My first Kubyenka project is finally done!

Meet Toadyenka -

He's a little wonky, but that seems appropriate. Badly stitched, eyes too big, comically long finger on each hand....etc.

Pattern: Frog & Toad by Dot Pebbles - if you've ever thought of trying but being scared, don't be. It's so well written and any issues were of my own design. Stitching up the belly was the hardest part because I haven't learnt to mattress stitch on anything flat, let alone shaped. I winged it.

Jacket was freestyled. But iirc, the back panel was 20 stitches with a colour change in the middle. Front panels and sleeves were 8 across. It's a double mosstitch to get a padded effect. I did them all the same height but would shorten the sleeves next time, these had to be folded back.

Yarn: I will have to find.... but i also don't recommend it as its cotton so was murder of my fingers....

Janosh Uher’s (lack of) interest in women and sex, p. 4

…with core members of Devil’s Pack as a comparative background for analysing Janosh <part I> <part II> <part III> or ao3

The main-story’s character interactions and majority of background dialogues either implying Janosh’s interest in any kind of sex or indicating lack of said interest, were covered in previous parts. This part will examine the few background character dialogues I omitted before but some of following content is in fact based on additional notes I made while researching source material. I tried to look at presented information from a wider angle, including external factors that could have influenced Janosh's behavior.

Keeping in mind that my observations are just one of possible interpretations, here comes finally the last part. Thank you for reading!

Undoubtedly, Janosh’s main interest - and source of comfort - is food. He likes both cooking and eating and as was mentioned in the previous parts, food is his first association that comes to mind, which led to misunderstandings between Janosh and other characters. 

Henry and Janosh’s misunderstanding was about sausage (for the full dialogue, please check out chapter 1)

Henry: Please tell me you’re talking about food…  Janosh: Yeah, I talk about sausage, what else? Janosh’s sausage… Ah, I see! You think I means big, huge salami in my hose, hey? Haha! He is not for just anybody! Me, I am decent Christian! 

But as background character dialogues showed, such misunderstanding also happened between Janosh and Adder, who were established as long-term, inseparable friends:

Janosh Uher: Christ, I starving! I give arm for nice piece of pork…  Adder: I could go for something sweet right now. Janosh Uher: Hmm, nice piece… Honey or plum? Which you like? Adder: Come on Janosh! When do I ever talk about food? Janosh: Ah! You talking ‘bout…?  Adder: Exactly. There’s nothing sweeter than a roll in the hay with a beautiful girl. Janosh: You poetic soul, hey? Adder: Fucking bard! I'm horny as a buck!

Three things worth to note:

Adder is surprisingly patient with Janosh not following his sex-driven train of thought. His frustration (if we may even call it that) went only so far to point out he rarely talks about food, which was all Janosh needed to assume it's something sex-related. There is no insult, no joke or additional commentary on Adder’s part that Janosh always thinks of food first and foremost.

Secondly, Janosh misunderstood Adder’s true intention twice despite knowing well how sex-driven his friend is. The first time is understandable as “something sweet” could refer to many things (though Polish’s “schrupać” [eat/munch] is ambiguous term that can be used as flirtatious sign of physical or romantic interest in other person). However, once Janosh considered the “roll in the hay with a beautiful girl” as poetic (romantic?) desire, it forced Adder to speak as directly as possible - “I’m horny as a buck!”.

Finally, this is one of three examples that may suggest Janosh is not always comfortable with naming sexual act openly (the way Adder and Hynek usually call it fucking/shagging when interacting with Henry). Here, he said “you talking ‘bout…?” and never finishing the sentence, leaving it for Adder to confirm that indeed, he alluded to sex.

Similar impression comes from background dialogue between Janosh and Adder:

Janosh: Hey, you still drunk or you get drunk again? No way to know. Adder: I’m not drunk at all! Janosh: For sure one of us drunk. And not the Janosh! Adder: Well yes, maybe a little, but I'm feeling just fine. Janosh: You say that last time. Then you puke on my horse. Adder: Shut your trap, you bastard! Janosh: Why you mad? You no get pokey pokey long time, hey?

in which Janosh used “pokey pokey” instead of any direct name for sex.

Or background dialogue between Janosh and Kubyenka, post-Italian Job arc:

Kubyenka: […] That’s more than Adder’s got. Janosh: Adder? He is fucking angels and laughing at us right now! Kubyenka: I reckon he’s fucking demons, most likely. Janosh: From behind! Holding them by horns and pokey pokey! Hu hu hu!  Kubyenka: Kurwa! Neubiegaj! Hu hu hu!  Janosh: Ha ha ha! Kubyenka: Scheisse… I miss him. 

