Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird by Frida Kahlo, 1940. Surrealist artist Kahlo frequently used symbolism in her works, especially in her self portraits as a way of expressing her personality: the thorns that prick her neck show the pain she feels in her life and marriage; the butterflies at the top of her head represent resurrection; the dead hummingbird is a Mexican charm that it supposed to make one lucky in love; the monkey is a symbol of lust and temptation and the black cat symbolises bad luck.

Pictured: On August 14, 1945 — VJ Day — a jubilant sailor plants a kiss on a nurse in Times Square to celebrate the Allies’ long- awaited World War II victory over Japan. Originally published (not as a cover shot, as most people assume today, but as just one in a series of “VJ Day victory celebration” images featured in the middle of the magazine) in the August 27, 1945, issue of LIFE.
