Matthew's state of being after getting shot

The Effects of Roan's Gun on Demons: Demons will be hit with the full extent of the gun shot. The bullet will penetrate through their skin, draining power and reducing healing. Because of the large concentration of white magic demons will be severely harmed by the shot, losing their powers for a limited amount of time as their black magic has to fight to expel the white magic from their body. The bullet wound will leave a permanent scar. The scar will follow them if they change to another body or go into the underworld.

Matthew was shot in the left side of his chest, the bullet just barely missed his heart and other vital organs. He needed surgery to extract the bullet in his near-death state which he entrusted to Isabelle to handle since she is the only person he contacted after getting shot.

Given the gravity of his injury, he will be depowered in-game for 6 months starting from January 20th 2026 (when his thread with Roan was finished) with him gradually returning to full strength by July 20th 2026.

Jo snorted softly. "Depends on what she'd be looking for. If it's a meaningful, stable emotional connection, I'd strongly advise against me." Her thoughts snagged briefly on the memory of a dark-haired woman she'd spent years carefully avoiding, standing across from her in a quiet park. The hurt on her face—only for another wave of elation to wash it all away. A lazy smile tugged at one corner of her mouth. "If she's just looking to have a good time, though? I think I'd rank pretty high."

The smile lingered a second before her attention drifted elsewhere, following lights she wasn't entirely sure were moving before it returned to Matthew. "Why? I mean, I get it. You have a stick up your ass the size of the Eiffel Tower, but why? Aren't we just kind of… inconsequential to you? Isn't everyone?" The observation arrived without any real bite behind it. More curiosity than accusation. More the sort of thing that slipped out when her usual filter had packed up and gone home.

Then Matthew pointed toward the assortment of chemical escapes surrounding them. Jo followed the gesture, squinting vaguely before letting out a soft scoff. "No. I don't do drugs." Which was technically true. Mostly. Not on purpose anyway. Her eyes closed briefly as warmth rolled through her again, settling heavy in her limbs. The craving was there, faint and sharp at the same time, tugging her attention toward the absence left behind by fangs no longer in her throat. Warm blood no longer coating her tongue. Toward the vampire who'd vanished thanks to Matthew's uniquely sunny disposition. Maybe this didn't count. Maybe one more time wouldn't hurt.

"The subtle self-deprecation is charming," Matthew returned with a roll of his eyes. He would have bristled even more from Joanna's words. but her inebriated state and the lack of bite behind those words stayed his hand. Then again, he did not have his powers right now, so Joanna was just lucky.

"That's a common trait with you inconsequential humans. Self-deprecation, self-flagellation... It's boring. Especially when your lives are so short and so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You're just gone in the blink of an eye. Why should I bother to pay you any mind?" And yet becoming human was something Matthew's past self wanted and it was something he paid dearly for.

"Why not? Is it because it's against those human laws of yours?" the fallen deity scoffed.

“Tricks? What else would I want it for?” Eiji questioned, then shook his head. As pathetic as he felt for it being true, he was being upfront about his reasoning. “I don’t think I would come to a demon elder with something so embarrassing if there was another reason I could use to explain it.” He added, shifting his feet.

"I don't know the sort of nefariousness goes on in that mind of yours, Zachariah," Matthew tutted. "Thinking up a curse like this is not something I expected from you, but I will admit that I am also not entirely surprised. And there's nothing embarrassing about engaging in some curse magic. You humans have been seeking out such magics for as long as I can remember."

“Well, thank you!” She said with a smile, looking around as Matthew gestured. It was so exciting to be here, that she didn’t even mind nor notice if Matt’s tone was dry or sarcastic. She genuinely just felt happy to be there.

His next words made her chuckle softly and shake her head. “So you are the uncommon sort?” She asked. She knew that teasing and bothering strangers could end badly, especially those who looked as frustrated as this one, but Rau liked to push limits sometimes. Besides, she never really saw her hauntings as something illegal or criminal, it was more like a very enjoyable duty to her. Living beings needed to be reminded about respect towards the dead sometimes. “Is more enjoyable than sitting alone grouching. What about a walk, then? You can teach me about the city, and I promise you, you’ll be more relaxed by the end of it!”