In which Janosh insisted that in the afterlife, Adder is fucking angels and/or demons, but when he was describing in details the imagined sexual act, he used again “pokey pokey”. As was mentioned in the previous part, this is not the first time Janosh talked about someone else’s sex life. However, as much as his and Kubyenka’s dialogue is much more detailed than when Janosh and Adder were wondering about Henry and Rosa, Janosh was still not presenting said details in a really crude way. He said Adder is doing it “from behind!” instead for example, Adder is fucking demons in the ass.

Thus we have three separate examples in which Janosh picks less direct, vulgar vocabulary or even avoids naming sex. My first impression was to assume Janosh doesn’t always feel comfortable with describing sexual activities. Although I still think this is true to Janosh’s general characterization, it occurred to me there is an additional layer to mentioned above interactions, as all happened with two people Janosh was, canonically, the closest with: the inseparable comrade (Adder) and brother-like figure (Kubyenka).

This led me to believe Adder and Kybyenka created a safe environment for Janosh in which he doesn’t need to be vulgar and can freely use “silly” pokey pokey. And not only that, but as was mentioned in previous part, it is the same safe environment that allowed Janosh to talk about homosexual/anal sex in inappropriate way (joking in Polish with Adder how doing from behind hurts and gets shitty in the middle of enemy attack or joking with Kubyenka about dead Adder fucking demons from behind). 

The above interactions with closest companions feel different from Janosh’s optional dialogue with Henry when the young man was just a stranger sent by Dry Devil:

Henry: Maybe I can talk the bailiff into letting you go. Janosh: Yeah, sure. While you doing that, tell him to send wife here to suck my cock, hey? 

And mind you, once Henry saved Janosh’s neck and they became friends there is a noticeable shift from vulgar suck my cock to big, huge salami in his hose and Adder’s not keeping his little gherkin in hose, so we have two separate examples when Janosh is avoiding direct name for penis by using food-related euphemisms when around befriended Henry.  

At the same time, we need to acknowledge that Janosh can be as rude as his companions and the more angry he is, the more vulgar he becomes. His harsh reply to Henry was fueled by how miserable he felt due to hunger and threat of the death penalty. He angrily called Adder a dick when the man’s behavior pissed him off during the battle of Maleshov (again, dire and stressful situation). So it is not like Janosh is a shy person too afraid of cursing or being vulgar, yet in the company of friends he doesn’t seem pressured to go out of his comfort zone to “fit” between more sexually driven characters like Adder.

Thus to understand Janosh better, I think we need to take into account the possibility of peer pressure and even performing masculinity to fit or make the right impression. Granted, we as fandom look at Devil’s Pack mainly through interaction of Dry Devil, Janosh, Kubyenka and Adder -  three of said men are established as close friends (Adder-Janosh-Kubyenka) while despite his bad reputation Hynek does in fact care for his people’s safety and lives. Because of that it is easy to assume Devil’s Pack is some sort of family unit. However Matthew brings a different impression of Hynek’s mercenary group, one that was full of people who joined because they didn’t have anything better to do and who would either drink themselves to death or kill each other if Dry Devil wasn’t around anymore to keep everyone in check. There is also a short-tempered Bohuta easily provoked into fight. And as we learned from Bohuta, Hynek himself (and Kubyenka for the matter) was prone to provoke people

Bohuta to Henry about Hynek: You provoked me! It’s clear you were cast in the same mould as the Devil. He would also never shut up until chairs started flying. 

As was mentioned in the previous part, Hynek could deliberately pick on someone, if he didn’t like something. The letter was best seen in how he interacted with Henry when Hynek had some sort of fixation on Rosa - from putting pressure on the young man to throwing at him insults and nasty comments. And let’s not forget that a great number of NPCs was freaked out by Hynek’s behavior during his short stay at Suchdol (before game events) while Zizka - Hynek’s own close friend - described Dry Devil as “an angry, dangerous murder” who can also “be as bitter and angry as a rabid dog”. In general, Hynek is “someone you want on your side but never against you” and someone “better not to fuck around with”.

Despite Kubyenka being nostalgic about the old days with Devil’s Pack, he himself admitted that Dry Devil gathered “a band of criminals”

Kubyenka: You gather a band of criminals and then you are surprised they cannot be trusted?

