, explaining which blooms remained healthy and enough to sustain the Kinglor colonies.
Then her lips curved slightly when Ulrr made an annoyed sound from her shoulder.
And So’lek’s thoughts abruptly stopped.
His eyes drifted downward before he could stop himself. Toward her mouth.
Something deep in his chest tightened sharply. Because suddenly there was an instinctive possessive pull inside him so strong it startled him.
A wanting so fierce and immediate it almost felt physical. To pull her closer. To silence her thoughts beneath his mouth. To consume every ounce of warmth and softness she offered until nothing cold remained inside him.
The intensity of it frightened him instantly.
Eywa. He would forget himself completely if he indulged thoughts like that. Forget duty. Forget caution. Forget every line he had tried desperately to maintain between them.
His jaw tightened hard enough to ache.
So instead—He simply held her hand tighter.
(Y/n) looked toward him immediately feeling the subtle shift in his grip. Her heart fluttered softly again. “You alright?”
So’lek forced his gaze back upward meeting her eyes again instead of where it had drifted moments before. “Yes.” The answer came rougher now. Lower.
And something about the sound of his voice made warmth rise immediately into her face despite not fully understanding why.
She moved slightly closer beside him anyway without thinking.
And So’lek nearly lost whatever remained of his self control entirely.
Every emotion inside (Y/n) felt dangerously close to spilling over. Her heart had been racing since the moment he stepped into her path outside Hometree and looked at her like he had forgotten how to breathe.
And now— Now he was still holding her hand while they walked together through forest like it was the most natural thing in the world.
He had not pulled away. Not once. If anything his grip only seemed to tighten whenever she doubted herself. Her chest ached softly with it. Because she could feel it now. How deeply she had fallen for him somewhere along the way.
Like roots sinking deeper into soil before she realized how impossible it would be to pull free again. She loved him.
She loved him.
The realization no longer frightened her nearly as much as it should have because standing beside him like this somehow made the feeling seem terrifyingly easy.
And part of her desperately hoped—
No.
Prayed—
That he could somehow feel it through the way her hand held his. Through the way she instinctively moved closer beside him. Through every glance she failed to hide.
Because if she were absolutely certain he loved her back— She would tell him right now. No hesitation. No fear.
The words sat right there behind her ribs trying desperately to rise.
What was she waiting for?
He was not letting go. He was not pulling away.
Even now after all his internal conflict she could feel his hand remaining steady around hers.
And when she unconsciously moved closer earlier— He had not stepped back.
If anything she swore she felt him lean ever so slightly toward her in return.
So why could she not say it?
Why did the words refuse climbing past the tightness in her chest?
Because if she was wrong—
If she misunderstood—
It would destroy this fragile beautiful thing forming between them.
So instead she quietly tightened her grip around his hand.
And immediately So’lek’s heart nearly stopped again feeling it.
The subtle squeeze carried so much unspoken emotion behind it that he almost looked toward her in alarm.
Because Eywa— If she kept looking at him like this he was going to forget every reason he had for resisting her entirely.
Meanwhile (Y/n)’s thoughts had become progressively more useless with every passing second.
Because realistically— How exactly was she supposed to collect nectar like this?
Her brain barely functioned anymore.
She was supposed to be locating healthy feeding flowers and hives for stressed Kinglor colonies and instead she was internally spiraling because So’lek’s hand was warm and large around hers and every time she glanced at him her stomach did embarrassing things.
Ulrr chirped knowingly from her shoulder.
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes at him immediately. “Not a single thought from you.”
The prolemuris made an incredibly smug noise anyway.
So’lek glanced sideways toward her. “What did he do?”
“He is judging me.”
“That seems fair.”
(Y/n) gasped softly in betrayal while So’lek’s mouth twitched faintly at the corner despite himself.
And suddenly— Everything felt strangely light.
“So’lek.” Her voice came so quiet it almost disappeared beneath the sounds of the forest.
He stopped immediately.
The two of them stood motionless.
(Y/n) slowly turned toward him fully.
And Eywa—There were a thousand emotions in her eyes. Warmth. Fear. Hope. Longing.
Every feeling she had spent weeks swallowing down sat openly within her gaze now while she looked up at him like she wanted to say something life changing and terrifying all at once.
So’lek’s chest tightened painfully. Because he knew.
He knew exactly what sat behind those eyes because it mirrored the war raging inside his own chest.
Still— His gaze remained steady on hers. Focused entirely on her. “(Y/n).”
The way he said her name nearly undid her. Soft. Careful. Like something precious.
His hand remained firmly around hers while his other slowly lifted toward her face.
(Y/n)’s breath caught instantly.
Large fingers gently cupped her cheek with a tenderness so opposite to the warrior he presented to the world that it made her chest ache. He touched her like she might disappear if he was not careful.
Her heart slammed wildly against her ribs so hard she genuinely thought she might die from it. Because this was real. This was actually happening.
And So’lek—
Stoic terrifying So’lek—was looking at her like she was something beautiful enough to ruin him.