Matthew's expression soured further because it was clear that this one could not detect sarcasm. These types were the most frustrating. Had Matthew had his magic, he would have psychically turned her away and made her keep walking just to get her off his back, but alas.

"I'm not walking you around the city like some private tour guide either." That was clearly very much beneath his station and the look of disdain on his face reflected that. "All this for a light? What is this city coming to?" he grumbled and took another drag of his cigarette before turning away to pointedly ignore her.

For all his verbosity and ego, James had surprisingly few friends. There were the constant line of sycophants of course, but they weren't real friends. They weren't the sort of people that James wished to share a drink with. Of those that qualified, James could count the number whom he more than tolerated on one hand. Thus he picked up the phone to dial his favorite demon.

The human rolled his eyes, scoffing as he waved his hand in the air. The gem of the ring already showing signs of overuse with its dulled color and tiny cracks. Whenever someone asked, James claimed it to be a sentimental piece that no one but himself be allowed to touch. The stories he told behind it growing ever more intimate as he dissuaded his followers from questioning why their profit wore such a thing when they would eagerly buy his something much more befitting of his station.

"All business with you." He tutted, gesturing for Matthew to sit. "It makes you incredibly dull. I happen to be here on pleasure." He leaned forward, sliding a drink Matthew's way. "I figured that we could talk."

"Pleasure?" Matthew returned with an arch of a dark brow, barely acknowledging the drink James slid his way.

"You're not here to regale me with stories of your congregation, are you? They're not terribly interesting..." he added with a vague wave of his hand before finally picking up the drink. It was always good to put the human down a little, to remind him of his place between them. "Unless you've found me more of those Artemis folk."

It was interesting to hear that first part. Rau picked up on it quickly. This man was some sort of pyromaniac? Maybe he was alone out here just waiting so he could burn something down to the ground. Rau had to wonder if she just stumbled upon a criminal. He seemed standoffish and rude, of course he wanted to be left alone. Unfortunately, Rau was aware of this, and she simply didn’t care.

Rau crossed her arms at chest level and glanced around. “I got here a few hours ago. I don’t know anyone.” She said with a shrug, turning to look at him again. “You like scaring people with fire? I like scaring people sometimes too, but by tossing their things around.” She said with a grin, remembering how she would enter the houses of rude farmers or animal beaters, and just toss their shit around their home. It was thrilling, and it often led to a lesson learned and new behaviors. “You want to scare someone tonight?” She asked casually, as if she were inviting him to grab a coffee.

"A few hours ago? Well, welcome to Vievecor City," Matthew said with a wave of his hand as he gestured to their surroundings. "I hope it's all you've imagined it to be."

This woman sounded a bit strange as she described what she liked doing. As far as Matthew knew, she seemed like a human being with strange habits. "That's an odd request. And I'm not some common criminal the way you sound like you are," he scoffed. "What would scaring someone tonight do for me in the long run?" It certainly would not help him get his powers back, Matthew griped internally.

Jo let out a soft, breathy laugh at that, her head still tipped back against the seat. “For the record,” she said, words dragging slightly at the edges, “I’d sleep with your wife in this life too.” Her gaze drifted back toward him then, hazy but sharp underneath it. “If you had one. Poor woman would probably be miserable.” The grin that followed was crooked, faintly mean in a way that felt more reckless than sincere. “And for the love of God, stop with the Detective,” she added after a beat, wrinkling her nose slightly. “You make it sound like I’m supposed to have standards. I mean, look around you.”

Her fingers tapped lazily against her knee as she looked at him again, slower this time. “Seemed like you were carrying some lingering resentment for me holding a gun to your head when you found me bleeding out in that alley,” she mused. “That seemed pretty personal to me. Or maybe you’re just always this unpleasant.”

Matthew’s question lingered between them for a second too long after that. Jo went quieter in a way she usually didn’t, gaze drifting somewhere past the crowd and lights and pulse of the club below them. When she finally answered, the words came easier than they should have, softened around the edges by blood loss and borrowed euphoria alike. “Pain,” she admitted lightly then followed it with a faint shrug. “But let’s pretend it was the music.”

