God and Enoch

Day 7 of Devotional

Respond: Imagine how Enoch went about his walk with God. Could you do something similar?

Enoch was taken from earth by God, while everyone else died of a natural death. Enoch must have really loved God, truly because I can’t imagine any other reason why God would just pluck him off the earth and into Heaven.

I don’t know if I can do something similar. Life back then was a lot simpler than it is now. But  that should not be my excuse. God is worthy of all my attention all of my effort, all of my praise, and all of my time; yet I am still hesitant to do such things, why?

Because this world also demands a lot. I have pressure from my family, and I need to respect my parents, for that’s what Jesus did while He was here on earth. School life, worry about grades and GPA’s not dropping, and so on and so forth. Right now I am in the process of applying for Grad school and the school.

It is very difficult not to worry about things, even though God tells us not to worry and be anxious. It’s human nature to worry, but I tend to feel guilty for worrying because I should be trusting God instead of fretting over temporary things. Prayer and going to God’s word is the best way to deal with worry, I know this yet I don’t do this. I use something to distract me so I don’t have to think about it.

But I think I should just run to God more instead of using worldly distractions to take me away from my worries temporarily. That’s one step toward being similar to how Enoch walked with God, but I am aiming to be more like Jesus so I’m one step closer to being more like Christ.

Consequences of Sins

Day 5 of devotional God is furious with the snake, Adam, and Eve! Just reading today's passage shows that God hates sin and that He is a just God. But there is another characteristic that is evident, He loves them still. He made clothes for them (Genesis 3:21). That is not what I'm going to focus on today. The author of this devotional always asks a question before diving into the scripture. The question was: what in the world today do you think makes God most angry? My answer to this question was Human Trafficking. But according to the passage it is sin. When Adam and Eve sinned he was angry. He disciplined them like a Father would to a disobedient child. He even disciplined the serpent. He cursed the serpent to maneuver the way it does today. Eve's punishment was having labor pains when she gives birth and have her husband over her (like today's society men are "over" women). In the beginning those two were equals and were working together to keep the garden lush and green. Adam's punishment was to labor in bad soil. He was pushed out of Eden and God made a flaming sword tp guard the tree of life (which gives one eternal life), because the consequences of sin is death. There is one verse that I believe is taken out of context fairly frequently: Genesis 3:15b. This verse is talking about Jesus! Jesus is beaten and scorned first before defeating sin itself (which is what the serpent represents). Application: remember what makes God angry

The Fall

Before reading the scripture for this devotional the author asked a question: imagine of what you desire most in life. Now suppose that it isn't God's plan for you. Can you see yourself turning away from your desire and towards the way prepared for you by your Lord? This is a hard question to answer. I want to say that I will but if that situation comes up, will I really? I want to be married someday and have a family of my own, but what if that's not a God's will for me? This is where Adam and Eve disobeyed God and decided to eat the fruit that God told them not to eat (Genesis 3). When the two of them heard God walking in the garden they fled and hid themselves from Him (Genesis 3:8). When I sin I don't go straight to God, I runaway and hide just like what Adam and Eve did. That's what children do when they know they're in trouble, they hide from their parents. I know I have done that as a child. When God questions the two of them Adam points the blame to God's wife and Eve points the blame to the serpent. It is true that the serpent deceived her and that Eve gave some of the fruit to Adam, but they are responsible for their own actions (Genesis 3:11-13). Every Christian is tempted by the serpent, every single day. But our actions are of our own free will. We can choose to act because of the temptation or not. The free will that God has granted us doesn't mean that we should blame other people for our own actions. Application: When tempted pray for Holy Spirit to intervene

Garden of Eden

Day 3 of the devotionals

So for this devotional it focused on the, well Garden of Eden. This was the original paradise that God created for His creation. Now this was all before the fall of Adam and Eve. These two were naked and not ashamed (Genesis 2:25). If anyone was naked in front of someone they would feel ashamed, well at least I know I would feel ashamed. 

I have studied this passage before with my college group, and one thing that we noticed is that Adam was asleep when Eve was being created, and I mentioned that in Les Miserables, when Cosette and Marius meet in the yard, Marius mentions that he is in dream, while Cosette says that she’s awake. Whoa. 

Anyways, moving on. I believe the purpose of this devotional was to remind His children of His beautiful creation. Living in the city I don’t see much of nature, unless I actually go and seek it, like how I should be seeking God everyday! I have venture out to the parks and see some “nature” because some of the “lakes” and “ponds” were man made. 

I do like nature, but I’m so much of a city girl that I don’t even like stepping on mud, and that’s what Adam was made of (Genesis 2:7)! Let’s just say I like seeing it from afar, or if there’s mud i will avoid it at all cost. I don’t mind walking on grass, but I do mind sitting on it. I really do admire God’s creation, especially the sunsets that he paints everyday, and the sound of rain, the lightning streaks, the sounds of birds chirping. I also want to see the Orcas and Dolphins being freed from captivity, even though it will be hard to rehab them for living in the wild. 

If we don’t take care of God’s earth nature will definitely disappear, and I don’t want that to happen for the next generation. I don’t want to see a world where people would have to buy “bottled air” in order to breathe in clean air. Let’s take care of God’s creation for He has provided us this environment so we may be fruitful and multiply. 

Application: take part in taking care of God’s earth

God the Creator

Day 2

For this devotional I learned a lot more about Genesis 1 than just about the fact that God created everything. The author of these devotionals noted that other characteristics of God was revealed in Genesis 1.

For example, I noticed that God provided for every creation that he made. When He made man He provided for them (v. 28-31). I know that God provides, yet sometimes I forget that simple truth, or I don’t trust Him, or have enough faith to trust that He will provide for me at the right time.

This was truly a great reminder that God provides for me and all His children even though we sin and don’t trust Him. From the beginning it is evident that He loves us. He took joy in His creation (v. 20-23).

I love seeing His creation around me (especially snow). I even look for lightning streaks in the sky when a thunder storm is happening. I used to be afraid, but nite I’m fascinated by it, because it’s God’s creation.

Application: appreciate God’s creation and to trust in Him more

New Year New Devotionals

It’s 2016! That means it is time for new devotionals! I started this new “plan” on the Bible app by Youversion and I can’t wait to see what God will be teaching me this year! 

Day 1 

This was based off of Psalm 1. It talks about the way of the righteous and the way of wicked. I know I definitely need to be delighting in the word of the Lord, but sometimes it’s tough to be motivated to read His word every single day, even though I love to read. 

It’s a shame that I love to read novels more than the Bible or I love to watch YouTube videos related to Psychology instead of reading the Bible. As a Christian I should have that desire and yearning to read His word no matter where I am! 

I want to become more like Christ every single day, I want to be the light, for He calls His children to be the light of the world. But I can’t be the light of the world without the Bible to guide me. My application from this devotional is to meditate on God’s word, and continue to apply it daily.
