Eight weeks had gone by fast. Possibly because Mary was always on the move during her recent trip. I just need to get away for a while, she had told her friends. She hadn’t specified how long she would be away, or where exactly she was going, mainly because she wasn’t sure herself, but also she wouldn’t have told them if she knew. Marlene was the only one she had told the truth to. I have to look for Drew. I’m not an idiot, I know there’s barely a chance, but I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t try. What if he’s out there? I shudder to think how that would have come to be, but…. what if?

Her friend was honest with her, wishing her luck in her search but sharing her opinion that Mary wouldn’t find her brother. At the time, that made Mary mad and she blew up at Marlene. She knew it was a futile attempt and that Marlene was likely right, that Drew was gone too, but her emotions were more in control at the time and Mary didn’t want to accept that there was no chance at all. She didn’t want to accept that she was the last of her family left alive. After a while, Mary sent Marlene a post card from Washington D.C. (her childhood home) apologizing for being an ass and letting her know she was alright. At least as alright as she could possibly be.

Mary had toured areas of the United Kingdom that Drew might have known people in or had visited before. She did the same in the United States, starting with their birthplace and then traveling further west to see places and people Drew knew. A few times she thought she saw him, but it was always just wishful thinking and a similar looking man. Every night she laid in a motel room after a fruitless day of searching would leave her feeling empty and heartbroken.

The trip gave her a lot of time to think, possibly too much, although in some ways she really did need this escape. But all things must end, and it was long past the time Mary should have come home. She didn’t want to worry anybody, but most importantly there was still a war to be won. A war she could never abandon, no matter how much it had already taken from her.

Mary had been back for two days, and her luggage still sat in the small foyer of the MacDonald cottage. She had caught up on sleep, feeling insanely jetlagged from her flight home. Now in the light of the late morning she awoke and went to her kitchen to make a cup of tea. The tea cup was only in her hand for a few seconds when a loud caterwauling caused her to break it in her grasp. She dropped the pieces, which shattered more when they hit the flagstones, and she whipped her wand from her pocket. A caterwaul charm was one of many protections she had put on the house when she was home, and someone had tripped it. Moving slowly toward the door, she told herself to stop trembling, but her body wouldn’t listen. She peered through the window panes, careful to stay out of view. Suddenly, she saw them, and immediately sighed as she put her wand down at her side. How’d you already know I was home? she wondered as she unlocked the door.

Minerva was carefully watering Mary’s garden, the same way she had been doing for the past two months as a Highland neighbour, when she heard the door unlock behind her back. She knew about the protection charm and had decided the enclench it since the beginning, in case Mary ever came back from her trip and couldn’t move or step outside. She was also supposed to remind the girl to put more protection charms since the one she had was barely above the bare minimum. A child could unlock it, really.

With a last Aguamenti in mind, Minerva turned around, wand at the ready in case it wasn’t Mary, and watched as the door opened. You never knew in these days.

This is why he never took the knight bus. It really was good for nothing other than a good laugh after long nights before learning to apparate- but with the moon the night prior there was really no way he was getting back home without splinching himself after his attempt at grocery shopping for dinner. Remus had only sat down for a moment, needing to collect himself before braving the sharp turns and hard brakes coming to him. He found an empty bench to occupy, plopping down as he quickly dozed off, groceries falling to the ground as his head fell back and he fell asleep. It hasn’t been a long nap, only a few minutes before the sounds of a familiar voice woke him up with a start, what was left of his food for the week shattering at his feet as he ran a hand down his face.

“Bloody fucking hell.” He mumbled, trying to take in his surroundings as he ran a hand over hood face, struggling to sit up. “ I’m awake, don’t get your knickers in a twist. I’m up.”

Very few people liked the knight bus, it was a common fact in the Wizarding World. Somehow her wife hadn’t gotten the memo, which is how Minerva found herself taking unrequested bus rides whenever they went to London together. The ride from London to our cottage is my favorite one, her wife would say in that sweet voice of hers and here they went.

