Audience and Market Research
For my EP, I have decided to produce two tracks that both fall into the indie rock genre. The two songs that I have been working on take inspiration and sound similar to the music of welsh rock band The Stereophonics. I have decided to look into where The Stereophonics distribute their music, to get ideas on the audience that I should be targeting as well as the best platforms to use for the genre of music.
I have decided to start my research by looking into the different ways The Stereophonics release their music. Like many modern-day bands and artists, The Stereophonics release their music on to different streaming services for fans to download their music.
The streaming services used by the welsh band include popular streaming sites like YouTube, Spotify, ITunes, Apple Music, Deezer. This is along with other services as such as Google Play and Amazon Music. Fans of The Stereophonics are also able to download or buy physical copies of the band’s music from their official website, where you are able to purchase multiple different albums including deluxe editions.
As you would expect, The Stereophonics sell physical copies of their different albums in the form of CDs and vinyl.
Over the years, The Stereophonics have been played on multiple radio stations. Radio stations as such as Radio X and Absolute Radio are current stations that cater for people who enjoy listening to indie rock and guitar based music as opposed to other genres like pop or metal. Other artists that are often get played on these two radio stations include bands like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Arctic Monkeys and solo artists like Noel and Liam Gallagher.
If I were looking to release my EP to the public, I feel I would have to go about it in a similar way to indie bands like The Stereophonics and Catfish and the Bottlemen. Indie rock music as a genre is popular in many parts of the world. Many different places in the world have created their own scenes based around the indie genre, Manchester having Madchester with the likes of the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays, and Seattle having Grunge with bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. In the United Kingdom, indie rock music gets listened to in pretty much every city with Coventry and Oxford being the two cities where the genre is listened to most.
Indie currently seems to be a genre of music that is enjoyed by people of all ages with the genre becoming increasingly popular. Interestingly, indie music is most popular with people ranging between the ages of 18-24 showing that the genre is appreciated by people studying further education at universities or by those in work at a similar age range.
Indie music, as I have already pointed out, seems to be about people creating different scenes depending on where they are and the artists they are actually listening to. If the music were to be performed then it would probably get the best reaction in cities in the northern parts of the country. Cities like Liverpool and Manchester would be great to release indie music into because they have a large music scene and a large number of indie and rock bands have made a name for themselves in these places.
I intend on releasing my EP onto streaming services as such as Spotify and Apple Music. I plan on doing this because this seems to be the most common way of releasing music in this day and age, whatever the genre. Spotify and Apple Music are really good ways of getting your music out there because of the ‘similar artists’ feature. This feature is really helpful because it recommends your music when a listener is listening to an artist that plays similar music to yourself, meaning that you can gain new followers and hopefully increase your fan base.
Another way of getting my EP listened to online, is by sending it over the music review blogs as well as music review YouTube channels. An example of this would be the blog Hypebot. The blog is great because, they post regular in-depth posts about multiple things related to the industry. Hypebot is also aimed towards indie musicians, meaning that it would be a great platform to get my music reviewed on.
A similar way to get music reviewed would be to send my music to different music magazine companies. Magazines as such as Total Guitar magazine, It’s all Indie, and Kerrang! Magazine, are great at promoting up and coming bands and artists and help to build your profile.
Social Media is currently an amazing way to promote and express anything you wish. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat can be used to promote the EP by posting regular posts. The posts can include pictures of the EP artwork as well as links to the different platforms that you can purchase and download the music from. Local band ‘Watercolours’ are very active on social media and regularly post links for their audience to purchase their music as well as merchandise.
In terms of radio stations, I could approach different small radio stations as such as BBC Hereford and Worcester to arrange interviews where I promote my sound and talk about influences and ideas. As a student, I could approach the student radio station Tone Radio and request if my music could be played on their station in the different student union bars on all of the campuses. Local country artist Demi Marriner has done this in the past, and it is a great way of getting a larger amount of people to listen to my music.
Another idea I could use to promote my EP is to have adverts on YouTube videos as well as on social media sites like Facebook. I have found that this is a common way of promoting music with a number of indie artists, the most recent one being Blossoms. The Blossoms have recently had a clip of their new single’s music video appear as an advert on YouTube, making you aware that new music is out. This could be a really good way to promote my EP and maybe even help to gain a broader following.
