What had given it away? Was it to do with how he was seen to be leaning against the fence that hemmed in some cattle, mere minutes from dawn? Perhaps, but in any case a good night’s rest had eluded him and so, rather than waste time, he’d gotten dressed and left the house, if to see what manner of creature was active at this premature hour.  As it happened, old friends were awake too, with the sound of Charles’ voice drawing a warm smile on his blemished face. The thrilling of his own husky call came a short time later, stating the first excuse that came to mind. “Can’t ever seem to get comfortable sleepin’ in a cushioned bed. Doesn’t feel right, somehow.” Part of him missed the rough conditions faced back then they rode together in Dutch’s gang. Such a lifestyle was far from befitting of the family man he was trying to be, but much like all other habits, it was someone Marston had difficulty giving up.

“I think about ‘em more often than I should, Charles. The gang. Back when most of them were still alive and had stuck around.”

Bent double, he had stopped to catch his breath after running from what felt like one end of Valentine to the other side. When at last he finds he can breathe again without any difficulty, Marston exhales a sigh of relief, removing his hat for a few moments so that he could tuck a few strands of his oily hair behind an ear. “Sure didn’t felt simple. The hell happened back there?!” Looking to Arthur as he lets go of the brim of his hat, John’s visage is marred by a fury that was justifiable-- for in the ruckus of what was supposed to be a casual visit to a local saloon, they’d been recognised by patrons and soon found themselves at the business end of half a dozen drawn weapons.   “It looked like they wanted you dead, Morgan.”