Her eyes slid shut as she let her head tip back once more, the ghost of a laugh catching on her breath. “Damn,” she murmured. “Does it always feel this good?”

"Go right ahead. If I had a wife, she'd be allowed to sleep with whomever she chooses. I'd just hope she'd have better taste," Matthew retorted with narrowed eyes.

"And I thought you'd know by now that I'm always unpleasant. Comes with the territory, especially when it comes to humans like yourself..." What was one more human lying bleeding and dying in an alley anyway? Matthew did not owe any of them anything, least of all one who was as annoying as Joanna Darling.

The fallen deity watched as Joanna's head lolled backwards and she floated on the euphoria that being fed from had brought her. It was a familiar feeling, one that Matthew chased more often than not himself, one that he was there that night to engage in as well. But Joanna did not have a demon's physical disposition and to a human like her, it was courting death. And perhaps in Matthew's current depowered state, would it be the same for him too?

"It does, actually. And it will feel better if you're taking something more. Although I'm sure you know that already..." Matthew pointed to the various drugs on offer all around the club.

“Lucky for you, then,” Dorian replied, the irritation still there beneath the remark as he snapped the lighter shut again, though he didn’t pocket it immediately. Recognition was hardly unusual. People had known his face long before they knew anything worth saying about him. But recognition here—on the streets of Klin, in the middle of this fucking nightmare—carried a different sort of weight. His gaze lingered a moment longer on the man in front of him. Wealth recognized wealth easily enough, even stripped of context. The coat, the cigarette box, the way the other man carried himself—he was clearly someone of influence, and Dorian had never been in the habit of ignoring opportunity. “And who might you be?”

At the question, his expression tightened almost imperceptibly. Several hours wasted moving through overcrowded streets and festival traffic had done little for his patience and even less for his mood. “I’m looking for someone,” he said plainly. “Someone currently in possession of something that belongs to me.” His hands lifted slightly then, gesturing vaguely toward himself—to the expensive clothes hanging off a body that wasn’t entirely there, to the noticeable transparency below his knees, to the entire impossible situation clinging to him like a bad joke. “And I intend to get it back.”

Matthew levelled the man with an arched look, content to observe the other man as he spoke. Who could Dorian Wells be looking for in the streets of Klin that he had to do so himself? That was curious. And when the man gestured downwards and Matthew's gaze followed, it took almost all of the fallen deity's self control not to raise his eyebrows in surprise.

"My name is Matthew. Matthew Alexander," the fallen deity introduced himself simply as blue eyes stayed on Dorian's transparent feet for a long moment before he dragged his gaze back up to the spirit's face. Dorian was behaving like a lingering spirit with a grudge and now this was even more curious. Someone as rich and obnoxious as this man certainly seemed like someone who would hold a grudge even in death.

"And what would that be? I'd like to remind you that you're a spirit, Mister Wells. You're not entirely of the mortal plane anymore. You'd best be careful who you decide to reveal that to..." he tutted and made a playful swipe at where Dorian's feet should be with the tip of his well-polished shoe. As far as the human news cycles went, Matthew had been of the belief that Dorian Wells was alive and well. But rich families tended to hide such matters from the public when an heir was as unmistakably dead as the spirit before him.

There was some hesitation when Matthew first laid his hand on his shoulder, apprehensive of what he might ask of him but deciding that whatever it was, it was probably worth it. “Really?” He responded in a state of disbelief for a moment. “I mean, thanks.” Should he really be thanking a demon for taking away something that made his father who he was? Then again, Eiji had had his identity ripped away from him and no one (aside from his younger brother) had cared enough to even ask if he was alright. He just hoped Rei wouldn’t hate him for tying him to this situation, even if Eiji was trying to do it for his benefit.

"Of course," the fallen deity assured him with a wave of his hand. "This is a very specific curse you're asking for. You're not up to any other sort of tricks, are you?" Matthew asked as he lifted his hand from Eiji's shoulder. "I have to make sure that this is purely a family affair?"

