Byler hints in the background of s1-3

Honestly, this should just be called- ‘my autistic brain casually (and without even trying) notices shit in the background, but never mentioned it- because I thought it sounded too crazy to talk about’ XD. But the symbolism and Easter eggs give my byler-shipping heart so much life. So I thought, since you guys prob. didn’t notice it- I’ll mention it anyways.  So here goes.

Drawings/rainbows

There has been a theme in s3 about how Mike equates ‘falling for girls’ as a part of growing up, and his feelings for Will as something childish that he has to has to grow out of. 

- confessing to El : “A feeling … yeah, like, something… like OLD PEOPLE say it sometimes”.

- “And Will too. I was thinking we could all have new presents to play with and *scoffs* Sorry, that made me sound like a 7 year old... (apologizing to El)

- Mike getting in a fight with Will (after d&d), and saying they can’t be close anymore: 

Mike says, “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!”, and then he tries to ½ apologize only to say, “I’m not trying to be a jerk. Ok? But We’re not kids anymore.” Explaining, this is just the way things are-boys fall in love with girls, get girlfriends, and this is just a part of growing up (heteronormativity).  He tells Will “I mean, what did you think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? We were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?” And poor Will who is probably more aware of his feelings just responds. “Yeah, I guess I did. I really did.” And of course Mike immediately apologizes for being an “ asshole”, after this.

But here’s the thing! Mike actually does wish he didn’t have to grow up and that he could play games with Will (without girlfriends) for the rest of their lives. His room, in s3, SCREAMS that he’s trying to grow up/act straight… but he can’t let go of his feelings for Will.

Crash-course for all the evidence of Will creating the mindflayer/upsidedown

* Honestly I’ve talked about this stuff in my did theories- where I explained how the upsidedown/mf/ the lab subjects/ and russians all connect back to Will creating them. But since so may people assume that Will got his powers from the upsidedown/mf rather than Will creating it all subconsciously (with his powers). Thought i’d do a short analysis of just that connection (without boggling it down with those other plot lines that are interconnected) . *So I’m not mentioning the lights -because it interconnects with the numbers/lab.I’m just going to list every example in short succession from every season for brevity’s sake (so it won’t be structured as eloquently as prior analyses). 

refresher of how Will influences the mf/upsidedown …

S1) 

Will ( in s1e1) says to Dustin if he could have any comic it would be the xmen. Dustin later  says “do you think - el was born with her powers like the xmen? " Will plays a d&d game saying the demogorgan got him -so it does irl. Will writes stories where bad guys weakness are fire so the mf/ demogorgans are lit on fire in s1-3 (and it’s their weakness). Will watches poltergeist so Will is forced to be the child character in that film- who was trapped in a alternative dimension and could only speak to their mother through tech. The demogrgan is said to resemble a shark by nancy-mathcing Will’s Jaws movie poster in his room. in s1 Mr clarke describes the vale of shadows (later the upsidedown) as being created by “necrotic” (’dead’-zombie boy) and “shadow” (shadow monster/mf) “magic”. In d&d the Vale of Shadows, is  as a lush valley hidden in the mountains that holds a sacred pool with the power to make dreams reality. In d&d the demogorgan is literally called the ”deep father" in d&d Nancy also says the demogorgan is like a “lion” the meaning of the name Lonnie- is literally “lion”. We see it attack Will when using lonnie’s gun (in lonnie’s shed). And it knocks the bat out of Jonathan’s hand too. (Baseball/hunting were taught by their dad lonnie). The demogorgan also hurts a deer- mirroring Jonathan’s story about how Lonnie forced him to kill a rabbit and how this upset him as he was a fan of the rabbit character from the film bambi.. El when she first sees the demogorgan also sees it eating it’s own eggs-aka symbolically the father hurting his own children.  Will’s password for cb is rhadagast a wizard who protects Wildlife (the opposite of Hunter-lonnie/the demogorgan). 

Duffers cited as inspo the silent hill videogames): And in s1 Hopper named dropped the character Alessa’s last name. “The bad guys faked Alessa’s death. Kaufmann prepared a substitute body of alessa;  and performed the fake autopsy (like Will) . Alessa had precognition (future/intuition-like will the wise is said to have in s3) and pyrokinesis (firepowers mentioned  Will the wise has in s1).  Alessa’s latent psychic abilities are triggered and she shrouds Silent Hill in fog and an altered reality to prevent her ab*sive parent’s schemes from advancing. Many of the drastic changes that befall the town in the game, such as the horrific creatures that come to inhabit it, are conjured from her imagination and delusions. “ 

Will also says in s1ep1 he wants xmen 134-about the dark phoenix saga. ‘dark phoenix’  - has pyrokinesis ( fire powers-like Will the wise). And the dark phoenix also  “was able to warp reality on a universal scale”. One of the phoenix’s host was even the god Thor (god of lightning-an element Will is associated with a lot in s2)

(in s1 Will also spit up a slug- in d&d putting a slug in a humanoid can create/turn that humanoid into a mf. foreshadowing Will being posessed/becoming the mf in s2. ).

S2)

 Will plays digdug (a videogame about underground tunnels) so the mf creates tunnels. Will’s dog dies so demogogans become demo-dogs. He also watches Ghostbusters- where a character is possessed by the ‘gate keeper’ and can control demon dogs. So this happens to Will too -similar to s1 with poltergeist .In s1 , Hopper even mentions the book Cujo about a violent dog, who is replaced by a new dog named ‘Willie’ (to allude to this).In s1 we see  Mike holding a drawing of Will’s- where Will’s wizard has lightning powers (coming from his hand). everytime Will uses tech in s1, the phones explode and lighting appears out of them- hopper makes a BBQ joke about the burned phones.later in s2 the mf has these same lightning abilities and the lab technician makes the same BBQ joke.Joyce even describes the tunnels of the mf/ that Will’s draws as “like lightning.”  We also see the russians eviserated by lightning next season too.

A lab tech calls Will a wizard-and they monitor his brain waves, record him on video, just like they did to El .(when the mf first appears at Will’s house- the lab techs even notice ). The drawing of the mf is next to a baseball (Lonnie ref) and Will says it was a drawing for a story he wrote. In s2 Nancy describes the mindflayer (but she’s actually describing Will).“So this thing is like a brain that’s controlling everything.”Because it’s not the mindflayers’ brain - it’s Will’s brain controlling everything. ( a “hive mind” aka the mf/WILL share a brain ). Owens in s2e1 (BEFORE the mf possession) says Will’s ‘anniversary affect’ would make him remember “tra*matic memories” and “OPEN the neurological flood GATES” (aka Will’s neurological GATES are the gates between the real world and upsidedown - which are connected to the mf).  

 Owens in s2e1 (after mentioning the “gates”) even says Will’s ‘anniversary affect’ /  “tr*umatic memories” would  cause temporary “personality changes”for Will (the later mf possession) . I mean… Owens wasn’t entirely wrong was he? Will even feels the back of his neck in s2 and says it has to do with “memories” …and in s3 feeling the back of his neck meant Will was sensing  the mf. Similarly, before his possession-mr clarke  mentions phineus gage who after an accident had a “complete change to his personality” (and the shot pans to Will).

Nancy even calls the mind flayer the “mind-flamer”- hinting at it’s connection to Will the wise who has fire powers). And Dustin says the mf “takes over minds with it’s highly developed psyionic abilities “ And to “summon an undead army… cause the mindflayer loves brains ” ( and in s3 the mf creates a undead army by taking over people’s brains). Hopper  even says “So how do we kill this thing shoot it with fireballs ?” (which destroys the flesh-monster in s3) ”

S3) 

Will (the “zombie boy”) writes a story about juju zombies after watching a film about zombies at starcourt in s3 - then the mf creates a undead army -which was also foreshadowed in s2 (and similar to Will’s  s3 d&d story).  We also see Will wrote this d&d story in front of “the thing” poster. So the mf creates a flesh monster resembling the creature in that film too.  We also see someone get bit (el) like in Will’s story and when his friends retcon his ending to be about “sacrificing themselves via explosion (Hopper).” Will just says “fine you win” (so it ends that way).Also, the shadow monster is now called the Mindflayer - and mimics the mf from d&d (both can control rats with their powers in the show/game).  

Will in s2-3 grabs the back of his neck and he attributed it to “memories”, “dreams”, and sensing the mf. Will created castle byers after his dad left and he grabs the bat in cb which was next to the Will the wise drawing (similar to how the baseball was next to the mf drawing in s2) and destroys cb with said bat . Then Will touches his neck and admits the mf has returned.  EVERY moment Will senses the mf can be loosely connected to Lonnie. Lonnie used to call him h*mophobic sl*rs so anytime he subconsciously thinks of his feelings towards Mike the mf appears-1st time it’s on one of their ‘movie dates’, 2nd time when Mike and El walk off together down the hill to make-out, 3rd time right after he smashed castle byers after Mike says “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”, 4th time (after the fight with Mike) when Billy is yelling to open the door (a trigger) and confides in Mike, 5th time when Mike asks him to go away so he can talk to El in the hospital waiting area, and 6th time when Mike says he loves El. The 7th time is when Jonathan is fixing up a car -something Lonnie used to do.Lonnie fixes up cars as a hobby-showing his remodeled car to Jonathan in s1 . Will then senses the mf and grabs his neck-which he said are connected to old “memories”.  max and Mike are silent until Jonathan says  says “got it (the distributor)”. Then Mike screams for his older sibling. We also see in s1 Jonathan checked to see if Lonnie threw Will in his trunk- something the mf does to some of his victims in s3.

