It saddens me how often I can barely distinguish between a George fan account and a hating one, here and on other social media. Everyone's in the business of underrating him and downplaying his importance to his team.
Everyone agrees that Toto wants the "prodigy" driver pairing, so he's trying to get rid of George. Everyone takes as a given that if George doesn't win the WDC this year, that means Kimi has surpassed him, and he'll never get another chance â he'll be Ricciardoed, if you will.
I have to wonder, why are you a George fan if you think so little of him? If you underestimate his talent to the point of assuming he's replaceable? If you depreciate his personality to the point of believing his team dislikes him? If you undervalue his standing in the sport to the point of imagining he'll be dropped to the midfield or even out of F1? If you pay no attention to his words? If you doubt his ability to win the WDC when the circumstances are challenging?
Max and Lewis's fans (I guess we can add Alonso's here too) simultaneously amuse me and annoy me with how fervently they believe their driver is the best to ever walk on earth. But even if I find them quite silly, I also envy their unwavering trust, their unabashed support. Meanwhile, we are so timid and hesitant.
I'm not trying to tell other fans what they should think or how they ought to behave. Being a fan is an emotional and ultimately personal experience. We're in a public space, and everybody here has the right to feel what they feel and express whatever they want.
But this is my personal and emotional experience as a GR fan: I wish that when I browse the george russell tags, I could find more recognition of his skills, more praise of his character, more (substantiated) defending against criticism of his performance, and more advocating of his future WDCs. Just a lot more glazing, really.
And I wish I didn't have to check so frequently to see if I haven't accidentally unblocked the anti george russell tag.
ummm i saw this one idea on tiktokâŠ.
Thoughts on Italian media saying George William Russell is the most evilest to ever evil in the entirety of evil
i don't really take 'Italy' seriously as a concept
omg the LORD
i think peopleâs issue with george is that heâs not aggressive enough, not âgoodâ enough, he follows the rules and that he usually knows better than kimi, marcus dudley and his own engineers.
whenever he keeps the setup his engineers give him, he comes 4th-6th, and whenever he has his own setup, he comes p1-p2. his own engineers fuck up his car and donât seem to take accountability. george doesnât take accountability because nothing that goes wrong his ever his fault. and fans hate that.
fans of other drives hate that they canât blame george. they hate that they canât give another reason as to why they hate him.
he went a whole season without a dnf, and his first dnf since 2024 was in canada. which, as we know, was a PU failure. he led that entire race, while kimi went off track every four turns.
people hate that he is better then kimi. sure, kimi wins more, but george has better podium stats. when kimi doesnât win, heâs either out of the points or p3. whenever george doesnât win, heâs on the podium or in the points.
if we genuinely look at his and kimiâs last races & the publicâs reaction, itâs very obvious who the fans and the team prefer.
melbourne, george won and got hate for it. kimi came p2 and everybody cheered because it was his second year and he got a podium.
china, kimi won and everybody loved him. understandable, it was his first win. good for him. george had a car failure and came p2.
japan, kimi won again and he was called the new senna. george had yet another car issue and still came p4 with a car that barely worked.
miami, kimi won once again and everybody said he was easily the best on the grid. george had a car issue AGAIN, his peddles were too far back, and he still finished 4th.
canada, kimi won again and everybody called george washed. george led the entire weekend. pole in sprint qual, p1 in sprint, pole in qualifying and p1 the majority of the race, until he had a PU failure.
monaco, kimi won again and everybody said heâd be world champion at the end of the season. georgeâs team didnât tell him if heâd served his penalty, they didnât tell him if he needed to pit, they didnât tell him anything. he dropped from p3 to p14 because of his team.
barcelona, lewis won and everybody loved him. george came p2, because his team fucked up and his car couldnât turn properly. he was once again called washed for coming p2. kimi dnfed.
austria. george won, and everybody called him a cheat. they said it was unfair that he won and that charles deserved it. just because he lifted during a single yellow in qualifying. kimi finished p3 after breaking track limits 7 times,
silverstone. charles won and everybody praised him. george came p2 even with a fucked up car. kimi drove over a kerb and ruined his car and ignored his engineer, who was yelling at him to come in. he could not control the car properly, people argued he shouldnât have gotten the penalty for track limits. he wouldâve never gotten the penalty if heâd come in, the car was unsafe to drive. he couldnât control it around kerbs, so he wouldnât have able to control around another driver.
when kimi loses, his team is blamed, bad luck is blamed, his age is an excuse, he is babied and forgiven, even when it is his own fault.
when george loses, he is blamed, his âdivanessâ is blamed, his emotions are blamed. he is criticised and hated no matter what he does, no matter whoâs mistake it is.
george russell will always be blamed, hated ridiculed and called nicknames like âgeorginaâ âprincess georgeâ âdivaâ âprissyâ.
he is not an aggressive driver, he never has been, because he doesnât need to be. he doesnât need to be desperate and violent to win.