He leaned closer slowly.Like he was giving himself every opportunity to stop. Yet he did not.
His eyes flicked briefly toward her lips and the restraint inside him nearly shattered completely.
Because Eywa— He wanted. Wanted to know what her mouth felt like against his. Wanted to feel her closer into him. Wanted to finally stop fighting this impossible thing growing between them.
And for one terrifying beautiful moment—
(Y/n) thought he was going to kiss her.
Then—
Gunshots cracked violently through the forest.
Both of them snapped apart instinctively.
So’lek’s entire body shifted immediately from warmth into lethal alertness while his ears flicked toward the distant sounds echoing through the trees.
Another burst followed somewhere far off. RDA.
(Y/n)’s pulse still raced wildly from what almost happened while adrenaline now crashed harshly into the moment.
But even as they separated—
So’lek never let go of her hand. Instead his grip tightened protectively around hers while his eyes scanned the forest sharply.
And somehow that tiny detail—That even startled into survival instincts he still refused to let go of her—Making her heart ache even harder than before.
So’lek’s attention remained fixed toward the distant sounds of gunfire echoing through the forest. Yet even now—
Even with danger nearby—Part of his focus remained entirely on her.
(Y/n) still stood close enough he could feel the warmth of her body beside him while her pulse raced wildly beneath the hand he still held.
His chest tightened faintly.
Another burst of gunfire echoed faintly through the trees. Closer this time.
So’lek’s jaw hardened immediately. Reluctantly he released her hand though his fingers lingered for a brief second longer than necessary before lifting toward her face once more.
Gentle. Always unexpectedly gentle with her.
He brushed several loose strands of hair carefully away from her face, tucking them back while his thumb briefly skimmed across her cheek.
The touch nearly melted her where she stood.
“Stay here,” he said quietly. His voice had shifted again. Warrior once more. “Stay out of sight.”
(Y/n) swallowed softly trying very hard not to think about the fact he had almost kissed her moments ago.
“You’ll come back?” The question slipped out before she could stop it.
Something softened immediately in his eyes hearing it. “Yes.”
“I will return.”
She believed him completely because So’lek did not make promises lightly.
If he said he would return—Then he would crawl through fire to do so.
(Y/n) nodded softly despite the reluctance twisting painfully in her chest now that he was stepping away from her again. “Be careful.”
His gaze lingered on her one final second.
Then he melted silently into the forest shadows almost unnaturally fast for someone his size until only the distant movement of branches hinted where he had gone.
(Y/n) remained where he left her, one hand still pressed unconsciously against the warmth lingering on her cheek from his touch.
Her heart still raced from everything that almost happened between them. From the look in his eyes. From how close he had been.
(Y/n) remained tucked beneath the shelter of the trees long after So’lek disappeared into the forest shadows, her eyes lingering on the space where he had vanished while distant gunfire echoed faintly through Pandora’s wilderness.
One hand still rested unconsciously against her cheek where his fingers had brushed her skin moments earlier.
Her heart fluttered softly all over again at the memory.
He had almost kissed her.
The thought alone made her entire chest feel light and unbearably full at the same time. She leaned back lightly against the tree behind her and let out a quiet breath while Ulrr curled around her shoulders sleepily unaware of the emotional catastrophe currently unfolding inside her.
Her thoughts drifted naturally back toward the beginning.
Toward the first months after she arrived in the west. Back when So’lek barely tolerated her existence.
Whenever their paths crossed, they would inevitably end up bickering over something. Her sanctuary. Her lack of weapons. The danger she willingly wandered into. How stubborn she was. How grumpy he was.
She smiled faintly to herself remembering it.
At the time she thought he simply found her irritating.
Actually— He probably still did. But even back then…He always watched her.
That was what stood out most, now looking back. No matter how much they argued or snapped at one another, she would eventually notice him nearby again later.
Lingering silently at the edge of the forest. Watching from a distance while she worked. Never interfering. Never truly approaching either.
Just there.
Like some massive brooding shadow constantly keeping an eye on her despite pretending he wanted nothing to do with her.
And slowly—
Without either of them fully noticing—
That distance had begun closing.
First it became brief conversations. Then lingering longer near her sanctuary. Then helping her expand shelters. Helping bury the dead. Bringing her proper food. Waiting outside Hometree.
Holding her hand.
Her smile softened helplessly. Because somewhere along the way the terrifying warrior who once glared at her from across clearings had started looking at her like she was something precious.
Something worth protecting.
And somehow—
Against every expectation— She had watched his icy guarded heart begin melting piece by piece.
Not for everyone. Never for everyone.
So’lek would always remain intimidating. Sharp edged. Dangerous.
But with her— There was gentleness now. Quiet softness hidden beneath all that steel.
The way he brushed hair from her face. The way he looked at her like he was fighting himself every second he remained beside her.
It made warmth spread through her chest so strongly it almost hurt. Because she knew how hard this was for him.
Knew that he knew this could never be. Yet he kept choosing her anyway.
