i’m not scared of the dark
“My soul and yours are the same, You appear in me, I in you, We hide in each other.”
— Rumi (via wordsnquotes)
status : closed to @mundxngus
location : mary’s flat / diagon alley
timestamp : june 7, 1979 / 3:16 am
the stench that laced through the air in mary’s apartment was unmatchable, another late night trying to concoct much of anything. counter tops are covered with ingredients, new and old, as cauldrons bubble around her. focus once unwavering, she cannot help but hear the echoing footfalls up the rickety stairway towards her door. had she been expecting him ? of course. but it wasn’t even half three, and she’d wondered exactly how easy the task had been if he’d already finished. powdered palms wipe stray hairs away from her face as she makes her way towards the threshold, opening it to the familiar deviant face of one mundungus fletcher.
“ you’re early. “ she side steps, allowing the man to enter before continuing. curiosity getting the best of her, she feigns any real excitement but the inside of her cannot help but feel erratic. “ and ya smell like shite.“ to be expected , a light scoff escapes hoarse throat. mary and mundungus had an understanding, a kinship that came with their shared –– interests. “ here’s to hopin’ ya got good news?”
PREWETT , gideon
his arm burns from the impact as he fights to hide his wince. so much power bubbled under mary macdonald’s surface. and perhaps something darker… but gideon didn’t like to dwell on that, on the shadows in their lives, the ones curling in her eyes. shaking off the thoughts, his smile widens. “it’s one of my many charms, in fact. and assets. i plan to irritate our masked pals to death.” his shoulder twitches, body tilting forward, ready to sling his arm around the woman’s own shoulders before he pauses. thinks better of the gesture, recognizing he pushed it, learning his friend’s limits, her needs, more and more every day. instead he spins in a circle several times in a effort to check the surroundings and release the mounting kinetic energy. “what was that?” roving gaze settles again on her face. “oh hmm, lost track of time enchanting toy dragons for the boys. ‘m positive molly will adore how they breathe real fire.” his smile turns wicked with mischief. “she says you should stop by, y’know.” a twisting of the truth. “for one of her table groaning dinners. the more the merrier-” is what leaves his lips while when was the last time you’ve eaten echoes in his mind.
“ irritate them to death ? might as well grab me a casket alongside with ‘em then. “ it’s said in jest, and yet the painful reality is all too overpowering. they were children who signed up for war, who’d accepted the inevitability of death if only to leave the world a better place than it was now. however, mary was beginning to become uncertain if the world had ever been good, had it ever been kind and just ? or was the only thing she’d ever known cruelty and punishment for things she couldn’t control ? there’s an inkling in mary that wants to tell gideon everything, a small part of her that is begging the girl to simply say it out loud. yet, she stops herself if only to conceal a wicked sense of self she needn’t expose to the man who’d only wished to see the good. he’d never given up on her, never steered her wrong nor led her astray. gideon prewett was the closest thing mary had to family these days, and she’d be damned if she ruined it by allowing him to figure out what it was she’d been doing in the dark. her eyes light up at the mention of the children , the red headed devils with whom mary had found so enchanting . she’d never been particularly keen of kids, yet any offspring of the prewett family to her was all too good to not want to know, to not need to know. mentions of molly cause a slight smile to crawl up on her features, a picturesque family she’d always remain on the outskirts of. “ ––– that so ? “ he’s peaked her interest, and yet there’s a part of her that wonders how much is molly and how much is simply worry. “ ya might be able to convince me.” shoulder bumping against him, as lighthearted as she can bring herself to be, the gesture comes from the only good place left in her hollowed out heart. “y’know for a prat , you’re half decent.” it’s her own way of saying thank you . “ i mean you’d be a lot better in my books if ya made me a fire breathing dragon but ––– “
GREENGRASS , aurelia
“That’s … comforting,” she replied, turning around to face the stranger. Knockturn alley had been so dark, they really ought to invest in some street lights. Then again, Aurelia hadn’t been too keen on knowing what lay hidden within its crevices. “It’s easy to get lost here,” the curse breaker replied, glancing around their surroundings one more time. Still, she couldn’t quite let it go – her parents would visit frequently, but for WHAT? Did these shady wizards know about curses? Could they help alleviate hers? “Something like that. I was called here for work purposes, I - work for the Ministry,” Aurelia replied, unsure of whether or not she should give FULL details. “But it’s late and I’m paranoid, given all the news that’s been flying around.”