Dustin and susie sing “never ending story”- which is literally about a seemingly normal boy  named Sebastian with a bowl cut (from a single parent home) subconsciously making a fantasy world being invaded by a dark force (representing the loss of hope/dreams) that only his imagination powers can fix . “make believe i’m everywhere … what you dream will be…Rhymes that keep their secrets Will unfold behind the clouds.And there upon a rainbow Is the answer to a never ending story” . Cough-Will’s rainbow ship he CREATED.Both times the  lyric plays  “Rhymes that keep their secrets WILL “ ( it pans to Will). 

The film also follows a false chosen one who everyone says is supposed to save fantasia- named Atreyu (el). Specifically, for that plotwist that Sebastian (Will) has to be the one to do so , not Atreyu (who sebastian subconsciously created). In the novel/film-Atreyu ( the child who was deemed the ‘chosen one) is knocked from Falkor’s back, and into the sea of possibilities. There he wakes on the shore of abandoned ruins. 

“There Gmork (The Mindflayer) reveals himself, having been lying in wait.And then latches his jaws onto Atreyu’s leg.”

-Before the duet, Susie tells dusin she’s reading “ a wizard of earthsea” and says ged is about to save his world. The book is about a boy-wizard  named Ged (Will) who casts a powerful spell, but the spell goes awry and instead he releases a shadow creature! The new Archmage, Gensher, describes the shadow as an ancient evil that wishes to possess Ged. But the ‘shadow’ turns out  to be a representation of the darkest aspects of his personality. And the only way for the world to be saved is for the 2 to merge and for Ged to accept himself . 

-Will says he’s a wizard ( writing on a music tape in s3 “will the wise-wizard mix’ and having his password for castle byers be ‘rhadaghast’- a lotr wizard). The way they describe d&d Wizards matches Will/mindflayer perfectly “Wizards are adepts and magicians who combine according to the type of their spells. Relying on the subtle weaves of magic that permeate the universe, wizards are able to create spells of explosive fire, sparking lightning, subtle deception, and gross mind control. Their magic summons monsters from other planes of existence, predicts the future, and turns defeated enemies into zombies. Their most powerful spells can transform one substance into another, summon meteors from the sky, and open portals to other worlds” (all these powers Will the wise/mf are implied to have)

- Stranger things d&d comic (published post s3) : Will creating a illusion army of monsters -as Will the wizard.

- stranger writers twitter reffed several movies which discuss artist/writer WILLiam Blake who helped make the art exhibit “worlds turned upsidedown” 

possible reason for the flayed eating  chemicals& fertilizer (in s3)

full link/credits here.  Lonnie’s gf has a biker shirt from Harley davidson- with the eagle logo and their saying “live to ride’. Which would imply lonnie is also in such biker circles. Harley davidson in the 80s had dr*g gangs too (primarily m*th).

One reason m*th is so prevalent in rural areas is that it can be formulated, or “cooked,” by small producers and one of the ingredients is readily found on most farms – anhydrous AMMONIA fertilizer. Both farmers and chemical suppliers have experienced thefts of anhydrous particularly in the Midwest.“

WHICH REMINDS ME OF the FLAYED EATING FERTILIZER AND CHEMICALS IN S3 . Nancy even says farmers/chem suppliers  are having fertilizer stolen! And she later thinks flayed tom was on drugs- “A mysterious  case of the missing fertilizer- a Nancy Drew Mystery”. This is also in the same season one character (who looks a bit like Lonnie) is a biker is corrupting the town.

Will creating /basing the supernatural from suppressed memories -means it’s from a very young child’s perspective . young Will would equate people eating chemicals, ammonia fertilizer, and ammonia… to using those SAME chemicals to create m*th and then physically consuming them . Why we see mrs driscoll eating fertilizer & Billy drinking ammonia.

The reason the flayed started behaving differently is probably because in s2 Will was forcibly injected with a needle & woken up with ammonia by Hopper-jogging some of those old memories. 

EVEN Nancy’s proof Tom is on dr*gs is a symptom of m*th use or withdrawl from it-excessive sweating (like all the flayed in s2-3). M*th causes hyperthermia (body is at a higher temp than usual)-so they like it cold!!!!! Even clammy hands that she mentioned is a symptom of m*th use. in children it can even cause seizures- like Will :(

And when m*th is made via fertilizer it first is made into a highly corrosive liquid which is sometimes green-like the Russian lab.“six pounds of toxic waste is created for every pound of m*th manufactured. The waste is often dumped on farms, in rivers and and is harmful to the environment.” Like all the chemical leaks relating to Hawkins lab/mf that affected the crops in s2/this pic of water in s3.

The fathers of Stranger Things:  (narrative analysis)

This analysis will discuss all the dads in st. But will mostly focus on the parallels between Brenner, Lonnie, Neil,and Hopper. And the ramifications on their kids.And no i’m not saying Hopper is necessarily as bad as these other fathers/doesn’t have his reasons. But i think the parallels are worth mentioning.

Cycles of Ab*se  & internalizing your father’s teachings

Baseball-We see in s2 the cycle of abuse is there- Billy mimics Neil, and then Max mimics Billy. And uses violence to stand up for herself- which earlier she said she was trying to combat … explaining she can be angry like Billy sometimes but she never wants to be like him (her nickname symbolizing this: aka ‘mad max’).  

We see in s3 Neil taught Billy baseball and bullied him  and called him a “p*ssy” so Billy as a child bullied others and calls them a “p*ssy” (internalizing his father’s teachings and probably venting his anger towards his father on to others). We also see Billy in s2 antagonizes max and demands “say it. say it!”And later Max yells at Billy “say it! say it” and attacks him with a bat. Showing that even Neil has influenced her to a certain extent (via Billy’s ab*se of Max). 

We also see in s3 when Will is frustrated he destroys cb (a symbol of his artistic ambition/the day his father left) and destroys it with a  baseball bat (and then we see the mf officially return) . We also see in s2, Will has a baseball next to the mf drawing (in his room). This is noteworthy due to the fact Jonathan in s1 asks if Will even likes baseball or is just doing it to appease his father. in s1, Will admits he isn’t a fan of baseball -showing how this ‘interest’ in baseball in later seasons just reflects his desire to win his father’s approval (through more sterotypically masculine hobbies).  And we see how both Neil & Lonnie taught both their sons baseball- who are both named William -and who they would call  “f*gs”. We also see in s1 Jonathan lugs around a baseball bat & his father’s gun -however neither tool is used by him in the end successfully. However, in s3 we see Jonathan using an axe (like Joyce) showing by this point he’s mostly taken on Joyce’s influence. 

El’s spying , fighting the Russians, and  lack of care for her safety shows she internalized Brenner’s teachings- We know in s1 El was trained to be a spy/weapon against the soviets (by Brenner). And in later seasons when it comes to her interpersonal relationships- she continues to spy on everyone around her.  she spies on Mike despite his vocal discomfort in s3. Brenner specifically tells her to spy and repeat the words the guys are saying back to him- which is exactly what she does to Lucas and Mike (spying on them and repeating their words back to Max). And when Mike is concerned for her safety we also have El mimic Brenner’s words (from s1) . in s1 she is also said to be taken by Brenner to be a “weapon to fight the commies” and in s3 that’s exactly what she did!  She does literally everything Brenner ever wanted from her!!!!!!!

Jonathan & Billy’s fights with Steve (reflect their father issues… which Steve accidentally triggered)- We see Billy and Jonathan both shoved into walls by their father’s . For Billy this is in a direct consequence of Max running away and for Jonathan- Will’s disappeareance. Billy first shoves Lucas into the wall similarly to Neil. And both Jonathan and Billy are told to “STOP”.

Billy also breaks a plate over Steve’s head. What’s interesting to note is in s3 we see Billy’s mother threw a plate at  Billy’s father (so he was mimicking the dysfunction he saw as a child). kind of like how in s3 he backhands max (mirroring how neil backhanded his mother in the s3 flashback). 

When it comes to jonathan we see jonathan tell nancy to leave and it’s “not worth it” to argue with Steve. However he stops in his tracks when Steve says he’s “like his father”. Then Steve proceeds to insult his family. And  eventually Jonathan who throughout every season is generally portrayed as non confrontational attacks steve. similarly when Billy and Jonathan are beating Steve (who is laying on the ground)-multiple people are yelling for them to stop.But both are in too much of a triggered daze to stop themselves. Even when the cops come- Jonathan elbows the cop in the face and kicks steve with handcuffs on and even says handcuffed for the cop to “get off’ (like he told Lonnie earlier). 

Both would rather do this to their own fathers-but Steve (and the cops) were used as their proxy instead. The fights might reflect what the boys have been taught by their fathers-aka vi*lence. Also on some subconscious level jonathan may have been like-oh you think i’m like my dad? I’ll show you what my dad is like (beats steve with no mercy).

***also, tw se*ual ab*se (you can skip)-during the jonathan fight they also bring up the “pervy photo sesh”- which jonathan took right after seeing his father. in the movies said to inspire s4 they often had a se*ually ab*sive dad/relative who would take innaproriate pics of his kids.uuuuugh. So jonathan may have just been mimicking that past behavior of his father. ugh.***

- The demogorgan that attacks Will in s1 is called the “deep FATHER” in d&d.

