Relax, The Yeti is (Probably) Not Real

First off, yes I know that is a picture of a Wampa. There happens to be more photographic evidence for a fictional creature from the fictional ice planet of Hoth than for the Yeti.

I don’t really understand the appeal of cryptozoology research in 2013, but some “new evidence" for the existence of the Yeti has been making the rounds in the popular press recently. Apparently new DNA evidence indicates that the Yeti may simply be a cross between a polar bear and brown bear.

At first this seems sort of reasonable; the habitats of the two species overlap and there are documented cases of successful hybridization in captivity. But it turns out that brown bear/polar bear hybrids look like… well… bears, not like snow monsters. There is also a very real possibility that the genetic results were inadvertently (or not so inadvertently) corrupted.

Really, this whole thing is just silly. The “discovery” of new monsters probably shouldn’t be the focus for Oxford university geneticists and definitely shouldn’t be reported as serious news by the press. I would normally argue that this kind of thing undermines the whole of science. Maybe I’m just burnt out from writing entirely too much yesterday, but I can’t imagine anyone will give this more than a passing thought.