“ the ministry. . . “ her voice falters, it’s a joke of an establishment in her mind, that much was certain. muggleborns had seen it first hand, the cruelty that came with not belonging. “ well, ‘m sure if you’re from the ministry, nothin’ can touch you. “ perhaps it was presumptuous of her, but the bitterness that seeps through her tongue and unto her words is hardly avoidable. they’d done terrible things, but hadn’t she as well ? everyone was capable of turning into a monster, some were just more obvious than others. “ ––– what department did ya say ya worked for again ? “
CROUCH , barty
this wasn’t an unusual occurrence for witches and wizards to visit the shop in search of rare artifacts or ingredients for potions they couldn’t find from anywhere else. but to see her meant something different to him. he had looked up to her during there time at hogwarts, not that he would ever admit it. now he could still share the same kinship with her over mixing new potions for others. “no?” an eyebrow raised, even more curious now about would the young woman could be concocting. barty had been glad mary had paid him a visit, but even so this must have been something out of diagon alley’s league. more so now with her being secretive about it.
“am i supposed to have blind faith you aren’t getting into too much trouble?” he wouldn’t stop her if she happened to be doing just that, searching for the reasoning of why. a light chuckle passed his lips as the requested was made. “no wonder you didn’t go searching in diagon alley. i am intrigued though, with you searching for something as unusual as unicorn blood.” barty stood up straighter, taking out his wand and summoning a small vial. “are you sure you can’t give me a small hint on what you’re working on?”
he could relate, that’s truly what it came down to. mary, by no means, knew how to surround herself with the right people. yet, in the times that she’d spent in the dungeon, barty had not been far behind. he was gifted, she would’ve been blind not to see it. “ blind faith ––– “ she presses a finger to her chin as if debating, smirk lingering as her words are filled with nothing but a teasing undertone. “ i ‘spose that’s what you could call it. although , i wouldn’t hold your breath, crouch. trouble finds me. “
her shoulders roll into a light shrug , hoping that there was some truth to her words. her eyes managed to light up at the sight of the small vial, another easy find. perhaps she’d come into luck as of late, her clients asking and her delivering almost immediately. “ it’s something new i’ve been attempting ––– i hope to have it fool proof by next week , perhaps if you’re lucky i might just share the recipe with you. you’d surely be able to impress anyone who comes through. “
GREENGRASS , aurelia
Status: OPEN Location: KNOCKTURN ALLEY
Her parents had never let her explore this alley as a child, insisting that she remain in the populated areas of Diagon Alley. ‘Nothing there for you,’ they had stated, despite visiting the dark alley for their own necessities. It wasn’t until she entered the Ministry that Aurelia Greengrass learned WHY they never allowed her to explore the hidden pathway – dart arts; cursed objects. Part of her felt tempted, wondering if these shady wizards knew anything of blood curses ( like the one laced through her body ). However, she opted to focus on her job instead, not liking the aura of Knockturn… especially after the news of Benjy Fenwick breaking headlines. Or perhaps the former Slytherin was feeling TOO paranoid.
She paused for a second, wondering if she heard something behind her, calling out, “ – hello?”
“ No need to fret, I ain’t gonna bite ya. “ She’d taken a habit to seclusion as of late, and so maybe it was too forward of her to answer. As much as she’d wanted to go unnoticed, she’d failed, slightly cursing the sound of her shoes upon the cobblestone. “ Just –––” A moment of brevity between her words, a hollow beat to come up with something, anything, but the truth. “Got a little lost.” Saccharine lies drip from the girls tongue, as brave as she may be, why was it that Mary had never been brave enough to tell the truth? Speeding up her step slightly, she comes up beside the girl and continues. “The same for you ?”
LESTRANGE , rabastan
they were playing with fire but then it was hardly as if that was anything new for either of them. in fact it was the only time he ever felt alive, felt as if he was more than a ticking time bomb and he knew mary understood. they didn’t have to talk about it to know that they gravitated towards each other out of a similar sort of need. they saw pieces of themselves in each other and merlin in the times they lived in, that was nothing sort of some fucked up miracle. mary didn’t expect anything from him and so he breathed easier around her. of course, he knew eventually he would have to pay for this short stolen moments of relief but he would deal with that the day it happened. “well you can’t exactly pull off red either so i’m sure that didn’t play a part-” he replied teasingly, knowing fully well that she could probably pull of the most terrible of colours. “catch up, macdonald. when did you get so slow?” he goaded her but there was a good natured edge to his words. he punctuated his words by knocking back another shot, already gesturing to the bartender for more. he could feel the tension of the day seeping away. the headline of the day was yet another reminder of one of the many ways he had fucked up and for a brief moment he wondered what mary would think of him if she knew but then he dismissed the thought. he would rather not find out. he propped his elbow on the counter, turning to look at her. “waste my last evening on you?” he repeated, “if only you were so lucky, macdonald,” he countered, winking at her as his lips curved in a grin. “how very altruistic of you. i keep forgetting how goddamn generous you can be.”
