yes hello my name is Nick and i rewatched this scene 176 times and i cannot HANDLE how their relationship progressed in this show i am such a wreck im going to write an essay on this scene so hold on folks

ok so first of all Yumi has always admired Sachiko. From day 1 she was in love with this woman because of what she saw on the outside; a beautiful, gracious perfect woman, daughter of a rich family who everyone knows. Rosa Chinesis, the perfect student. Then they become Sisters and Yumi gets to know the real Sachiko

and the real Sachiko Ogasawara is a fucking pain in the ass

i mean holy fucking shit this girl made me so mad so many times, her mood swings are the worst, she scolds Yumi for stupid things, she gets frustrated over small details and lashes out unecessarily, and when Yumi wants a bit of attention she just brushes her off for something else. GOD SACHIKO MADE ME SO FRUSTRATED

but… Yumi never gave up. She never once held a grudge against Sachiko. Sure, she had that breakdown when she thought Touko was stealing Sachiko from her, but that was because Sachiko was acting weird. She was colder than usual, more distant, and Yumi noticed the small details because she came to know Sachiko.

but after they made up, their relationship changed. and this show made such a good job of changing it slowly and almost imperceptibly, that I didn’t even notice until SEASON 3. IT TOOK ME THIS SCENE TO REALIZE THAT YUMI GOT SO USED TO SACHIKO ,THAT SHE LEARNED HOW TO HANDLE HER. AND SACHIKO WAS THE ONE WHO PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE WITH THIS INFORMATION, WHEN SHE SAYS THE WORDS “How did you become so good at handling me?”

AND YUMI DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE THAT. I DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE THAT. BUT SACHIKO DID, BECAUSE SHE KNOWS HOW FRUSTRATING SHE CAN BE. SHE RECOGNIZED HER OWN FLAWS AND THANKED YUMI FOR NOT GIVING UP ON HER, AND YUMI WAS SO CONFUSED BECAUSE THE THOUGHT OF GIVING UP ON SACHIKO? NEVER ONCE CROSSED HER MIND. EVER. 

anyway what i’m saying is, the fact that Yumi loves Sachiko so much and learned how to handle made the viewers learn how to love Sachiko and handle her.

This is one of the most well-written relationships i’ve ever seen im so weak for them goodbye

pasting in my descr. from insta~ oniisama e is awesome the characters are all so trapped by their institutions and expectations and memories and in the end no one really makes it out. it’s so of its time and forward thinking and the interpersonal relationships are generationally messy.

accidentally retread a lot of ground with this illustration (oops!!!!). references for comp/poses are the included illuminated manuscript and painting, which i was introduced to in person :) historically it hung at a girls’ finishing school for “moralizing purpose” whichhhh lollllll. too perfect a reference for anything tangential to class s!!!!