Gig Review – The Best Gig I have been to
Foo Fighters, Broken Leg Tour Review.
For many years I have attended a large number of gigs either with my family or with different groups of friends. I always felt that as a musician it is important to go to as many different types of gig as possible, either to gain a greater knowledge of how different performers act whilst they are on stage or to maybe experience bands that I have not heard of before.
I can easily say that for the last 3 to 4 years of my life that I have really appreciated and loved the music of the Foo Fighters, and have tried to imitate their performance with my own playing and song writing.
I have wanted to see the Foo Fighters play live since I first discovered their music and was really frustrated to not be able to purchase tickets for their Wembley Stadium gig back in 2015. After lead vocalist Dave Grohl broke his leg on stage, he announced that the band would be playing the Break a Leg Tour to which I was incredibly lucky to get a ticket for to watch the band play at the National Bowl with a friend of mine.
After months of waiting, the day finally arrived for us to head on down to Milton Keynes. We parked the cars in a car park about a 10-minute walk away from the National Bowl and from the moment I got out the car, I just watched in awe the masses of people heading towards the arena. Once we made it to the National Bowl itself and had our security checks, we headed on down through the fun fair and towards the main stage. To make the most of the experience, we decided that we wanted to stand as close the stage as possible without actually getting into the mosh pit. We managed to get a couple of rows back from the barrier before the stage, just as the first support act walked on stage.
I feel like I was getting my money’s worth when fairly new rock band Royal Blood came on and played an exceptional set just before second support act Iggy Pop graced the stage.
My enjoyment of the event was building as I stood there watching Iggy and his band control the audience and making everyone in the arena feel pumped up and ready to watch the main event.
As daylight started to disappear, the stage lights turned red as the unmistakable intro of Everlong started to play from behind the curtain that was setup for the Foo Fighters to get ready. As soon as the whole band came in, the curtain dropped and the whole arena started to bounce. I had never experienced anything like it before and the epic start only left me with more confidence for the rest of the night.
As the gig continued, the one thing that really grabbed my attention was how well Dave Grohl was able to control the audience. Even whilst he was sat down on his thrown due to his injury.
Grohl has been a hero of mine for a few years now but he really captured all of my respect that evening.
One of the stand out moments of the gig took place when Dave Grohl announced that the band would be joined on stage by two living legends in John Paul Jones and Rodger Taylor to perform their version of the Queen song ‘Under Pressure’. I felt so privileged to be able to watch not only my favourite band, but also two real legends of the music industry, all on one stage.
The performance was a complete different experience to anything I had seen before, with the Foo Fighters playing for over 3 hours! The final song was a special moment for me as the performed my favourite ever song ‘Best of You’. My night has fully been made and I just wished that I was able to be up on that stage, performing to all of those people.
I remember leaving the gig filled with happiness and awe as the crowd continued to sing the lyrics and oohs of Best of You. The chanting and singing lasted until we made it back to the cars and I remember thinking that I just wanted to write a song as successful as that.
MD5311 001 - Matt Yapp
The track that I have recorded for my demo track, is a song that I have written myself. The track is an indie/pop song and has standard instrumentation that you would expect to find in other songs of the same genre. The track has vocals, drums, bass guitar, and both rhythm and lead electric guitar parts.
Due to the fact that this is only a demo track, I did not choose to record any of the guitar or bass guitar parts using amplifiers or microphones and recorded these parts using my audio interface. Recording using the audio interface allowed me to record these guitar and bass parts from home directly into my MacBook. I did, however, plug my guitar into my pedal board and then into the interface to try and get a fairly natural sounding tone. I decided to use Logic Pro X so that I could use the built-in plugins and amplifiers.
The parts I decided to record using microphones where the drums and the vocal. I originally programmed MIDI drums onto the demo when I first started recording my guitar parts to get a general idea of how the song would sound as a whole. I chose to record the drums using microphones because I wanted to actually capture the natural sound and different characteristics of the drum kit. The vocals obviously had to be recorded using a microphone.
