*  INTELLIGENCE  /  SCHOOL /  ATTENDANCE !

     before zack’s mom was sick, he always managed to maintain good grades.  he was never at a genius level, but it was clear he was smart enough to keep an a - b average. his so-called studiousness was to keep his mom happy, because for the most part, school didn’t really mean much to him yet. he used to be a horrible procrastinator and his mom would always warn him about last minute work not always reflecting his true intelligence, but since he managed to slide by on it, he stuck to the routine. what really saved his ass was his ability to memorize things quickly. he could binge study in a night, and typically score within a b-range and pass his end-of-year tests. he enjoyed school, but was bored with listening to the teaches lecture once he was a high school student.

in a lot of in his classes he was considered the class clown, normally loud and outspoken, typically able to make the class ( and sometimes even the teacher ) laugh. zack was viewed as a positive teen who always had an input, be it serious or a smartass comment.  he was rarely nasty, but didn’t let others step on his toes let alone others. this made him a generally liked kid, surfing between the waves of popularity and a wallflower. his friends were few and tight knit, ones he met back in elementary school and stuck with up until early high school years. typically he was seen with them in the hallways, sat with them at lunch. damn near inseparable  … until he started to disappear from school slowly and then all at once.

the funny thing was, zack had never missed a day without his mom knowing before the middle of sophomore year. he knew if he did, she would have his head and take a few years of his life off if he skipped and she found out. the days he missed were legitimate, only for days when zack was too sick to get out of bed. only, eventually, it was his mom who was too sick to get out of bed. it was a slow descent at first. it began with his mom feeling lethargic more often than not and sometimes he’d find himself having to wake her up to take him to school. when it became a prevailing issue, she tried to keep him at arm’s length with her health and assure him that she was fine up until she couldn’t use the excuse anymore.

for the most part, zack would find himself being taken to work by a co-worker of his mom’s or riding the school bus. at times, he would try to stay home worrying more about her than himself, but often she would refuse him and ensure that his education was more important. he obeyed her wishes, but soon went against her when the bills started to stack up and she was officially unemployed. so, when zack was able to drive himself and apply for a job, he began to prioritize their money situation and keeping his mom comfortable over school and even himself. school meant nothing to him after the spring break of junior year and this lead to him barely managing to slide into his senior year.

zack’s presence dropped drastically at the school alongside his grades as he kept his situation with his mom to himself. the friends he had throughout the school year slowly became ghosts and nobody knew exactly what happened to zack taylor. some kids thought maybe he dropped out and got into drugs or maybe even ran away. at some point, his teachers stopped calling his name and damn near looked like they saw a ghost when he’d show up on a rare occasion ( had to at least ensure that truancy charges were off his back, right ? ).  grade cards were hidden from his mom, school’s numbers blocked on their phone and he never informed her of his employment at the auto-shop close to the end of town. he always felt guilty lying to her or avoiding her questions about school, but he knew that she could see through his lies, but couldn’t bring herself to address them. however, his mom also placed guilt on herself for her son’s disregard towards himself and schooling. if she wasn’t so sick, he would be applying for scholarships and hopefully setting his sights on college instead of sweating over medical bills. their home in melody mobile home park was filled with suffocating guilt and worry between a mother and son ever since.

however, this year is different. after meeting the rangers, zack was convinced to continue going to school mostly, due to a deal he made with them. if it wasn’t for their involvement, zack had planned to drop out and try to find a second job in order to support his mom. the veil over his schooling has lifted and he often shows his mom his grade cards and will sit beside her while he does his homework. his mom is happy to know that her son is attending school and has made friends again. it makes her self-imposed guilt of dampening his life lessen with every story he tells her and little does he know, that she knows exactly what he and his friends are.

so, since i headcanon zack as being held back a year due to all his absences, at the time of finding the coins at the beginning of the school year he’d have already turned 19. after all, his birthday is may 3rd. that would make the others a year or so younger than him. second oldest would be trini already 18, birthday being august 9th . jason would be 17, but turning 18 on october 20th. kim 17 until february 14th and billy 17 until april 1st the following year.