kimi is not prepared for the feeling of falling behind because of how toto taught him. when he loses, he yells and insults people. he gets desperate and tries incredibly hard to seem better than he is. he ignores his teams orders and drives recklessly to get one point instead of retiring and getting on with his weekend.
that is why people hate george russell.
because he is more calm and collected than their favourite drivers.
because he can win without calling his teammate or opponent a fucking idiot.
because he can drive without being aggressive.
because george can drive safely with a fucked up car.
because they donât like his attitude.
because he is more likely to become a world champion than charles leclerc and kimi antonelli are.
turns that six feet tall man pocketsized
thereâs something so sinister about the way toto has been undermining george. saying that george didnât have pace in spain and then it came out his front wing was maladjusted. and then shutting down george saying the car didnât have speed in silverstone when marcus confirmed during the race it didnât have speed, only to come out for days later in a magazine interview admitting that george did have speed loss.
downplaying georgeâs car problems during race weekends and then meekly admitting to it afterwards when you know 90% or the fans are only paying attention during race weekends. making george feel like heâs not doing good enough and then turning around talking about how george is âso resilient.â
meanwhile, kimi has one single issue and the whole house has to stop to accommodate him. kimi was driving so erratically he gave himself a penalty and the narrative is poor uwu bebezito pls penalties are soooo unfair. âhow was kimi supposed to know heâs supposed to lift during single flagâ đ„ș as if he isnât a professional f1 driver. literally grooming kimi into becoming an entitled whiny little baby while simultaneously shitting on george. toto wolff you WILL go to hell.
Mussonelli wasn't even unlucky in Silverstone. He started on pole ffs. If he didn't fumble his start it would've been an easy win. But he did, couldn't catch Charles on mediums and then had to drive agressively through the kerbs which eventually damaged the car. If that was George everybody would be screaming how he brought it on himself and couldn't catch Ferrari in his rocketship.
Clock. Just gonna put it here.
thinking about younger george who's silly and awkward and nervous in front of an audience and not yet learned how to conduct himself to the media in the way he does today, thinking about george who has been humbled and ganged up on by the press, thinking about george who tries to advocate for the drivers and make sure his words are rehearsed and put together but everyone makes fun of him for it, thinking about george who is still silly and awkward but because he has a stereotypical accent he gets branded arrogant and stuck up, thinking about george who is the most misunderstood driver of all time
Austrian Grand Prix 2024
it was a good shout to do this podcast and explain more of the behind the scenes, so people understand how it works and see their relationship⊠what was not a good shout is to be condescending to fans in the same breathđ
Bit of a rant incoming but Iâve been struggling to put this to words
The problem Mercedes have had in the past couple months is theyâve hit an unstoppable force (fan frustration at their behaviour) and decided to be an immovable object (refuse to accept their view and thus do anything to change their behaviour), an insane stance when anyone who watched the McLaren debacle from last year would know it doesnât work.
The frustration Mercedes has, is to them, theyâve done nothing wrong. And itâs logically, itâs likely true, favouring a driver does them almost no favours, and teams donât make mistakes on purpose because it costs them money. If youâre Bradley Lord, deputy team boss, you cannot fathom people thinking you would willingly lose the chance at the constructors prize at the end of the year. Mercedes LOVES money. Theyâve also cultured George for years, and there IS a lot going on behind the scenes we will never get to see, in terms of inner support.
But because to them, what fans are saying isnât true, theyâve completely refused to engage with the fact itâs the way THEY BEHAVED that made fans feel that way, and theyâve refused to make any changes to curtail it, and just keep talking down to them. Double empathy is hardâ itâs hard for people to empathise with others who have had a different experience to them, and we donât want to empathise with them when they donât ever take steps to empathise with us. Continuing to tell fans âyouâre wrongâ doesnât tackle the root feeling, and just makes them madder.
You canât keep telling fans âhey youâre insane for thinking we donât like Georgeâ when your team principle slags him off in interviews, you canât keep a story straight about the problems with his car (is it wind is it battery deployment is it balance is it George), heâs both unlucky but suddenly his luck has only been bad once compared to poor Kimi, you let Kimi mouth off to Italian media and then let said Italian media insult George in ways that damn near justify a boycott, you donât show up VISIBLY for podiums, you send your team principle out on Antonelliâs Win but for Georgeâs win he doesnât even get the guy he requested, Georgeâs home race merch collection is the other drivers colours, Kimi is made a focus at Georgeâs home race, and your social media strategy is so bad because itâs trying to be a quirky brand pop star account and not what it needs to be right now, more locked down than a politicians mid election.
None of these things mean that Mercedes hate George, but theyâre the ONLY public image theyâre presenting. When the only puzzle pieces your hand fans are the worst parts, you canât be surprised when they put them together and assume thatâs the entire picture. Telling them theyâre idiots for not getting that thereâs more that you never showed them, doesnât get them to go âgosh youâre right mister, gee wizzâ, it gets them telling you to fuck off under every post.
As someone whose previous title was head of communications, youâd think Bradley would KNOW all this.
this is my bug. please admire him.