Again.
And again.
And again.
(Y/n) tilted her head back lightly against the tree while a fond almost lovestruck smile crossed her face before she could stop it.
Somewhere deeper in the forest another burst of gunfire echoed.
Her smile faded slightly afterward though the warmth remained firmly rooted in her chest.
Because she knew him now.
And she knew—
No matter how dangerous the fighting became—
He would come back.
It did not take So’lek long.
The gunfire ceased almost as quickly as it had started.
A small RDA waste-burning crew.
He moved through them easily, swift bursts of gunfire followed by silence settling once more beneath the canopy.
Sky people burning their foul waste into Pandora’s air.
Disgusting.
By the time the smoke began thinning through the trees So’lek was already heading back toward where he left her.
There she was.
Exactly where he told her to stay.
Relief loosened quietly in his chest the moment he saw her safe.
(Y/n) straightened instantly the second she spotted him emerging from the forest and hurried toward him before he even fully reached the clearing.
“So’lek.”
Her eyes immediately scanned him for injuries. Blood. Signs of pain. Instinctive healer habits.
So’lek watched her quietly while she checked over his arms and chest with lightly worried eyes. “I am alright,” he assured.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
His voice softened slightly. “They were merely disposing waste.”
(Y/n)’s nose wrinkled faintly. “Disgusting.”
He almost smiled at that.
She relaxed slightly afterward once fully convinced he was unharmed though then suddenly—
They both stopped. Again. Standing close. Too close.
The earlier almost-kiss still lingered heavily between them like something unfinished neither quite knew how to approach now.
So’lek’s hand brushed hers.
(Y/n)’s heart immediately forgot how to function properly.
What did people even do after almost kissing someone?
Her brain supplied absolutely nothing useful. Embrace? Hold hands again? Pretend nothing happened?
What do I do with my hands? Very suddenly her fingers became the most fascinating things in existence. She stared at them briefly in complete betrayal.
Meanwhile So’lek was having absolutely no easier time. Because now that the immediate threat was gone all his attention returned fully toward her again. Toward how close she stood. Toward the lingering warmth still sitting painfully inside his chest from earlier.
Toward the fact he still wanted very badly to kiss her.
He exhaled slowly steadying himself before speaking again. “Come.”
(Y/n) looked back up immediately.
“How about you take the afternoon off.”
She blinked in surprise. “The afternoon off? But there are hungry kinglor to feed.”
“There will still be hungry Kinglor tomorrow,” he pointed out.
(Y/n) hesitated automatically. Responsibility immediately trying reclaim space inside her thoughts. “Well… I do still have several nectar containers back at the sanctuary already prepared…”
So’lek noticed the exact moment she almost tried talking herself back into work.
His expression shifted slightly firmer. “Good. Let me take you somewhere.”
(Y/n)’s stomach fluttered helplessly. Take her somewhere. The wording alone felt dangerously intimate coming from him.
“Where are we going?” she asked softly.
For the first time all day something almost peaceful settled through So’lek’s expression. “To enjoy a peaceful afternoon.”
The answer startled warmth straight into her chest.
Because perhaps more than anything else— The thought of So’lek wanting peace with her felt more intimate than any kiss ever could have.
So’lek led her deeper through the forest until the sounds of dying flames from a finished fight had long faded behind them, replaced instead by the gentle rushing of water over smooth stones.
The stream was small. Peaceful. Crystal clear water shimmered beneath the glow of hanging plants while soft moss covered the surrounding stones and roots.
It was beautiful. Quiet. Hidden from prying eyes.
So’lek stepped carefully down toward the bank before glancing back toward her. He guided her gently to sit beside him near the edge of the stream and for a while neither spoke.
The silence between them no longer felt awkward. Just full. Heavy with all the things neither quite knew how to say yet and weights in their chest they didn’t know how to voice.
The water flowed softly nearby while tiny glowing insects drifted lazily through the air around them.
(Y/n) glanced sideways toward him eventually.
Even resting beside the stream he still looked alert beneath the calm exterior. Strong shoulders. Steady eyes. Hands worn rough from years of survival and war.
And yet those same hands had touched her face with such unbearable gentleness earlier she still felt warm remembering it.
“What are we doing here, So’lek?”
He looked toward the stream quietly for a long moment before answering. “Resting.”
(Y/n) smiled faintly.
“You are not known for relaxing.”
“Neither are you.”
She laughed softly beneath her breath. “To think…”
She looked down at their hands resting close together between them. “…a few weeks ago you used to glower at me from a distance.”
So’lek’s mouth twitched faintly. “You were recklessly foolish.”
(Y/n) laughed softly again before her expression slowly gentled afterward.
“Now you’re—"
The words caught briefly in her throat. Because what was he now?
Protective. Gentle. Always nearby. Looking at her like she mattered. Like she was something precious.
Her chest tightened softly. “Please, So’lek…”
He turned fully toward her now.
And suddenly she felt terrifyingly exposed beneath the steadiness of his gaze.
