DAY #8 - PANCAKES
he ordered the wrong pancake
in kutner's obituary (love that this is not the first time I started a post with this phrasing, by the by), this is said:
"He wanted to be a doctor since seeing 'M.A.S.H.' as a kid", said his close friend and colleague Dr. Chris Taub. "I think he modeled himself a little bit after Hawkeye Pierce."
and I lowkey wanna watch MASH because of that lol
One of the things that bugs me about the earliest Disney princesses all being white is that they didn’t have to be.
There are 354 variants of the Cinderella story - she shows up in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Korea.
Rapunzel has a Persian variant.
Beauty and the Beast has Jamaican, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish and African (they don’t specify more precisely) variants.
The white Disney princesses are white because Disney wanted them to be. It’s got nothing to do with ‘historical accuracy’.
important considering there’s a fair # of people operating under the baffling assumption that because certain fairytales are portrayed in popular films as European, they (or even all fairy tales!) are necessarily “European” in origin
It turns out you can just make? Butter mints?
Thrilling, tbh
Resippy
I know this says stand mixer, but this is very much doable by hand. The dough is roughly the consistency of play dough and can be shaped however you like-- and you can also substitute flavors out, if peppermint isn't to your taste. (Start with a small amount and taste test; some flavors are more overpowering than others.) This is one of very few recipes that's doable even without a proper kitchen, since it doesn't need heat at all. It'll last at room temperature about as long as regular butter will.
I think in the same way there's a 90/10 rule with horror and comedy (horror works best when it's 90% horror and 10% comedy and vice versa) there's a 90/10 rule for some relationships in fiction that's like. Wholesome and fucked up. A good friendship is at its most compelling when it's also 10% a bit fucked up. Fucked up relationship is at its most compelling when there's at least 10% of something actually sweet and substantive within. Do you get me

CHASE/THIRTEEN/CAMERON ("cc13") PROPGANDA:
i kind of think this ship clears up a lot of the problems all three individual ships, and gives each member of it something.
chase is the easiest: cameron and thirteen are also his top 2, he cares about them both a lot and is canonically attracted to them both. we see in both cam/chase and his and 13's friendship that he gets a bit protective and spends a lot of time comforting them, but we also see with thirteen that he has someone he can open up to, someone who "gets" him because they're really quite alike. not that i think cameron wouldn't want to comfort and support him, but chase seems to idealize her a bit and also be afraid of burdening her with his problems. thirteen acts as a good "buffer," someone who Gets chase and can reach out on his behalf; meanwhile cameron is like. his friend. his favorite person. he gets to live out his domestic dreams. chase is also kind of starved for affection, and getting it from twice as many sources???
thirteen has a fear of missing out: she wants to make the most of her life, but also feels obligated to contribute to the world. she's lonely and craves support, but she's also afraid of causing people pain and grief with her death. she's kind of in this constant push-pull, you know? she wants freedom AND support, she hates being told what to do or losing her agency, but also wants relationships. oddly, i think being camchase's "third" would really suit her: she can get her fill of domestic romance but also be free to travel and do her own thing, while knowing that they'll still have one another when she's gone. thirteen really hates being controlled or put in a box, which i think is one of her main potential conflicts with the well-meaning but very bossy/slightly controlling cameron: when they do interact in canon, thirteen is never impressed by cameron's all knowing attitude, and you KNOW the first time thirteen tries to cut her phone lines and bail cameron is going to hold a 5 year grudge. this is where chase is a good buffer: he's easy-going and is very good at talking both women down, and is much less stubborn than them both.
cameron gets to live her horny dreams lmao. no, cameron benefits too! she has so much love to go around, but is also so afraid of commitment and loss and vulnerability: while having two partners doubles this for sure, i also think it has the potential to half those fears for the same reason. if she loses one, she still has the other; if she's freaking out and self-sabotaging, odds are it's not at both. cameron likes to be in control, and i think she might even enjoy the complexity of arranging three schedules and dates; having chase would reduce her dislike of thirteen's rejection of control/refusal to settle down, and chase and thirteen are both rather silly and jokey and cameron tends to get in her own head and Dwell when stressed; i think it's a good balance!
