Simon's first week aboard The Hail Mary

I love broody grumpy violent until 5 years later Simon, but when I watch the movie and see how much he was willing to compromise as long as he JUST lives, even if it meant going back to prison, I really think he'd just be immeasurably glad to be alive. I also thought of in the phm book when Grace was all smiles after finding out he would live. Who wouldn't be?

More importantly, I've never done any artwork on that ship in the first place so

I'm crazy curious to see what it looks like though because I'm assuming it looks like my artstyle if you're asking lol

While digging around the storyboards of Iron Lung this clip for the intro showing AT-5 and the blood ocean caught my attention. First of all the design is harrowing, evoking the imagery seen later of the Red Eye in the Void.

From these images (brightened and contrast reduced to see the full sphere beyond the terminator) and area calculations we can tell the ocean only covers 3.6% of the surface and the 'moon' has an atmosphere, one that's a similar color to our nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere. In order to accommodate the ~100C surface temperature required for the blood ocean it would need both significant temperature and significant gravity to maintain such a warm atmosphere without a sun.

The remainder of the surface seems to be solid but very reflective, perhaps a metal of some kind which would add significant mass required for gravity and atmosphere and reflect heat back into itself. Another possible factor could be an extreme rate of rotation which would increase temperature and lessen perceived gravity at the equator but contribute to shedding of atmosphere much faster (but as they've likely only been around since the quiet rapture we may not have to worry about the atmosphere shedding any significant amount). @dessathealien I could easily see your white hole being located at the center of this Eye-like ocean and the way it parallels the being seen in the void is uncanny.

@negative-pressure-ventilator confirmed the map in the film uses meters for scale, and is 600x600m for the initial scan. The extended map for the cave system goes out to x:1100 and up to Y:950, the blood ocean has a diameter of at least 1km but likely much more.

I'm a bit too tired to do more calculations about this tonight but I wanted to get it out there for other people to look at!

Tacking on some of the AT-5 calculations I've had sitting in my notes:

Assuming that the temperature of the Blood Ocean is similar to the average human body temp (37°C/98°F), the minimum atmospheric pressure of AT-5 would be about about 7.1 kiloPascals or 0.07% the density of Earth's atmosphere. Any lower and the ocean would boil at 37°C. If Deadlymelodic's design for AT-5 is canon (and god I hope it is the eye imagery is fucking perfect) and the atmosphere is that visible from space, then I'd lean towards the atmosphere being a bit denser, maybe 30-50% the density of Earth's atmosphere.

Without the gravitational acceleration to work with or any reference for scale, it's difficult to say exactly what the size and density of AT-5 is. If we were to say that the Blood Ocean has a diameter of 1 km and that AT-5 has the same gravitational constant of Earth, then some very very rough math gives us a mass of like... 4.08x10^11?? The circumference would be like 17km though which is INSANE, so I think it's safe to say that the Blood Ocean is a whole lot bigger than 1km.

So many variables, so few answers.

There really does, honestly, cuz even in the movie, he proves he can problem solve with what's on hand. The whole sequence involving mappingthe blood ocean while keeping the rover moving shows that. He's just limited on resources and no one told him to read the manual. He had to test and deduce things mostly on his own, while also actively getting sicker by the second.

His thoughts on the Quiet Rapture also seem the most sound compared to everyone else's "every star in the universe is gone." How does anyone know that for sure? The idea of the stars being gone and the light we do see being from dead stars is already a known fact about the universe; anyone can say that, but how do the know for sure that ALL of the stars are dead? Let alone the blood moons: a moon is a planetary satellite. What are these moons orbiting if the stars and planets are gone??? We're dealing with an Eldritch horror, here, did the stars in fact all die all at once, including the planeta, or did a few space stations go missing because of a curious "god," hence the stars look different? Did the blood moons just appear because of the Rapture, or did this "god" make them for humans it was already playing with?

Simon's a smart man that thinks outside the box that everyone wants to put him in, he just never truly gets to utilize it.

Yes! Exactly! And he never gives up, which you can put on the indomitable human spirit, but also he's always got some sort of idea in that noggin. As a teacher in (mostly) maths of all years, imo the number one important thing is applying what you already know to things you've never seen before, because that's all math is for the most part, it just builds as you progress. I feel like Simon being such an adaptive and problem solving wiz would make it so that application is something he gets really quickly (usually this is the hardest part for most people in math!) He tends to look at the bigger picture and think outside of the box as you said, and that's exactly what you need to do in later stage math. A lot of people tunnel vision or forget about this one small part. Anyways, I love teaching, I love math, and I love how gifted Simon is and that Grace is a teacher, and I love them! Thank you guys for adding to the discussion on my art and I'm glad you liked it! 🫶