 Also, kicking myself for forgetting to mention another mf-lonnie connection. We know Lonnie fixes up cars as a hobby-showing his remodeled car to Jonathan in s1 .  And in the “runaway max” novel Billy would fix up old cars with Max at an auto-place (as a way for them to spend time together.) So Lonnie most likely fixed up cars in front his boys/tried to teach them to fix cars (similar to teaching them hunting/baseball). When Jonathan  lifts up a car hood and says  “ distributor… where is it?”. Will then senses the mf and grabs his neck-which he said are connected to “old memories”.  max and Mike are silent until Jonathan says  says “got it (the distributor)”. And then Mike screams for his older sibling.

Besides this car example, another time Will senses the mf is when he used a bat which lonnie taught him to do.(most other times are in relation to him being romantically jealous of m*leven, and Lonnie would call Will homophic names). It all technically connects back to Lonnie. 

Plus…I mean we know Will likes tech and is in the av club (which is primarily for setting up film projectors). They did other things too, though:pa systems, lighting, etc.But ,no one can explain how Jonathan got in to such an expensive hobby of photography in the first place (which is similar to film projectors). Even when asked by Nancy how long he’s been doing photography he doesn’t answer how long/ when he started . And the s4 movies have a depressing explanation of how Lonnie may have been the first photographer Jonathan met. Besides what i mentioned earlier in the analysis- one s4 film “the visit” even has the teen (who is an older sibling and aspiring film maker) be taught photography/film making by the dad who abandoned them when she was young (and who she now hates). Meanwhile the younger bro  (wrongfully) blames himself for the dad leaving thinking the dad left cause he embarrassed him by messing up in his little league sports game. Which just baffles his older sibling- that he’s been assuming that was the explanation (for years).

Hopper & lonnie (anon)

So I’ve been reading your theories about Hopper being an interject alter who is going to figure it out after his “death” after season three. I really love it, I think it fits so well. But I was wondering something. 

Why does Will view Hopper, in particular, as someone who could protect him? 

If it was just about being an authority figure, he could have chosen any other cop. And I’m not sure it was about Hopper as a person either, because until the events, it’s implied he and Joyce aren’t close anymore. They had something in high school but Hopper moved away years ago and is kind of an outside observer in her life now, up until Will vanishes. 

So why Hopper? Why would Will attach so strongly to him? 

Then I noticed the time frame. I’m not a hundred per cent sure, but I think Hopper returns to Hawkins the year before, or maybe the same year, Lonnie leaves. Which makes a lot of sense.

Back in episode two, Hopper tells the woman he’s with how sleepy Hawkins is. There hasn’t been a murder since 1923 or a su*cide since 1969. And people keep making a big deal of how he’s “a big city cop” and “things like that don’t happen in Hawkins”. It’s implied that Hopper is used to seeing darker crimes, and would recognize them if they were happening on his patch. And then shortly after he arrives in town Lonnie - a bully who relished controlling his family and loved to freeload off Joyce’s hard work - packs up and leaves for a more anonymous life in the city. It’s deeply suspicious. Why would he do that? What was he afraid of? 

I think he was afraid Hopper would discover the depths of his abuse of Will. 

I don’t think Hopper actually did find any evidence of that before he left, or ran him out of town or anything. Hopper seems to view Lonnie as a deadbeat, but he still wants to call him, even after Joyce tells him about the verbal abuse Lonnie used to give Will, and we see Hopper look discomfited. But he still pushes the Lonnie thing and wants to get him involved in Will’s disappearance, like he would any other dad, so I don’t think he has any idea of the truth.

What I think might have happened was that Hopper caught Lonnie in some minor crime, and pulled him to rights on it in front of Will. It could have been anything. Maybe Lonnie was drunk and mouthing off and Hopper physically restrained him. Maybe the family were going hungry to pay his debts and Hopper intervened. We don’t know. But I think there was something, and Hopper was very much the “bigger guy” in the situation. The alpha male. And for Will, it was the first time he’d seen his dad defeated like that.

And then shortly afterwards, Lonnie left. And in Will’s little kid mind, the two things HAD to be connected. Hopper scared Lonnie away! I wouldn’t be surprised if Hopper spooked Lonnie. Maybe he got in his face and said something like “I know guys like you” or “What else are you up to, out here in the woods? What else are you hiding, huh?” And Hopper is thinking meth cooking or something, but Lonnie’s mind goes to darker places and wonders how much he might really know. 

When Will first sees the Demogorgon it’s as a faceless man in the woods. And he runs home and tries to call the police. Maybe he thinks it’s Lonnie or his friends and is hoping Hopper will save him again.

I just think something must have happened to make Will have such trust in Hopper as a protector, even if Hopper himself is unaware of it. I hope we get to see the flashback, and young Will forming that idea. Maybe as Hopper is wandering around the death scape figuring out what he really is, this memory will come to him as a flashback and he’ll be confused. Maybe he / the audience will misinterpret it as being about “protecting Joyce” . But we’ll see Will right there and join the dots. 

Side note: I wonder if Lonnie really was cooking meth? PCP / biker meth was big among poor communities in the Eighties, and it’s a scary drug. It causes hallucinations and increases aggression. It might have made Lonnie into more of a monster when he was on it, and if he gave it to Will to get some sick kick out of seeing a kid on drugs, the hallucinogen might have been what unlocked Will’s powers. This actually makes a lot of sense on why Lonnie may have left and hates Hopper . He would be getting in the way of his “dr*g business” and other sick activities. Lonnie’s gf even has a biker shirt from Harley davidson- with the eagle logo and their saying “live to ride’. Which would imply lonnie is also in such biker circles. Harley davidson in the 80s had dr*g gangs too.

* the whole convo of Cynthia replacing 50 something Lonnie for a “younger model”. Is foreshadowing of Lonnie doing that to her. He replaced Joyce with a gal in her 20s. And will prob pick another young girl to use in s4/5. Like the movies hint his next gf is about Jonathan’s age-ick. They also called it “bathtub cr*nk” which is sketchy given the bathtub is what Will/mf fears and how the sensory deprivation tank is later called a tub by el . Becky even said he would get terry high and throw her in the tank/tub.

And s4 movies have quite a few biker gangs . Also would make the fact in s2 Will was forcibly injected with a needle more sinister. We see on the TV in s2 punkie brooster says they had a nightmare of having a needle forced into their arm - similar to Will

 And in s2 Billy (aka William) was injected in the neck and threatened with a bat. And in s3 robin and Steve were injected in the neck and got high. I thought hopper being in a upsidedown reflection of a spoon was more of a matrix DID ref. But there could be more to it. Like you mentioned such things were cooked in spoons. It would also explain Lonnie’s “debts”.

And yeah in the st books brenner gave the subjects drugs which activated/strengthened their powers yikes . Yikes . Yikes

WHICH REMINDS ME OF the FLAYED EATING FERTILIZER AND CHEMICALS IN S3 OMG. Nancy even says farmers/chem suppliers  are having fertilizer stolen omg! And she later thinks flayed tom was on drugs- “Nancy drew and the case of the missing fertilizer”. 

EVEN Nancy’s proof Tom is on dr*gs is a symptom of m*th use or withdrawl from it-excessive sweating (like all the flayed in s2-3). M*th causes hyperthermia (body is at a higher temp than usual)-so they like it cold!!!!! ahhhhh. Even clammy hands that she mentioned is a symptom of m*th use. in children it can even cause seizures- like Will :(

It also does take some chemisty knowledge to COVERT various substances (including fertilizer and other chemicals) to make m*th- which reminds me of the kids saying they can convert one substance into another (when referencing why the possessed are eating chemicals). I CRACKED THE CODE!!!!!!!!!!

when m*th is made via soil it first is made into a highly corrosive liquid which is sometimes green-like the Russian lab.

“six pounds of toxic waste is created for every pound of m*th manufactured. The waste is often dumped on farms, in rivers and and is harmful to the environment.” Like all the chemical leaks relating to Hawkins lab/mf that affected crops in s2/this pic of water in s3.

Update 2

I think its another eateregg . The mf mimicking lonnie- like throwing people in trunks since its implied Lonnie did so to Will in s1. Will creating /basing the supernatural from supressed memories -means it’s from a child’s perspective . He’d equate people eating chemicals, fertilizer, and ammonia to using those SAME chemicals to create m*th and then physically consuming them .

To add to this, maybe the reason the m*th started to reappear for Will (and therefore cause the flayed to eat chemicals) is because they used ammonia to wake him up in S2

It’s brief but in S2E8 about 32 minutes in, we see Hopper wet a cotton ball with it and put it under Will’s nose.

*And on a completely irrelevant note, there’s a sunflower blanket in Lonnie’s place in S1E2 about 27:31 minutes in when Jonathan looks through the door window

Great catches-guys. I knew Will had a sunflower book next to his bed (paralleling terry seeing sunflowers next to her bed ). But the fact Lonnie has a sunflower blanket is very suspicious.

Not to mention i didn’t realize he was woken up with ammonia. That really would explain why the flayed started eating chemicals like ammonia in s3-cause the smell would jog memories of it subconsciously. :(

Lonnie also asks jonathan if hopper is still cheif and then immediately gets irritated and says Joyce should move them up to Indianapolis so he can see jonathan more .implying that yes hopper is the reason he left - and he does want to see his kids. Which is terrifying since he’s an ab*sive shit. And Hopper is now gone and the byers moved…so nothing is stopping him now. Could explain why Lonnie still has a kid’s bike at his house and its positioned between jonathan/ Lonnie . As Lonnie tries to get all huggy and jonathan pushes him off . Maybe it used to be Jonathan’s? Could have more sinister explanations though.

