do they? melissa could’ve lied, and said ‘sure,’ as if she had all the answers, when in reality, she was as clueless as him. a certified workaholic, it had been a while since she’d gone out with someone, much too long to remember if flowers were a first date staple. letting out a soft laugh, she shook her head, “it’s been a while since i’ve been on a date, so uh, i don’t really know.” taking the flowers from his hand, she smiled, nonetheless, “no, i really like them, thank you.”

clearing her throat, melissa set the flowers off to the side on a table, mentally reminding herself to put them in a vase when she got back, grabbing her purse as well in one swift motion. checking the inside: money, phone, keys, pepper spray, just the usual stuff. giving hayden another a smile, trying to shake off whatever nerves she had. “great, yeah, i’m all ready.” stepping outside, she shut the door behind her, turning to lock to it before throwing her keys back into her bag.

It had also been a while since she had been out on a date? That made him feel a lot better, “Well, if it’s not too much of a surprise, it’s my first time in a while too.” He told her as they walked to his car, hoping it would make them both less nervous. “Here’s to new beginnings, right?” Opening the side of the door for her, he beckoned her to get it. His father had taught him manners and remembers a certain time when he talked back and he might have gotten his ass beat… After that, he made sure to be the most mannered guy in the room.

Jogging to the other side, he began their journey to Ollie’s, “Are you a fan of Ollie’s?” He asked, giving Melissa a smile as they made their way to the restaurant. He remembered his first time… with her. If it were up to Hayden, they would eat the same meal over and over, but his ex, had a jar full of random restaurants in it and every Friday and Saturday they would choose a random place and neither could say no. She was the adventurous one out of the two of them. “I used to go… with someone. Their pasta is fantastic.” He got quiet, trying avoid talking about her was going to be hard, so it was better if he kept quiet.

As she opened the door, he smiled, admiring her. She was really pretty, he could appreciate that. He was glad she had agreed to go on a date with him. His first time trying to get out there and a rejection would have definitely hit his ego hard. Giving her a chuckle, “Do people still do that? Give flowers on dates?” Making a joke seemed to relax him, and hopefully her. “I hope you like it, and if you don’t, no worries!” Laughing, at himself, he just tried to calm himself, but his heart was beating a mile a minute.

Fiddling with his tie, Hayden wondered what he was doing… Going on a date, his first since his ex had left. God he looked like an idiot. Pushing up the visor in this car, he pulled the tie off and tossed it in the dashboard. Maybe he should have gotten a haircut, or something to making him look ‘nicer.’ Since the divorce, he just didn’t care and let his hair grow out. Chris fucked with him because of it. It was too late though, he was sitting outside of Melissa’s place, having a crisis in his car.

Screw it, he grabbed the flowers he had bought for her and walked up to his door, knocking, waiting for her to open. He thought she was cute and maybe it was time to start dating again… even if it was painful for him to think about moving on. He needed to though, just to try and move on. So he was taking her to Ollie’s and he hoped he was doing the right thing… Was the flowers too much? Did guys give girls flowers on the first date? Jesus, he felt like a fucking old man.

she had to admit, she was a little surprised by hayden’s text. it had been a while since melissa had dated, or really gone on a date. she pushed herself into work for the longest time, and now it felt like she’d missed her chance. but, then she got his text, and she couldn’t help but wonder why she was holding back. she was pretty, still semi-young, no reason not to be going out on dates, right? melissa had rushed home, realizing she couldn’t possibly go out on a date in her work clothes, splotches of flour covering her shirt.

simple, right? first dates were supposed to be simple. dinner, talking, things like that. so she settled on a dress, making her look at least somewhat presentable. her head turned towards the door at the sudden noise, letting out a sigh. she could do this, she could be normal. giving hayden a smile as she opened up, her eyes darted down to the flowers in his hand, “wow, um, thank you, for the flowers! that’s really nice of you.”

Why was it that everywhere Avery turned, someone was either in a bad mood or wasn’t a smiling face? She wasn’t complaining – much but it did get to a point where she was tired of thinking she was doing something wrong. So when one of the customers knocked into her and dropped her drink, she did want to call the manager. Maybe there was a story behind this? She wasn’t going to pry, but she was going to start questioning the manager here. Honey’s seemed like a popular place to be, so she figured someone would know something about everything, right? When she heard a female’s voice, Avery looked up from her phone and greeted the brunette with a friendly smile. “Hi, hello yes..” her accent was very obvious, but she hoped that wouldn’t be a problem in communicating. “I purchased a French Vanilla latte, someone knocked it over and did not apologize. I’m kind of short on money here and I was wondering if you can make an exception for the five cents I owe? Your barista didn’t seem too inclined so I asked to speak with you.” she explained and hope it wouldn’t be an issue.

things were hectic around the bakery, to say the least. with whatever had happened on st. patricks day, people were feeling the affects of it, and seeking comfort and relief in the form of pastries and coffee. not that melissa could complain, business was business and she’d never say no to a customer, but at times, it could be a bit much, and her employees dealt with the brunt of it. nodding her head as the woman spoke, she offered an apologetic smile, “i’m so sorry about that. it’s been a little busier here than usual, and i really do apologize for that. i’d be happy to give you a new coffee on the house, it’s not a problem at all.”

it still felt weird. people calling me ma’am. she wasn’t that old, was she? 33 is still young? pushing her usual off-topic thoughts off to the side, she looked up at the man in front of her, nodding as he spoke, “of course, yeah, we are totally able to do that.” melissa brought her hand to his, giving it a light shake, “did you have anything in mind for her? maybe a certain flavor or design?”

     The rain drummed its fingers on the low tin roof, the sound echoing across the empty space of the boxing gym; harsh and sharp against his ears. The boxing gym was a place Rourke often found himself other than The Pint when he needed to unwind, or occupy himself with something other than the gurgling sound of somebody choking on their own blood from his last kill. Rourke had found himself here more often than not since his father’s death, his grief and the weight of the loss driving him to seeking release from his skin splitting on his knuckles as they struck the punching bag instead of finding solace in somebody else’s bed.

(  It wasn’t the healthiest of coping mechanisms, but it beat the alternative. )

people wouldn’t have thought melissa was the type to box. punching things in a rage seemed so different than her usual airy, cheerful personality. she may have been the baker with a smile on her face to most people, but everyone had another side to them. and melissa’s side? pent-up frustrations, a tendency to overthink, and the constant feeling of helplessness in her. she’d taken boxing when she was younger, as sort of a self-defense mechanism, but continued on with it, because it helped her let go of the thoughts that often plagued her mind.

making her way into the boxing gym, a duffle bag slung over her shoulder and an open jacket exposing her sports bra, melissa hadn’t realized that it was just the two of them. she couldn’t help but watch, not meaning to intrude on his time. he seemed... consumed with grief. and she couldn’t help but feel fascinated by his movements.

her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his voice, causing melissa to step back, “oh, um, no, sorry. i just – i didn’t mean to intrude, i just came to work out. sorry.”