This hardly sounds like a close-knit group or safe environment. Additionally, Janosh doesn’t seem to be close with other men outside of Adder and Kubyenka, as he did not care for Ranyek’s death (in contrast, Adder blamed himself for what happened) and made fun of Bohuta’s choice to atone for his past sins with little sympathy for a man that few weeks ago lost his beloved brother. Arguably, Janosh may not be even that close with Hynek either, as the game doesn’t give us many examples of those two spending time together the way Janosh did with Adder or Kubyenka. I’m aware of one scene after the attack on Maleshov when Janosh and Dry Devil were seen together alone making fun of Brabant,

while the majority of their interaction either happened with other people around or offscreen.

And even then, Janosh and Hynek sit close to each other only(?) once, during the siege of Suchdol as usually there was Kubyenka or Adder or someone else separating them. Frankly, Janosh sounded to me more excited to meet Zizka again

Janosh: Zizka?! That mad bastard here? Now that is something to look forward to!

Janosh: Devil? How he get free, hey? Last I know, he rotting in chains.

so how close the two truly were is up to debate.

Out of six members of Devil’s Pack that Henry had a chance to talk with (Hynek, Adder, Janosh, Kubyenka, Bohuta and Matthew), four enjoyed the life of boozing and fucking and weren’t shy about that. 

How toxic or dangerous could it be living with a rough crowd of Devil’s Pack if someone got on the wrong side of the Hynek or didn’t fit, we may only wonder. The game however gives us some insight into how people “not fitting” were treated. For example, Herbalist Barnaby - a canonical gay man - was physically attacked by a group of men for his lack of interest in women and ostracized by villagers to the point Barnaby, for his safety and peace, lived in solitary.

When we met Janosh, the man was already ostracized. He looked like Cuman (enemy), his speech was queer which only adds to the “he is not one of us” vibe.

Kubyenka: He was having the time of his life until recently! Wine, women and song! But now he has problems because people take him for a Cuman.

and

Kubyenka: I said, he looks a bit like a Cuman. He speaks almost like we do, but in a queer way.

Granted, before the conflict between King Wenceslas and his brother, Janosh probably didn’t face ostracism on the same level as he is now. But we have no idea when he joined the Devil's Pack nor who joined the group during the military conflict. With people who were described as criminals, who were prone to violence and could be on purpose nasty if they didn’t like something, we can’t cross out the possibility that Janosh and some members of the Devil's Pack weren’t on good terms and his minimal/lack of interest in women or sex and food-focused behaviour could be the object of ridicule.

The latter especially could be a factor in why Adder and Kubyenka are Janosh’s closest friends as none of mentioned men were trying force Janosh to have sex to “man up” or made fun of his habits like collecting herbs and mushrooms (something that Janosh is doing around Devil’s Den on daily basis, while both Adder and Kubyenka can be spotted visiting the near bathhouse). But it may also explain the earliest interaction between Janosh and Henry and why Janosh, beside understandable stress of the situation at hand, had the sex-related vulgar riposte.

Henry introduced himself as someone sent by Dry Devil to collect Hynek’s men. One of the dialogue lines leading to a more peaceful resolution of the problem (talking to Bailiff to free Uher from the stocks) literally made Janosh ponder how this young man found his way into Hynek’s service.

Janosh: You soft in head, hey? Where Devil find you? You remind bailiff, he come hang me right away!

If we agree that members of Devil’s Pack were criminals and a rough crowd at that, then it makes sense Janosh naturally expected Henry to be this sort of man. Which could push him to use vulgar, cheeky and sex-related language to better fit the image of a "tough" mercenary. But once he truly befriended Henry, Janosh acted as he did around Adder and Kubyenka (i.e. avoiding saying penis/cock in sexual context)

The same way Janosh’s speech pattern may change depending how well he knows his interlocutor, I think we can agree that the way Adder talks about sex changes depending on whether he is speaking to Janosh or others.

For example, when Adder is greeting Henry or is greeted by the man, he says things like:

Adder: Good evening, Henry! Time for a shag? || Bry wieczór, Henryku! Ruchanko?

or

Adder: Drinking and fucking as always! || Chlańsko i ruchańsko, jak zawsze!

or

Adder: As always! I could fuck until I drop! || Jak zawsze! Rżnąłbym dupki, aż bym padł!

or

Adder: Damn! I'd love to fuck. || Psiakość, pochędożyłbym.

or 

Adder: Fuuuuuking! || Ruchaaaanko!

Please, note: English language does not do Adder’s speech justice. The translation usually goes with either fucking or shaging. Meanwhile Adder is using much more colorful vocabulary. In the above six examples alone, we have five different ways to name sexual activity (ruchanko/ruchańsko/ruchać, pochędożyć, rżnąć). 

