The photograph of lightning striking Merrick Butte in Monument Valley was taken by Carolyn Slay. Monument Valley is located on the Arizona-Utah border within the Navajo Nation Reservation. 

The formations are massive red rock buttes and spires rising from the desert floor, composed of sandstone shaped over millions of years. 

Monument Valley is a sacred landscape to the Navajo people and has been a prominent setting in numerous films and media.
