that the same people who have either ignored, denied, excused, or promoted 6 years of arbitrary arrests, torture camps, mass rapes, barrel bombings, scud missiles, chemical weapons, starvation sieges, forceful displacement, and old fashioned massacres against the syrian people are acting as though they are so upset and against violence now makes me physically ill. where were all of these anti-war protests being formed in response to a one-off airstrike as hundreds of syrians were murdered by unauthorized US airstrikes just last month? where were all of these calls for foreign powers out of syria when the same people were either silent on russia’s burning of halab or labeled it a “liberation”? the hundreds of thousands of airstrikes deployed against civilians by the assad regime over 6 years weren’t enough to cause these people to delve into their passionate speeches about syrians’ right to life and freedom? why are cries against violence in syria only ever prompted when it seems the regime is hurt? of course, that is a rhetorical question. anti-militarism only applies in syria when it might hurt the regime. this airstrike did essentially nothing, it won’t be followed through on, assad’s warplanes departed from the same airport today to drop more bombs on civilians. will any of these so-called anti-war protests address those lives lost? or is it only the life of the beloved regime which matters? screw foreign bombs, especially american bombs, but screw crocodile tears as well. trump literally campaigned on “bombing the hell” out of syria, but that he was actually doing so and sacrificing innocent civilian lives in the process didn’t matter to anybody until he slapped bashar on the wrist. this pro-war “anti-war” sentiment that always comes out to pity and pet bashar but stays eternally silent on his victims is the most disgustingly transparent thing i have ever witnessed. being “anti-war” means opposing all militarism, not just that which scores you some geopolitical cool points.