Adder is straightforward when he is talking with Henry about sex. Meanwhile, when Janosh is around, Adder can be seen using euphemism - including references to food - or even more poetic description for sex-related innuendo.  And so we have:

Henry asking Adder about Maleshov with Janosh asked to translate scene

Adder: There’s a cozy tavern there and beautiful bathhouse girls too. One of them, she had such nice round apples, I couldn’t leave the bed.

Adder and Janosh’s background dialogue (leading to misunderstanding)

Adder: I could go for something sweet right now. || Ja bym rad schrupał coś słodkiego.

Little reminder: in the further part of this dialogue, once Janosh expressed that Adder sounds poetic, Adder directly said he is just horny and nothing else.

And the one example used outside interaction with Janosh, as part of Adder’s introduction scene

Adder: Still… your wife… won't forget this Polish sausage… till the day she dies! || Twoja baba... i tak do końca życia będzie pamiętać, o mojej polskiej kiełbasie!

Thus we have Janosh and Adder using similar food-related euphemism. This raises a question, did the food euphemism become a sort of compromise between their extreme different interests? Did Adder drop his usual direct, crude speech pattern to make Janosh more comfortable around “dirty talk” like using descriptions Janosh relates the most or giving him a tool to partake in “manly” stuff without the need of vulgar language? Or interacting on a daily basis with food-centered Janosh rubbed him in such a way? Like, how much of the change in speech pattern is conscious and intentional and how much of it is the result of their long-standing friendship?

One way or another, there is a noticeable shift in how Adder speaks about sex to Henry and Janosh. And it is seen not only with food-related euphemism but also in more toned descriptions. For example in background dialogues & interactions, Adder says to Henry “I'd love to fuck” but to Janosh is saying “I’d go and visit some girls“. Or, to Henry “I could fuck until I drop!” but to Janosh “I’d be so happy if there was some girl around.” 

Granted, the more examples the better is our understanding of characters’ speech patterns and intended relationships. However even with limited source material as it is, Janosh’s interaction with Adder stands out from others. Of course, there is a possibility that Adder’s vulgarity around Henry and other men is a performed masculinity to uphold the image of “tough mercenary”, however, Adder’s Polish voice lines representing crude speech patterns and source material confirming his high sexual libido make me put in doubt this thought. Adder is naturally a rough, sex-driven person thus I think him toning down his crude speech pattern is not a coincidence, just like the fact that Janosh avoids talking about sexual matters directly and/or in great details.

Keeping in mind that everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of fictional characters, I do see Janosh somewhere on the asexuality spectrum. From time to time he may show some interest in women (seen with Katherine and arguably Rosa) and potentially homosexual and/or perceived as sodomite sexual activity, but source material didn’t give much suggesting he acted on such impulses on a daily basis. So far, Janosh Uher, as compared to Adder, Kubyenka and Dry Devil is the least sex-driven character out of the four original members of Devil’s Pack. At the same, Janosh’s most memorable quote involving direct talk about sexual activity

Adder: Te skurwysyny lubią to robić od tyłu! || Those whoresons like to do it from behind! Janosh: Od tyłu to boli i naprawdę robi się gównianie || And it hurts from behind and things get really shitty. 

due to its ambiguous nature, speaking in Polish only for Adder’s ears can be interpreted even as an example of Janosh’s homosexual experience(s).  

One way or another, Janosh seems to have a complex relationship with generally speaking sex. More than paying attention to women, he thinks about and enjoy food, while his lasting and emotionally deep relationships are with Adder and Kubyenka who enjoy the mercenary life of boozing and fucking but at the same time provided a safe environment for Janosh without pressure to fit that lifestyle.

Also on the subject of AI and navigating it, I found that something that works with older folk or people that don't understand why its casual use is bad is comparing what we have now with what we should have in terms of LLMs.

If I want to, say, translate Polish with AI, I should have a tool that accesses lawfully licensed, specific data sets. My Polish AI translator should only look at the textbooks and dictionaries and tell me what I need to know. What we have now with things like chatGPT is more akin to asking a rando how to translate something to Polish and then the rando travels the world and steals all the books on all the subjects from all the libraries then reads them all and takes notes then narrows it down and eventually finds the Polish words to read back to me, and in the meantime I've had to give them food and water and gas for their efforts, and soon I'll have to give them my computer and appliances for them to keep thinking about everything there ever was and talking to everyone ever and hallucinating to high hell. And all I needed was a sentence translated.

It's not the user's fault that we asked for a butter knife and they gave us a nuke, but we should know not to deploy it if we can avoid it.

(Oh and we're definitely paying for that nuke too, just not as a direct debit)
