In With the New: Tarot Spreads for the New Year

by Keziah With the passing of each new year, many people turn to divination to see what the coming year has in store for them. The Gregorian New Year is upon us and now is the perfect time to look toward the year to come. These tarot spreads are intended to reflect on the year now behind us and the year to come ahead of us. In this piece, you’ll find six spreads in total, each easily customizable to meet your unique needs – two versions of an Out With the Old, In With the New spread, a 12-Month Tarot Spread, two versions of a 6-Month Tarot Spread, and the Wheel of the Year Spread, each offering a glimpse into the year to come in their own special way.

Out With the Old, In With the New

Version 1:

You are a person who covers your counter space in clutter and inadvertently makes a shrine to a long forgotten god who shows up to thank you.

The pepper grinder is small and copper with a brass knob at the top that allows you to hand-turn the grinder. You’re never sure where you picked it up – it’s not a gift or a purchase, otherwise you’d have the saltshaker to match – but it feels right sitting next to your fruit bowl. Logically, it should go by your stove where the rest of your spices have congregated in a misshapen mob, getting stained by Bolognese and fry oil. However, your fruit bowl is a stoneware behemoth you found in the crawlspace under the house, and the shine of the copper next to the earthen tone reminds you of spending long hours excavating in the Italian countryside as an archeology sophomore in college (about two years before you became an English major), so it stays.

Then, of course, you’re too busy to eat fruit before it rots and the bowl sits empty- barring a lemon or lime here or there-  and that’s no good either because it takes up over half of the counter to the right of your sink and backs up against the blank wall at the end of your galley kitchen where you can’t hang anything because both the fridge door and the pantry door swing into it.

So when your mother gives you another worry stone for your birthday – rose quartz this time, which means she thinks if you’re not worried about being single in your 30s, you should be – you hold it while staring out the kitchen window, drinking coffee over the sink, and when you finish the last sip full of grounds you toss the mug in the sink and the rose quartz in the bowl. It clinks loudly and then settles between those two lemons that you need to find a use for before the weekend, lest they go hard and unusable except for cleaning your sink.

After that, belated birthday wishes show up in the mail, and you can’t bring yourself to throw them out. Your Aunt Sylvia sends a postcard from Peru that she’s been holding onto for “a special occasion” for the last five years and, -aren’t you lucky?- you’re the special winner of a National Geographic photo of Machu Picchu. And you’re not a monster. The card may not hold the same significance to you as it did to her, but the thought does and so tucked between the bowl and the wall it goes where the very tippy top of the ruins rise over the brown rim, as if from the depths of a valley.

Then your college roommate (the archaeology one who made you want to do the study abroad program in the first place), Audra, sends you a shard of Roman pottery and a note in Latin that you can’t read but understand perfectly by the coffee stains littering the edge of it. The sight of the coffee stains warms your heart more than the pottery shard, so both go in the bowl where you can occasionally glance at them as you drink your own coffee over the sink and reminisce over study dates and the few regular dates you shared before her passion stole her abroad.

(And if the clay and the rose quartz lie next to each other and you suddenly think of marriage and nostalgia and her stoneware eyes that led you to save the same-colored fruit bowl from the depths of your house in the first place, it’s a natural series of associations and doesn’t prove your mother right at all.)

The driftwood isn’t from anyone. Your agent calls to tell you that you won an award for one of your books. The driftwood is in your hand, scavenged along the Potomac from amidst the pebbles deposited by the last storm, and it’s suddenly your only tether to reality as she explains what this means. It means reviews and author readings and an interview - of you! – and a guaranteed sequel. The stick is smooth under your fingertips and you wave it in the air is if it’s a wand in an attempt to burst your bubble.

Only you’re home the next moment and you’ve still got the driftwood in your hand and your bubble is unburst. It feels significant that you brought it back with you so you put it across the top of your fruit bowl as if it’s the award itself. You have a decaf coffee to celebrate that evening and see that stick guarding your rose quartz and your pepper grinder and your pottery shard and you think, I’m doing okay. And the joy you feel from that is so powerful that your next thought is, I’m happy.

