Hey guys, I'm Mauanna, and I am a writer who loves to spread my knowledge about writing, while also trying to learn new things from courses, stories that are shown either in movies, books or tv shows or listening to podcasts!

It's a bit hectic to juggle all of these with my day job at times, but I still try to manage that, the stories that I create and this blog and a semi-newsletter thing that I do at Substack called The Story Student which I try to update every two weeks.

Oh, and sometimes I find myself in the deep intricacies of the web. Just spiraling throughout and trying to see how much I can learn about certain topics in a certain amount of time before I realize that it's pretty late in the night. 😅

Current Book WIP: Conjured Secrets. (SoR Book 1)

The current series that I am writing is the Sorcerer of Runes series, which started out as a game idea in 2021, but has since evolved into a story in 2022 with lots of complexity and other things to know about my characters, the world they like in and the story as a whole.

I try to work on my stories every day, even if it's as little as a few hundred words, I try to make sure to update it day by day, from handwritten to typing and anything you can think of! (Even dictating, but I really do prefer to have that little voice guiding me as I'm typing than for me to speak it out)

Now, for the type of stories that I write, they're very family centric. A lot of the ideas that I am currently writing about also seems to be running along the lines of a fantasy-based world called the Sorcerer of Runes series.

There are four Elemental worlds that would be explored quite a bit throughout the series, but that's not the basis of this series. We start in an unknown land, one where there's a palace with lots of shadows lurking around the place. It explores on the secret alliances on who to trust, while also finding a prophecy of Spirit. One where it proclaims that Light and Dark will be Connected to Spirit for when the time comes. They refer to this, as the end.

This adventure is something that will also be friend focused, yet there's some tension, a hint of romance brewing and lots of layers to this story that will question each of the character's intentions.

If you do want to see how some of my past writing is like, you can check out flufftober 2023 where I have written stories of my characters as a fun yet experimentation thing. I can't say that all of the things on there are accurate, I really did enjoy doing it.

Something you may also notice when you step to the blog and look at my story, is that I really like centering the stories I make on anthropomorphic characters. I guess there's a lot of distinction that you can create with animal characters that… Ok, yes you can do it for people too, I just like animals doing people things and it's something that you don't really see that often, especially considering that cartoons, movies or kiddie books that shows it a lot more, or it's an obscene thing in some literature that I've read… But hey, I also like researching the different kinds of animals too. 😎 Is there a possibility I'd make it on people? Maybe. That's something we'll have to wait and see if it happens another day.

Another thing that I seem to want to do is to make tag games. I'm not too sure if some of the tags that I make exists already, but I do hope that people enjoy it regardless. If I make enough tag games, I'll probably put it as a blog site of its own, but we'll see.

Extra information that I don't really know where to fit it, or it isn't relevant, but decided to put here anyway:

I think I am an INFP, if we are going by cognitive function terms. Especially since I landed that MBTI first before going all around the world, because hey! There's no way I'd be an INFP! Before ending back at it seven years later.

Well this is what I think, but I think I heard at least from a writing workshop that I went to that my mind has so many ideas that I could probably think of ideas for multiple prompts and there'd be lots of interpretations that'll come up. And another thing I notice is that I'm really interactive with people, so I'm probably a self denying ENTP or an ENFP 😂

In fact, I find with my story process, as much as I'd love to write stuff down and explore with how it's written, but there's some points where I am rigid with it until proven otherwise.

I love to see things develop into something better. But sometimes, it's as if the original ideas are better. Though I do like to add stuff that's more current to the character's relationships to each other and the events that they've been through.

Dare I say, this mind set is better than if you have a goal and try to force yourself through it.

Sure, I used to set a high goal, 1000 to 15000 a day. But that may not always be the most realistic thing to do in your life.

I think trying to be consistent with your craft, write however much, whether it is a set goal in mind (that is small) or coming in to your writing session and say that you're going to write for a certain period of time and actually doing it is key.

And coming in with the mindset of XXX amount of words is better than nothing...?

Well that is a lot better than feeling guilty of not following through, and as a result of it, not doing it at all.

If you think what you're writing is above your skill level, do it anyway. You might surprise yourself in what you are able to do, and even if you don't, the experience is worth it. Write, and write, and write some more. You can always re-write it when your skill increases. But your skill level will never increase if you don't challenge yourself and above all else-- write.

Now I've got to say, I love but hate that this has happened.

Casually walking outside , then I think about a scene from current work in progress.

Mind: Hey I have an idea. Let's revisit this topic!

Me:no no! We're not doing this, how can it be possible!

Mind gives plenty of ideas, spanning to future stories which makes it sound plausible, but MAN! It's so evil!

Me: Gosh... Why do I feel like writing about this? Like having these characters in this situation and having the other characters figure it out.

Goes home and writes about all of these ideas, where scenes and situations start to click in my mind and writing structures of the story. Later, late at night, staring at the couple of scenes created.

Me: I guess I am really doing this.

Hi writers, authors and editors!

i've been trying to edit my own book and i have noticed that as i have been slowly reading and editing my book, there are just some scenes that are rather... Annoying.

One of my characters, has a specific dynamic with another characters that just annoys me personally.

This also annoys the protagonist of the story. Yet at the same time, as much as i feel there's a time and a place for arguments. The dynamic between them feels annoying in some scenes. Not in all, but it can depict them both as a bit annoying in my eyes, but the one who starts it as frustrating.