did she think it reckless of her to be in his company? perhaps. although it had never stopped her before. with rabastan, mary found a sense of escape in which no one else could provide. everyone else wanted to talk, wanted to know her thoughts and share her pain. rabastan? well, he’d seemingly been happy with simply her company. at his playful jest, she cannot help but extend her arm to let a gentle thwack ( ! ) hit his arm. gaze narrowing in, she rolls her eyes and continues on. drinking numbed whatever pain it was she’d felt inside, it quieted the noise that echoed throughout her head on repeat. she’d been tortured by her own thoughts for far too long, and while it continued, losing herself inside the contents of whatever bottle she’d been polishing off seemed the answer. before he can reach out for one of the newly minted whiskey shots that appeared before them, mary’s arm extends as she swallows it whole. the burning sensation feels familiar, feels safe. “ don’t make it a challenge, rab. “ because she can’t say no, because she’s addicted to destruction. “ lucky? is that what you’d call it? “ she mocks him so, and it’s foolish that he allows her to get away with it. beyond the four walls they’d built around one another when together, the world was crueler than they could ever be, darker than they could ever imagine. tongue sticks out in disgust for a moment, feigning laughter as she rattles on. “ well , i’m here with you aren’t i? call it my charity work for the week. “ mary was never known for her pleasantries, she was never known for her good heart. in fact, it was the exact opposite, her sour tongue and her calloused palms that held nothing but a dark heart. she ignores the pleas of others, ignores the wishes for her to open up, to share what was on her mind, if only to do so with the enemy. but then, if he truly was the enemy, and they were of kindred spirits, split from the same coin ––– what did that make her to herself, to the order, to everyone she loved? she wasn’t daft, she knew who rabastan was when she’d climbed into his company. but, like the bottle of whiskey in which she’s polished time and time again, she became an addict. an ache for her next hit , for the next time she’d be able to feel like herself again. her tongue hits the side of her cheek, pressing words, but liquored soaked lips gets the best of her, as they oft do. nimble digits taking ahold of the small liquor filled glass, swishing it gaze averts rabastan all together. “ then again you’re about the only person i want to be ‘round at the moment.” down goes another, swift gulp and it’s gone. “ but maybe that’s just because you’re a bigger arse hole than i am, and i’ve not been a very good person as of late. no thanks to your shining example.”
MEADOWES , dorcas
while dorcas remained quiet, she knew that around the other young woman, she had always found herself livelier, maybe with a bit of a more positive beat in her step. she couldn’t explain it away, but she felt pride for the other, and it instilled a sense of protectiveness despite the other being more than capable of taking care of herself. arching a brow slightly, a soft chuckle radiated. “of course—i’m always the one catching people and spoiling the fun.” the girl hadn’t been one to let herself let loose much. “you know that isn’t the worst sort of punishment, but it sounds awful.” she paused at the question, her lips pursing slightly at the mere insinuation that she could be up to something at this sort of hour. “me? i was actually just talking with someone…time got away from me, and now it’s late. what can i say? i’m boring.”
“ Oi , come off it. “ it’s a playful jest as elbow comes into contact with the girl, sidestepping in order to match the others pace. “talking?” it’s a lifted brow, vocals itching with curiosity, as mary insinuates anything but talking. she’d never considered herself a bad influence on dorcas, but there had always been an underlying tone that they carried throughout their friendship. dorcas, a brilliant witch ; mary, the brilliant enigma. they were order and chaos, fire and water, fight and flight. “ you sure ‘bout that meadowes? it’s awfully late to just be talkin’ ya know.” arm latches through the others. however hard mary tried, she couldn’t quite distance herself entirely, couldn’t manage to shut off every emotion she’d have around the girls she’d considered family. yes, the secrets were copious amounts, but their bond still managed to remain. however tattered and broken it may have appeared. “ c’mon, you can walk me home and tell me all ‘bout just who it was you were talkin’ to, yeah?” lips curl into a smirk, knowing fully well that her attempt at feigning any secrecy around dorcas would please her. “ and just how you are doing meadowes, you haven’t owled in quite some time. almost thought you forgot ‘bout me.”
there is something bleeding to death inside me.
