The royal signet ring of the House of Durin is a massive piece of solid gold and heavy iron, used to stamp molten wax on official decrees. It is far too large for a Hobbit's hand. One evening, while Thorin is working late, Bilbo playfully slips the giant ring onto his thumb, where it immediately wobbles and slides off. Thorin catches it before it hits the floor. Instead of putting it back on his own finger, Thorin takes a soft leather cord, threads the heavy royal seal through it, and gently ties it around Bilbo’s neck. To the guards outside, seeing the Consort wear the King’s actual seal around his neck is the ultimate statement: Bilbo holds the power to speak for the King himself

In the Shire, cleaning your pipe out on the clean hearth is considered rude, but in Erebor, Thorin has a very specific habit. When he finishes a pipe during a difficult thought, he taps the ash out directly onto the dark obsidian stone of his desk, using the gray dust to trace temporary lines and tactical notes. Bilbo, initially annoyed by the mess, eventually learns to read Thorin's "ash notes." A neat, circular pile of ash means Thorin has solved a problem; a messy, scattered smear means the King is deeply frustrated. Before the servants can come in to clean, Bilbo always reviews the desk, reading the silent, dusty state of Thorin’s mind so he knows exactly whether to bring him strong coffee or quiet peace

In his extreme old age in Rivendell, as the power of the One Ring fades and his mind begins to slip, Bilbo's memories become chaotic. He often forgets the names of his cousins or what he had for breakfast, but he never forgets the oak leaf pattern. He sits on the balcony for hours, holding the old, dried-up acorn from Beorn’s garden, which never grew because he couldn't bear to plant it without Thorin. When Frodo gently asks him who he is waiting for, Bilbo looks out at the trees with cloudy, tired eyes and whispers, "I am waiting for the King under the Mountain. He promised we would plant it together, and he is very late"

When Bilbo is packing his things to leave Erebor after the funerals, he finds a scrap of parchment on Thorin's old desk, dated the night before the Battle of the Five Armies. It is written in Thorin’s heavy, rushed handwriting, and the ink is smeared, as if his hand had been shaking. The letter starts with a desperate, heartbreaking apology: "Master Baggins, if tomorrow takes my breath, know that the gold was a lie, but you were—". The sentence breaks off there, unfinished, because the war drums had started to sound. Bilbo spends the rest of his long life agonizing over that missing word, rewriting the ending of that sentence in his head a thousand times, but never finding peace

Hobbits run on strict, predictable schedules dictated by the sun and their stomachs. Inside the deeper levels of Erebor, where natural light doesn't reach, Bilbo constantly loses track of time, which deeply upsets his internal routine. Thorin notices this anxiety and tasks the royal mechanicians to build a highly complex pocket watch. The clockwork face is made of white pearl, but instead of numbers, it features beautifully engraved symbols for First Breakfast, Elevenses, Afternoon Tea, and Supper. The watch chiming mechanism plays a soft, warm tone that echoes the dinner bells of the Shire. Bilbo carries it everywhere, completely dependent on this mechanical piece of Dwarven devotion to keep his days grounded

Dwarven pillows are notoriously firm, often stuffed with wool or dense horsehair, which gives Bilbo terrible neck aches. To solve this, Thorin quietly sends a trade caravan all the way to the borders of the Shire with a very specific, confidential mission: to purchase ten sacks of the softest goose down available. When the feathers arrive, Thorin has them stuffed into a rich, dark-blue velvet casing embroidered with the crest of Durin. He places it on Bilbo's side of the bed. When Bilbo sinks his head into the luxurious softness, he laughs and asks how much gold it cost. Thorin merely pulls his heavy blanket up and grunts, "Gold cannot buy a good night's rest for the one who keeps my mind clear"

The head tailor of Erebor is driven to near-madness by Thorin’s sudden and bizarre demands. The King under the Mountain, known for his strict military style, suddenly insists that the stiff gold embroidery on the collars of his shirts be removed and replaced with soft velvet. He also demands that the heavy, clanking metal buckles on his everyday tunics be exchanged for quiet wooden buttons. The tailor thinks the King has lost his mind, until he spots Bilbo resting his head against Thorin’s chest during a quiet moment in the council room. The soft adjustments were entirely so that Bilbo wouldn't scratch his face when leaning against the King