“What you are doing to my heart…”
Her voice nearly failed her there. “If I am imagining things…”
She swallowed softly. “I need you to stop it now.”
The vulnerability in those words hit So’lek harder than any weapon ever had.
Because beneath all her warmth and kindness— She was afraid.
Afraid this existed only inside her heart.
Afraid she had misunderstood him.
And Eywa— The thought of her believing that hurt.
So’lek stared at her quietly for several long seconds while something inside him finally gave way.
Because he could no longer pretend this was nothing. Not after the way his chest tightened every time she smiled. Not after the unbearable relief every time she was safe. Not after nearly kissing her beneath the trees because he wanted her so badly it frightened him.
He slowly reached toward her again. Large fingers gently finding hers. “You are not imagining things.”
(Y/n)’s breath caught instantly.
His voice remained low. Roughened by emotion he rarely allowed himself to show. “I tried to stop this.”
The honesty in the confession stunned her silent. “I told myself you were a dreamwalker.”
Pain flickered briefly across his face. “That I should keep distance.”
His thumb brushed softly across her hand. “But every time I did…”
His gaze lifted fully to hers again. “…I only found myself returning to you.”
(Y/n)’s heart felt dangerously close to breaking open completely.
And So’lek looked almost angry at himself for feeling it so deeply.
Meanwhile she looked at him like he had just placed the stars themselves into her hands.
“You make me feel peaceful,” he admitted quietly.
“And that terrified me…” The words sounded almost unfamiliar leaving him.
(Y/n)’s eyes immediately softened with so much warmth it nearly undid him entirely. Her chest ached hearing that.
(Y/n) shifted closer beside him until their shoulders brushed. “You do not have to be afraid of me.”
So’lek closed his eyes briefly at the softness in her voice. No. That was the problem.
He was not afraid of her. He was afraid of how completely he was beginning to love her.
So’lek’s voice came low and gentle. “That is not what I fear.”
(Y/n)’s breath caught quietly in her throat.
Because the look in his eyes now— There was no distance left in it. No coldness. No walls. Only raw aching honesty.
They leaned closer toward one another almost unconsciously. Slowly. Carefully.
Like both of them feared moving too fast would somehow shatter the fragile beautiful thing unfolding between them.
(Y/n) could feel the warmth of his breath now. Could see every tiny shift in his expression.
The way So’lek looked at her made her feel devastatingly cherished.
His hand remained wrapped around hers while the other gently rested against her cheek again, thumb brushing softly against her skin as though he could not stop touching her now that he had finally allowed himself this closeness.
“I cannot ignore my heart, (Y/n).”
The confession sounded almost painful leaving him.
“I have tried.” Eywa, he had tried. Tried drawing lines. Tried reminding himself what she was. Tried forcing distance between them whenever the warmth in his chest grew too dangerous.
But every attempt failed the moment she smiled at him. Or looked at him with concern. It made something ancient and lonely inside him ache.
His forehead nearly brushed hers now. “It wins over my thoughts.”
(Y/n)’s eyes burned suddenly with emotion hearing that. Because So’lek was not careless with words.
Her fingers tightened softly around his hand while her free hand slowly rose to rest against his chest.
The realization nearly made her melt entirely.
“You have any idea,” she whispered shakily, “how relieved I am to hear you say that?”
Something in So’lek’s chest tightened painfully hearing the emotion in her voice.
Because she sounded relieved.Like she too had been fighting this alone for far too long.
His eyes flicked briefly toward her lips again.
This time neither of them looked away.
The space between them disappeared slowly. Naturally. Like gravity itself pulling them together.
(Y/n)’s heart raced so hard she thought she might genuinely pass out while So’lek leaned closer with terrifying carefulness, like he still could not quite believe he was allowing himself this.
His lips brushed hers.
And the second it happened every thought inside So’lek shattered completely.
Because nothing could have prepared him for the warmth of her mouth against his. For the way she melted closer instantly. For the quiet sound she made against his lips that nearly destroyed what little restraint remained inside him.
His hand tightened gently against her cheek while he kissed her again properly this time, deeper and full of every emotion he had been trying desperately to suppress for weeks now. Wanting. Relief. Affection. Need.
(Y/n)’s fingers curled tighter against his metal vest as warmth flooded through her so intensely it almost hurt.
So’lek pulled back only slightly afterward resting his forehead against hers while both of them struggled to remember how breathing worked.
The forest around them seemed impossibly quiet now. Like even Pandora itself had gone still for this moment.
And So’lek realized with terrifying clarity—He was already far too gone to ever pull away from her now.
(Y/n) moved closer to him without hesitation now, like whatever final fear had existed between them had finally broken apart beneath the weight of everything they felt.
He looked at peace. Not guarded. Not distant. Just… hers.
His arms slowly drew her closer against him like instinct had finally overpowered restraint. “Your warmth…”
His voice came rough and quiet against her lips. “Your kindness…”
His forehead rested briefly against hers while his thumb brushed gently along her cheek. “It broke through every thought I had of you.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened painfully hearing the honesty in his voice.
