When he finds out Clem has been bitten he shuts himself off (much like the scene in the drugstore in the game, when he's completely silent) as he tries to process that he's going to lose Clem and he feels nauseous about it
The thought of what happened to Katjaa on the train is brought back to him and he's scared for Clem. He really doesn't want what happened to be real
He isn't around when AJ makes the decision because he leads off the walkers around the barn so that AJ and Clem have a safe space to rest for a while (despite how much he wished he was the one who had to put Clem out of her misery, he'd rather hold onto the guilt than have AJ do it)
When he returns, AJ had already cut her leg off and Duck carries her all the way back to the school
Duck is shocked and scared when he finds Clem legless and AJ covered in blood. And he hates that AJ had to do that
He doesn't let himself panic, not when Clem is literally bleeding out. He only lets himself feel again when Clem has been properly cared for. He refuses to leave her side until she wakes up, literally abandoning his needs because he needs to know she's gonna wake up and he needs to be there when it happens so she knows she's safe
He's not as talkative during that time, in fact he probably only says a few words during the entire time Clem is recovering