-when Nancy mentions the stolen fertilizer one of the future flayed is drinking out of cup with an eagle on it. The eagle was a  shown on Lonnie’s girlfriend as a connection to the biker gang  (harley davidson) who often sold m*th in the 80s.

Brief overview of all of S3′s plot (theory)

The virus/ The Mindflayer’s plan / the investigations/ and the tragic ending

So people have already mentioned Romero’s influence on season 3,but most people simply mention “Dawn of the Dead” in relation to the influence of a virus and a final battle at the mall. However, someone mentioned (willel maybe?) how The Duffers may take influence from one of his lesser known movies like “The crazies” from 1973 (which also had a later remake in 2010.) And this is where my theory comes into play.  In “The crazies“ the virus causes deterioration of mental state and then death, but if they survive they “go completely mad”.

 The mindflayer may be in the upside down but a part of him (the smoke monster that left Will) is still in the real world and this is where the virus comes into play. I was looking at the Dungeons and Dragons wikia page about the mind flayer and saw some of the  Monsters under the Mind Flayer’s control:

 Cranium rats- “Regular rats bombarded with psionic energy. They form intelligent swarms that grow smarter as they accumulate experiences.” 

 The mind flayer also has many powers, one of which is called ‘Crown madness’ which assaults someone’s mind and can have them attack any character of the Mind Flayer’s choice. 

 This may be connected to one of the monsters called the Intellect devourer - “creatures created by subjecting a slave’s brain to a ritual…

 where they are employed as guards or as bait to lure outsiders (cough Will , I explained why the m.f. wants him so badly here)  into the midflayer’s colony.” 

 “There is a larval form of the intellect devourer… ‘Ceremorphosis’ is a bodily change (caused by the midflayer) that occurred in a humanoid being, usually a human. “

 Personally I don’t think everyone infected/influenced by the mindflayer turns into a monster- Bruce (Nancy and Jonathan’s boss) will become the monster-because they are both in the same hospital hallway (but it’s possible he may have merged with heather or other victims). But I’m not entirely sure? 

  Also if the source of infection is broken remnants of what possessed Will it may affect people in a different yet similar way-aka affecting their mental state . Since Will has already survived a similar “Infection” I believe he’ll be immune to the virus, which would be excellent foreshadowing of the s2 nickname “zombie-boy.”

So back to the movie … In the movie the infection takes place in a small town (Hawkins) but the source of the infection differs in the 73′ and 2010 versions ( government’s biological weapon vs water supply). But what if it’s both? The American government had already tried to weaponize the upside down …and where did the entity that possessed Will go? Well during the summer it may have gone somewhere cold like a source of water (Lover’s lake and the pool) as well as the scoops ahoy icecream (which causes Dustin, Robin and Steve to investigate at the mall). The lifeguard “is a source of a dark mystery” so maybe she’s patient zero and has gone missing. I believe the lifeguard will be the centerpiece of the story. Hopper (as a police chief) along with Joyce (and probably Murray) will investigate and detect some type of government cover-up relating to the newly elected Hawkins mayor. Similarly, Jonathan and Nancy will also try to unravel this government mystery/disapperences.

Note that in the 2010 version of the film, the mayor refused to shut-down the water supply because the economic cost to the small town, this could play out in the same way … having the mayor not want to shutdown the mall for similar reasons- and because he’s not popular due to how the mall negatively affected downtown- he may also try to coverup the people who are going missing (although 50/50 chance he may be doing it because he’s a Russian spy-not entirely sure?).

And here is where the Russians come into play. I believe the Russians will kidnap those who are believed to be infected … maybe to experiment or weaponize the virus, or even to try to cure it and prevent it from spreading (maybe because they fear what the US government will do with said virus). So maybe Billy and other people who are infected will be taken into quarantine (a similar thing happened in “The crazies”). And since Murray used to be a Russian spy (theory and evidence here) he’ll be useful to the Hopper/Joyce investigation.

 Also El and Will (after fighting/having breakups with Mike- lol expect a lot of romantic drama between the 3) will bond and (using their powers) investigate the true source of all the chaos – that being the mindflayer- but they’ll also team up with Mike, Max, and Lucas -and later on Jonathan and Nancy- until the last ep at the mall, where they all team up with Steve, Robin, and Dustin.

 Personally , I believe the mall, is a Russian business and may be where the Russians are experimenting and keeping people under quarantine. When the team are fighting and all hope seems to be lost -the us government comes in to ‘rescue’ everyone- they’ll probably shoot all the Russians and some of the guilable audience will think this is good thing. Until they shoot all the infected Americans (Billy and others) – and this is when the audience realizes… that no, the fight isn’t actually over.

 The season will end with the Us government kidnapping and taking Will and El away (because of their powers) . I went into very thorough detail about the RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE for this theory here.

 I mean, do you really think Hawkin’s lab just gave Will free therapy out of the goodness of their hearts or simply to keep the Byers quiet? No, Brenner was suspicious that any 12 year old boy survived a week in an environment that his colleagues described as having  “toxic air”, and a place where full-grown men were killed almost instantly in. Brenner in the book “suspicious minds” describes people he believes may have powers/or have the capability of developing powers as having “potential”. Him and other scientists are observing Will and recording him on camera in his sessions to see if Will has ‘potential’. Think about it, since when did therapists take blood pressure, draw blood samples , do weight/ height measurements, and monitor brain activity and video record every session? And this is implied to happen at every visit! He’s a lab rat to them, plain and simple. And the second they know for certain Will has powers he’ll be taken. Hawkins lab/ the government and Dr. Brenner are playing the long-game with Will.

 So essentially the scenes of the kids looking back at the empty Byers’ house is the last scene in s3. Every season has a one month time skip- and the clothes that Dustin, Mike, and Max were wearing included pants and or long sleeves. The fact they spoiled the ending indicates it’s a red herring.  It’s not simply that the Byers moved- it’s that they moved due to the trauma of losing Will. I believe throughout the season Joyce will want to move (like Bob wanted – for mental health and financial reasons)- the only thing holding her back is the fact that Will’s support system (his friends) and Hopper are there.But after Will is taken away (and Hopper probably dies, theory here) she leaves.

Dustin knows what’s up…

I definitely think Dustin has been used to foreshadow byler/mileven story-beats over the past few seasons. (Even if he as a character doesn’t actually know).

In S1

I always found the discussion between Dustin and Mike (in s1 ep 6) about Lucas… to be strange, almost hand-fisted. Like it didn’t quite fit the story they were telling at the time. I mean… listen to some of the lines from that s1 scene (after seeing s3) and tell me whether it sounds more like the s3 byler fight or the s1 Lucas/Mike fight? 

Dustin: “He’s just jealous.”

Mike: “What?”

Dustin: “Sometimes your total obliviousness just blows my mind?” 

Dustin: “He’s your best-friend right?”

Mike: “Yeah…I mean, I don’t know.  

Dustin: “ What matters is, he’s your best friend. And then this girl shows up… and all you ever want to do is spend time with her!”

Mike: (defensive) “THAT’S NOT TRUE!”

Dustin: “Yes it is! And you know it. And he knows it. But no one ever says anything until you’re both start… yelling at each other. And now it’s weird”

Mike: “He’s not my best friend! … I mean he is. But so are you.”

(If the discussion was about Will, it shows Mike is confused, about whether Will is his best-friend. He claims all 3 are his best friends. Which is interesting given how people try to “no homo” s2 with the excuse that Mike simply treats Will differently because unlike Lucas/Dustin, Will is his ‘best friend’.  Even in the Montauk (later renamed Stranger Things) character descriptions …this ambiguity was alluded to.  In Mike’s bio it describes all 3 as “his best friends”. But then that statement is contradicted in Lucas bio by describing Lucas (and only Lucas) as , “Mike’s best friend”.  Dustin’s character bio doesn’t even mention Mike . And Will’s bio mentions Mike (but does not refer to him as his best friend) instead it says “ sexual identity issues… LIKE MIKE , Will ESCAPES through fantasy gaming where he can be himself, uninhibited.” 

If Lucas is Mike’s real best friend . Mike in s1 proclaiming “I’m the only one who cares about Will!” Seems like something a kid with a crush might say ( because obviously his other friends care about Will). But he thinks he cares the most. He was even the first to worry about Will not showing up to school, the first to suggest looking for him while speaking to Hopper, and when Hopper and his parents say ‘no’ he sneaks out anyway (and is the first to suggest forming a search party). The first to believe Will was alive after seeing his dead body.The only boy to have a scene dedicated solely to him mourning Will.  And was the only boy to stay awake at the hospital, so he could be the first boy to see and hug Will. The only one to have a private one on one talk before Will goes missing. The only one who was literally given 100s of Will’s drawings- where he put them all in a binder. And yet Dustin think Lucas’ is Mike’s best friend?! So what does that make Mike and Will? A part of me thinks Mike and Will are subconsciously less close when in public/in front of others (like Dustin & Lucas)- because almost every byler scene is in private or away from his other friends… talked about it here.