In the deep winter, the stone floor of their private terrace garden gets so cold that the roots of Bilbo's imported Shire herbs begin to freeze. Bilbo is devastated, spending hours covering the pots with spare coats. Thorin solves this using Dwarven engineering: he orders the construction of a small underground hot-water pipe network that runs directly underneath the stone floor of Bilbo's terrace. The system uses the natural volcanic heat from the depths of the mountain to keep the soil warm all year round. When Bilbo steps outside and feels the rich earth radiating a soft, summer-like heat against his bare feet, he looks at Thorin in absolute awe. Thorin just grunts, crosses his broad arms, and says, "I tolerate no freezing things in my home, Baggins. Especially not your plants"

The lower archives of Erebor are filled with ancient, dusty scrolls that haven't been touched in hundreds of years. Whenever Bilbo goes down there to research family lineages or history, the heavy dust makes him sneeze constantly. Thorin, who can hear Bilbo's high-pitched hobbit-sneezes from all the way down the corridor, always interrupts his important meetings to storm into the archives. He doesn't say anything romantic; he just grumps about "reckless hobbits ruining their health," lifts Bilbo up by the waist like a sack of flour, and carries him out into the fresh air of the balconies. Bilbo swats at his shoulders and calls him a stubborn brute, but he always smiles when Thorin places a warm woolen scarf around his neck

Dwarves prefer massive, heavy iron cutlery that feels like a blacksmith's tool in a Hobbit's small hands. Bilbo constantly struggles during formal dinners, almost dropping his soup spoon out of sheer exhaustion. Noticing this, Thorin orders the royal silversmiths to craft a special set of lightweight, beautifully balanced cutlery for Bilbo. The handle of the main spoon is shaped like a twisting beanstalk, and the silver is thinned down to perfect hobbit-proportions. When Bilbo blushes and thanks him, Thorin grunts that he "simply didn't want the royal tablecloths stained with spilled soup anymore"

Dwarven bakers make dense, rock-hard travel bread and heavy crusts designed to last for months in deep mines. Bilbo, who misses the fluffy, golden, yeast-risen loaves of the Shire, views this as a personal tragedy. After weeks of complaining, Bilbo takes over a small corner of the royal bakery. He imports proper yeast and teaches the grumbling, heavily bearded royal bakers how to properly knead and proof soft Shire dough. When Thorin is served a warm, fluffy roll with melting butter for breakfast instead of his usual rock-hard ration, his eyes widen in pure delight. The bakers try to take the credit, but Thorin knows exactly whose soft hands saved his kingdom from bad bread

Hobbits have a natural habit of keeping useful things in their pockets twine, pebbles, pipe-cleaners, and dried fruit. Thorin, who wears heavy royal robes that traditionally have no pockets (only loops for weapons), finds this fascinating. One evening, while reviewing trade logs, Thorin complains that his hands are cold. Without looking up from his book, Bilbo reaches into his waistcoat, pulls out a beautifully polished, warm river stone he found earlier, and drops it into Thorin’s hand. Thorin stares at the smooth stone for a long time. The next week, Thorin orders the royal tailors to secretly sew deep, velvet-lined pockets inside all of his majestic fur cloaks, specifically so he can carry small things Bilbo gives him

Dwarves drink heavy ales, strong mead, and thick black coffee that smells like burnt coal. Bilbo’s delicate chamomile and mint teas are considered "hot grass water" by most of the iron-willed lords of Erebor. However, whenever Thorin suffers from a severe sore throat or stress after a long council meeting, he secretly slips into Bilbo’s rooms and demands a cup of "the grass drink." Bilbo always serves it in a massive stone mug so that if any other Dwarf walks in, it looks like the King is drinking heavy liquor. Thorin will sit there, sipping sweet chamomile tea with honey out of a terrifying skull-shaped mug, looking completely content

Dwarves never go barefoot; their boots are heavy, steel-toed, and lined with thick leather to protect against sharp stones. They find Bilbo’s bare, furry feet both fascinating and deeply concerning. For the first few months, Thorin constantly panics that Bilbo will stub his toes or step on sharp iron shavings in the lower halls. He tries to order custom leather slippers for him, but Bilbo refuses to wear them, complaining that they stifle his feet. Eventually, they compromise: Thorin orders the stonemasons to meticulously polish and sand down the floors of the royal wing until the cold stone is as smooth and soft as river silk, just so Bilbo can walk comfortably
