As a teenager I spent a lot of time walking around my hometown listening to music on headphones in the middle of the night. There’s a river near my parent’s house and a great blue heron would stand silent in the water during midnight hours. Year after year, the same heron would always return. I’d stand as close to it as I could, just staring at it. I visited the river at night last summer and the heron was still there. I’d like to think it remembers me. I looked up the average lifespan of a great blue heron and it says about 15-20 years. By that measure, the heron is probably reaching the end of its life. I wonder if a new heron will claim its spot once it has passed. Maybe its spirit will remain there forever, guarding the river and fishing silent in the moonlight.