LUPIN , remus
WHERE: mary’s place WHEN: 1 june 1979 WHO: @marysmacdvnald
Remus liked to grocery shop. He usually went to a muggle market, somewhere no one knew him and he wasn’t likely to run into anyone he knew. It was a sort of meditation for him, a quick escape from whatever was going on so that he could think or get his head on straight. Or, in today’s case, pretend like everything was normal and nothing was as fucked up as he knew it was. There were no were wolf packs in the market, no Death Eaters or Ministry officials. The headlines on the papers were blissfully distant, the chances of the face of someone he loved gracing them was slim to none.
So in order to prolong his time at the shops, he often picked things up for any friends who needed something. And in the absence of that, he did Mary’s shopping so he’d be assured for at least a week that she had real adult food in the house.
He was juggling three bags when he got to her door, using his foot to knock as his hands were otherwise occupied. “Mary, um, I hope your home or I’m going to drop all your groceries and mine in this hallway.”
it was few and far between in terms of visitors who’d made it past the threshold of mary’s flat. she liked the seclusion that came without guests, the solace in which she could stew over her own thoughts in peace. however, it seemed as though others didn’t seem to feel the same way. “ ––– remus?” her voice echoes throughout the kitchen as she lets out a heaving sigh. in no state for company, hands quickly collide with emptied bottles, a momentary lapse in judgement before she reaches for her broom to quicken the process of cleaning. “ just gimme a second ––– “ hands run through matted hair, a night spent too late as the bags beneath her eyes become more and more prominent with each day.
“ i told ya, you shouldn’t be wastin’ your money on me. “ her gaze shoots towards remus’ full hands as she opens the door, shaking her head. the thought of it made her heart fall into her stomach. she’d fallen for so long that she’d forgotten that along the way, it’d seemed, that she’d begun to allow others to fall with her. remus was just the latest of her casualties. how was it that she could have such things done for her, plaster a forced smile upon her face and still not feel a thing ? “ c’mon , i think i got some tea ‘round here somewhere.” she reliefs the boy of some bags before side stepping into her flat, dimmed lighting and the ever present smell of ingredients scattered throughout. “ promise me this is the last time, ya got that kid? “
“The flowers have come, and are adorable, dusky, tortured, passionate like you.”
— Virginia Woolf, in a letter to her lover Vita Sackville-West (via minuty)
LESTRANGE , rodolphus
“macdonald.” most definitely not a surname of note and she was likely not a pureblood, shame. a pretty face was often wasted on poor blood. raising a brow at the status of her night, he allowed a soft chuckle to escape his lips. “should i be questioning your motives? little good happens in these parts in broad daylight, let alone at night and i’m very much a man of the law.” satisfaction strikes him at her recognition of him and he nods, offering her a strong hand to shake. “rodolphus,” he confirms, dropping the formalities. how formal could one be in a dark alley with a stranger? nevertheless, he’s interested and he regrets his night coming to an early close. “i’m a working man, i’m afraid. i’ve had a long day and tomorrow will be another.”
" PERHAPS it isn’t anythin’ good that i’m up to. “ Words slide out into the night to the man with ease, and yet as soon as they dangle in the air, mary regrets her decision. “ i tend to do my best work in the evenin’ , just brewing a thing or two for some of my regulars.” how was it that she could be so open with strangers, she’d wondered. the answer, unfortunately, she’d already known, just chosen not to accept. “ between you and i, the law’s just ‘bout the least of my worries this time of night, wouldn’t ya say? been reading the papers lately –––– rodolphus?” his name sounds foreign on her tongue, but she swallows pride and continues on. “ d’you work at the ministry then? it must be in absolute disarray ––– what with all these rumours.” playing coy had never served her well, so why was it that she’d been attempting it now.
EVANS , lily
Lily bit her lip. She lacked the pessimism that Mary did feel, always found herself feeling more comfortable when she put herself in an optimistic mindset. She trusted the Order. Those people she trusted, endlessly — they were choosing to fight, to not stand idly by, even though some definitely had the choice not to. For people like her and Mary, though? There was no choice but to fight, that she knew, and once things started turning for the worst, they’d be the first ones to fall. But that Order members could betray her? That wasn’t something she could believe. “I know,” she said, though, head nodding. “I know.” They were easiest to blame, stealers of magic, infiltrators of the wizarding world, dirty blooded odd ones out. If the identities of the Order members got out, some politician would be able to spin it into some anti-muggleborn propaganda, that was for sure. “But they won’t betray us, Mare, you know that.” There was some force in her voice, then, as if she was almost angry at the other for daring to think it. “They’re bloody good people, and even if … everything ends up public, they wouldn’t just turn on the cause, or us.” What was the point of fighting now, when you were ready to discard your loyalties once things took a thing for the worse? Lily knew that she herself would fight until there was nothing left in her, until she had taken her last breath and DIED. She wouldn’t stop, not for anyone or anything. Was she naive to hope that the people on her side would do the same? She didn’t know. “Either way, we have to make sure that it doesn’t come to that. I’m serious, we have to propose some kind of break out during the next meeting. Hell, we should even call a meeting. Something needs to be bloody done.”