POTENTIAL NEGATIVES:
cameron is going to get VERY WEIRD about the huntington's thing. we see she never handles terminal diagnosis with anything less than a nervous breakdown; i also don't think she'd approve of thirteen's assisted suicide plan (at the last second, sure, but that isn't when 13 wants it). this would always be a ticking bomb for the two of them, since they're both stubborn as all hell, but it's possible chase could mediate this: cameron is afraid of loss, and having chase... doesn't take away from the loss of 13, but at least means she's not totally alone, right?
chase is prone to insecurity where cameron is concerned. i think he'd be very worried that this is all a means for cameron to fall in love with someone else and leave him, whether intentionally or no; i think he'd be a bit reluctant to try this. but i think he benefits from lowkey being both cameron and thirteen's favorites, at least initially: it's his wife and his best friend, right? as long as he can be convinced he matters and is wanted he'll be okay.
thirteen really doesn't like people in her business, struggles to open up and will (and has) cut and run rather than tell people what's going on in her life. while a threesome is fun and sexy, a poly relationship is a big commitment and she's dying and will just hurt them and -- but as i mentioned, i think being the "third" helps potentially mitigate this: it's less pressure if she can come and go as she pleases, be the welcome guest but also have her space and life and know they're doing great without her.
IN CONCLUSION:
this is a great ship thank you
HOW THEY COULD GET TOGETHER:
option a:
cameron, a horny freak, decides to proposition thirteen for a threesome around s5 (before foreteen, obviously). thirteen is probably unimpressed -- sure, just assume the one bi person you know is constantly itching for threesomes with coworkers she doesn't even know -- and it's very up for debate if chase is all that interested. like theoretically? absolutely it would be hot. in practice? is this cameron's way of hinting she doesn't like sex with him. is she going to dump him. what is happening. chase and thirteen end up chatting like "hey sorry my girlfriend was weird" "hey sorry i said no" and oops! they actually get along really well and are immediately friends.
thirteen is still lowkey having her huntington's crash out, and we know she actually is pretty desperate for stability and support even if she also keeps rejecting it. she starts kind of attaching herself to cameron-and-chase, almost admiring them and their perceived stability and normalcy and they're going to get married and have three kids and no one is going to die young. she and cameron probably butt heads a few times because cameron is just itching to take control and manage the huntington's thing, but they get it settled. after a few months the threesome does happen, and it actually is great for everyone. so they do it again. and they're all great pals. cameron and chase formally invite thirteen to be part of their relationship -- there's a card and a cake it's so cheesy -- and that's it! thirteen gets stability, and when saviors rolls around is able to help talk cameron down (cameron is avoiding them both, but chase especially). cameron and chase get married and eventually buy thirteen like, a promise ring, not really an engagement ring; she doesn't really want to "permanently" join or get fake married, but it's a symbol of her belonging and being part of the family. they eventually move into a bigger house; thirteen has her own room and they all swap around.
option b:
dibala still happens etc. chase and thirteen become friends in s6 as in canon; we know that by s7 chase at least is Interested in her, so we just speed that up a bit. it's made clear he's not really ready to date yet/not over cameron, but he and thirteen are Interested and just not ready to make the leap.
cameron comes back in lockdown, and things go differently; not much actually changes but she and chase don't actually sign the divorce papers or do but stay in closer contact; they admit they want to be together but are afraid of failing and try to work it out. what follows is a sad little love triangle where everyone cares about one another and doesn't want to get in the way of anyone else: chase does have feelings for thirteen but wants cameron too, neither woman wants to interfere with the other, cameron and thirteen are almost competing like "no YOU should date him, i'm dying/i left him once already." cameron and thirteen actually bond and become friends, at first over their mutual concern for chase's crashout and then more broadly about their similar-but-very-different fears of commitment and vulnerability.
however it's now s7, and this could change things drastically for thirteen: i think she's still going to want to help end her brother's life, but does she manage it so secretly? we know how chase feels as her FRIEND, AFTER the fact; if they're in an almost-relationship and she's already up to date on dibala, does he help her? help cover it up? what does cameron do if she's in the same situation she left chase for, barely a year later? in a weird way, i think this could be the event that pulls the three of them together, cameron understanding and wanting to do things differently; chase eager to support thirteen because he gets how this fucks with a person, thirteen no longer quite so isolated and searching for punishment. rather than the super domestic fluff of scenario a, i think this version is a bit sadder; they're all more hurt and wary, but it might bring them closer.
cc13 <3
i do want you all to know that i'm still 100% camchase until i die i just
i get a kick out of the idea of chase being bullied by cameron and thirteen. he'd be so happy.......and foreman would be so sad...................
