Late Night Thoughts: Book 2

Alright, I think most TWST fans know where this is going. Book 2 sucks so much ass that book 7 looks mildly tolerable, and that’s bad considering Octavinelles entire mess in that book. Ask my friend, I was so fucking done and almost thought about quitting.

Ironically I think book 7, for all its faults, might have done book 2 better than book 2, though that opinion does change on the dime. But I don’t like complaining generally (online) unless I can offer a genuine attempt at a solution — but I think I have one!

My main problem with book 2, (besides the useless mystery plot but the plan I have here changes that anyway), is how the story bends backwards, upside down, sideways, and still somehow manages to be hanging off a monkey bar, to be a Lion King allusion.

The characters are quite complex in Savannaclaw, and none of it really gets explored. I get it, early days of TWST, didn’t quite know how to write it yet, understandable. But there’s an easy fix here, at least on a conceptual level — what is one of the most impressive things about Scar?

THE LION FUCKING WINS. Not at killing Simba, obviously. But if you classify his goal as “Take over pride rock by killing Mufasa,” HE WINS. FOR TEN YEARS. That’s insane for a villain, especially a Disney one — if they win it’s for like, a day most, usually not even that much. Sometimes they don’t win at all.

Imagine that as the concept for book 2 — showing off his intelligence because he can win, when he puts his mind to it. Maybe even keeping it for some time. I don’t know the ins and out of spelldrive or exactly how to rework that plot, but focus less on the stampede and more coming up with a plan that actually makes some fucking sense.

Imagine whatever plot Leona has, and he & Ruggie (being our more vocal stand in for the hyenas, but the NPCs can chip in too) are kind of basking in their glory, not even pretending. Not trying to hide, not trying to cover their asses anymore, thinking they’re in the clear. Everyone knows they did it, but they can’t do anything about it (like what I’m sure some of the lioness’ thoughts must have been in the movie).

Jack can then be our Simba or Nala stand in here, coming up from the cracks to knock them down. He is our moral figure in Savannaclaw (and most of NRC tbh), so very easy stand in here. He’s the blindspot nobody expected because wolves are supposed to be loyal. (This could even delve into Jack more, expanding his character or at least his inspirations. I still think he should be based on the lionesses but who’s listening to me?)

Then Leona overblots because his victory has been taken from it, and even if only subconsciously he knows it’s because of himself. And then we can go into the whole backstory thing, which I thought didn’t work too bad. If you want to make it even worse, Ruggie could sort of backstab him here just before the overblot too, if we really want a Lion King allusion.

Again I don’t know exactly what to make the plot, sorry about that. But basically I think we gotta cut the Malleus mess because it just makes Leona look stupid, and it feels really out of character as you learn more about and him the story goes on. Like — Malleus can fly. And teleport. And — you get the idea. It makes Leona look rock hard dumb and he isn’t. Not that he can’t hate the guy, I think that’s hilarious, but just don’t make the plot to lowkey kill him,

Also, I think Chekas end there can stay unchanged. That’s hilarious, best part of book 2 and gives Leona some more character. The only thing I’d have changed is him trying to subtly manipulate Cheka away from Farlena, even if it doesn’t really work because the cub has A+ child naivety and manipulation blocking skills, purely on accident. I feel like with the kid being such a soft spot instead of trying to use and discard him like Scar did, he would try to keep him, for lack of better wording. As stated previously though, those scenes are the ones with the least work needed.

TLDR; Book 2 should be based on the fact Scar lowkey won, and how the plot can be reworked from there. (Oh and make Jack have some Lion King inspiration).

Book 7.5 Shitpost

1. SILVER IS OFFICIALLY ADOPTED, YOU DID LILIA!! WE DID IT FOLKS, WE CAN ALL DIE HAPPY!!! (/j on the last part)

2. I don’t know if we should be letting Lilia raise kids though because… just ugh. I can’t explain it and alls well that ends well I suppose. Just don’t… yeah.

3. But Lilia becoming a teacher? Peak cinema. I need to see that. Please dear gods let that happen, it’d be so funny. He’s the teacher the kids all adore and some of the parents enjoy and then the rest absolutely bitch about but he’s too good and doesn’t quite cross the line enough to fire.

4. Ah yes Malleus, Lilia is a friend. Totally not a father figure. Not a father figure you escaped your castle for. Totally not.

5. Kalim is trying so hard?? I feel mean laughing but if I don’t laugh I’ll cry so it’s fine.

6. JamiZul shippers being fed a little bit, not like they need it that bad.

7. I love the freshmen so much, I can’t explain it properly. Maybe it’s just cause they feel pretty real? Well besides the fact they aren’t swearing, but like yeah.

