Myths: Demons - n. an evil spirit or devil, especially one thought to possess a person or act as a tormentor in hell.
Contemplating souls | James&Whitney
littlestdiamond:
Whitney couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows at him. Always feeling as if she was half entertainment, half semi capable discussion partner where he was concerned. Often with comments like that, she wondered if he meant them, or if he was slightly mocking her. It infuriated her that she couldn’t tell. “This particular, incredibly expensive looking one, yes.” She said with a small shrug, standing her ground. Not that she had any idea about cars. Makes, models, engines. No clue what so ever, but she did know which ones raised a certain price tag. Her fathers underground garage of vehicles had taught her that much. “Dissing your car is me being mean to you? How very guy like of you. But if you’re waiting for me to take it back or apologize, you might as well drop me off again.” Her stubbornness was showing, and the girl herself wasn’t even that surprised.
Despite the cars exterior, what she would admit to was that it was nice and comfy on the inside. The smell of new car was faded, but not entirely lost, the seats were soft, for leather seats anyway, and the radio system looked to be rather fancy, the kind that could play music at a near intolerable level. The oddness of their interactions however had no such bounds apparently. Whitney couldn’t decide if it was curious that they kept bumping into each other in random, seemingly unchosen places, or it it was, in lack of a better word, slightly creepy. Maybe normalcy wasn’t meant for them. Or maybe the universe was just being particularly good at placing them together. She had no idea why, and she could never decide if it was a good or a bad thing. He made her feel on edge, say and do things she usually wouldn’t. That was not someone you should like being around. And yet, she did.
As he started to really drive, it struck her that she had not given him an address, nor could she. Not a real one, not one that wasn’t another lie. No one, not even the regular cab drivers of New York, had ever driven her to the front door of the apartment. She always directed them to stop several blocks away. Twisting her hands together in her lap, Whitney searched for a decision, what to do. And yet, seeing as he hadn’t asked, she might have a bit more time. Chances were they’d be stuck in traffic anyway. “You said to do what I want, what makes me happy, because its my decision to make, not my family’s.” She stated, her voice falling back into its normal quiet self. “You were right though, and I don’t regret taking that advice, I should have done so years ago.” It was so easy to be wise after the fact, to realize that what you had done in the past, the decisions you had made, were incorrect. Were more harmful to you than they were to others. “Probably. Knowing or thinking that doesn’t make it much easier to follow trough, but there is a certain relief in not being able to turn back.” Lifting her gaze from her hands, and placing it back on him, she offered a small smile. “So thank you, I guess.”
James simply shook her head at her comment. Usually, she spoke words that had him reeling, out of complete curiosity, she beguiled him a little bit. However much he thought he knew Whitney, she would throw him for a loop as soon as she came out of her shell, throwing sassy shade his way, which was beginning to be almost constant with their little meetings. But he knew that he was a catalyst for that. That he was an arrogant, albeit old acquaintance that elicited such behavior out of her, because he was there to wind her up. One of his favorite past times, something that he enjoyed perhaps far too much for he enjoyed the payment he received in the form of all her facial expressions and witty remarks.
Over the past 10 - 15 years they had vaguely known each other, he had become accustomed to the ‘new’ Whitney Diamond. Or, perhaps it was just they had never been this close, and this version of her was new to him. He enjoyed her presence, making her feel slightly uncomfortable, causing her to question most of her prevailing thoughts. He didn’t know why, particularly. But it quickly became one of his favorite past times.
He nodded his head, understanding now what advice she was speaking about, and he was pleasantly surprised she had gone through with it, he didn’t think she would be able to. When they had been speaking of it at the museum she almost seemed too assured that was not a road she wanted to venture down, confronting her family and telling them exactly how she felt, and what she wanted, no, needed. Something he had done when he was younger, a way to assert his authority over his parents when he was just a child, he had spent most of his childhood alone and reading, looking after himself. However, she now seemed to have done the same, tell her family that although they brought her into this world, her life was her own to control. “Your welcome.” He gave a small smile. She didn’t seem like she was happy with the fact that her life had changed, or perhaps it was just that. Acclimating to said changes. He hadn’t seen her bodyguards trailing behind them yet. It was almost like he sensed a hint of regret in her words and voice. “It’s hard at the start, but your new found independence will extinguish any flame of regret. Being King of your own world gives you a sort of...” He smirked as he thought of the word, “God-complex. I do whatever I want, whenever I want. I’m a relatively happy man.” He came to a stop at a set of lights, waiting with the rest of the traffic as he realized that he didn’t know where she was walking from, or, to. “Home to the Diamonds manor, then? Or have you got something else in mind?” The idea of James pulling up outside the household of the Diamond’s made him smirk slightly. And he certainly wouldn’t deny the chance.
You will always be a monster - there is no turning back from it. But what kind of monster you become is entirely up to you.

Nebulous Vestiges || Val & James
James always enjoyed the mental exercise found in questioning most of his prevailing modes of thought. Something that came frighteningly easy to him. He was a man who - even as a young boy - would delve deep into the recesses of his mind to try comprehend every thing that surrounded him. Only to find that some things, rarely, could not be explained.