I will say, i feel there's something that doesn't feel right with this dynamic.

Maybe it's a bit much, but if you were to read the two characters, where one usually starts fights with the other character sort of makes me think 'this is happening again.', and the other one, who may start with explaining when he first has the arguments may later be done with it, lash out or even in some aspects may reveal some truths.

Now thinking, i do remember in some games, there is this one character that lots seems to loathe, except maybe a few characters who would enjoy them and...

I want some direction here.

My question to you is: do you think this situation or feeling is ok? Needs to be edited? Could this also be part of the personality and values? Please feel free to share your insights and experiences.

Hey guys.

So there is this thing that I feel like I need to be able to tell you guys about, and this is... I am getting off tumblr for a while.

I know this exit is sudden, and there is always a chance that I will come back to it in the future, but the next time I am on it, it'll probably be not like how it used to be.

Tumblr, when I was first here a few years ago, sending posts, it's been fun to try to experiment around and try to see what would work for me. But I guess I am getting to this period where I am thinking, I need to rethink my strategy. Not just from Tumblr, but from a career, personal and life perspective.

The act of posting now has become monotonous. Part of me wants to be in that space where I can just... Experiment with what I have in my life, while being able to live life to the fullest. I know there are some writers who are able to post plenty of times a day on here, and it amazes me on how they're able to do that for days and weeks on end! I find those sorts of people amazing!

But I know I am not really one of those people. Or I could be if I try, but I guess at this stage of my life, it might not work out. That's maybe why I've quitted a lot of things during this period, because it just feels like some... Obligation that you're stuck to the thing that you are always known for. It bothers me if there could be a personal thing I want to talk about or if I breached out and tried a new way of approaching things just a little bit, it just... Falls. And probably with the thoughts of statistics of likes and reblogs doesn't really help much either.

So I will give myself permission to take a step back for a little while.

Thanks to those who have supported my work so far. I will probably post the personal website when it is ready for more people to see. And I hope to be able to provide greater content in the future in a different format. But for now, I think I need this time to figure out my next steps.

How to Write a Character Who Feels Like Throwing Up

When fear, dread, or guilt gets sickening—literally—your character is consumed with a gut-clenching feeling that something is very, very wrong. Here's how to write that emotion using more than the classic "bile rose to the back of their throat".

Start with the Stomach

This isn’t just about discomfort. It’s about a complete rebellion happening inside their body.

Their stomach twists like a knot that keeps pulling tighter

A cold sweat beads on their neck, their palms, their spine

Their insides feel sludgy, like everything they’ve eaten is suddenly unwelcome

They double over, not from pain, but because sitting still feels impossible

Add Sensory Overload

Vomiting isn’t just a stomach reaction—it’s the whole body.

Their mouth goes dry, and then too wet

Their jaw tightens, trying to contain it

A sudden heat blooms in their chest and face, overwhelming

The back of their throat burns—not bile, but the threat of it

Breathing becomes a conscious effort: in, out, shallow, sharp

Emotional Triggers

Nausea doesn’t always need a physical cause. Tie it to emotion for more impact:

Fear: The kind that’s silent and wide-eyed. They’re frozen, too sick to speak.

Guilt: Their hands are cold, but their face is flushed. Every memory plays like a film reel behind their eyes.

Shock: Something just snapped inside. Their body registered it before their brain did.

Ground It in Action

Don’t just describe the nausea—show them reacting to it.

They press a fist to their mouth, pretending it’s a cough

Their knees weaken, and they lean on a wall, pretending it’s just fatigue

They excuse themselves quietly, then collapse in a bathroom stall

They swallow, again and again, like that’ll keep everything down

Let the Consequences Linger

Even if they don’t actually throw up, the aftermath sticks.

A sour taste that won’t leave their mouth.

A pulsing headache

A body that feels hollowed out, shaky, untrustworthy

The shame of nearly losing control in front of someone else

Let Them Be Human

A character feeling like vomiting is vulnerable. It's real. It’s raw. It means they’re overwhelmed in a way they can’t hide. And that makes them relatable. You don’t need melodrama—you need truth. Capture that moment where the world spins, and they don’t know if it’s panic or flu or fear, but all they want is to get out of their own body for a second.

Don't just write the bile. Write the breakdown.

Writer's Block

You’re staring at the page. The cursor blinks like it’s taunting you. You want to write—hell, you even know what you want to write about—but it’s like your brain’s frozen. That, my friend, is the all-too-familiar little bitch known as writer’s block.

So, how do you fight it?

Here’s what’s helped me, and maybe it'll help you too.

1. Write anything, even if it’s trash

Seriously. Open a doc and let yourself write the worst possible version of what you’re trying to say. No pressure. No editing. You can always clean it up later. A messy first draft is better than no draft.

2. Change your scenery

Sometimes your brain just needs a different view. Go outside. Sit at a café. Write on your phone instead of your laptop. A small change can trick your brain into feeling inspired again.

3. Idea dump

Forget structure. Forget plot. Just go full chaos mode. Rant about your characters, the scene, or how much writing sucks today. That little brain dump might lead you to a breakthrough.

4. Read something short and good

A poem. A Tumblr post. A flash fiction piece. Sometimes reading a spark of good writing reminds your brain how fun words can be.

5. Accept the block, but don’t leave it there

Writer’s block is normal. It doesn’t mean you’re broken. It just means your brain’s buffering. Rest, hydrate, and be gentle with yourself. Then try again.