Then in s3

While climbing up the hill, Dustin talks about Romeo & Juliet (while mileven is out of frame). R&J is all about the dangers of not knowing the difference between love and infatuation. R&J were teenagers who claimed that they were in love with each other after knowing each for a few days and deciding to get married…sabotaging the closest relationships they had with their friends/family (all in the name of ‘true love’) . Similarly Mileven thought they were in love after only a week of knowing each other, and the second they are reunited they start dating and spend all their time with each other, becoming apathetic to the people they care about. Also,  after Romeo (El ) is banished , Juliet (Mike) just complains about how in love/sad she is, but never pursues looking for him (sound familiar)? 

So the fact that after this R&J reference, Dustin describes mileven, saying “IT’S BULLSHIT!” I mean, do you guys not remember the last time someone used that line to describe a romantic relationship?!

 You know like what Nancy (Mike’s sister) said about her first real relationship.Don’t get me wrong,  it could all be a coincidence, but if not …

Insert Murray’s conversation (with Nancy): “ Afraid that if you’d accept yourself for who you really are (cough queer-subtext),  and retreated back to… name, name? Steve (El). Steve! we like Steve but we don’t love Steve.”

Re-blogging because I just looked at Stranger Things twitter and saw they posted this (a few months) before s3 came out.

The 3 monologues of Dustin, Mike, and Chrissy’s  (theory)

So in a lot of films said to inspire s4: they have at the beginning of the film  - a play, musical number, etc -that foreshadow future events of the film, or give us insight into the psyche of said film characters.  So I think that’s where the bts pic showing  monologue performances comes into play. if we do see monologues it may be a quick montage of the 3 monologues- with the most prevalent lines being shown.

1) Mike’s monologue-perhaps is Antonio’s monologue from ‘12th night” (shown on the bts monologue-poster )

Antonio is gay/in love with sebastian. His monologue is about being in love with Sebastian and going to a treacherous town to be with him, and feeling betrayed and wrongly assuming Sebastian doesn’t want to be friends anymore . 

Antonio’s monologue referencing his love for Sebastian:

“His life I gave him and did thereto add my love- without retention or restraint. All in his dedication; for his sake , did I expose myself. Pure for his love, into the danger of this adverse town.”

cough Mike going to Cali to see Will, which ends up being dangerous.

Sebastian - also has a female twin (both of which are mistaken for each other due to their resemblance, cough Willel). Antonio is very forward with his feelings to Sebastian, but it almost always comedically goes over Sebastian’s head.  Which after Mike initiated every byler moment- but then in s3 is like “i love el” “not my fault you don’t like girls”. I couldn’t blame Will for dismissing anything from Mike as him “over-reading ’ the situation.Literally in one s4 movie this was a comedic-bit too. Sebastian also cries over missing Antonio (which he himself deems as “effeminate”) to do. Cough-Will’s “boys don’t cry “ poster- which is a gay anthem. 12th night is a very queer coded shakespeare play. We have Antonio loving Sebastian. But, we even have a plot point of a girl thinking she loves sebastian’s female twin (dressed as a boy/pretending to be her brother sebastian). Cough like mike being into El when she looked like a boy/Will (sebastian)

Also, historically, quite a few people tried to "no-homo” Antonio as just loving sebastian as a friend… which… if that doesn’t remind you of byler XD

I suppose they may go for the more cliche romeo & juliet- since s4 posted the “what is in a name “ quote where ( juliet describes how she loves Romeo despite his family drama- using a metaphor of a rose ). Which may work given the rose imagery of the creel’s and their problematic family dynamics- paralleling the byers. But I like the former possibility more- especially cause most scholars agree romeo & juliet weren’t in love- but just young kids who foolishly thought they were in love after a few days (cough m*leven). And it’s implied romeo was actually using Juliet as a rebound to Rosaline (juliet’s cousin, who rejected Romeo before hand and who physically resembled juliet).Not to mention how shakespeare didn’t believe in “love at first sight” like r&j. Shakespeare in every play that had “love at first sight” always had the relationship end poorly. And shakespeare instead believed in the concept/ trope of - not realizing you’ve been in love with someone you’ve known for a long , until a great separation occurs. Cough byler.

2)Dustin’s possible monologue from -hounds of baskerville . The quote he says in the teaser is from ch 3 , where in said chapter -Holmes also gives an interesting monologue….

”The devil’s agents may be flesh and blood. There are 2 questions… whether any crime has been committed at all. The second- what is the crime and how was it committed. If we’re dealing with forces outside the laws of nature, there is an end to our investigation. But we are bound to exhaust all our hypotheses before falling back on this one.”

Essentially fits my theory that maybe - the real  “devil’s agents”/ bad guys are ‘flesh &blood ‘ humans (like some fathers in the show).  And the lines about whether a crime was committed or not could be foreshadowing of chrissy’s death being faked - and her ‘death’ fueling  the false satanic panic. Similar to in the novel, the (fake) hellhound death curse -being spread by real human villains, to cover up their horrible deeds. We may soon see the real devils are humans. Especially if Chrissy’s  disappearence was caused by her trying to fake her death to escape her ab*sers (and later ending up at penthurst).  The same goes for them investigating the supernatural happenings of the creels-  if it’s just supernatural nonsense, like Holmes said the “investigation is over”. But if not…. there’s more to this that the Hawkins crew need to investigate (aka what was the crime? And what’s the explanation for this rumored supernatural phenomena?) - aka maybe Will subconsciously creating the creels and others via his powers and tra*ma. Which may be revealed in s5.

Also Brenner’s actor’s post alludes to this concept of the real monsters being humans. Similar to Holmes quote.

*this book ref could just be a minor demodog eastergg, but i think it’s possible he is in theatre. Dustin wore a theatre shirt in s1, so it’s possible foreshadowing. Plus, in the rebel robin novel-robin was in theatre & went to a roller-rink. And we already see both set pieces for s4 (for different characters). And since Dustin was never shown to be into sherlock before- maybe the fact he’s quoting him has to do with playing him in a monologue for drama club.

3) Chrissy’s monologue - Nina’s from “the seagull” (shown on the bts poster)

The monologue is of a girl describing her ab*ser, herself as a seagull , her mental health, & being a poor actress… the pain on stage would be Chrissy’s actual pain rather than simply acting. Chrissy and Nina are also nicknames for Christina.

In the st book rebel robin- robin during a play audition - relates too much to her character. And she’s starts having an anxiety attack on stage (which everyone perceives as great acting /being in character). Then she passes out- i wonder if something similar happens?

 The context in the play: Konstantin shows up to give Nina a gull that he has shot. Nina is confused and horrified .Trigorin sees the gull that Konstantin has shot and muses to Nina on how he could use it as a subject for a short story:

“The plot for the short story: a young girl lives all her life on the shore of a lake. She loves the lake, like a gull, and she’s happy and free, like a gull. But a man arrives by chance, and when he sees her, he destroys her, out of sheer boredom. Like this gull.”  

The seagull motif reminds me a lot of Jonathan’s rabbit-hunting story. It’s also a parallel to El - whose papa tried to make her k*ll a cat.  And reminds me of how Billy was free and happy like the seagulls at the beach-before his dad corrupted him.  In fact when El is in Billy’s positive memories - we see seagulls . And possibly a seagull painting next to Jonathan -when at Lonnie’s.The k*lling of an animal for Chrissy, El, and Jonathan is probably indicative /symbolic of paternal ab*sers destroying their childhood innocence.

Analyzing the clothes in stranger things (narrative analysis)

*most of these details are quotes directly from the costume designers Amy Parris, kim wilcox, and others working on st. And a few details i will mention a lot of other fans have already noticed. Along with some clothing details I spotted myself and or my personal insights from specific clothing choices others or myself spotted.

Clothes reflects the Byers’ poverty (and at times is used to highlight their socioeconomic differences with the wheelers)

The show’s costume designer, Kim Wilcox, explained to Yahoo TV that the ghost busters costumes were a bit of a socio-economic signifier. 

“Will’s suit was actually built from scratch, whereas the other ones are different kinds of flight or mechanic suits that we were able to find out in the world.Will’s is my favorite because it’s a little big on him and kind of droopy. We thought about how these boys and their moms would have come up with these costumes. Some of the wealthier moms might have been able to go and buy a little suit to trick out, but Joyce doesn’t have the money to do that. Her family just kind of gets by with her one salary; most of their clothes come from the thrift store, or they rewear stuff they’ve had for years and years and years. We love the scene where she is hand-sewing the little Ghostbusters logo onto the costume that she’s made. Joyce has sewn on the Ghostbusters emblem, but you can see it’s a little bit messy, which makes sense for Joyce too. I like that about that costume.”

Paris (joyce vs Karen’s wardrobes): “Mrs. Wheeler can afford to be seen in a different outfit every time she appears, with many changing hairstyles and lipstick colors.Joyce on the other hand, who’s a single mother and has to pinch her pennies with two sons, is often seen wearing the same pieces of clothing day after day. She may even be seen in some of the clothing from her eldest son’s closet because she can’t afford to buy things for herself”

Paris (about Will’s clothes in s3) “ Will has ill fitting shirts to show that he’s growing out of some pieces that mom Joyce doesn’t have the budget to replace or hand-me-downs from older brother Jonathan.”

