She followed Emmeline out of the cover, looking around to make sure they were clear, her hand gripping her wand in her pocket tightly. “ You sure? It’s not too far I can probably make it. And if I don’t at least I’ll be leading them away from you guys. “

I don’t know many that’d kill a child.” She glanced back from where they came. “Alright, I saw we try to get outside their perimeter, if we can figure it out, and I’d like to say close for Doe and Grant, but if you can get away, you can.”

Marlene rolled her eyes a little at that, “ If they want to scare muggles they should read a history book first, Scaring muggles usually leads to pitchforks and bonfires, certainly not the fun kind. “ She sighed a little for a moment as she sorted through her thoughts, frowning for a moment, before nodding “ Sounds like a plan. I’ll need to find a way back to my motel room, I was a bit of an idiot and left everything but my wand in there. “

She smiled at the cat and scratched behind his ear, she nodded, “ Yeah, it’s the same for me, I’m by myself so often it’s easy to forget I’m not the only one. “

Oliver watched as his target pulled out her wand. He chuckled lightly. “You really think that’s going to get you out of this predicament? And they say rebels have no sense of humor.” He said leaning further into the chair that was supporting him.

“That does sound slightly tempting, but my love of my job comes before my love of tobacco and sweets.” Oliver said running his free hand through his short, dark brown hair. If it was even possible, his smirk seemed to grow. “We both know you know the answer to that question Marlene.”

Marlene’s hand shook slightly, though she blamed it on her lack of a proper meal rather than fear. She bit her lip for a moment and pushed her hand through her hair. “ No, what I think is that you’re grossly underestimating me. “

She let a small chuckle leave her lips, “ That’s good, because I only have two cigarettes and half a cupcake left, “ she said with a nonchalant shrug. Her breath caught slightly in her throat for a moment, “ What are your orders? What is it you’re supposed to do with me? “

⎯   ❝  Emme nodded along in agreement with what Marlene said. At least they could put eyes everywhere she wasn’t sure about Death Eaters as a whole. If they were sending in groups to match the amount they believed in the area everywhere they heard that there would be people there, there was no way they could keep up. “At least not skilled Death Eaters,” she said, thinking out loud. “They could be pulling nearly anyone into the ranks now just to fill the space. Let’s hope they avoid children.”

        After another moment or two she glanced in the directing they’d left for the hiding place from. “D’you think the one following you’s moved on?” She honestly hoped so. She wasn’t sure how much patience the Death Eaters had if they weren’t finding the people they suspected were there and lost sight of virtually the only lead they had in the area.

“ The further we get from magical towns the worse they’ll be, any high standing death eater wouldn’t want to spend time in a muggle village. They’d think it was beneath them and stand out like a sore thumb, “ Marlene said simply, “ I like to hope they wouldn’t, but I also hoped they wouldn’t take over the country. “ She took a deep breath and listened for a moment, she couldn’t hear a sound but her and Emmeline’s breathing. “ I think so. I haven’t heard anyone moving around in a while and nobody can be still for this long. “

He honestly wished it was as simple as a problem as that since Harry messed with that cat’s tail regularly and they were best friends. “No, it’s more because I resent him since he’s not a dragon and he can smell resentment.         “Of course! We’d love to have you join us.” He smiled and started back for the blanket where the food would eventually be set up. He looked over his shoulder to make sure the other two were following. “And truly that’s not me answering for Lily. I know she’d insist.”

” I think a dragon would’ve made a wonderful pet. Though probably not very discreet, not child friendly either. Cats are better for being on the road so much I think, “ Marlene laughed, following him towards the blanket, Harry slightly in front of her. “ Thank you. It'll be good to rest for a while at the least.  “

⎯   ❝ Emmeline couldn’t remember the name of the town if Grant or Doe even said. They went to a lot of places that remained nameless for them. As long as they could get what they wanted out of it, the name didn’t matter. The location didn’t really either. She wasn’t even sure how far from London they were, she wasn’t sure how far from her mother and other family they were. But either way, clearly Death Eaters could figure out where they were. She was surprised they didn’t send more. Maybe there wasn’t enough to waste on a hunch.

        Still there were at least four and that was enough to overwhelm one, overwhelm two. “Yeah,” she whispered with a nod. “They’re not exactly quiet as it is.” It wasn’t exactly an insult, but if there was a fight, they’d know for sure. Doe and Grant didn’t take anything quietly. “We just got here, maybe that stirred trouble. We needed supplies and were hoping this town was safe. They’ve been spreading their reach to more and more muggle towns.” Which made sense. They wanted to find all of them and muggle towns use to be the prime places to hide.

Marlene had lost count of how many towns she’d stayed in, how many woods, she’d barely managed to keep track of how long she’d been on the run, if motel rooms didn’t have calendars she doubted she would know at all. Running into Emme, in what could’ve been Marlene’s fifteenth or fiftieth town, was probably one of the biggest coincidences of the century, if they weren’t amidst a war she wouldn’t need to rely on coincidences to see her friends.

“ I get the feeling that this town doesn’t get many tourists, me showing up a few days ago and you coming now must’ve tipped them off, “ Marlene sighed a little, “ Soon enough they’ll have eyes all over, though maybe they’re spreading themselves a little too thin. There’s a lot of small towns and villages, and I doubt they’ve got enough death eaters to be constant in all of them. ”

Oliver chuckled lightly, shifting his weight. Marlene Mckinnon was his target today. He wasn’t sure how she had evaded him for so long. He felt that he had gotten close so many times and had almost cornered her. Though, he felt satisfied that he had finally got her where he wanted her.

Oliver smirked at her comment then noticed her hand placement. The faint outline of her wand could be seen through the fabric. He pointed his wand at her, ready to fire if needed. “Do you really think that’s going to help you right now?” He said confidently trying to hold onto the upper hand.

Marlene wouldn’t let herself be scared, it wasn’t how things were going to end for her, she wouldn’t let it. She didn’t have a plan, Marlene wasn’t good at making plans and sticking to them, so most of the time she just didn’t bother with them, she’d follow her gut and get out somehow. It had worked for her before it would work now.

She pulled her wand from her pocket, her grip on it tightening though she kept it by her side, just hoping she would be quick enough when the time came. “ Well I would hope so, I don’t have much else to help me. Unless you can be swayed by a couple of cigarettes or a cupcake, “ she said with a slight shrug, trying to sound nonchalant. " How long have you been following me? "

⎯   ❝ This felt normal. The sort of normal that didn’t suggest there was a war going on. The reminders were that hey were meeting in a random field and completely by accident. He also liked to think if there wasn’t a war going on, they’d all see each other much more frequently. There would be parties, those that had kids would bring them together, and the adults would watch after each others children for them while they took a night away. There was still a hope for that reality James liked to believe.

         “Coincidences are always good. I’m glad you decided to walk as well,” he agreed with a smile. That’s really how they ran into others besides Sirius or Remus anymore. He sometimes wondered if the rebels should just for some mega group, but then that would put them all in one place. “We’re both good. I’d be much better if our cat didn’t insist on clawing me in my sleep, but I might’ve earned that.”

        “Lily’s just gone to the car to get the food.”

Marlene hadn’t smiled this much in too long; not properly smiled at least. There wasn’t usually much for her to smile about these days, seeing James and Harry was more than enough to put a grin on her face. She couldn’t wait for the days when it was all over, where she wouldn’t have to be surprised when something put a smile on her face.
