( dominic fike | cis man | he/him ) — was that TARQUIN MCTAVISH passing through diagon alley? yes, i think so… people around them say they remind them of the sting of a brand new tattoo, bruised knuckles, a bear hug that knocks the air out of you, the smell of irish coffee and burned cookies, the kind of laughter that makes your sides hurt, the annoying neighbour that blasts music at sunrise, which i suppose seems to fit that SLYTHERIN alumni. they’re actually pretty ALOOF, IMPULSIVE, and CHEEKY for a TWENTY-FOUR year old, but i wonder if it serves them well when working as a BARTENDER at THE THREE BROOMSTICKS. have you heard that rumor has it that HALF-BLOOD has stayed NEUTRAL? i wouldn’t have guessed… but this is a conversation we should be having somewhere else. liza manalo was born into an ancient, noble, pureblooded family, known for owning various speakeasies, shops, hotels and restaurants not only in the philippines, but all around the world ; however, they were mostly known for their shady business. she had the same fate as most pureblooded girls of her status -- have a marriage that would benefit both families involved, birth heirs ; though being the sixth daughter out of seven, her father thought he could expand his family’s influence and make new connections. liza would move all the way to england, marry into a family of similar status and beliefs on blood purity as the manalos. her husband was a death eater and her children would grow up to join him as well. she didn’t like england, she despised her husband and she certainly didn’t enjoy her life. it was all so painfully boring.
marvin mctavish was a muggle, born and raised in london. he owned a small gym and worked as a boxing instructor there. money was tight, but marvin always pulled through. no one would expect to meet liza at one of the shittiest muggle pubs in london ; but marvin did. she was beautiful and marvin made a joke about how she shouldn’t wear such expensive jewelry in a place like this - they hit it off immediately. liza hadn’t felt so alive in ages. this should’ve been their last meeting. it should’ve been a one time thing ; what was she thinking, sneaking into muggle london? was she a teenager or a grown woman, a wife, a mother? she couldn’t stop thinking about marvin, though. liza had never met someone like him, she’d never felt what marvin made her feel before ; so she kept visiting him, arranging meet ups and dates in secret. she was quite secretive, marvin didn’t know much about her ; she kept coming at weird, random times, sometimes he wouldn’t hear from her for days. but the mystery only made him even more infatuated.
those five months they spent together were the happiest in liza’s life ; but when she discovered she was pregnant, liza knew everything was about to come to an end. she confessed everything ; not only that she was married and a mother, but being a witch as well. her family’s beliefs. her husband’s beliefs. marvin believed her. he didn’t get angry, as liza anticipated ; no, he took it all in ( it took him a while, but he did ) and offered solutions. he had some money saved, he’d take two more jobs, he’d take care of her and their baby. he’d protect her, from her husband, from her family. he’d figure it out. they would figure it out - as a family. merlin, why was he so.. good? why did it make her feel so guilty?
liza moved in marvin’s flat, leaving her old family behind, saying her farewells with a vague note. she brewed herself polyjuice potion everytime she had to go out ; her husband was on the look for her, after all. it was exciting at first ; having to hide, being in a new place, having to get adjusted to this new lifestyle and those new people. soon enough, though.. things got a bit repetitive. suddenly, having noodles for the fourth day in a row wasn’t fun. marvin was barely home as he spent the whole day working ; and whenever he was, he was just so.. exhausted. he wasn’t the marvin she met from the pub, the exciting man who’d tell jokes and show her around muggle london and introduce her to strange but amusing people. no more expensive robes and new jewelry. no more splurging - the had to count every penny. and the flat.. merlin, the tiny, miserable flat stopped being charming two months in. now, liza felt suffocated in it. she wasn’t born to live like this.
their son was born on december 18th, during the cold, snowy night. liza picked the name tarquin, after king lucius tarquinius priscus, her favourite historical figure. it was the day marvin proposed to her, too. little did he know, though, that three weeks later he’d go home after work, only to find every trace of liza gone. all but a note. thank you for everything. i’m sorry. please don’t look for me.

tarquin was pretty much raised in his dad’s gym - a collaborative effort by all the people working there, aka uncle carl, gramps jack, uncle sammy and aunt adira. jack would often joke that little tarquin learned to fight way before he learned how to walk properly. despite financial issues, tarquin was a happy, sociable kid who was often out looking for trouble, unfortunately for marvin, who still picking up the pieces after the heartbreak. it got even harder when tarq noticed most of his peers and classmates had two parents each ; he’d begin to question his father, why didn’t he have a mum or at least two dads like some of his friends? it took a few tries for the kid to realize that the subject pained marvin and he would continue to avoid it, no matter how consistent tarquin was with his questions.
when tarquin was four years old, his younger half-sister was born. her mum, cherry, was marvin’s on-and-off girlfriend. the relationship was... best described as messy. cherry was someone who didn’t take anything seriously and for marvin, it was simply a rebound. a way to attempt to forget all about liza. there was a baby on the way now, though, and marvin took it seriously. the two moved in together at his flat, though the relationship ended up being more as two acquaintances co-parenting.
tarquin started showing signs of magic when he was around seven years old and marvin was terrified, to say the least. even more so when his daughter did as well, even earlier. he couldn’t avoid the topic furthermore ; he sat tarquin down and explained his heritage to him, his powers, his mother and the whole story. he tried reaching out to liza, but she never responded - if the letter ever reached her at all.