The microphones that I used to record the drum kit were, an AKG D112 on the kick drum, a Sennheiser MD421ii for the snare drum, and a pair of AKG C414 XLII microphones as overheads. The D112 was placed inside the sound hole of the kick drum because I wanted to capture the low frequencies of the drum as well as the sound of the beater of the kick pedal. This helped to capture a nice and punchy sounding kick drum.
I placed the Sennheiser MD421ii at the top of the snare drum pointing down towards the center of the snare. The main reason that I chose to use this microphone was because it was the microphone used by Tom Bentley when I played drums on his demo and I really liked the sound that it captured. I placed the microphone in the center of the snare because it is the technique that I have always used in the past.
For my overhead microphones, I opted to use the C414’s because they are a matched pair and I really liked the sound they captured when we used them to record in a lecture at the start of the semester. The microphone setup that I have used for this track was the Glyn Johns technique. I feel that this technique is well suited for the genre of the song as it captures the sounds of the ride cymbal and floor tom really well. The Glyn Johns is also a microphone setup that I have used in the past and I have always liked its simplicity.
The microphone I have used for the vocal recording was the AKG C414 XLII. This microphone was chosen because I had Tom Bentley singing on my track and this is the microphone that captures his tonality the best. I placed the microphone in the center of the room facing the window.
In post-production, I did a fairly basic mix making sure that all of the tracks were at a decent level and that the song did not become too muddy. I added reverb onto the electric guitars and also onto the vocal. I decided to duplicate the vocal and then used the pitch transformation plugin on the second vocal track during the chorus to add a robot sounding harmony. I did this simply as an experiment and I really like the way that it sounds.
I feel my demo sounds very much like what it will sound like as a finished project although I may add a piano part to add variation.

Eurovision Song Revisited - Songwriting & Context
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pewPEDDRs84&feature=youtu.be
For this task, we looked to try and see which ways we could alter our song, Amor. We decided to try many different ways to change the way the song is played. The first way we tried was by simply altering the original chord progression, and tried singing new melodies on top of the new arrangement.
Our idea of changing the chord progression did not work because we found it very difficult to change the way in which the melody is sung. We decided to go to the rehearsal rooms and just try a stripped back version if the song. Will and myself did not sing our original parts and instead let Callum and Tom alternate the vocal parts.
We decided to make the instrumentation more generic pop instruments like acoustic guitar and piano rather than synths, which allowed the performers to sing the melodies differently. I really liked the way in which the verses have become more sung rather than rapped as it gives the lyrics a bit more emphasis.
If I were to pick which version I preferred, I would probably say the revisited version because I feel that it has become a song that could be played in different scenarios and the new melodies help to provide the story a bit more.
I do, however still love the Eurovision style that we originally came up with and had a great amount of joy creating it!

Aespia Festival
Aespia is a 24-hour festival which celebrates art and escapism. The festival is a no phones festival, allowing people to get creative and discover a meaningful connection to everything around them.
This festival is unique because it allows you to escape reality and take a break from normal day to day activities and helps you become really creative. There are no main stages at Aespia which allows people to wander wherever they want.
Samphire Festival
Samphire is a festival that brings art and creative people together and tries to introduce new and exciting music to those who attend. The music genres vary from music like acid house to dance music. This festival seems to be for people who are fairly wealthy or a part of a big family based on the prices for accommodation.
Beyond the Track
Beyond the Tracks festival is based in the center of Birmingham. Each day of the festival has its own identity, with each day being based on a different genre. This is a festival that is for middle-aged people but this can vary depending on which genre is being played on each day.
Houghton
This festival is curated by a DJ, with the majority of the acts being DJs rather than bands or solo artists.
Grinagog Festival
This festival brings a wide range of music but is mostly newer bands. Headline bands are up-and-coming indie bands with not a large following. This festival seems to be based more on the music rather than food or art unlike some of the other festivals. The festival will mostly appeal to younger people but can also be a great festival for anyone.

Eurovision Task - Songwriting & Context
Here is the YouTube link to the task for my Eurovision song, written and produced by Will Davis, Tom Bentley, Sam Burgess, Callum Cutler and myself.
