Crazy to me how much a design as simple as Electrode's has changed so much over the years like its eyes were originally supposed to be more like Voltorb's not the little dots.

I also wanna mention how detached we are from Poké Balls and especially Voltorb and Electrode being gachapon capsules. Notice how there's a kind of circular seam on Electrode's head in the sprite and on the bottom in this old art (and vaguely the Silver sprite)

It's even more obvious in the Carddass cards where it's using Explosion and just splitting in half while Koffing is using Self-Destruct and entirely shattering.

This is almost certainly why items in the overworld are represented by Poké Balls, it's meant to feel like a random gacha pull and after Poké Balls had their designs fleshed out and the series became more visually detailed that was just kinda lost. Electrode works not just because it's a living Poké Ball but also because it being a mimic is directly tied to the idea of the items being random (until you memorize it or look at a guide)