Which is, of course, when the power goes out.

Outages happen all the time in a block as old as yours. Before, you’d see it as free time and go lay down in bed and wait for the world to relight or for morning to come. But you don’t have time now. Your agent is planning to call you soon. You are an award-winning author and you have things to do before your 42% battery runs out.

You make your kitchen your base and set the six pillar candles on your counter, lighting them one by one. They’re the rainbow ones from last June your mother bought you in a sweet yet confusing show of support and you’ve never found a special enough occasion to burn them. You smile at Machu Picchu peaking over your fruit bowl. Your aunt is the one who taught you about special things.

Then your agent calls and, while you’re hammering out the details, you see that the candles are about to drip colored wax onto your white, plastic countertops and even though you really want to replace them, you can’t afford to (at least until you sign a contract). You snatch up your driftwood and use it to scoop the wax from the sides until a kaleidoscope of color is collected and you have to keep spinning it to keep it from dripping.

You blow on the hot wax, thinking of Audra and your family and the future your agent is painting for you until it cools. Then you place the driftwood over the bowl where it belongs.

 It’s just a bowl. Of course, it’s just a bowl. It does a good job of taking up a huge amount of your counter and of holding onto things you’d forget in a junk drawer. It looks good in the candlelight, warm and earthy and welcoming with the three bright lemons scattering amongst your treasures. It’s nice to see reminders of your loved ones every morning from the summit of Machu Picchu to your worry stone to that shard of pottery, but it’s not anything more.

At least it’s not until you put your driftwood, wax-covered wand back and think, I wish I could see her.

The flames of the candles sputter and turn gold, radiating a pure and steady light that could never come from a mundane fire. Your agent stops herself midsentence, apologizes, promises to call you back when she has a better connection, and hangs up. The bowl rattles and shivers and you take a step back as your copper pepper grinder tips over. You must not have put it together correctly because it spills when it does, little peppercorns that roll across your counter towards the edge.

You expect to hear the dried pepper hit the ground, but it doesn’t.  Each peppercorn stops unnaturally.

What?

The candles splutter and return to normal flame. Your bowl is still. The lemons seem less appetizing than they had a moment ago, but your treasures are still there and lovely.

You pick up your Roman shard.

Your phone rings. Audra. Although you can’t imagine talking to anyone after what you’ve just witness, your body isn’t on the same page. Muscle memory and association has you answering before the second ring.

“Mal, I got the job!”

“…The job?”

“Oh, I didn’t tell you. Not because I was hiding it! But nobody ever gets it and I didn’t want you to get your hopes up and then my hopes up—”

Her rapid-fire word is grounding. You laugh. “Because my hopes are your hopes.”

“Obviously,” she says. She takes a deep breath. “I got the Smithsonian. The curator role. The job.”

She’s coming home. The realization hits like electricity, raising all the hair on your arms and almost making you drop the shard. You blink quickly to stop the automatic tears.

“Mal?”

“I’m here,” you say. You go to put the pottery shard back with more care than you ever have, as if it’s Audra herself. She can probably hear the way your voice trembles, but you can’t compose yourself. “Oh, I’m so happy. When?”

“In a month. I have to hand over some current projects, which should only take a week, but finding someone to take over my classes might take a little longer, but not too long! I promise. After that it’s packing—”

You put the pottery shard back in the bowl as gently as you ever have. Audra’s voice is the sweetest music as she says goodbye, in a hurry to start packing. You hear that music long after she hangs up. Your knees are weak. She’s coming home. She’s coming home. Thank whatever god, she’s coming home—

Your fingers touch something coarse and feather-light. Your brow furrows as you pull a scrap of ancient paper from the fruit bowl.

“Oh,” you breathe.

The lights flare as the power returns.

So, every Winter Solstice, I do a simmer pot to enliven my space, cleanse the air, and enhance happiness and luck for the coldest months of the year. It's also a solid offering to my spirits, giving them a nice boost of energy at this time of year.