Lian simply raised their brow in response. They could tell when something was a tough topic and Lian wasn't one to linger on difficult conversations so she didn't probe. It was a shame that there would be no mischief that night, unless they created it.

"Yes, later in the game," the witch agreed. The plan was simple and Lian grinned, turning their attention back to the game. Within a minute she had targeted the vampire that Matthew had his eyes on. A quiet curse was murmured under their breathe and they watched the vampire move to one side, letting a goal go sliding through. She didn't know what they were betting on but Lian was going to enjoy winning.

James had contacted Matthew again in recent weeks to ask to meet, something the fallen deity had kept putting off each time. He knew what the human was after. It was always the same thing each time they met when James held up an item that needed a little demonic recharge. This was not something Matthew could manage right now though, not in his depowered state, and he still did not know if or when his powers would return.

There was, unfortunately, only so long he could put off this meeting until James got suspicious and he decided to meet the man at a restaurant near Pandora's, the city's black magic store. He would be able to find some trinket or other to keep James occupied for awhile once the man told him what he needed.

"James," Matthew said in greeting when James took the seat across from him. "To what do I owe the pleasure this time? Did you drain the ring of magic already? I only just replenished it over Christmas..."

Elio’s eyes widened in recognition for a moment when Matthews back was turned. He reached out with his abilities, pinpointing the wound with the faintest bit of magic and grazing it with a numbing effect. “Would you even accept my help?“ Matthew’s clear lack of communication suggested a clear no, but Matthew had certainly surprised him before.

Matthew felt the magical relief instantly because the pain dissipated and his body instinctively drew in a much needed breath that even shocked the fallen deity himself. He lifted a hand and his fingers unconsciously grazed the wound and found a much lower degree of pain there before he turned back to look at Elio.

It would be so easy to give in and accept the help, but Matthew was not known to be an easy person, especially when it came to deities. "I wasn't expecting you today. Or at all..." Not after their last conversation when Matthew told himself to just write Elio off because it would've been easier that way. "And I'm surprised you came all this way to offer, especially given what you represent. Wouldn't that go against all that you stand for?"

"Well that's horse shit," Augustine retorted with a smirk, pocketing the lighter and nursing over the answer, or lack there of. It seemed pretty clear the demon had something stopping him from lighting the cigarette himself, but what? "What if I ask why we haven't had any lessons this spring? Is that also you switching things up?"

Matthew narrowed his eyes at Augustine, feeling a vein twitch in his forehead already. He hated that the other man was so perceptive and he was hating his still-depowered state even more.

"What if it is? Leaving you alone to practice in the real world while I had better things to do would be effective as well. I do hope you've been practicing on your own and not been solely reliant on me to hone your magic for you. That's not how magic works."

Jo’s attention dragged toward Matthew slowly, like her brain had to fight through syrup to get there. Recognition came a second later, followed almost immediately by the shift beside her as the vampire pulled away. Jo caught the flicker of movement at the corner of her eye—the smooth excuse, the practiced retreat. Right. She probably wasn't eager to explain to a council member why she’d just slipped a human vampire blood in violation of one of Artemis’ new terms. Not that Matthew would give a damn.

Ordinarily, Jo might have cared more that the woman was leaving. About the sudden absence of teeth and hands and warmth. About the sharp little drop that came with it. But the feeling slid loose before it could settle properly, dulled under the heavy warmth still humming through her veins. Her hand lifted instead, fingers brushing sluggishly against the smear of crimson at the side of her neck before dropping back into her lap.

Matthew’s voice filtered through the haze, annoyingly familiar even through the fog. Jo’s mouth twitched faintly at that, somewhere between a grimace and the beginning of a laugh. “Why so formal, Mr. Alexander?” she asked slowly, blinking up at him with visible effort. “Haven't we been through enough to be on a first name basis? You sleeping with my husband. Me sleeping with your wife.”

Her head tipped back against the seat again, gaze drifting over him without much focus. “But yes, I'm actually having a really good time right now.” The admission came easier than it should have, looser, carried on the edge of a breathy laugh. “Which should probably feel a little offensive considering that's not what I came here for.”