So when an orange rolled and popped against Minerva’s feet, she looked up from her novel, turned around and spotted its origins. Ah, I see. She thought to herself. She closed her book, tapped her wife’s lap and rose from her seat, walking in Remus’ direction. The boy looked exhausted and it saddened her to wake him up, but she couldn’t stand to watch him slopped that way. “Should I transfigure a pillow out of that orange?” She asked as a greeting and regretted it a bit at Remus’ reaction. Of course she hadn’t meant to startle him.

Minerva tuttered instantly at her former favorite student’s words. “Language Remus, my ears are not a toilet!” She admonished in more of a fond than outraged manner. She silently waved her wand and the groceries that had fallen on the floor started to go back inside their bag, perfectly tidied and cleaned. Somehow the bus’ turns and stops didn’t seem to bother her as she stayed up, but she still cleared her throat and indicated the bench. “May I sit with you for a while, my stop is far from close.” She hadn’t missed the red dot on her calendar indicating the full moon last night, no. She had never missed one in all the years she had known the boy. What she missed were the cold mornings at Hogwarts, in the safety of Poppy’s careful hands and her classroom’s comforting walls.

Which reminded her. “And Poppy has been asking about you by the way, you should send her an owl sometime. That would make her happy.”

After the heat wave the rain in London has been the absolute worst for the past hours, which is enough to send the whole city in a flurry of tension. People yell at each other, drivers honk for no reason and tires keep screeching to fight the drowned roads. There’s electricity in the air, as if something or someone is suddenly about to go off and explode. Like a balloon popping when it’s filled with excess.

Minerva can feel it all. Her hairs rise on her arms and in the back of her neck as soon as she apparates, in the back street of the café Narcissa invited her for their rendez-vous, far away from curious eyes. Quick steps take her inside the building and she’s instantly welcomed by the coolness of the place. Once she adapts her senses to the location it doesn’t take much time for Minerva to spot her former student and, after taking her order and receiving it in the minute, she calmly heads towards Narcissa’s table.

“Hi!” she greets while placing her glass of red wine on the table, shaking off her hat and sitting down. A deep sigh escapes her lips as if she hasn’t had the time to take a breath in weeks. “I know we talked about getting tea but I’ve had the longest day, so if you would be so kind to act as if I’m not drinking wine at 5 in the afternoon, that would be sweet.”

The right corner of Minerva’s lips curls up slightly at her former student’s remark and sudden apparition. “Please Lily, that’s giving Rita Skeeter too much credit.” Minerva replies and slows down in her steps to match Lily’s, her eyes roaming over the Daily Prophet building the younger witch just pointed at. There’s movement at the windows, people coming in and leaving, the smell of ink and fresh paper as always lingering in the air when you walk around that spot.

She has never been inside, but it’s not something she particularly regrets. Not with the way they have been handling some topics recently.

“I would say a toad is more appropriate, don’t you think?” Coming to a stop at the end of her sentence, Minerva looks at the other witch with a discreet smile and readjusts the foulard around her neck. “Anyways, it’s good to see you Lily, I heard the news, congratulations are in order!”

open starter location: Obscurus Books in Diagon Alley

The new term was about to start in a few weeks and Minerva was enjoying her last moments of free time to run a few errands, already feeling busy by preparations of the first day of school. She had just bought herself some potion supplies and was now at the bookshop looking for a manual she had lost during the holidays. Somehow it had completely disappeared from her bookshelf and even her wife had no idea where it went.

As she was looking around the store, she noticed a cover that caught her eye on the shelf of new arrivals. In a bright pink font, Gilderoy Lockhart’s second book was placed.

Memories of the boy flashed in her head and most of them were far from being fond. The boy had been close to a nuisance for the Hogwarts' whole staff, always seeking attention and unable to reach a stance of modesty, which Minerva had a hard time tolerating. Out of respect she had tried to read his first book but had stopped after a few pages, mostly because it was completely full of shit. With a few steps she reached the shelf, took the new book in hand and turned it around to read the summary.

Somehow, it wasn’t hard to imagine the kind of quality this second copy was about. “How can someone accept to publish that bullshit?” she asked to herself in a whisper, disconcerted, not really paying attention to the bustling around her as she stared at Gilderoy’s dumb smile on the hardcover.