She’d spoken too much, that much was evident as she studied Lily’s features. Doe eyed and perhaps one of the strongest women that Mary had ever know. Lily was relentless, she had a knack for finding beauty in places that Mary only saw littered in darkness. Perhaps this was why Mary had had a moment of weakness, a moment of skepticism. She wore a suit of armour as if it were a second skin, forgetting to shed it so much that it had become a part of her. Always at arms length, Mary was notorious for thinking too little, for thinking too much. “I’m sorry, Lil.” In a moment of rare affection, she outstretches her hand, palm placed gently upon the others. “Y’know how I –– “ How I’m wired, how I think, how I can’t trust a single soul, she longs to say, but doesn’t. Instead, the corners of her lips curl ever so slightly, gaze never leaving the green hues of Lily’s own. “No matter what happens, I won’t let anything happen to ya, you know that.” To see Lily angry, to see her passionate, only awoke Mary’s own fire breathing dragon within her stomach. A painful reminder that every day was a battle, and they had only just begun the war. “ The next meetin’ , somethings gotta change. We can’t go on risking our lives only to get thrown in bloody prison for it –– “ Did she want justice? Of course. But there was a monster within her that craved, more than anything, revenge. Not upon every man and woman who’d sworn themselves to a man who promised infamy, no. Just one, one who haunted her dreams and if the Order was the fastest way to get to him, so be it. “ Benjy will help us fight again, we’ll see to it. He’s one o’ us. If he goes down, we go down with him. “
BENVOLIO, HIPPOLYTA, MACBETH, >:)))
BENVOLIO: What comes to mind when you think of peace?
PEACE, she’d never known it. since she was a child she’d been fighting urges, fighting others, and even herself. since she was a child, she’d been shunned and cast aside for who she was, for who she’d grow up to be. there was a darkness in her soul, a haunting chill coursing through her bones. she’d always made a better ghost than a girl, some would whisper. chaotic and erratic, there was nothing peaceful about the way mary would watch as the waves crashed into the rocks at the foggy coast. there was nothing peaceful about the way she’d dreamt of blood and terror, only to awake in a sweat filled bed, her only sense of solace coming from the bottom of a bottle. mary had never known peace, for her mind had always been at war. yet, if she had, she’d think of calm waters washing over her, the sound of the wind brushing against the trees as she made her way through darkened forest, where she’d feel at home. where she’d feel safe.
HIPPOLYTA: What is your biggest regret?
being vulnerable, being a target, being small, being unable to vocalize the pain she’d felt everyday since. not keeping her mouth shut, being abrasive and vile, being cruel to those who’d only tried to help. being a muggleborn, whilst completely out of her control. being less than enough, never feeling as though she was all there, never learning to control her anger, to suppress the demons she’d felt tearing her apart from the inside out. drinking herself to oblivion, never making a home out of the people who’d shown her affection, caring too much about what they’d thought, hiding herself away. she’d lost the key too many years ago that now, mary remained even a locked box to her own self. “ taking divination , an absolute waste o’time if ya ask me.”
MACBETH: Have you ever killed anyone? Would you?
in the past, mary would’ve hesitated. she would’ve held back every instinct she had that scratched against the roof of her mouth to speak her truth. every night, she’d murdered him in her mind. every night she’d dreamt of bloodied hands at the cost of one ––– mulciber. he’d bared his teeth, drawn out a darkness that had seeped through mary’s veins and corrupt her as if a virus. she would never recover, and much to relief, she didn’t crave that innocence anymore. instead, she’d accepted the consequences of war, the stench of death that lingered in the air. “no, i haven’t.” quick and concise, her answer boils blood and causes a roaring desire in her stomach. she was a monster of her own creation, a liar. would she? would she kill someone if it meant another got to live, would she kill out of spite, out or revenge? her fingers twitch, running frail digits through her brunette locks as she answers, vocals deadpanned. “in a heartbeat.”