A beat passed before her brows knit faintly. “Wait.” She squinted at him. “Aren’t you supposed to hate this place? Isn’t this kind of beneath you?” Her gaze drifted lazily around the room before returning to him. “To what do us peasants owe the pleasure of your company?”

"We are hardly on first name terms, Detective. Even so, those acts were committed in dreams. I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking they mean anything in the real world," Matthew responded with a curl of his lip as he continued looking down at her with judgement in his eyes.

"I do not hate this place." The fallen deity could tell when someone was in Level Four to use the vampires as an escape, a means to a destructive end, and that familiar look was written all over Joanna's face -- as it used to be written all over his own.

"I can lower myself to engage with peasants such as yourself if I so wish," he said, using the word she chose to use. "Tell me. What is it that you actually came here for?"

Rau watched as the stranger brought the lighter to his cigarette, then extended her hand to put it away when the stranger gave it back to her. At least, it seemed as if he was irritated, but nothing about his demeanor made her think he could be aggressive or dangerous for now. Still, Rau stayed slightly on edge as she watched him.

His comment about the lighters brought a small smile to her face. “No fires. But you look like you’d enjoy burning something other than that cigarette, huh?” She suggested. If there was mischief to be had, Rau was the correct person for the job. She knew it was a joke, of course, but she wouldn’t be opposed to the idea of creating some chaos, so long as they found a proper victim. “Why are alone during the festival?” She asked curiously.

"You wouldn't be wrong about me and burning things," Matthew said with a nod, his face remained impassive with a slight hint of imperiousness, as if he was doing the stranger a favour by speaking with her.

The fallen deity frowned at the woman's question. "I'm taking a smoke break. This is usually the time when I wish to be alone," he replied as he exhaled another plume of smoke. "I could be asking you the same thing."

When he put it like that, Eiji felt all the more pathetic. “Yes.” He answered anyway, not surprised when the fallen deity called him desperate, not when he could hear it in his own voice. “I want a chance to put our family back together and a chance for Rei to still have what I can’t.” Eiji paused. It all seemed inferior when stood in front of a being as old as Matthew and asking for him to try and knit his family back together again. But he supposed that was why demon contracts thrived with their human market.

“It’s not exactly a secret that you don’t see eye-to-eye with my father, I figured you would like the chance to see him lose something important to him.” Eiji waited for a moment, before adding, “I guess the rest of the term is up to you. What do you need?”

"That is an understatement," Matthew laughed as he took a step closer to Eiji and reached a hand out to place on the young man's shoulder. They had been spending more time together lately and Matthew had listened to his rants about Elijah, amongst other things, and it only solidified the type of person the older Remington was in Matthew's eyes -- an irresponsible, selfish man who only cared about himself.

"I'll do it for you, Eiji," the fallen deity said with a smile. "I'll even do it for free because watching your father be brought down to such a state of helplessness will be more than enough entertainment for me."

"Nun ya business govena..." The deity threw her head back giggling amused at both herself and the voice that wormed it's way in her brain. "Love that! The accent totally fits the aesthetic."

The push was nothing, barely a shove and if she was honest with herself she expected it. A lot of the older deities, in this case former deity could be quiet stiff, depressing even, but after being alive for thousands upon thousands of years would likely drain any being.

"Oh don't be a sour puss. You're a gruncle, please tell me I don't have to explain this to you, you do like live in this century right?" Looking away for amount she seemed embarrassed for him before turning her full attention right back to him. "You're a grumpy uncle. It fits though right? You're grumpy and old like an uncle, thus, a gruncle."

"That is NOT what I sound like!" Matthew growled, lip curling on one side to clearly show his disdain, as if he were not already. Why was this deity (derogatory) so full of energy and, ugh, pep?

"Living in this century has nothing to do with how vulgar it is for you to be making up words like that." Matthew had half a mind to slap Lindley away from him again but the shove earlier had done nothing and he did not want to invite more questions if she had noticed anything amiss.

"Get away from me. Take a good five steps back before I make you."