Byers’ hair: “Hindsgaul (hair stylist) and Ryder opted to have Joyce’s hair a bit longer in s3 , as a reflection of just how much taking care of things like a haircut isn’t top of mind for her right now.That woman has given up,” Hindsgaul says. “She’s just shoving her pain off.” She also points out that the whole Byers family is all rocking a very similar cut with all of their bangs, which is a real contrast to Wheeler household where everyone is very “done.” “When we first met her in season one, she pretty right on with the ’80s with a little bit of a mullet feel to it [her hair],” she says. “But now she doesn’t even realize. She can’t focus on stuff like that because she’s been through so much.” Her thinking? Joyce would trim up the front purely out of necessity so she could see—and not bother so much with the rest.“

These contrasts between the families reminds me of how in s3 Jonathan’s car is about to break down and it can’t even go past a certain speed limit (but jonathan just jokes he’s lucky it even moves) . But in the same season, nancy drives her brand new 1985 -model- car and cares so little she crashes it into bikes and doesn’t even bother to check for damage.

There is also a little clothing detail I noticed (that’s another contrast between the Byers and Wheelers) . In s1 we see Ted help Mike put on a tie mentioning to Mike it has to be a “little tight”. And right after this scene: we see Jonathan struggle to put on a tie (and then ripping it off in frustration-signifying his lack of a father figure that could have taught him how to do this when younger). So in s3 we see Jonathan’s ties are always poorly done and slightly loose around his neck. The same season Jonathan comments about how Nancy’s dad makes 6 figures and his dad “isn’t even around”.

El & Hopper sharing clothes illustrates their bond 

I’ve mentioned this in a past post (and i’m sure many others noticed as well). But there is 1 plaid shirt el wears that popped up 3 times in the show. In s2 we see hopper pat her on the head while wearing a tan flannel, and later in s2 she hugs it when thinking about him and missing him. And of course in s3 she wears this at the end of s3 in order to feel close to him (after his perceived ‘death’). We also saw in s1/s2 flashbacks el wearing Hopper’s blue plaid shirt.

Then we have the blue bracelet. This was originally Sarah’s hair tie which hopper wore on his wrist throughout s1-2. But he gives this bracelet to her in the last ep  of s2 to signify he accepts her as his daughter (which she continues to wear in s3). Before Hopper’s death we see them hold hands and the bracelet surrounds both their wrists .

Max also giving El a scrunchie may be foreshadowing of her future arc? (my theory)

We know  Hopper at the end of s2 gave El his (daughter’s) old blue hair tie after he got adoption papers for her. Signifying he thought of her as his daughter/family now. I wonder if max at the end of s3 giving El her green hairtie has a similar meaning ? Like she’s family to her now?

Both hair tie scenes are subtle and not even vocally brought up to the audience. We’re just supposed to notice and come to our own conclusions.Curious what it’ll mean going forward and the possible narrative implications.

It could also possibly hint at Max paralleling Hopper in the future. Both characters give El a hairtie, after the d*ath of a family member. Maybe Max (like Hopper) won’t cope well with the loss/de*th of a family member initially?She was awfully down in her last scene of s3 ( during Hopper’s speech). :(

(My Theory) Mike’s s3 clothes matching his parents reflects he’s trying to emulate their dysfunctional marriage - in relation to his romance with el.

(This is a detail the costume designers never mentioned )

We already see how el’s shirts connect back to hopper -and illustrates their connection (or Jonathan and Joyce sharing shirts reflects their poverty). So what about the fact that in s3 we see during his relationship with el- he wears shirts that resembles both ted and Karen’s ? 

 Specifically when the costume designers made Mike’s wardrobe in their words “ more mature/adult” in season 3 to reflect Mike’s desire to become more mature . I believe the adult clothes he’s wearing reflects his desire to mimic the 'conventional’ ( and loveless) romance of his parents. Which is why he’s wearing shirts from both of them.

Ted/karen are in a loveless marriage and as nancy said "never loved eachother’. But it was a marriage that was done because it was viewed as the logical choice and something that would look good to outside viewers. I believe every wheeler- karen, nancy, and Mike made the mistake of trying to be with the conventional romantic option (regardless of love). We are told karen got with ted because he "had money and was from a good family” (he was also an ex jock). nancy tries to avoid doing what her mother did- but initially she gets with Steve the conventional choice- rich, jock, and popular (despite not loving him). And Jonathan says being with Steve would be her making the same mistake as karen. However unlike nancy who is aware of the obvious fact her parents don’t love eachother and who tried to avoid the same fate. Mike seems to want to emulate his parents dynamic thinking that it is “normal” or “love”. In s1, Mike tells el to sit in the laz-e-boy chair ted sleeps in (and even tells El with a smile “you like that? that’s where my dad sleeps.” (And in s3 the lyric 'i should have walked away ’ plays as karen stares sadly at ted sleeping in the chair, regretting her predicament of being married to him). After fighting with el Mike says 2x “what did I do wrong?” Emulating how ted after fighting with karen says 2x “what did I do?” Also, Similar to stancy- which is paralleled to karen/ted- mileven is called “bullshit” (aka not in love). We also see how Mike is using the perspective of his parents marriage to guide his romantic choices. He tells Will (while wearing the yellow shirt) he has to get a girlfriend because they’re ‘NOT KIDS ANYMORE“ and that  getting a gf is a part of growing up (and they aren’t allowed to just never get gfs and live together as old men). Then when talking to el he tries using the "crazy” (romantic) line he initially used on Will . But when El doesn’t understand and he can’t describe his supposed feelings for her he just says “blank” (love) is “ SOMETHING OLD PEOPLE SAY”. Showing he views 'love’ with el (at least subconsciously) as something like his parents loveless marriage- its just what old people say. Its an act -a lie (to keep up social appearances and look good to others).Notice during the store scene (where the confession takes place) he never actually apologizes for lying to her-because his romantic confession is also a lie. He perceives his dynamic with El (at least subconsciously) to being similar to  his parents. Mike even says women-specifically El ‘think with EMOTION,  NOT LOGIC’ showing he doesn’t perceive his romantic relationship with el as something based on emotion but just the ‘LOGICAL CHOICE’ (and a part of becoming an adult-similar to his parents). 

Mike says after not apologizing for lying he has a (romantic) “feeling” a(love for) her- but again el called him out for lying about his “feelings” previously. It’s all lies. 

He thinks he has to have a gf/wife in the future (not only to look good). But, cause he views that as normal and the only “logical option” (and a part of growing up). And that somehow just ‘saying you’re in love and faking it’ like his parents is- how adults ’love’ . 

We also see when wearing the blue shirt he claims in the pool shed el is “the most important thing ” to him (which el ignores).  In contrast to this, Mike in s2 tells Will in the byers-shed  asking for Will to be in his life was “the best thing he’s ever done.”

Its also important to point out- what karen and ted were doing in the scenes with the yellow and blue shirt. ted in his blue shirt tells karen “well there’s someone for everyone ” (and puts an arm around karen) and karen sighs miserable she’s married to him. And in a similar blue shirt Mike tries to get back together with el- the pool shed/ hospital scene. And El implies Mike should stick with his “own species” (guys).While karen in her yellow shirt says “people tell you, you shouldn’t , you can’t”. And Mike wears almost the same yellow shirt  . And then he says to Will they can’t be together for the rest of their lives (and never get girlfriends). Cause obviously people would say that they “shouldn’t” and “can’t”. Heck Karen in s3 is stuck in a romantic relationship where she’s faking attraction to her partner-while she’s secretly into a guy named William . Wonder how that parallels to Mike???

I also talked about how the shirt Joyce and Jonathan share also reflects not only their poverty but their issues with romance, as well- here.

Lucas’ bandana , California inspired look,and karate kid attire

S3 had lucas’ style be more heavily styled by cali/Beach fashion according to Paris (to reflect him dating Max) . She also states Lucas wore a shirt that says in Japanese “karate kid” - because Lucas ’ is aware of max’s crush on Ralph machio (the karate kid). While his bandanna is supposed to be his dad’s - from the Vietnam War.

Hopper’s clothing evolution is supposed to reflect him slowly working 'outside the law’.

“When we first see Chief Jim Hopper, he’s clad in the tan uniform of a lawman, which Kimberly Adams based on Chief Martin Brody from both Jaws films. In Season 3, he’s long since eschewed his officer’s getup, since he’s been taking some time away from the force, and favors Hawaiian shirts in the vein of an '80s icon, Magnum P.I. This reflects his transformation from of the law to very firmly outside of it, which is a progression that’s been happening the entire series.”

Nancy going from her s2 preppy look to her more bold colorful outfits of s3 was supposed to reflect how dating jonathan has influenced her style (+ other Nancy easterggs)

(similar to Max influencing Lucas’ style).Paris states Nancy used to dress preppy similar to 'Molly ringwold’ when dating Steve . But later when dating jonathan she takes fashion inspiration from “new age” music - which jonathan is a fan of.

El wanting to look “pretty” in s1 had NOTHING to do with crushing on boys (my theory)

In s1 El is compared to Mike’s “sister” and “cousin” by Lucas/dustin. El even asks Mike if he’d “be like (her) brother.” In s2 Mike and El  are even compared to luke/leia siblings who kissed (via Mike saying it’s a trap to El ). One thing I never hear people mention is how El wanted/wants to be like Nancy.  Nancy in s1-2 wore a ballet slipper necklace .We then see El in s1 get emotional looking at a ballet box in Nancy’s room to make this connection. She wanted to be Like Nancy . We see in s1 el call Nancy “pretty”/later El calls herself “pretty” when wearing Nancy’s dress. She didn’t want mike to think she was “pretty” cause she was into him.  she wanted to be “pretty” in order to be like Nancy (who had what she thought was a normal life she was deprived of).El just wanted to be ‘normal’ !(And subconsciously a sibling to Mike).

