Black Like Me: An Exploration of the Word N███

When artistic expression and societal issues collide, you get a spectacle like Black Like Me: An exploration of the word N███.

On Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 10:30 am and Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 7:30 pm the Cultural Arts Center (CU) on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus is hosting the performance of Black Like Me. The Tuesday, February 4 showing will be free and only for Montgomery College students while the Wednesday, February 5 performance will be the public performance.

The Cultural Arts Center says:

Black Like Me: An Exploration of the Word N███ is a multidisciplinary work that explores the reverb of a single word in a global community. It considers the effects of the word, all its permutations, its history, and its casual use in Hip Hop culture. In collaboration with two of America’s leading Black media-design technologists and local activists, it asks if it is possible to redefine a word that was intended to belittle a people. Black Like Me combines physical, verbal, visual and sonic language to tell five narratives and perspectives in a unique way.

Award-winning dancer Jade Solomon Curtis will be the artist in focus during this performance.

Students can RSVP through the portal on the Cultural Arts Center’s website for the Tuesday performance and tickets for the Wednesday performance are available online now and at the box office (which opens 2 hours before a show starts).

MC Faculty & Staff: $10.00

General Public: $15.00

National Career Development Month at Montgomery College

November is a month of big change. It is a month of color changing leaves, earlier sunsets, and dropping temperatures but why not get to hone in and experience an exciting change like a new career with knowledge gained in this year’s Career Month at Montgomery College?

Montgomery College is pulling out all the stops by hosting a Career Month at the Germantown Campus. The college, knowing that November is National Career Development Month, hosts an annual series of events that promotes, and encourages career development for its students.

This week, on Thursday, November 7, there will be an event focusing on students looking to gain some more insight on career trajectory in the medical by meeting with advisors from University of Maryland College Park. This will be held to talk about admission and course requirements for various medical majors.

The 12 events hosted throughout the month will give students many opportunities to grow professionally by holding seminars where students can learn to improve their resume writing skills, polish their etiquette, meet with advisors from nearby universities about career projection and even learn about possible careers in their respective majors.

Things got going early with the kickoff events being hosted on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30 in the HS Bookstore Lobby and HT Lobby, respectively. These kickoff events gave students the opportunity to meet with members of the Germantown Campus Career Team. The team members are comprised of staff from various departments on campus.

The other 2 campuses are hosting their own set of events for the month but their event calendar was not posted online so updates will have to be sought out by seeing the posters for the events posted around each campus and seeing updates on all of the college’s media outlets.

90 Minutes to Break Down Structural Inequality at RV Campus

Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus will be hosting a game event on Wednesday, October 23 in the Theatre Arts Building (TA). The game in focus will be Factuality. This interactive board game created by Natalie Gillard has reached and impacted thousands of individuals since its creation.

The game itself lasts no longer than 90 minutes and touches on several social issues through the eyes of 8 different characters. The 12 categories in which they discuss issues (listed on the game’s official website) are:

racial discrimination

religious discrimination

redlining & gentrification

gender discrimination

(mental) health discrimination

race & gender pay gaps

incarceration & bail disparities

sexual orientation discrimination

education inequity

class

accessibility

intersectionality

The board game has participants discuss amongst one another, learn from one another, and teach each another about structural inequalities that the game’s characters face. The key to this being successful is that each participant picks a character that is different from how they see themselves. The 8 characters differ greatly because they are of multiple genders and of various ethnic backgrounds. The racial groups that these characters fall under are Asian, White, African American, and Latinx. The website notes that the characters also has various sexual orientations and different religious affiliations as well. Factuality discussions will be structured by the characters’ “series of fact based advantages and limitations based on the intersection of their race, gender, sexual orientation, faith, and class.”

SHaW Center Looking to Give Students a ‘Brain Break’

Since Midterms are upon us, Montgomery College’s Student Health and Wellness Center for Success (SHaW Center) is hosting a Brain Break event for students to find some time and space to relax.

Each campus will have its own day for the event starting on Tuesday, October 22 at the Rockville Campus between the Theatre Arts (TA) and Student Services Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Germantown campus will host its Brain Break the succeeding Wednesday, October 23 in the Bookstore Lobby (which is located in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HS)) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And lastly the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus will host the Brain Break on Thursday, October 24 in the Charlene R. Nunley Student Services Center (ST) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The SHaW Center hopes that this Brain Break will help students “de-stress and declutter” their minds by getting them involved in a multitude of activities and they also hope to teach students mindfulness.

This is one of many events that the SHaW Center is holding throughout the year to promote community wide health and wellness. Recently they had flu shot events at all 3 campuses where students could get free flu shots.

Partial Parking Garage Closure at Montgomery College Rockville Campus

Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus has kept the seventh floor of its parking garage closed since it’s opening in January of 2017 and as of right now, the college does not plan on reopening the floor. The full function of the facility has been stunted because residents from the neighborhood adjoining the parking garage filed a complaint with the City of Rockville about how bright the lights were and this prompted the college to close the floor until further notice. The complaint was placed because the residents were not fond of how brightly the building's lights were in some of their backyards.

The City of Rockville then instructed that the action of closing the floor take place. Since then, the college has taken action and worked with Carl Walker Associates and Chrisman Construction to have dimmers installed on the top floor lamps in the garage (which are currently  installed) to make sure that the lamps were placed according to the building plan’s design. 

Following the floor’s closure, Montgomery College, the City of Rockville Planning Department, and the Chief Building Official met about resolving this issue. Other technology like commercial building lighting control systems from brands like Wattstoppers and motion activated sensors are being discussed and researched for implementation to further regulate and decrease the brightness.

The college is awaiting verification and approval from the City of Rockville on its alterations to the lamps and their brightness before opening the floor. This opening will occur after an inspection is done by the City of Rockville.