I always try to make the simmer pot edible also. I like to be able to drink the results!

This year, I'm switching things up a little bit. I'm gonna be experimenting with ingredients I don't usually use to see how it goes! I'm also doing this in the morning instead of in the afternoon to make more time for feast preparations!

Here's what I'm putting in my pot and what it's for:

Enough water to float everything safely, adding more as it evaporates throughout the morning

Sliced apples - Love, happiness, luck

Sliced oranges - Happiness, sun energy

Lemon juice - Cleansing, joy, sun energy

Cranberries - Health, protection from illness and misfortune

Cinnamon sticks - Happiness, fire energy, wealth

Cloves - Warmth, fire energy, luck, protection from misfortune

Brown sugar - Sweetness, happiness, love

If I wasn't planning on drinking some of this, I'd include pine needles -- I don't love the taste, and I want to enjoy this!

The idea is to fill a pot with water and gently add all the ingredients. Then, bring it up to heat and let it simmer on low heat for as long as I like, adding water as it evaporates. Once it's nice and steamy, I'll take a cup of it and carry it around my apartment to flick small amounts of fragrant water here and there.

And even if it's cold, I'll open up the windows for a few minutes to let the air flow. It's so important to keep air moving in the winter; otherwise, it gets stagnant and stale, and it makes me feel worse.

I don't usually, but I think this year, I'll also use it as a wash for my front door. We could definitely use a boost in luck and protection and joy for next year!

Different types of water and their magickal uses:

Sea water: good for curse/hex breaking, cleansing, healing, banishing and protection spells.

Dew water: beauty, love and fertility spells, as well as delicate magick. Also Good for Fae work.

Storm water: is great for spells and rituals that has to do with emotional strength, confidence, charge, motivation and force. It’s known for strengthening spells. Also good for curses.

Snow water: Spells and rituals that focus on purity, endings and change, as well as slow working spells.

River water: Good for creating changes, moving on and letting go of negativity, warding and focusing energy.

Rain water: Very multi-purpose, but specifically great for growth and rebirth spells. Great for spells that you want to keep gaining power over time.

Spring water: Growth, holy water, cleansing, protection, prosperity

Moon water: Depending on the moon phase it was created in, it can have different properties.

Sun Water: protection, healing, clairvoyance, courage, strength, prosperity, luck, self-love, cleansing and creativity.

Swamp Water: Used for banishing and binding.

🌑 Manifestation Spell 🌑

A spell to manifest something into your life, to be performed under the new moon.

You will need :

🌑 Jar or other container 🌑 Water 🌑 Black food colouring (or any colour you associate with nothingness) 🌑 Square white paper (or any colour you associate with existence) 🌑 A new moon

What to do :

🌑Fill your jar with water. 🌑Write down on the paper what you’re trying to manifest, and then fold it into an origami shape. It doesn’t have to be overly complex, it just has to be something other than a square. It helps if there’s a correspondence between what you’re manifesting and the shape you fold your paper into. 🌑Put the folded paper into the water and then add your food colouring. 🌑Leave the jar with the water and paper in it outside to charge in the new moon’s moonlight. 🌑 In the morning, take the jar back inside and keep it somewhere it won’t be touched by moonlight from other lunar phases. The universe will start aiding you in the manifestation now.

As the paper disintegrates, your desire will be in the process of manifesting. Once your paper is nearly gone, your desire will have completely or almost completely manifested, as long as you’ve followed the correct path during this to make it happen.

I like this spell. I think I would do a couple of things differently and depending on how you feel, it may seem like I’m changing the whole thing.

I would use a coffee filter and write on that. Or maybe a paper towel. Something that would not interfere with a growing plant.

Then I would wrap that around a seed (probably a big one, like a pumpkin seed or a sunflower seed) and plant that. Doing this as origami still works and I like that symbolism. Like, if you were going for a house, you could fold an origami pagoda and nestle the seed in the heart of the “house.”

