i think she just needs love and acceptance and she will look for it in everyone. even if they don’t deliver, in her mind, at least she has someone. it’s sad tbh
nki and amelia were able to see the toxic patterns bc they have experience with mental illnesses which makes them able to recognize the patterns. while shub can’t see the red flags because she’s naive and had very few relationships in the past.
I became active on here just to defend Wilbur Soot’s angel of a mother so I feel it’s my duty to have a short rant about his dad. I’m going to do it in bullet point fashion because I’m not in the mood for writing full paragraphs. This is by no means an extensive list of stuff about experiences with him, just what’s on my mind now and what I think people would like to see.
• Shaving?
You can trace a lot back to Wilbur’s terrible daddy issues and one of the biggest examples of that is his weird little relationship with Phil. Namely his fascination with shaving and it’s stereotypical place as THE father-son activity. It’s always “Phil can teach us how to shave” and “Fundy look I’ll show you how to shave” all while most things point to his father never doing the same for him. He may have outright said this in the past but if he hasn’t, the horrific way he shaves is plenty for me (you are giving yourself razor burn, Wilbur). The weird sbi dynamic can probably be partly tied to his daddy issues overall.
• One Sided Experiences
Wilbur Soot is a licensed glider/light aircraft pilot! That’s pretty neat. He accomplished this pretty young, before most people can drive, and as far as I’ve seen it was completely through is father. Financing and supporting that kind of thing seems…very big to me. His father had experience with it before so it was a bit of family continuation, but it feels like such a big grand “cool thing”. I think it’s a good example of his dad’s “big things, unique things > life skills” attitude. That sure doesn’t sound familiar/s
• That’s Mean
Wilbur has said in the past that his self esteem was extremely low during secondary school because of his niche as the “smelly, weird kid”. He’s also said that this was due to the fact that when he’d visit his father after the divorce, he’d sleep on a mattress with the dog instead of having a proper bed, or at the very least would have poor sleeping arrangements. He’d also wear his uniform for the next day to sleep and end up smelling like dog. If anyone wants clips for these things I can go dig for them, but we at least know that Wilbur’s time at his father’s house was probably less pleasant and more degrading than with his mum.
• I Looked Up To You!
All of this being said, Wilbur looked up to his father as a child. In an old stream he tells a story from when he was younger, one about an occasion in which he thought he saw a ghost. He brought his father to investigate with him, mentioning that he thought his father was the smartest person he knew. It genuinely scared him when he heard his dad say that he didn’t have an explanation for what Will had seen. We know that there was admiration, and I don’t doubt that admiration turned into bitterness over things like the last bullet.
