“I guess I can’t blame you for doing that,” he shrugged slightly. “But it was still stupid to go at them alone,” AJ added. “Have you gotten some ice for that? You don’t want the bruising to get worse.”

“Bold of you to assume I’m not already wasted,” he half-teased with a wiggle of his brows. “This is a party after all,” AJ added. “But if you’re down to play, sure. Let’s see what you’ve got.”

“You and I both know that’s bullshit,” AJ replied with a light shake of his head. “Talk to me– what happened?”

“You won’t let me win?” Lily asked, feigning a gasp, “Some people, not me, but some people would say that’s rude.” 

“The only way you’re winning is if you win fair and square. I’m not going to throw the game just so you feel better about yourself,” he replied simply. “Besides, you should have more confidence in yourself. You might be able to beat me no problem, but if I cheat so you win you’ll never know if you could’ve won on your own.”

“I promise I’m not! This shortcut used to lead to the shops, I don’t know what this,” She paused waving her hands towards the buildings in front of them, “all is. This never used to be here.” 

“When’s the last time you were around this place?” he asked, looking at the buildings she had been gesturing too. “I feel like those have been there for a while.”

At that comment, Maya moved to pull out of the others grip. “I’ll get there on my own.” None of this was easy for Maya. She wasn’t good at speaking about how she felt or even apologising most of the time but she’d been getting there and it was like the words had caused her walls to be thrown up again. “It’s not like I’m far away anyway. Thanks for getting me this far.”

“Of course– fine. Totally fine,” his hands rose up as she pulled herself away from him. He wanted to roll his eyes but just stepped back. “Suit yourself.”

“Why do I feel like you’re just saying that to confuse me?”

“Thank you. I can’t have things like that getting out, my reputation and all.” Lily joked with a laugh. “I don’t know! Now would be a good time to fess up. I’m not a very good loser, you wouldn’t want to have to deal with that.” Lily said with a pointed look, “Oh, good. I was worried there for just a second.” 

“Completely understood,” AJ played along. “Hey– now I said I didn’t trick you. Whether or not I beat you at this is another story. Who knows what I’m capable of? I sure don’t.”