In tending the seed, it will sprout and absorb the words from the coffee filter. As the plant strengthens, so does whatever the spell is supposed to do (like, whatever you “assigned” to it).

I guess I did change a bunch of this. For me, growing something works better than having it dissolve into a jar of “nothing.” And I don’t mind working by moon phases (I do think a new moon makes sense for beginning something that you want to “grow”) but the new moon doesn’t give off much light, so I don’t know if I would feel like I needed to expose it to that or protect it from other moon phases.

It probably wouldn’t matter for me personally, because when I start seeds it’s often in a pot, indoors, with a heating mat and grow lights. The moon doesn’t reach the plants there. Maybe I would let the freshly planted pot sit outside overnight just to get things started, as long as it wasn’t bad weather or too cold for the seed (though some of them do like cold stratification).

Am I saying you can put a spell into that pair of socks you're knitting? That scarf you've been working on? That pile of granny squares waiting to become a blanket? That cross-stitch piece you've been meaning to finish?

(And lots more downloadable patterns exist on etsy and fibre arts forums!) Perfect for chilling with your favorite hot beverage and current binge-watch while you keep your hands from getting bored.

Celebrating the New Year

While those who follow the Wheel of the Year typically celebrate "The Witches' New Year" during Samhain, I wanted to throw together this presentation/event to give us all some ideas as we head into 2024!

SPELL & RITUAL IDEAS

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

Deep clean your home, taking specific care to sweep dust/debris out of your front and back door. Even better if you move in a counterclockwise fashion throughout your home to banish any negative energies that may be lingering! To bring in “new” ideas, hang up new decorations that align with your new year goals, or add specific herbs that align with your intentions to window sills and the top of door frames. It’s also a great time to refresh any wards or protection symbols you might have around your house!

2024 CHARM BAG

Pull together a few objects that symbolize your new year: sigils, charms, herbs, etc. and throw them together in a charm bag. Keep this bag on your person when the clock strikes 12am! Keep it stashed away, and pull it out whenever you feel the need to have some of that energy with you throughout the new year.

MANIFESTATIONS

Utilize your favorite manifestation methods to bring your goals to fruition! My personal favorites include writing my “wishes” (or goals) on a bay leaf and burning it. However you prefer to manifest certain goals, new years is a great time to do so.

MAKING “NORMAL CELEBRATIONS” MORE WITCHY

If you are going to be around family or friends for new years, there are a handful of things you can make it a bit more witchy for yourself! For example: if you are drinking, don’t forget to pour out a small offering for your deities/God(s). If you have someone to kiss at midnight, and they consent to doing so, perhaps you could both perform some kind of ritual that involves the kiss “activating” the spell – for example, perform a “good luck” working for the new year, and involve the kiss as a part of the ritual!

Taurus rising and their angular houses 💘💌

Angular houses are the most important in an astrological chart. It represents our fundamental core selves, the parts in which we work with consistently in life, and what we value the most. Angular houses show huge change and how it plays a role in our life 💌 often deals with external change impacting us and our growth!

