I guess by now I should know enough about loss to realize that you never really stop missing someone - you just learn to live around the huge gaping hole of their absence.

Winter had always been Amos’ favorite season. The castle had always seemed warm and the snow was just simply put beautiful. But something this year had changed the season for him. Maybe it was that they had all been forced to stay during the break or that everyone was grieving in their own ways, either way Winter no longer seemed as good as it had before. He was sure Mary was feeling that way about it even more than he was. “Certainly warmer,” he gave a small smile, leaving the whiskey where it was on the table, slowly standing. He held out his hand for Mary, realizing too late she might not want to take it, but he left it in front of her anyway. “Plus its always nice to visit with the house elves.”
Staring up at his hand with a slighthesitation, Mary fought the urge to just grab it and hold on. To allow thatsmall comfort, the small semblance of normality that would allow her to feel likemaybe things could be okay, even if only for a few moments. But it was only ahand, and it would be a false sense of security – which would do more harm thangood in the long run. So she temporarily placed her hand in his to hoistherself up before promptly drawing back. So this was why people generallyavoided befriending their ex’s. “Yeah, I haven’t…really seen them since beforeChristmas.” Normally late night visits would include popping into the kitchens, but Mary hadn’t felt much like eating lately. “I suppose I haven’t seen a lotof people since before then, but that’s…normal, I guess. Around this time. Butthen class will start and I won’t have much of a choice. Can’t say I’m looking forward to that.”

“Never have I ever kissed Mary MacDonald. Care to change that?”
❝I can see that from how you’re sat all alone, almost oblivious to the world around you. I’d ask how you have been, but I’m willing to bet it’s about as well as I’ve been.❞
“Yeah, well - can’t screw things up if I’m alone, right? Plus I can only take the looks of pity for so long. Which I’m sure you understand."
Amos let out a light laugh as Mary gave a slight laugh as well. Both sounds were ones he hadn’t heard in what felt like years, most certainly a month though. He missed their laughs. He missed laughing with her. So as his head remained lightly against hers he soaked it all in telling himself he needed to remember this moment because so many of their moments before he hadn’t taken note of. He wondered if she was taking note of this moment, knowing Mary she was. “Yea good idea, the castle is fairly chilly, coats are a necessity these days,” He allowed a smile to remain on his face. “How would you feel about going down to the kitchens for a cup of tea?”
“Yeah, it’s...definitely been cold.” Before, she would have loved it. Winter, the snow, drinking hot chocolate, bundling up with scarves and mittens - her dad had loved it to. They used to make snowmen together and build forts, especially when she was a child. Her parents even tried taking her skiing last year, except that had gone horribly and ended with a few bruises. But god, was it ever fun. And now her father would never see the snow again and she no longer looked at it with a smile. Clearing her throat slightly she brought her head back up. “Tea, yeah - tea would be nice. Much better than alcohol.”

His eyes widened as the objects he had been levitating stilled in their movements. All he wanted to do was to make her feel better–hell, maybe even make her forget for a day. He knew he couldn’t bring her father back, or help her fix any other problems she might be dealing with, but this was how they used to cope with failed tests and bad days. It was like he had lost a part of his friend when all hell broke lose during the holidays. His breath caught in his throat. “I–” He began, lowering the objects to the ground. “I’m sorry, Mare-bear. I was just–I was trying to help, I–”
Fucking bloody hell, Mary. Of all people, she had managed to upset Fabian, a feat which was nearly impossible. Fantastic, you’re now a wonderful person. As much as she wanted to stay under the blankets until he went away and continue ignoring everything and anyone, she slowly lowered it down to reveal from the neck up. “Sorry,” she muttered, not particularly keen on apologies as of late. ‘I’m just...it’s not been a good day, Fabian.” Well, it’s been a down-right shitty year so far, but that wasn’t his problem to hear or take on.