Song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27ho1kocvkY
The idea of this track was to create a Eurovision inspired track as one of our module tasks. We all got together and discussed how to us Eurovision is a very cheesy concept, which we tried to show in our own track by using major melodies on synths and using a large amount of autotune on the chorus vocal.
The song consists of four chords (E, B, C#m, A) which are repeated throughout the song with little amounts of variation. We decided to use these chords also in the bridge of the song but just reversed the order in which they where played.

Lyrics:
(Chorus) You are the flame inside my deepest desires With a heavy heart, I have to go Tell you I love you and then fade into the night I know my love was never enough
(verse) Girl your pretty fine Heres some piece of mind You’ll be better off alone but in the meantime Gotta take back control and just enjoy the ride
Its complicated and I hate to say it But I had to go my heart was persuaded Gotta find myself if love conquers all Then we’ll be together after all
(Chorus) You are the flame inside my deepest desires With a heavy heart, I have to go Tell you I love you and then fade into the night I know my love was never enough
(Verse) Please explain to me how it came to this Take me back to the night that we first kissed You’ve been on my mind since the night I left And I’m starting to think that I’m obsessed
(Bridge) Amor I'm not the man I used to be before Amor People change when hearts are left to burn Amor I’ve become a candle in the smoke Amor I light my own desires fuel my own hope
(Chorus) You are the flame inside my deepest desires With a heavy heart, I have to go Tell you I love you and then fade into the night I know my love was never enough Tell you I love you and then fade into the night I know my love was never enough
Village - Location Song
This song is something I will need to work on further as I really don’t feel happy with it so far but it is the first draft of my location song for a uni-task.
Structure is AAA
On the outskirts of those busy city streets,
Lies fields of green, filled with sheep that bleat,
With pubs made of stone,
Rather than offices made of concrete
This is my village,
It’s called Fernhill Heath
3,000 people get up each day,
Ready for work,
To earn their pay,
Local shops, selling milk and bread,
And local seamstress’ creating using thread,
This is my village,
It’s called Fernhill Heath

Origin Song - TASK 3
By Chloe Hepburn, Lottie Scraton, and Matt Yapp
Verse
Kicking about in the rain, It was that British summertime again, I rushed back inside as the sky started to dim But the darkness truly lingered from within.
He had a cigarette in one hand, His fist clench in the other, I crippled with fear as I latched onto my brother.
Broken pieces scattered across the floor, I couldn’t wait to go back to school.
Chorus
Because our house didn’t feel like a home, Dad, do you realize what you’ve done? The man I should’ve looked up to Only left me bruised, You didn’t realize what you’d done.
Soon he was gone, but his presence still remained, A delicate tulip started to wilt away. Out of work again, she couldn’t face the days, Never thought I’d have to see my mother in this state.
Tried to pick up these broken pieces, Although it’s not a little girl’s job.
Chorus
But we were living in a fragile home, And I couldn’t take the damage anymore, For someone so young, I could barely understand, But no one was there to lend a helping hand.

Protest song task.
Written by Sarah Walker and Matt Yapp
Songwriting in Context - Task Two
The protest song I have chosen to research is ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ by Irish band U2. The track was released in 1983.
‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ was written as a sort of response towards the events that took place in January 1972. The Paratroop Regiment of the British Army killed 14 people and injured a further 14 at civil rights demonstration that was taking place in Ireland’s, Derry. Everyone affected was innocent.
The track is not only aimed towards the the British Army, but towards the Irish Republican Army as well because they were also involved in the ‘bloodshed’.
The lyrics reject hate and try to question the actions of the armies and ask them what they really achieved. This can be seen by the lyrics ‘there’s many lost, but tell me who has won?’ Other lyrics as such as ‘broken bottles under children’s feet’ represent how children are been born and raised into a world full of conflict and disagreement. The one lyric that stands out to me is in the pre chorus ‘how long, how long must we sing this song?’ The lyric is effective because it is asking the question of how long must we live in the world of war that we currently live in.
The instrumentation in this track is very interesting and does its best to try and mimic a war type scenario. The drums are the prime example of this because of the militaristic beat.
I like this song because of how the message can be used not only for Ireland but also for the whole world.