tarquin’s first year at hogwarts was quite eventful and opened his eyes to the truth that the wizarding world wasn’t all magic and fun like in the stories. he realized the signifance on blood purity ; what his dad had told him about liza manalo and her family suddenly made more sense. not only that ; tarquin ended up meeting his older half-siblings. he attempted to greet his older brother with a punch ( quite the entertaining scene, an 11 year old attempting to beat the shit out of a sixth year ) before their sister put an end to it. liza had returned to her ‘old family’, but even 11 year old tarquin had enough sense not to tell his father that. he’d hurt enough.
tarquin fit well enough into his house, but the thing that set him off was the hint of endorsing blood purity. back home he was used to fixing problems with his fists ; and that’s exactly what he tried at school, so it was no surprise that tarquin would spend the majority of his time in detention. thank merlin his dad was a muggle ; tarquin couldn’t imagine the amount of howlers he’d gotten.
tarq didn’t really take school too seriously - he was more focused on enjoying himself because back home he had to deal with the responsibility of working, helping around the house, taking care of his younger siblings whenever his dad was at work. marvin and cherry were no more - they agreed it was okay for her to move out, though she left for the states to pursue her career of acting. she wrote.. sometimes. her daughter didn’t take it well, but tarq was there for her, in his own way. marvin ended up getting married a few years later, to one of his childhood friends. the two had three kids - and while love was sweet, the financial status of the mctavish family wasn’t. so, school for tarquin meant time to enjoy himself, throw parties, do dumb shit with his friends, etc. etc.
it was only during his seventh year that tarquin realized he had to take himself a little more seriously, because he had to think of his future career. he’d always known what he wanted to do. be right in the middle of the action, train to be an auror. his newts were barely satisfactory, but they were enough. marvin was so proud - he’d always thought tarq was a smart kid, but too reckless for his own good, too irresponsible, unlike his sister. if you put your mind to it, anything is possible. just put in the effort, son. just try.

tarquin ended up taking a break before starting his auror training after graduation. sheila, his step-mother had always had complications with her health, but things got worse a bit after the birth of her younger child. marvin said it would be okay, though - he encouraged tarquin to focus on saving money for himself and completing his auror training - marvin and his eldest daughter could handle it, he said. he had so much hopes for tarquin, always claiming that his son was finally getting his shit together. it felt good, to watch his dad brag to his friends at the gym, to have him be so proud and hopeful.. but merlin, there was so much pressure. tarquin missed the times when no one expected anything from him.
he could feel a clock ticking, indicating his time until his next fuck up. which, did come, sooner than expected. three years ago, he’d finally began his auror training.. but most importantly, he was finally in a serious relationship. it was a big step for someone like tarquin who simply didn’t do relationships - but things just happened. he was home at muggle london one week in the summer, bringing his partner at the time with him, hoping to introduce them to his family and friends. things were getting pretty serious. marvin was the most excited out of them all ; his son had finally decided to settle down, plus, he adored his partner. they fit just right in. after a family dinner, they went out so tarquin could introduce them to his muggle friends. everything was going well until.. it wasn’t. see, neighborhood feuds weren’t unusual, especially in this part of london, but that night things got out of control, tarquin’s partner got hurt and they couldn’t use magic, otherwise they’d reveal themselves. they were hurt ; they assured tarquin it was alright, everybody tried to move on, have a party afterwards, laugh it off as they usually did. but tarquin couldn’t let it go. not this time. not when his person was hurt.
you’re an adult now, you can’t be throwing fists left and right. it’s time to grow up and solve your problems the mature way, marvin would say and tarquin took that advice.. a little. he didn’t think fighting the muggle way would make him feel better, no - kudos to marvin. tarquin snuck into the guy’s house late at night, used the first spell that came to his mind and seemed perfect at that moment. perhaps he wasn’t thinking straight, or maybe he thought it was the proper justice without being too cruel. the man trapped in a teakettle - a scary experience for him, but something tarquin can laugh off later with his mates. he planned on keeping him there for a few weeks or so - however long he pleased and saw fit, really, then letting him go.
tarquin took the kettle with him to his hogsmeade flat ; he didn’t tell his partner, but he told two of his friends that came to visit. one of them found it funny - the other, not so much. they couldn’t convince tarquin to let the man go ; they wanted to do what was right and went to one of the aurors who were training tarquin and let them know. they truly didn’t mean for everything that followed after to happen ; all they wanted was for tarquin to have some sort of punishment, nothing too serious - just a pat on the back, and for the muggle to be free. it was reported to the ministry, there was a trial, tarquin plead guilty. voting followed ; one less vote and tarquin would’ve gotten away with it. someone’s last, definitive vote sent him to azkaban. he’d witnessed ex housemates get away with much worse things, but that was the way their world worked. tarquin sucked it up ; he’d grit his teeth and handle his punishment. he didn’t regret what he did - he never would and he let everyone know.
he spent three years in azkaban. having been released recently, tarquin still hasn’t visited his family. he’s not sure he can face marvin and sheila just yet, and especially not his sister, who’s so angry at him for fucking everything up, for leaving her all on her own to take care of the family. it feels weird, having to readjust after that soul-sucking experience.