So when he found his mind with floating thoughts towards Miss Alvarez, and her eerily fantastic Valentines day gift, he decided that it was not something that could be easily explained. A man, especially of his stature, thought about a thousand things in the span of a minute, and he freely admitted that some of his thoughts were about the fairer sex. However, Val’s face had entered his mind twice today. The first time was when he had woken, walked to his kitchen where he had posted her letter from her most recent gift. Containing one of his favorite quotes from Seneca. He wondered what she would say knowing he had taped such a thing to his fridge. The second time was when he was day dreaming in his board meeting, one of the rare occurrences where it lasted longer than an hour, full of monotonous, useless information spewed by men far older and far less qualified than himself. Only he didn’t want to think about Valentina Alvarez, certainly not as much as he was. He had met her a handful of times, although every single time she threw him off his game. Entered his personal space, danced around his questions, euphemisms and insinuations without falter.
Regardless, it was 3:23p.m when James decided that a strong drink was necessary. Ditching his glasses on his desk, he asked his personal assistant to hold all his calls and allow no one to enter. Pouring himself a glass of single malt, he sipped at the beverage, eyes darting to the busy NY skyline in front of him. His office was one of the ones on the very top of the Hartwell Industries building, and had a expansive view of Brooklyn and New York city behind it. He would have spent hours, perhaps weeks of his lifetime, looking out at this skyline and view, picturing and seeing the same thing but every time he perceived it, it was like he was seeing it for the first time. He would always see something different. A faint buzzing noise pulled him out of his thoughts, and he recognized the noise instantly to be his PA using the intercom.
“Mr. Hartwell? I’m sorry, she just -- she just barged through!” His brows furrowed and he was about to walk over to his desk to tell her that her vague information was not becoming, when his office door was opened and almost thrown against the wall.
A lot of people want to kill me, I take great pride in that.

Honesty Hour || Carmen & James
@masterjameshartwell
Explaining to her roommates exactly why she was wearing a nice dress and getting all dolled up in the middle of the week had been one thing. Explaining to them why there was a town car waiting for her downstairs when she left had been an entirely different challenge. And as said car pulled up to the restaurant, Carmen in her black stiletto heels gracefully stepping out onto the pavement and thanking the driver, she realised that things were only going to get more difficult from here. The brunette could dust off her zealous overconfidence all she wanted, but the truth was, this was far from her forte, and way out of her comfort zone.
Addressing the hostess, she was greeted by the other woman with a moderately polite smile, yet as soon as the name James Hartwell left her lips, it was as if Carmen had entered into an entirely different world; one where restaurant staff looked at her differently, treated her differently, and deferred to her with a level of respect that almost made her uncomfortable. It certainly didn’t help that she was already a little nervous; not having seen or spoken to her mentor in weeks, nor having any real experience of spending time with him alone outside of work before at all. Taking a deep breath, the trainee took a moment to adjust the hem of her black pencil dress, tucking a stray strand of hair that had fallen out of her elegant do-up behind one ear, before being escorted into the room.
At first, her steps were careful; her gaze flitting around, automatically scanning their surroundings, grasping the clutch in her hands as if her life depended on it. Upon seeing the familiar figure seated a couple of meters away, however, Carmen quickly straightened her posture. Schooling her expression into one of collected calm, she approached the table with a smile on her face, projecting a level of self-assurance that she certainly did not feel. “Hello, James,” she greeted, taking the seat that had been pulled out for her by a waiter. “It’s been a while.”
James sat alone at Maze. Something that wasn’t new for him, in fact, it was a tradition he liked to indulge in once a week. His favorite restaurant, at his most preferred table, in the back of the VIP section, alone with only his thoughts to keep him company. His back to the wall he could wallow in the safety of his thoughts, knowing no person could come up behind him.
He smirked slightly at his paranoia, which he attributed to be one of his most useful and incorrigible traits. In the span of a minute he could have thought about how a situation could go wrong, a numerous amount of ways, and how to solve said situation when shit hit the fan.Anticipating problems was all good and fun, but knowing how to solve said problems was imperative in his line of work.
However, Carmen’s birthday present posed a new dilemma altogether, and it was one James was having difficulty solving. He knew that a night with free reign on personal questions that demanded honest answers was something most people would revel in, partake with reckless abandon and enjoy, however he was dubious. The questions he had in his mind, he worried that perhaps they were over stepping some sort of boundary, especially with her reaction to his jests last time they were together. She ended up storming out of his office. He had smiled to himself at the time, her behavior was amusing, although petulant and slightly childish, he reminded himself that she had been through a lot. Regardless, he wasn’t happy with her missing weeks of work more than her storming out. And if it happened again, he told himself that he wouldn’t let it slide. He was James fucking Hartwell, and he had chosen Carmen to pass his knowledge onto, as far as he was concerned she was interested, but he wondered if she would do such a thing again. He smiled, he simply would not allow it, he told himself. He was lead strategist after all. Ultimatums and manipulation were his forte.
Her voice brought him out of his thoughts, staring at work emails on his phone, he looked up to see the waiter pulling out Carmen’s chair for her. His eyes raked over her figure, and her outfit, which was elegant and beautiful. He smirked as she had indeed heeded his wishes, and not only dressed up but dressed nicely. "Carmen.” James greeted as he locked his phone screen, pushing it to the side of the table as joined him. “Indeed, too long.” He turned to the waiter who was still lingering. “A bottle of your oldest red.” And then he left quickly, listening to his wishes. “You look... nice.” He smirked on the last word.
Valentine Blues
James,
“What man can you show me who places any value on his time, who reckons the worth of each day, who understands that he is dying daily? For we are mistaken when we look forward to death; the major portion of death has already passed, Whatever years be behind us are in death’s hands.”
“Nothing is ours, except time.”
(P.S If you could keep only one memory, what would it be?)