“You are not your kind,” he admitted softly.
The words sounded almost like confession. “You are gentle.”
His gaze moved slowly across her face like he still could not fully believe she was real. “Warm as the sun.”
(Y/n)’s breath caught softly.
And So’lek—
Strong terrifying So’lek—looked almost undone by the way she gazed back at him with such open affection.
“I was cold to you,” he murmured. A faint almost bitter amusement crossed his face briefly. “To try and fight how desperately I needed your warmth, (Y/n).”
Her heart shattered beautifully for him. Because suddenly every glare. Every frustrated argument. Every lingering stare from the edge of clearings—
It all made sense now.
He had been fighting this from the beginning. Fighting her. Fighting himself. Fighting the terrifying comfort she brought into his lonely world.
But now—
Now his walls were finally cracking apart completely beneath her hands.
“So’lek…” Her voice trembled softly with emotion and affection so deep she no longer knew how to contain it.
He kissed her again before she could say more.
This time with less hesitation. Less restraint.
His hand slid into her hair while he pulled her closer against him, kissing her like a starving man finally allowing himself something he had denied for far too long.
(Y/n) melted against him immediately. One of her hands instinctively caught against the dog tags hanging across the front of his metal vest, fingers curling gently around them while warmth flooded every part of her.
So’lek felt the touch and something deep inside his chest ached painfully. Because she held even the harsh broken parts of him gently.
He rested his forehead against hers again afterward breathing unevenly now while his arms remained wrapped firmly around her.
“I am done trying to fight my own thoughts.”
No more distance. No more pretending. No more convincing himself she was merely a dreamwalker he should avoid.
He had already lost that battle completely.
“Can we really be together?” The question came quietly from (Y/n) as she remained wrapped against him beside the glowing stream, her fingers still loosely curled around the dog tags resting against his chest.
So’lek looked down at her for a long moment, his hands resting securely at her waist while the forest glowed softly around them.
He would be lying if he said the thought did not frighten him still. A warrior of the People. A dreamwalker from the stars.
Nothing about this was simple.
Nothing about it should work.
But then again— Nothing about the way she made him feel had ever followed reason.
“I want to try, (Y/n).”
He wanted her. Enough to try despite every fear clawing inside him.
(Y/n)’s eyes softened so much it almost physically hurt him to look at.
“Good,” she breathed softly.
Then suddenly she groaned dramatically and dropped her forehead lightly against his chest. “Because I cannot handle the awkwardness anymore.”
So’lek blinked.
“My heart will explode.”
A startled bark of laughter escaped him before he could stop it.
(Y/n) loved that sound instantly. She looked back up at him smiling helplessly and before he could say another word she kissed him again.
So’lek’s laughter faded immediately into something softer as he kissed her back without hesitation this time, arms pulling her closer against him while the stream rushed quietly nearby.
“So…” (Y/n)’s fingers toyed lightly with the dog tags resting against his chest while she looked up at him with that soft teasing warmth returning slowly to her expression. “Was it the clothes?”
So’lek blinked once. “The clothes?”
“You know,” she gestured vaguely toward herself. “The Aranahe makeover.”
A grin tugged at her lips. “Because if those who shall not be named find out this somehow pushed you over the edge…”
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. “…I will never hear the end of it.”
So’lek understood immediately.
Tamtey.
Etuwa.
Nefika.
The trio currently conspiring against them somewhere back in Hometree.
A quiet chuckle escaped him at the thought. Low and warm.
(Y/n)’s heart fluttered stupidly again hearing it.
“No,” he said softly.
“Not the clothes.”
Though Eywa help him—They certainly had not helped his self control.
His hand brushed lightly against the woven fabric at her waist almost unconsciously while his gaze moved over her again.
Not because the clothing itself mattered. But because of what it had done to him.
What it had made him realize.
(Y/n) tilted her head slightly. “Then what?”
So’lek grew quiet for a moment. Because he wanted her to understand this properly.
“When I saw you walk from Hometree…” He exhaled quietly trying to untangle feelings he had spent weeks suppressing. “It was not the clothing itself.”
His fingers gently brushed a bead woven into her hair.
(Y/n)’s breath caught softly.
“You looked…” He paused briefly. Not because he lacked words. Because he had too many. Beautiful. Radiant. Like sunlight through the forest. Like she belonged beside Pandora instead of apart from it.
His chest tightened. “You looked happy.”
The confession came softer now. “And seeing you accepted…”
His eyes remained fixed on hers.
He shook his head faintly. “I realized how wrong I had been trying to separate you from this world.”
(Y/n)’s eyes immediately softened painfully hearing that. “You belong far more here than many sky people ever will.”
Emotion tightened quietly in her throat. “So’lek…”
“You care for Pandora more gently than most born upon it.”
His thumb brushed softly against her cheek again. “And when I saw you dressed amongst the People…”
A faint almost helpless warmth crossed his face. “…I realized the thought of losing you had become unbearable to me.”