doing my damnedest to free myself of the “just gotta get through this week” “only x more days til the weekend” mindset & learn to appreciate each day for whatever it is lest i be driven to madness
so what if tomorrows monday i have leftovers & maybe this week i will make soup. maybe ill see a cat. maybe each day will show me something worthwhile even if im tired & maybe i can enjoy it
if u are negative on this post im blocking u ! some of us are trying to get better
i actually kind of think people forget that the diagnostics fellowship is a fellowship. it's a training program. the show makes a big fuss about house "needing a team," about how it's a "team," but.
the path to being a doctor is:
UNDERGRAD
normal university education, either as a pre-med or some other degree. typically four years. there are ways to skip this step and go straight to med school, particularly in other countries -- chase's age-to-specialty ratio is often handwaved with this -- but it's Very Unusual and as far as we're aware, none of the characters have done so: we know house, wilson, cuddy, and foreman did not.
MEDICAL SCHOOL
four years of medical school, complete with licensing exams. masters, when we meet her, is in her final year of med school.
INTERNSHIP/RESIDENCY
after med school, you start specialty training. masters is a good example here, as the show spends some time on her trying to decide what she wants that specialty to be. house goes so far as to create an internship spot in diagnostics for her, but she is also interested in surgery.
an intern is a first-year resident.
the length of your residency will vary depending on specialty. park, when we meet her, is a neurology resident; she hasn't quite completed her training yet, and is only shunted off to house due to her unusual (read: she was assaulted by her boss) circumstances.
once you complete your residency, you're done! you're a real doctor with a real specialty and can go forth and do doctor stuff! HOWEVER:
FELLOWSHIP
if you want additional training or specialization, you might sign up for a fellowship program. you already have a specialty, but you wanna really hone in. say you're a pediatrician, but you want to specifically learn how to treat kidney ailments in the young. fellowship!
to use cameron as an example: she completed university, and then med school. her residency was in internal medicine, at which point she was a Real Doctor, but she then would have taken a two year fellowship program to specialize as an immunologist. all before joining up with house.
Princeton-Plainsboro is very specifically a teaching hospital, meaning that it is a place filled to the brim with students of all levels, undertaking all this training.
DIAGNOSTICS
off the bat, there is no such thing as a "diagnostics" subspecialty. of course diagnostics is a thing in medicine, there are diagnostic textbooks and guides, it's just not a specialty in itself. everyone is, in theory, supposed to be able to do this. the show lampshades this here and there and admits it's more or less a field created by house, for house.
in season one, house mentions that his department is a two year program; you finish your training and move on. obviously this didn't quite pan out. it seems like the show quietly bumped this up to three years by season three (there are interviews justifying the mass exodus of human error with "it's a training program and they all should have been moving on anyway"), although even then, chase had been there for four years by the time he was fired, so... house does still reference it as a temporary program, though. at least in early seasons. it's not supposed to be your career in itself.
the pay is bad!! characters reference this multiple times!! the average 2025 pay for a fellowship salary is $48k, or about $23 an hour. that is not a lot. you can live off it but you are not rolling in money, and we know that house's fellowship doesn't pay a lot as it is brought up repeatedly that everyone is broke as shit. this is a training program. you're not in it for the money.
it is pretty strongly stated that if you graduate house's fellowship, you have a blank check to work anywhere you want: it's incredibly prestigious. we see cameron almost immediately becomes a department head; in s8 treiber complains that chase wasted his life and could have gone anywhere he wanted and been wildly successful after house's program; foreman, when he briefly leaves, is given his own department and offered another. this is probably one of the reasons so many people apply and will fight to get into the program: house really does churn out incredibly skilled doctors.
#never ask: men their salary women their age & the house md writers if their timeline is accurate to this LMAO#house md
don't get me started DON'T GET ME STARTED
at a minimum, minimum, no one on the team should be younger than 30. cameron has one of the most straightforward specialty paths of the group and it should be something like 18-22: undergrad, 22-26: med school, 26-29: internal medicine residency, 29-31: immunology fellowship.
jennifer morrison was 25 in s1.
chase's surgery residency should have been a minimum of five years, plus fellowship, plus intensivist fellowship. foreman's neurology residency of 4 years works with his actor's age of 31 in s1... but only if he hasn't done another fellowship yet. kutner is somehow 28 when he dies: if he came to diagnostics straight after his residency, maybe? but wait, he's meant to have done a fellowship too. 13 says she is not older than 27 in s4. how. adams hasn't just finished all her training but has been working in the prison system for however many years, and her actor was 28! cuddy apparently finished all her training and was running an entire hospital in 5 years! everyone is too youngggggggggggggggg
