He surprises her with a bouquet of flowers in one hand (of which hide a rather sheepish smile) and her favourite takeout in the other.
‘ How did you know I was hungry? ’ Maya smiles as she spots him walking in; putting her book face down onto the coffee table before getting up to greet him with a kiss.

It was a silly thing for them to be doing. Maya wasn’t sure if they’d be kicked out or not but Matt had been so adamant about seeing this movie so she had agreed. After Googling the closet movie theatre to her, she came across an open air cinema that was only a few blocks away. That might be a better idea -- they could tuck themselves away in a corner and not get yelled at for talking.
Maya prepared a picnic dinner during the afternoon before Matt was set to arrive, and when he showed up she was just tucking a thermos with boiling water into the basket, for tea later, before she opened the door with a smile.
‘ Hey -- hope you don’t mind, but I decided to change the venue of our date. ‘ she spoke as she helped him up the step from her porch into her house, steering him into the kitchen.

the truth is, when you’re about to die, there’s only one thing you think about – it isn’t the honors that were bestowed upon you. the times you were deemed worthy or the roads you didn’t take. no, when you close your eyes that final time, what you see are the people you loved and who loved you in return. through the good times and the bad. i always said i was fighting for my country, for my beliefs, but more than that, i see now that i was fighting for them. the ones who inspired me, the ones who challenged me, the ones who comforted me. i think about all we went through together, and now seeing them one last time. i know i can die proud. i can die happy. i can know peace.