El in s2 even calls the teddy bear (her mom intended for her) as “pretty”. Her wandering around the room that would have been hers if Brenner didn’t take her-is a direct parallel to her being emotional in Nancy’s room (and seeing what she nevef had).

This is why she cries and calls Billy’s mom “PRETTY” (while describing her attire-like her dress) . Cause El knows what it’s like to have a maternal figure stripped from you- similar to Billy.

Robin’s sneakers (that she wears all season) hint that she’s gay

This was mostly maya’s doing but she drew bo*bs/n*ked women on her sneakers and wrote “won’t go down in history but i will go down on your sister” . Also she just wrote on the shoes the word “t*ddies’. Pfft Maya .

Hey I'm sorry to bother you, but I was putting together a post about david harbour's cryptic instagram posts and one in specific where it is explained how rainbows work and then randomly "a pale stuffed yellow lion" is mentioned and I remember you had a post where you mention the lion symbolism in stranger things. I know we shouldn't put too much faith in what actors say about there shows, just wondering what your thoughts were

But i think this relates to my DiD theory (about Will).Please read theory first to avoid confusion.

The prequel novel established Psychics hallucinate rainbows when they use their powers.

In the prequel novel “Suspicious Minds” Both Alice and Terry when using their powers had hallucinations of a rainbow, Kali also formed a visual-allusion of sunflowers and a rainbow (implying all 3 have seen this rainbow, as well, when using their powers). And when Will was very young- he drew that ‘rainbow ship’-implying he has powers .

-Terry: “Spots bloomed behind her eyelids. Every color … as the sunlight turned to rainbows” ( p44-45), “The rainbow stayed with Terry for a long while, but eventually it faded and in its place: darkness. A pit.”(p. 48).  “streaks of rainbow appeared (p47)”, “Wavy rainbows seemed to radiate from her hand even once she stilled it. (p. 88). “Her eyelids drifted shut, rainbows and sparks flying behind them. (p. 89).

-Alice: (who sees visions of the future) : “Snarling, snapping monsters, rainbow lights playing in the air around them (p. 121).

-Kali using her powers: “field of yellow sunflowers grew up around them. A rainbow arcing over the golden tops.” (p. 139).  “He noticed she’d (Kali) drawn up there, a rainbow with her colored pencils.” Maybe he’d suggest that for the playroom” (the rainbow room we see in s2) (p. 298) 

In the show, Terry also saw sunflowers and would chant “sunflower, rainbow” over and over -and in s2 Will had a sunflower book. And we were told Will drew a rainbow ship.

As far as Lions:

Will in s1 had a stuffed female lion and El had a male lion.

“Chinese guardian lions-are lion statues that are common guardians of villages (*Hawkins) and even private homes (*Castle Byers and El’s bed room).  These lions can be a sign of protection of an individual or family. These lions are always depicted in pairs consisting of a male and a female, the female representing yin and the male yang. The ever-changing relationship between them is responsible for the constant flux of the universe. When, there is too great an imbalance between Yin and Yang, catastrophes can occur.”

I think this explains a very significant aspect of the show. When El was in great distress, she opened the gate- causing the disasters that later occurred in Hawkins. And after Will disappears, El appears to the audience for the first time. Hopper even tries to track down El, assuming it was Will who’s hair was shaved- because a witness said the kid with the buzzcut “could of been the Byers boy”. Mike even says “Do you really think it’s a coincidence we found her in the same place Will disappeared?”

The answer being ‘no’, it wasn’t a coincidence. We see as the show goes on, El who has never had a normal life, slowly gain normalcy in it. However, Will, at the same time, who was born into a relatively normal circumstances, has had his life become stranger and more entrenched in the supernatural. And as of the first 3 seasons, they’ve barely interacted (let alone bonded/are in balance)!They are imbalanced and because of this (symbolically)… catastrophe after catastrophe continue to occur!

When either Yin or Yang falls out of balance, they affect each other. That means they change their proportion and relationship to one another to achieve a new balance. There is normally a harmonious balance of Yin and Yang. However, they weaken — or consume — one another when they fall out of balance.”

“As an increase in one brings a corresponding decrease in the other, a correct balance between the two poles must be reached in order to achieve harmony”. “yin-yang represents the coherent fabric of nature and the mind (control of their psychic powers/ Will’s did & alters), and the interactions between the waxing and waning of the cosmic and human realms, and its harmonization (the real world vs the upside down/innerworlds)”

- Also…“Yin represents femininity, and water. While Yang represents masculinity and fire.”

The water and fire analogy is a consistent theme in the show. Will is always referenced with fire in both the comic and show . He drew his wizard character shooting fireballs in s1 and in the first ep he rolled the dice and yelled “fireball”, he had the ‘shadow monster ‘ exorcised out of him with fire, and in the comic he shoots a demogorgan and yells “fireball”. El’s element or ‘substance would be the opposite of fire, “water” - the sensory deprivation tanks are filled with water, the void floor is covered in water, she escaped the lab through a drainage pipe, was found by the gang in rain, looked at a reflection of herself in a puddle and cased ripples in it using her powers,  in s3 is shown sinking in water /using goggles.

*When Hopper saw Will’s lion plushie in the upsidedown he had a flashback of sarah with her tiger plushie.

Will even has a tiger poster (shown in s1 &2) which is associated with both Sara Hopper & Kali. 

Kali’s fav animal in the prequel novels is tigers. And Sara has a stuffed tiger (similar to El & Will’s stuffed felines).

In chinese mythology/culture: “The tiger is personified by the constellation Orion (interesting given Sara’s interest in space/blackholes). The tiger represents protection over human life (hmm?). Tiger charms were used to keep away evil and disease (that’s awful ironic if she died in the manner she did). In Buddhism, wearing tiger skins during meditations was believed to bring protection from spiritual interference and potential harm while exploring astral dimensions.”

Kali in ‘Suspicious Minds’ says…

“I was named after a goddess. She wore a tiger skin and was fierce in battle.”

Then Kali says to Alice (a women who can see future visions): “I love you, Alice. We can be tigers together.”

This parallel (in relation to Alice) is fascinating because Kali actually uses her powers to fake Alice’s death- and to trick Dr. Brenner, and allow Alice to escape. The allusion was so realistic, that Terry could even touch the ‘dead’ Alice. 

So the tiger symbolism could be a HUGE hint- that Sarah’s death was simulated and she’ll come back and travel the innerworlds/alternate dimensions of Will’s mind (as Hopper’s guide). Hopper about sarah “galaxies the universe-she always understood that stuff.”

* so yes… Sara will come back. Since alters can have simulated ‘deaths’ and then resurrect later.

Also… a little of topic, but there’s a lot of animal symbolism in the series

- the fox, the owl, and the bear. We see this in El’s room (in Terry’s house) and castle Byers/ the byers house (in s1).Will has a bear and fox illustration in castle byers and a stuffed teddy bear in his room (in s1) and a stuffed owl (in s2). While El has multiple stuffed bear plushies (in s2-3) . And Terry (in El’s room, in s1-2) had fox and owl drawings on El’s bedroom wall.

Foxes, bears, and owls are all associated with wisdom - aka ‘Will the wise’.

*El’s room at Terry’s house also has bunnies (a ref to how Lonnie made Jonathan-and prob Will kill bunnies on hunting trips). The white rabbit is also a ‘alice and wonderland ‘ ref (when El was at Benny’s an alice and wonderland song played called -white rabbit).

* Also the first time we see butterflies (associated with kali) is actually in s1e1 cause there’s a butterfly painting above the phone Will electrocuted.

blue butterflies usually represents many things- love, change or rebirth, passage of time, or  a malicious or vindictive spirit. These examples are prob the most applicable. Given that Kali is a goddess paradoxically associated with motherly love and violence ,giving freedom to children, and only killing demons in folklore.cough like those working at the Hawkins lab.

I Updated/revised this old post because i think it’s another solid did hint I wanted to talk about. David is (probably) showing us how his character is an alter of Will’s similar to Kali, El, Terry,and Sarah.Why he brings up the sunflowers/rainbows which are both connected to Will and the others I mentioned. I think it’s very possible sarah comes back -and Hopper while exploring the various ‘innerworlds’ of Will’s minds (like the Russian one, the memory scapes , etc ) reunites/ finds Sarah .And Sarah helps him . look at some of the season 4 movies:  In ‘what dreams may come” a guy with his dead kid explore a heaven like world influenced by a painter’s emotions.We also have the movie ‘inside out’ -which involves “memory islands” (distinct worlds based on a child’s memories) which are influenced negatively by the kid being depressed since she moved to California. The characters traveling to these memory islands are constructs of  kid’s mind -and 1 of them also has a guide helping them explore the ‘memory islands’.in  Inception a guy says he’s a construct of a guy’s mind and needs to help/protect him escape the many different Ievels of the dream world.Hopper about sarah says “galaxies the universe-she always understood that stuff.” And sarah being associated with ‘tigers which are supposed to be used for protection while exploring astral dimensions (could foreshadow this).” I kind of assume movies like inception, matrix, Truman show, total recall, the cell, enter the void, wizard of oz, Peter Pan , hellraiser 2, dreamwarriors, bill & ted’s bogus journey, and  welcome to marwen ,  also allude to this: because they involve entering simulated abstract worlds usually created from happy& traumatic memories / fears . And bladerunner 2044/total recall has the theme of false implanted memories… relating to hopper realizing he’s an alter and not in “actual Russia.” Before seeing the other segments of the innerworlds. Like in total recall- the bad ass spy is told all his memories:his wife/ years of marriage ,even his name, are just implanted memories. And she says “you’re life is a dream.” . And she says “you’re life is a dream.” Meanwhile (in assasain’s creed) an evil psychiatrist tells a character trapped at the facility -who can explore memories of another person (and who’s dad killed their mom-aka sort of like papa/terry ) that the reason she can go into a person’s memories is cause it’s her past life (aka El’s an alter). So I think that will play out in s4-5 somehow.