Taurus rising ♉️- Taurus rising, ruled by venus and the luxuries 💘🤗 not always is this native born under luxury however. Depending on where Venus is, and if it’s afflicted, or if this house is afflicted it can produce different results in the natives life. Most taurus risings understand their life did not come to them easily. In this lifetime, apart of them knew they wanted to live comfortably, and securely, and create that security for others. They may not have realized it as they were younger, but the more they grow up, the more they understand the lifestyle they want. Most taurus risings know they want luxury and work hard for it, and others know they want a simple life, and still want to generate enough security to thrive. Even if they do not show it physically, through dressing up and buying a huge house, Taurus risings do understand the simplicity of life and want that. A lot of taurus risings are generous, kind, patient, and value security. And they value connections that grow securely, and strong foundations. Leo fourth house ♌️- Taurus rising grew up around a prideful, happy and boisterous family. If the taurus rising grew up financially secure, family loved to buy each other gifts and spend on one another as a way of love. (Taurus rising developed gift giving regardless of their financial status) But their family has a huge part in why they develop their finances. Leo ruled by the sun, the Father could have been a teacher for the taurus rising. The Father was the leading point in the taurus risings life, and could have been a proud one, a purposeful and meaningful father and strong. Independent, confident, and assured. The downside, the Father could have been arrogant, self centered, self loathed and expected the taurus rising child to constantly be there for him ❤️‍🩹 the Father needed attention from the child instead of the Father giving attention to the child. The taurus rising native as a child was warm, loving, generous, and the type to still find little gifts for everyone and share it. The show stopper, and had a lot of attention on them, whether that was through a supportive family dynamic or not. If it was not supportive, as the taurus rising child grew up, too many people gossiped, and tried to one up, or selfishly wanted their attention. If it was supportive, the taurus rising found themselves being loved, cared for, and people celebrated them and their milestones 💘🤗 the mother could have been emotionally affectionate, nurturing and been a solid friend to the taurus rising child. If not, the mother was bossy, self centered, and focused on getting the limelight as opposed to her child. The native probably witnessed family arguments often, and the parents encouraged the idea of “competition” in the family. So the taurus rising child could have been encouraged to do better than their siblings, cousins, etc.

Scorpio ruled 7th house, descendant♏️- The taurus rising native experienced a lot of loss, greif, and transformation in relationships and connections. Jealousy, insecurity from others tried to get in the way of taurus risings relationships. The native self sabotaged in return, thinking it was their fault the people around them could not show up ❤️‍🩹 as they grow older, they realize transformation is vital to a peaceful life. Not necessarily traumatizing all of the time, but change does not need to be the end. Releasing is the key to freedom. Liberation is the start to self forgiveness and peace. Through others, the taurus rising finds themselves. Through others, the taurus rising does shadow work with, and each of their relationships have never been the same. Each have their own story, and path. The taurus rising tries to put up walls with others to stay safe, because too many people have come in and tried to project unfairly. And have done unjust things to the taurus rising native. Time and time again, the native transforms in love, opening up and closing off. At some point, the taurus rising native wants someone to grow with, but also transform too. To stay comfortable, yet do the inner work to heal ❤️‍🩹🤝 to have a partner that stays regardless of fear and doubt, and does their work too. Very loyal and determined lovers, and they go all of the way if they are healed 🙌💘 when they know they are capable, they will pursue. These natives may not have a lot of people in their life, because they later realize the value of privacy, and how moving in silence is the way to go. After their Leo ruled 4th house, they transition to a period of intense transformation, inner work, and liberation to find their truth of how they want to move forward in life. Privacy, sanctuary, and alone time is necessary 🙌

Aquarius ruled 10th house ♒️- After a period of isolation and many cycles of loss, trial and tribulations, their idea of who they want to be in their career path is not exactly set in stone, but they know how they want to move. Undefined, yet unique and knowledgeable in what they know, and intelligent. Taurus risings have a hold on the masses because they are authentically themselves, people see them as either nonchalant, aloof, or monotone. But Taurus risings have seen it all for themselves, and know thats not the only truth there is to them. And neither is it the entirety. They may pursue business solo, open their own shop, and find it easier to set their own rules. They want to be their own leader and boss, and don’t mind trying something new 💘🤗 it may take them many tries to figure out what career path they want, but they allow the experience to unfold. Many people see them as “unmatched” and may try to compete, but taurus risings know all to well where competition leads, and want nothing to do with it. They continue to move forward and stay in their lane. They may go on to pursue a career path no one in their family has done, and receive criticism for it, but once a taurus rising knows their truth it cant be shaken 💅🏻 they are not necessarily rebellious in career, but have an informed perspective, and speak their truth which is not the same as being rebellious! They prefer to keep their career private, money private. Sometimes in career they will be put in situations where they receive the limelight and they feel boxed in due to their past, but when they move forward they can learn to accept it and understand there are people who want to support them too. Career paths: web developer, social worker, scientist, entrepreneur, human rights activist.
