“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls,’You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man.’… But what if we question the premise itself? Why should a woman’s success be a threat to a man?“ - Chimanda Ngozi Adichie
Lois Weber, an American silent film actress, screenwriter, producer and director, is considered “the most important female director the American film industry has known”, and “one of the most important and important and prolific film directors in the era of silent films”.
Lois Weber is one of my favourite Silent Film Directors, she had an awe inspiring ingenuity and pioneered dozens of film techniques we take for granted today.
It is unfortunate she is one of the most neglected silent film directors to date.
Weber has been credited with pioneering the split screen technique to show simultaneous action in her 1913 film ‘Suspense’.
If you haven’t seen this film, google it and watch it now. You won’t regret it.

Movie Director Portraits by Julian Rentzsch
German artist, Julian Rentzsch has composed highly intricate illustrations, which reference the cinematography of three legendary film-makers, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, and David Lynch. Digitally and manually constructed, the carefully placed typography falls elegantly on the cotton paper, resulting in a monochromatic and sophisticated finish perfect for film lovers.
