Falling into the historical hetalia fandom and coming out changed irrecoverably is a canon event

Drawing explanations ⬇️ Rastatt: Not much to say, I think it's pretty clear South Italy and Spain have a close relationship in canon.

Ghent: hc that it's difficult for Canada and America to HATE each other. Yes, they get irritated and angry, but due to being isolated together, growing up side by side, and experiencing conflicts all the time because of forced proximity, they decided to separate their personal and professional lives. Thus, it was hard for Alfred and Matthew to fight each other during the War of 1812 (they still did, because at the end of the day their nations will always be the priority). When the war ended, they couldn't be more relieved.

Ausgleich: Austria and Hungary married in canon, so...

Customs: idk about Leich and Swiss's backstory in canon, but I like their characters and did light research into their history. Apparently, this treaty was very important in developing their economic and diplomatic ties.

V-E Day: hc that while England and France used to hate one another (they always fought throughout history), but by 1900s, they were so used to the other's presence (they'd never admit it then) that they couldn't imagine life without them. Since they were SO close to being defeated during WW2, at the end I imagine all the "pretending to despise you" shit flew out the window, and they were just so glad the other was alive and kicking.

Mauerfall: Also very canon. In the manga, Ludwig was a bit ashamed of himself for being put together, while Gilbert was more poor during their reunion. Also, Prussia got punished for WW2 heavily despite Germany playing a larger role in the conflict, so Ludwig prob feels guilty about that. And ofc, hc that Ludwig was worried at how USSR/Russia treated Gil, so he's currently breaking down :)

One of my favourite headcannons is that the Harringtons are less bad parents than they are ex boarding school kids with a strange idea of the child-parent bond.

All of the gang and especially Nancy when they were dating seem to have this impression of the Harrington’s as neglectful and Steve has just never noticed enough to correct them. Steve’s parents travel a lot, but Steve has a cook come twice a week to fill the fridge, a cleaner once a week to do the whole house, a gardener and a nanny all the way up until 15 when he finally talked his parents out of it.

He’s had a home recreation of the boarding school experience and the Harrington’s feel like such involved parents when they call twice a week and see him once a month rather than just the holidays.

Even when he’s pissed at his Dad for making him get a job it’s more of a normal parent reaction to not let your kid bum around without being either at school or employed and a normal kid response to be pissed about it.

Obviously the party knows nothing about this and so when they come round to Steve’s and his parents are there they’re utterly confused. They’re so normal and affectionate and not at all what they expected. Sure Steve’s mom is trying to marry him off, but her boy is such a lover and she wants grand kids, and his dad is a little tough but his son is a natural leader and he just wants him to have the work ethic to back that up. It’s completely baffling. Along with the fact Angela has never really forgiven Nancy for breaking her son’s heart it makes for a very awkward interaction.

The Harrington’s sort of just don’t fit in Indiana, they’re both hotshot trust fund lawyers, who since they have so much family money just spend most of their time picking interesting cases and working for random non-profits. They’re incredibly well dressed and have very regionally non-specific accents and they’re the sort of passively intimidating people you can’t really picture in a relationship let alone with a child.

Not to mention they’re mostly only updated on Steve’s life by Steve, so they keep asking after Tommy and Carol (a nice boy but easily led and an impressively cutting girl, Carol has a marvellous talent for finding people’s weaknesses that lawyers find impressive natural talent). They seem to know about Barb dying in the pool but have no idea who Billy Hargrove is, or even the fact he existed. Robin is of little interest to them until they find out about her talent for languages, and then they’re offering to put her through some advanced courses in return for her working at one of their offices for a while. Polyglots are so hard to find apparently. The kids don’t seem to register at all outside of Phillip making a comment about responsibility.

The party is sent home with cake (made by the cook for their homecoming, “such a sweet thought but really they could never eat it all themselves”) and the dawning realisation that Steve A) is far richer than they thought and B) that they don’t know a lot about his personal life. Either way when they come around 3 days later the Harrington’s are gone and the house looks like they were never there at all.
