MAKING A LOW AERIAL (PROMO) VIDEO WITHOUT A DRONE!

Drones have become a great asset for viewing sports and sports related products from a different perspective (and fun to have), but they do have their limitations!  We wanted to show our trim tab product up close in action while coming down from an aerial view of the boat, a classic move, although nearly impossible to accomplish with the motion between the drone and boat with the wind and waves.  We decided that a hard mechanical connection between the boat and camera was necessary, and that a rotating custom (reversed) camera jib boom with a light GoPro camera could work without looking too conspicuous mounted on the center console of the boat.  We put the rig together and calibrated it on land for close ups and knew that the camera’s wide angle lens would give the higher aerial view an allusion of additional height, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much.  We were ready to go!  On a nice clear and windy day we started filming along the coast, with the device being operated from the helm the best panning angles were marked off while occasionally looking at the camera’s location, after various test runs we called it a day.  Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate for several weeks with fog along the coast, but after looking at the raw test video we determined that sections were good enough for a YouTube video before the Summer was over.  Jib booms are relatively inexpensive and used for a lot of filming applications and specific one’s like ours, but drones are generally more suited for unrestricted sports applications.  Our next theme oriented video will include high aerial drone footage and the jib boom’s console mount will be concealed as a fishing rod/holder and it’s shadow hidden by the boats orientation to the Sun.  We welcome any questions, comments or suggestion on this in-house amateur video.