(Y/n)’s heart felt dangerously close to melting completely. Because every word from him sounded earned. Hard fought.
She smiled softly afterward resting her forehead lightly against his chest again. “Well…” Her voice came quieter now. “I am very glad the Aranahe bullied me into changing clothes then.”
So’lek huffed another quiet laugh and wrapped his arms more securely.
Neither of them tried fighting what this had become anymore.
“But are you sure I belong, So’lek?”
The question came so quietly it almost disappeared beneath the sound of the stream.
And immediately— He understood this fear ran far deeper than him. Far deeper than whether the Aranahe accepted her.
This was the wound she carried constantly beneath everything else.
The fear that no matter how much she loved Pandora—
No matter how much she gave to it— She would always remain separate. An outsider pretending at belonging.
(Y/n)’s fingers curled lightly against the front of his vest while her eyes searched his carefully. “I was not born on Pandora.”
Her voice softened further. “This is not my real body.”
Something painful twisted through So’lek’s chest hearing the old hurt behind those words.
Because once— He would have agreed. Once he had seen her as something unnatural. A false thing wearing sacred skin. A demon in borrowed flesh.
And Eywa— The thought of seeing her that way now felt unbearable.
Before she could retreat further into those fears he leaned down and kissed her. Not to silence her. To answer her.
(Y/n)’s breath caught softly against his lips and when he finally pulled back his forehead rested gently against hers once more.
“I do not see you as a demon any longer.”
His thumb brushed gently along her cheek while his gaze remained fixed on hers. “I no longer see stolen skin.”
His voice roughened slightly with emotion. “I no longer see an alien pretending to belong.”
Because none of those things were what defined her to him anymore. He saw the woman who stayed awake for days saving lives—stayed awake for days saving his life. The woman whose warmth thawed something cold and lonely inside him that he thought had died years ago.
“I see you, (Y/n).”
Her heart stuttered painfully hard at those words. He saw her. Not the avatar. Not the dreamwalker. Not the sky person.
Her.
Emotion burned behind her eyes immediately and she hated how vulnerable that made her feel.
“Do you?” she whispered shakily. “I am not Na’vi.”
“That is not what matters.”
The answer came without hesitation.
So’lek’s hand gently guided her closer against him again. “What matters is your heart.”
(Y/n)’s breath trembled softly.
“You care for this world more deeply than many born beneath Eywa ever will.”
He looked at her like the truth of that sat carved into his bones now.
His chest tightened faintly. “And you make this harsh world feel gentle again simply by existing within it.”
(Y/n) looked like she might cry at that. Not from sadness. From being seen so completely it hurt.
So’lek brushed his nose softly against hers.
“Pandora may not have birthed you,” he murmured quietly.
“But Eywa still guided you here.”
And somehow— Hearing him say it finally made part of her believe it too.
“Eywa guided you to me.”
So’lek’s voice came barely above a whisper now while the glowing stream rushed softly beside them. His hand remained against her cheek while his forehead rested gently against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet warmth between them. “You saved my life.”
The memory still lived sharply inside him even now. Pain. Blood loss. Fever.
The fading edges of consciousness while his ikran’s death echoed like grief through his soul.
And then—Her.
Small exhausted hands desperately trying to hold him together while infection consumed his body.
He remembered her voice. Steady despite exhaustion. Gentle even while terrified he would die beneath her care.
“She brought me to your kind and gentle hands.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened painfully hearing the emotion in his voice.
“I loved you long before I understood it,” he admitted quietly.
The words nearly stole the breath from her lungs entirely.
His eyes closed briefly.
“If not for my path of vengeance…” Pain flickered faintly across his face. “If not for war and the hatred I carried…”
His thumb brushed softly against her skin. “I would have returned searching for your kindness long ago.”
(Y/n)’s heart physically hurt hearing that. Because she remembered watching him disappear after recovering. Remembered quietly wondering for years afterward whether he survived. Whether he still lived somewhere out there beyond the forests.
Their paths had crossed again somehow despite everything.
And now he stood here holding her like losing her would break him.
“But we crossed paths again,” So’lek murmured softly.
“And your kindness…” His gaze lifted fully to hers again. “…is far brighter than my hatred.”
Emotion tightened harshly in his throat. “You outshine it all.”
(Y/n)’s eyes burned immediately. Because no one had ever spoken about her like this before.
Her fingers lifted slowly brushing against the rough line of his jaw while she stared at him with so much affection it nearly undid him entirely.
“You know what I noticed about you first?”
So’lek’s ears flicked slightly.
“That you watched everything.” A faint smile touched her lips. “You pretend to be cold and distant but you are always paying attention.”
She laughed softly beneath her breath. “You stayed nearby my sanctuary even when we argued.”
“You noticed.”
“You are not subtle, So’lek.”
That earned the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth.
(Y/n)’s expression softened further afterward. “You brought me food when I was too exhausted to care for myself.”
Her hand rested gently over his.