8. Leona not wanting to mess with the Octotrio alone is so real, like that’s a shit show I’m not messing with.

Alright, Devs and writers alike, if you wanted an event for Deuce to bring his boyfriend (Epel) home, you could’ve just done that. It’s barely the subtext anymore. It’s legit just the main text — you’re telling me those two HAVEN’T kissed? You’re lying, get off my lawn!

Also my wonderful Silver & Ortho are here and it’s grade A. Also Dylla is here and she’s objectively hot as hell, no I won’t take questions. As always when these mother characters come up, I’m instantly turning to their kid and going “So is your mother happily married (or single in Dylla’s case) or just married?”

We’re watching an Odyssey adaptation and we’re at the part where the suitors die, one student is cheering a lot though we’re all cheering a little bit and my teacher looks like he zoning out with a funny expression

And this man responds relatively deadpan, “No, this is just my revenge fantasy for everyone named in the 3pst3!n Files.”

So. Hi. You know how Yuu in theory could be anybody? Yeah, and I had the entirely unoriginal idea of making them a child. And also mute because who doesn’t like making their characters suffer?

Meet Mx. Alecto Fortune!

First image (or at least it should be, cough, cough) is a somewhat old timey British inspired school uniform for Alecto. That is sort of very extremely loosely inspired by Auroras cottage outfit (see, sleeves) & Prince Philip’s outfit (see, collar) The second image is technically the “Ramshackle Dorm Uniform” or just her generic outfit. I swear, I did not mean to make them look like Leah and/or Philip, I hadn’t even looked at Philip yet and only briefly spoiled for Leah, it just happened man.

Before I go into the relationship chart for our lovely Prefect, I wanna give a little info dump.

Oh, and here’s some more art to preface it, if you don’t like text blocks.

Basically all due to my friend (and also due to characters having their own free will I swear to the god[s]), Silver is their main relationship in the story. As soon as Alecto needed someone to protect them from the rampaging Grim & the creepy Headmage, she ran right to Silver. (This is due to purely the good, protective vibes radiating from him, they’ve watched their Disney movies!)

While Alecto is technically the Prefect and one alive student in Ramshackle, Silver is basically a Ramshackle resident with how often he stays over. I’m still trying to figure out how exactly to make the main story work, because I think it’s freaking hilarious if no matter how hard Alecto & Silver try, they just… keep being there??? when overblots happen, but trying to do that without making Silver seem irresponsible. He does not joke around about his sibling, he is that Brooklyn 99 meme about having the cat for a day and a half.

They’re a very artistic person, drawing a lot and loving different environment. But this also applies a lot to writing, leading to the Newspaper/Photography club. (If these club actually exist in canon, imagine like the programs were middle schoolers will help high schoolers with things).

She is generally well behaved but still prefer to have fun a lot of the time, and prefers to try to keep people company and sane more than anything else. Well, also observing about magic, but who wouldn’t in this situation?

Alright, now relationship chart! Little explanation, the inside (non arrow end) are the true feelings, and the outside (arrow) are what’s portrayed to the world. Take Sebek for ex: especially near the ending books he is highly concerned and another brother like figure for Alecto, but he isn’t going to admit that. (Also I forgot to give him the freaking family color, imagine that’s there pretty please [:)

Can you tell which dorm she’d be in if the mirror actually sorted them? Yeah, I think we all can. Very messed up but actually not found family vibes there. Some of these relationships are not fully cemented, like Jamil I had no clue what to do with, so these are up to change.

Oh, and anyone with the fear on the inside is (generally) an exception to the above rule as farther the relationship goes on the less likely they are to feel the fear, but for those people it’s always there to varying degrees.

I knew she was going to get along with Floyd, despite Alecto not being that chaotic, I just knew that as soon as he tried to squeeze or chase them, she’d be right along for a game. (It’s also hilarious to have them be actively like besties with Floyd and then horrified of Jade, it’s just funny. I like torturing my characters, can you tell?)

Ortho I think is a connection out of being younger siblings but also just generally friendliness, as I think a lot of students are nervous around Ortho and Alecto would just be like “:0, someone else fun!” Also now that I’m thinking about it, Ortho could definitely help with Newspaper and Photography club.

How did Rook get cemented as one of their closer friends? I CAN’T TELL YOU, IT JUST HAPPENED, SAME WITH THE FASHION DESIGN, IT JUST HAPPENED!!

Also, main parent/teacher figure is Trein. That’s where she got their school uniform actually, because none of the main uniforms fit them so Trein dug out one of his daughter’s old uniforms (also explains why it’s outdated). This makes Alecto more comfortable around Trein and allows her to open up, so History very quickly becomes her favorite subject, not to mention they’re already pretty good at it.