This hint also reminds me of when David played d&d and made his character  a fireweilding wizard (who’s powers appeared at 14),  has a ‘special connection’ to fin’s paladin, and doesn’t know who his dad is.

Thinking again about Hopper's curse

I said this in other posts. I don't think he's a bad man, but whatever he did in the past, whatever choice or mistake he made, it's haunting the story. My theory is that his "curse" is not just a tragic backstory, but one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.

(in every season he is associated with pigs, these are just two examples. Yes, Nancy's piggy bank too)

A police chase in Terry's message (plus donuts and coffee)

A possible hint in The Boroughs: SPOILER Hank Williams, the head of security, who looks a lot like Hop, died in a car crash and was brought back by Mother's powers. And there's a scene where he kidnaps two people and puts them in his car's trunk (Jon checking Lonnie's trunk...). Like I said, I don't think Hopper is a bad person. Maybe he was chasing a car, maybe he was trying to "save a kid via kidnapping", like Joyce says in S5. I don't know, but the fact that he feels so guilty means that something very bad happened.

Then they show the cops, not the man they shot in 2x01

And in this flashback, El screams Pop, not Papa

El spins the bottle before she reunites with Hop. She's thinking about Max, but when they played spin the bottle in S3, it landed on Billy and El saw him in the void. So even in this little moment they subtly included William. These kids are always connected.

Just thinking about “the silver cat feeds”. I always read "feeds" as a verb, but thinking about it as a noun, “feeds” can refer to video feeds.

Also, since "SilverCatFeeds" is associated with a computer program:

"cat" is a computer command. It's short for "concatenate", which means "to link or join things together in a series or chain". In the context of video, it would mean taking separate clips and joining them together so they appear as one continuous video. (Heavy emphasis on appear. Dr. Brenner clearly made some continuity errors.)

I'm also thinking "silver" could refer to a mirror, since silver was traditionally used in mirrors.

Like, whatever video feed we are being fed is a reflection of reality, but a distorted one.

Reaction to this post by @noreasontobeupset (because I already reposted it ; its a lot of math but also points to science/chemistry of ST. Go on and read it. It's worth it. Promise.) - I just became aware of something as I looked at it again and noticed the term copper translated to numbers.

Here I may digress a little but I think it's interesting nonetheless especially the links further down below. If you shorten COPPER to COP you end up getting the numbers.

The way the shortened version looks like felt familiar. But this could definitely be a coincidence:

In this post it's pointed out that the recorder has a two way coaxial speaker system.

Now, why should I shorten it even it's just looking similar and that this could easily be a coincidence? Which it could be. However my dumb brain made a connection, an association when I read the term copper....cop.

Why copper? Why cop? Why did this term for a metal and the slang term "cop" rang a bell? Because of Hopper. Hopper is a police officer, slang: cop. And his badge. I looked it up and fell of my chair.

Etymology: Cop is derived from copper which is British slang term for a police officer. As a matter of fact, the term copper doesn't have anything to do with the metal, in itself it means "someone who captures". There's a myth that it does refer to the metal because the buttons on the uniform were made of copper. (In a way these nouns are connected nonetheless?)- It's basically a homonym for both a police officer and the metal. But it still made me look up Hopper's badge. And who knows if the Duffers didn't make an association anyway since they are known for making "mistakes"...on purpose.

Hopper's badge: Number 380.

And his badge tells a story:

We do know that the Duffers equate letters to numbers through Max's own locker and them highlighting the A (= 1).

"Max" in numbers: 13 1 24

Max -> 1+3+1+2+4=11 (digit sum)

Max -> 13+1+24=38 (total sum) 3+8=11 in the answer to my original post

If you want to check for yourself, there's an online tool that translates letters to numbers and gives you the total sum directly.

And it appears on an old copper's badge:

380 -> 38 -> 3+8 = 11

And theres Hopper's seat is 38, the number is half torn (half of 38/Max is "missing"):

The link between Hopper, El and Max is subtle, it's a pumpkin conspiracy, it's in the quarry but it's there because you have, in a manner of speaking, Max's name on a copper's badge - badges are also called shields:

Hmm. A blue and yellow shield?

Max as a number in it's total sum 38 on Hopper's badge, basically reflecting patient room number 110, isn't only mirroring the year in which Will disappeared, '83 (so there's another connection between the two), it tells me....Max was always in Hawkins. She wasn't just added as a character out of nothing and because the Duffers like to create new characters. She always was part of the plot.

Someone allegedly drowned in the quarry in 1976, 7 years before '83? I wonder who fell into the quarry and what it has to do with Hopper.

He's a curse and this kid is cursed.

Actually, I don't really wonder. I think it's very likely that Max Mayfield was born as Sara(h) Hopper... I just don't have the full picture. And we may never get a full explanation but revelations and cues/hints, the latter to theorize for decades to come.

The connections are subtle like "Sam [is] good", an upcoming post that talks about the Sam Owens connection. But they exist.

I only hope that they put as much dedication and care into the final season and what they are building up to.

In the last post, we proved that Lucas is jumping timelines. I am so dumb, I should have clarified that Lucas is jumping CABLE timelines. Between movies and video games and tv shows. Duh.

He is a conductor on a train bridging gaps between realities. Remember how Max is racing the beam (the scanline on an arcade game) to defeat Mike? And how El is associated with sweets? And Mike with Trick or Treat? And Lucas' crown on his IOU logo?

Notice Will (thanks @anotherjlynn) and Robin discretely communicate that they are conductors too! (This is a reference to the tonal language aliens use in Close Encounters).

Anyways, Lucas is jumping through cables... like King Candy.

AKA TURBO. (And remember, Lucas is okay playing the bad guy for the greater goodd!)

When I noticed this, I remembered that all the media references I have found for Lucas had something to do with a scorned child star being forgotten and seeking revenge. Almost like their story had been overwritten.

King Candy gets both games unplugged. We know the prophecy says Lucas has to unplug Mike, and we know that the moral of War Games is not to play.

Either way, Lucas is traversing the multiverse stealing memories (back). We know he comes from another universe at some point in S5 because he remembers that now famous switch as a different color.

I think that ElMax and Byler endings will be quite bittersweet. I kind of think the ST universe is not real. If you haven't, go listen to Finn Wolfhard's wrap speech. It sort of implies he made up all of ST because he was lonely. Maybe Mike and Lucas are alternate universe equivalents of each other, and happened to cross paths, leading to all this nonsense. And, this explains why Max, Will, El, One are the same person. Lucas and Mike's imaginary worlds merged and shit got weird. They got to be best friends with themself, fall in love, but ultimately let go of a fantasy world? Idk this idea is fuzzy for me rn.

THE PLAN IS SIMPLE

Mike is trying to kill El. Why?

Recent ask reminded me of the clown connection. Mike is the Joker. BUT. He is also The Dark Knight. He is El and he is One.

Relevant background:

The Upside Down is Mike's Childish Understanding (MEMORY) of the World, brought into reality by Will. Will is communicating through code. The Lost Sister & The Cycle of War

I ended up having to make a video for this one since the scene had too much good stuff lol. I will copy paste the essay portion below for easier reading.

Essay:

The biggest threat to Joker is the Dark Knight, Batman, who is willing to look like the villain in order to protect Gotham's innocent understanding of good and evil. AKA the greatest threat to clowns (fear) is understanding, acceptance, and then action.

In Season 5, we see the themes from The Lost Sister (9/11, Vietnam) re-emerge as innocent Holly strikes her best friend across the face just like Henry struck the scientist. This cycle of violence and retribution (where even the good guys are bad) is a theme in The Dark Knight.

Holly's arc reveals how forced conformity is a war of its own. Children confronted with harsh truths transition from innocence to violence INSTEAD of to understanding. Because... how could they understand why the world is so cruel?

Holly's story is essentially a prequel to S1, showing us why Mike started manifesting the UD into Hawkins. Mike internalizes a violent reality, one implied in S1 to have been a truth / secret told to him by Will.

Through the demogorgons, Mike uniwittingly forces ignorant Hawkins to confront the truth about themselves. He recants a story told to him - filtered though his dnd-pilled, black/white view of the world.

Stranger Things asks the question - if children could reveal the truth about our world... what would they show us?

Mike's Clown Ego (the manifestor) wants to kill the Batman (the accepting ego who understands he can only control his own actions and, as he enters adulthood, choose to be a protector for others even if he can't save everyone).

If Kali (who represents Mike's belief that fate is written and nothing can change) convinces El (choice, Superman, The Dark Knight) to kill herself, then the Joker (Mike's latent desire to force the world to confront it's true colors) WINS.

Fun fact, Mike is also associated with the moon. He is The Man on the Moon who entrusts to Will the power to save him from himself. He does this because he believes Will can do it. Read about that here, here, and here.