Emotion thickened quietly in her voice now. “You were always just there.”
“You listened when Alma made me doubt myself.”
“You make me feel less doubt.”
So’lek’s chest tightened.
(Y/n)’s eyes lowered briefly.
“I have spent so much of my life pursuing a way to keep others alive…”
Her voice trembled softly. “And no one ever really looked after me.”
So’lek’s heart physically ached hearing that.
Then her gaze lifted back toward him again filled with warmth so deep it nearly shattered him. “But you did.”
A tear slipped free down her cheek though she smiled through it. “You made me feel wanted.”
Her voice broke softly. “And I think somewhere along the way I fell completely in love with you because no one has ever done something so thoughtful for me before.”
So’lek closed his eyes briefly overwhelmed by the raw honesty in her voice. “So say it back, (Y/n).”
Her breath caught. “What?”
His forehead pressed lightly against hers again. “You heard me.”
A faint warmth touched his expression.
“Can I?” she whispered shakily.
“Yes.”
His voice dropped lower. “I want to hear you say it.”
(Y/n)’s heart raced so violently she thought it might burst.
She did not hold the words back. Her hands gently framed his face while she smiled through tears and overwhelming warmth. “I see you, So’lek.”
And Eywa—
The way his eyes softened hearing those words told her no one had ever truly said them to him before either.
“What happened after you left?”
(Y/n)’s voice softened gently while they remained together beside the stream, her fingers absentmindedly tracing across the worn metal of the dog tags resting against his chest.
“I wondered for years.”
So’lek’s gaze lowered slightly.
“You mentioned hatred before.” Her thumb brushed softly against the back of his hand. “Vengeance.”
The word sat heavy between them. “What pains you so deeply?”
She looked at him with quiet concern now.
“I have noticed it weighing on you ever since we met again.”
So’lek fell silent for several long moments afterward while the forest moved softly around them.
He rarely spoke about this. Rarely allowed himself to think too deeply on the grief beneath the rage because if he did—
It threatened swallowing him whole again.
But this was (Y/n).
“As soon as I was on my feet again…” His voice roughened slightly. “I sought out my clan.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened immediately hearing the shift in his tone.
But his eyes remained fixed somewhere distant now. Haunted by memory. “They had been wiped out.”
The words came flat. “By the sky people.”
Pain flickered sharply across his face despite the calmness he tried maintaining.
(Y/n)’s heart physically hurt hearing it. “So’lek…”
“That burning vengeance still lingers, (Y/n).”
There was no hiding it now. No pretending. “It never truly left me.”
His fingers flexed slightly against hers. “I still hunt anyone connected to the massacre of my clan.”
(Y/n) looked at him with so much sorrow and understanding it almost hurt him to meet her gaze. Because she did not recoil from that darkness in him. Did not fear it.
Instead her hand gently lifted to his face once more like she wished she could somehow ease years of grief from his shoulders.
“I always wondered why you were so cold to me when we met again.”
A faint sad smile touched her lips. “So guarded.”
So’lek huffed quietly beneath his breath. “It did not last long.”
That finally earned the softest laugh from her. “No,” she agreed warmly. “It did not.”
Her eyes softened teasingly afterward. “I suppose Pandora’s great terrifying oaf simply needed time to thaw.”
So’lek barked another quiet laugh at that.
“Yes,” he admitted. “It took some time.”
Then more quietly—“But you are not them.”
The certainty in his voice made her chest tighten softly again. He saw her.
(Y/n)’s expression gentled. “Even if I am human?”
So’lek’s gaze drifted slowly over her face. Affection. Warmth. Something devastatingly tender now. “Even if you are human.”
“And when you are half my size.”
(Y/n) gasped softly in mock offense. “I am not that small.”
“You are very small.”
“I am a perfectly reasonable size for a human.”
So’lek’s arms tightened around her slightly. “You fit beneath my chin.”
“That sounds like a you problem.”
His chest rumbled softly with another laugh while she smiled helplessly.
And somewhere between grief and warmth and old wounds finally spoken aloud— The loneliness both of them carried for so long began easing just a little more.
“You are a walking contradiction.” So’lek said it with quiet disbelief beneath the warmth in his voice while his fingers traced slowly along hers beside the stream.
(Y/n) blinked up at him. “A contradiction?”
“Yes.”
There was almost fond exasperation in his expression now.
“You should not make sense to me.”
That made her smile faintly. “So poetic.”
“I am serious.”
His gaze stayed fixed on her while he spoke. “You are sky people…”
His jaw tightened slightly at the old instinctive thought before softening again looking at her. “But you grieve Pandora’s suffering more deeply than many born to it.”
“You wear a false body…” His hand gently brushed against her waist where the woven Aranahe fabrics rested. “But everything about your heart feels real.”
“You are gentle enough to cry burying dying creatures…”
Warmth crossed his face faintly.
“…yet stubborn enough to argue with me while I’m bleeding from gunshot wounds.”
(Y/n) snorted softly.
