hello all. i have been very absent from tumblr lately, as i’m in the process of moving. but i wanted to pop on to say my piece about current events.
there’s so much id like to say, so much i don’t have words for. i’ve been overwhelmed by emotions lately... fear, despair, hopelessness, rage, compassion.
i am half asian and half white. i know i have an incredible amount of privilege due to being mixed and my predominately white appearance. i proudly stand with my fellow minority groups, especially the black community, now and always. we see you, we hear you, and we will help you end this.
however. because i am not black, i would never attempt to speak as if i know their pain, because i don’t. i never will. i have been doing my best to educate myself, to listen to black voices, to share on my more personal platforms.
here are a few things i’d like to share:
1. if you do not believe black lives matter, unfollow me now. you are not welcome here.
2. all lives cannot matter until black lives matter
3. if you are white/non black poc, do not tell black people how they should be feeling. do not criticize black celebrities/creators for not speaking out. do not criticize the way people are protesting. it is not your place.
4. you cannot fix a system that is working exactly the way it was meant to. our country was founded on systematic racism and runs on it to this very day. in order to see change, we must change the system entirely.
5. white silence right now is deafening. if you are not educating, listening, and speaking out, you are actively supporting racism. check and use your privilege.
6. IT IS NOT A BLACK PERSON’S RESPONSIBILITY TO EXPLAIN TO A WHITE PERSON THEIR PRIVELEGE. IT IS NOT A BLACK PERSON’S JOB TO EXPLAIN WHY BLACK LIVES MATTER. IT IS OUR JOB ALONE TO EDUCATE OURSELVES ON ISSUES WE WILL NEVER FACE BC OF OUR PRIVELEGE, AND TO HELP THE BLACK COMMUNITY END THIS.
there’s so much more to say, but i suggest you find black creators/black curated resources on ways you can learn and help. (blacklivesmatter.org , george floyd petition , breonna taylor petition , ahmaud arbery pétition are a few resources to get started.)
remember that help comes in many forms. speaking out against racism. educating others. signing free petitions and sharing them. monetary donations and physical protests are off limits for a lot of people right now, but they are not the only ways to help!
i apologize for the near radio silence, and for not making my stance clear sooner. know that it is a privelege to feel uncomfortable/surprised by the police brutality and blatant racism you are seeing recently. black people see it every day of their entire lives. the fight doesn’t end once it isn’t trendy to support blm anymore.
the revolution is coming, my friends. no justice, no peace. black lives matter. do what you know is right. all love xx
