Butters was more than content to pretend everything was the way it used to be. That’s what he had been wanting for a while anyways. Although talking like this, after all that had happened, is sort of bittersweet. “ Skating, yeah? How’s that going for you? I’ve just been busy with school really. Applying to colleges as well. ”

     " it's going well, i really do enjoy it. " despite what had happened, she truly did miss this. just spending time, sitting and talking about what ever was going on each other's lives. for a moment, charlotte really could blatantly ignore the elephant in the room and pretend it was the way it used to be.

          " oh ! that is really great ! are you hoping to go into anything in particular ? "

His lips pursed and quivered. He could hear the change in her voice and it surprised him. He always just assumed she threw him away like he was nothing. He hadn’t expected her to miss him… “ It’s good to know I’m not the only one. Uh. What have you been up to? ” He attempted to sway the conversation back to something more normal, less heart wrenching.

     " o-oh ! i haven't been up to much of anything really. " she put on another smile, hoping to sound a bit chipper. yes, more normal conversation was a good thing. normal conversation meant that anything negative will be kept at bay.

          " i've been skating a lot more lately. and you, butters ? what have you been up to ? "

Hearing her laugh made his heart swell in an uncomfortable way. A small smile pressed against his cheeks. God she was cute. Why did she have to be so cute?  “ That’s good to hear. It’s… it’s nice to see you too…. I missed you. ”

     " butters, " she mumbled quietly, a touch of sadness in her voice. those words shouldn't have tugged at the heartstrings the way they did.h er gaze dropped, fingers fiddling absently with the hem of her sweater.

He didn’t know how to react. He was still heartbroken and the reason for that was staring at him through the screen asking how he was doing. Yet, embarrassingly enough he still that warm joy fill him up inside when he heard her voice.  “ I’ve been okay, I guess. How about you? ”

     she laughed softly, if not a bit nervously. charlotte was honestly happy to see him, to hear that he was okay. though, there was no ignoring those feelings of uncertainty that lingered in her mind. she hurt him, she knew she had. nothing will change that.

          "i've been alright. it's.. really nice to see you."

     " butters,“ the girl shifted awkwardly in her seat, a look of confusion on her face. perhaps she shouldn’t have been as surprised as she was when the boy answered the call, he was clearly online. still, butters still had the choice to DECLINE if he had really wanted to.

          ” i— i didn’t think you’d really answer.“

Butters seemed almost in shock when he picked up, trying to regain his composure. He was surprised enough that she had started calling and assumed it was a butt dial, but hit answer anyways just in case.  “ Well you called me, of course I’d pick up- I mean. Uh. Can I ask why? ”

     it was an odd situation, and charlotte could admit to that. after all, she was the one who had told him to stop calling her. she had been the one to cut ties with him. she didn't blame him if her call had caught him off guard, honestly she hadn't expected it herself.