“You also attempt medicine on yourself with experimental compounds.”
“That also happened one time.”
“According to you, you poisoned yourself.”
“In the name of science and good drinks.”
So’lek stared at her flatly.
She looked away immediately trying not to laugh.
He shook his head faintly though affection remained written all across his face now.
“You spend your days healing life with soft hands and kind words…”
His thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles. “…yet you willingly stand amidst battlefields covered in blood trying to save life.”
(Y/n)’s chest tightened quietly hearing the emotion in his voice.
“You are human.” His eyes searched hers carefully now. “But you are the gentlest soul I have ever known.”
The stream rushed softly around them while So’lek exhaled slowly. “And for weeks my thoughts fought themselves because of it.”
(Y/n)’s expression softened immediately.
He had struggled so deeply with this. With her.
“I would watch you from the trees and remind myself you were a dreamwalker.”
A faint bitter amusement touched his mouth. “Then I would see you feeding orphaned creatures from your hands and suddenly hatred no longer made sense beside you.”
He looked down briefly. “I told myself you were not one of the People.”
Then quieter— “But every act of yours reflected more honor than many warriors I have known.”
(Y/n)’s throat tightened softly.
“So I became angry at myself instead. “Because every moment beside you made the lines blur further.”
He laughed softly beneath his breath. “You were exhausting.”
“You exhaust me!.” That made her laugh properly this time.
So’lek’s gaze softened immediately at the sound. “I would decide to keep distance from you…”
His hand gently lifted to brush loose strands of hair behind her ear. “…then find myself standing outside your sanctuary again hours later.”
(Y/n)’s chest fluttered helplessly.
“You wore me down.”
The confession came almost helplessly now.
“Every kindness.”
“Every smile.”
“Every act of compassion.”
His forehead rested lightly against hers again. “I could no longer ignore my heart.”
(Y/n)’s eyes burned softly with emotion hearing it.
Because beneath all his strength and guardedness—So’lek loved with terrifying sincerity.
Once he allowed himself to.
Her fingers curled gently against his jaw while she smiled shakily. “Well.”
Her voice softened warmly. “Good.”
That earned another quiet laugh from him before he kissed her once more beside the glowing stream while Pandora hummed softly around them like the world itself had finally exhaled.
“Because I genuinely do not know what I would have done if this was never addressed,” (Y/n) admitted softly against his lips, laughing shakily through the overwhelming warmth still flooding her chest.
“My heart may actually have combusted.”
So’lek huffed another quiet laugh at that, the sound rumbling warmly beneath his chest while his forehead rested against hers. “You are foolish.”
“I have spent weeks being stared at by a giant brooding warrior who kept showing up everywhere I was.”
Her hands lifted slightly in disbelief.
“You glowered at me.”
“I did.”
“You hovered.”
“You can be reckless with your safety.”
“You fixed my shelters.”
“You ask.”
“You literally raided the RDA because Nalin said I was not eating properly.”
“You were surviving off sludge and were not eating.”
“And through all of this,” she continued, “you somehow expected me not to fall in love with you?”
His heart stuttered faintly hearing her say it so openly now. Love.
(Y/n) smiled helplessly at the way his gaze softened instantly every time she said those words. “You would stand outside my sanctuary pretending you just happened to be nearby.”
“I was checking the perimeter.”
“You were lurking.”
“That is different.”
“It is absolutely not different.”
A quiet laugh escaped him again and Eywa she adored that sound more every single time she heard it.
Because she knew how rare it was. How hard won.
(Y/n) brushed her thumb softly along the line of his jaw.
“I was losing my mind, So’lek.” Her smile gentled into something softer afterward.
“Every time you looked at me like that…”
His arms instinctively tightened around her slightly.
“…I kept hoping.” The vulnerability in her voice tugged painfully at his chest.
“Hoping what?”
“That maybe you felt this too.”
He hated the thought of her doubting herself because of his fear. “I am sorry.”
The apology came quiet and genuine.
(Y/n) immediately shook her head. “No.” Her hand cupped his face gently.
(Y/n)’s smile slowly returned afterward brighter now.
“But still.” Her eyes narrowed teasingly. “If we had kept dancing around this much longer I was going to physically perish.”
“You would not perish.”
“You underestimate my inner monologue.”
So’lek chuckled softly again before leaning down and pressing another slow kiss to her forehead.

❁ Pandoran Experiment ❁
❁ Pairing: So'lek x Avatar-driver!reader ❁ Trope: Childhood friends to lovers ❁ Summary: The RDA has always been loose with their morals. Has always chosen the path that suits them, no matter who it affects. So when a child is ‘commandeered’, adopted in the eyes of the public, and sent to live a life on an alien world, no one should be surprised. No one should question their motives, question their ethics. It was all for the ‘betterment of humanity’ afterall. Seeing how an avatar would fair if given to a young subject, allowed to grow alongside its driver. This was an advancement for science.. right? And so begins the great Pandoran experiment. ❁ Inspired by this post
