we need to bring back anon kink memes in a big way. no one is horny enough anymore. the other night i found a fic on an old kink meme from 2009 that was so well-written and also so raunchy and foul (affectionate) it could have stripped paint off my car. there is something about truly unapologetic filth that can be transcendent and tender and marrow deep and maybe if we all leaned into being anonymous depraved little weirdos again we'd learn how to have more fun.

I submitted a prompt in a previous year and AO3 won't let me delete it. Is it possible to have it deleted by admin?

I believe you ought to be able to delete it yourself as long as you're logged in to the right account - we used to have a terrible time convincing people not to delete prompts back when our tagging spreadsheet was very strictly divided by ten prompts to a page.

If you go look at that year's prompts, can you still see the "My prompts" and "My claims" on the left sidebar? If you can't delete the prompt in question, can you still edit it?

The prompts are all anonymous, so there's no way for me to guarantee that you're actually the author of the prompt, unless you do something like edit the prompt to say "please delete me!"

I have a hard time telling what's possible for random users to do vs. what's only possible for me as an administrator, so it's possible nobody but me can delete or edit their own prompts at the moment.

If you poke around a bit more and capture what kind of error messages you get, that would be helpful!

Not anon, but I can confirm regular users do not have an edit or delete button for the old prompt memes once they're closed.

Also, don't ignore that Prompt Link button, it's an excellent extension if you like AO3 kink memes! I made one back in February 2024 and somebody else made another one in May 2024 with what is probably a more elegant code approach. (I am far from a sophisticated programmer.)

i keep seeing complaints that even though Sinners is a widely beloved movie on Tumblr and fandom as a whole, that there is comparatively few fic on AO3 about it

okay!

people, including black people, were harassed over ships such as Sammie/Remmick or Moorecest and called klansmen or racists who think black people are as prone as white hillbillies to being "incestuous degenerates"

focusing on Mary (and, to a lesser extent, Grace) in any form was racist because "Annie and Pearline are right there, why do you hate dark-skinned black women HMMMM?"

fic characterization of the Moores, Sammie, Annie, Pearline, or any other black supporting or minor characters and the usage of perfectly popular fandom/ship/smut tropes could get under scrutiny, and really, when has anyone ever wanted to write something that might be torn apart by a crowd of overzealous critics?

it's the Finnpoe situation all over again. in this fandom climate, it's hardly a surprise that the only people who end up staying are the Kylux shippers or Remmick readerfic writers

I haven't seen it, so I don't know what other filmmaking factors might be in play, but it's pretty normal for one-off movies to have very little fic fandom. It's true that the exceptions do tend to follow certain patterns, but I think that's pretty different from the implied situation that many white dude characters get fandom thing X while everybody else gets crickets. Actually, almost everybody gets crickets.

On AO3's movies index page right now, there are 13,113 tags showing (including all the various metatags and versions of the same fandom). Here's a chart of how many of those tags have how many works:

945 works for Sinners is honestly pretty good.

Out of the 282 fandom tags with a thousand works or more, if I take out all the billion MCU/DCEU/Star Wars/etc. franchise tags and the stuff like South Park that does technically have a movie, I'm left with a list that is still mostly franchises, like James Bond or Disney princesses.

It's honestly hard to have anything left if I exclude franchises. Here's a sampling of the bigger movie fandom tags with the MCU, a bunch of Disney, etc. taken out. It's a bit arbitrary, but this gets the list down to a scrollable size.

Notice how many of these are still franchises. Notice how little fic there is for mega-popular films like The Matrix. (Granted, some of that is because it hasn't made it onto AO3, but I still don't remember those films having a huge fic fandom.)

Some of these are popular in other languages and look to me like they're the latest adaptation of something with a preexisting fandom.

Some of them are Netflix movies. Sure, you can say "Wharrgarbl! Kpop demon hunters is popular because Asian!" all you want, but it's something we didn't have to drag our asses to the theater to see, and it's luring people with the promise of a sequel they will also be able to watch in their pajamas.

It's a well-known trait of fic fandoms that serialized media with just enough down time between canon entries and plenty of either plot holes or unexplored areas of canon tend to grow the big fic fandoms. Most canons still don't, but the ones that are going to often follow this pattern.

Looking at the list above, let's hunt for some one-off movies that showed in the theater, darker canons, or ones that deal with serious social issues. As an off-the-cuff short list, I'd pick:

Having not seen Sinners, I can't say exactly how dark or quippy or whatever it is, but this short list seems like some of the more relevant AO3 movie fandoms based on lots of factors.

Much of this list is still way fluffier than Sinners sounds, and some of it is old enough that I don't know if there were lots of fics somewhere else. I'll note that Titanic only has a couple thousand on FFN though.

Titanic—Titanic!—has a small fic fandom.

So we've got the freak outlier Inception, but we also have stylish, fun vampire films like The Lost Boys that really aren't generating that much fic fandom. We have recent films that I know people liked, like D&D: HAT that are also not generating much more fic than Sinners.

I'm sure people were assholes and that this had a chilling effect, but even without that, this is just what a movie fandom looks like. The only reason we think differently is that instead of asking any sane question, we keep on and keep on asking:

Why wasn't this movie a one-in-a-million outlier like Inception?

Hi Mod(s)! I've submitted a dozen prompts for mdzs kink meme 2024 so far but there's two prompts that didnt let me submit them. I was told these prompts would render my overall sign up invalid and i didnt know why. One was a chengxian prompt, one was a prompt applicable to any wei wuxian pairing. i used existing tags only, filled all required areas and didnt exceed the word count but it still happened. help?

Hmm. I've had similar things happen to me occasionally and it definitely can get a bit mysterious! It's usually something with the tags, often the "additional tags," but I can't remember more than that at the moment. I've never seen it have anything to do with the content of the prompt itself.

Hi! I've been sending in prompts on AO3 for the 2024 kink meme and I realized that for a while no further fics have been added. Is that normal? I read that you have to read through prompt fills and approve them, so I figured you'd be the best to ask. Have there been no fills the last month? Or have they been posted outside of the kink meme maybe? Is there maybe a special month where writers fill them and I missed that? I've seen enough claims to have gotten quite confused.

There have been fills for older prompts, but no fills for the 2024 meme!

Here's my email inbox of fill notifications, so you get a sense of how often they're coming in in 2024:

Only a handful each month. And this is spread out across all of the different prompt collections, so it's really VERY slow.

My guess is that most fills coming in at the moment are prompts people picked up years ago and are only getting around to writing now.

It's entirely possible that most of the authors who were active in the fandom when the kink meme was a common topic of conversation on mdzstwt/mdzsblr have moved on, and new authors joining the fandom in the last year or two are less aware of the kink meme as a potential source of inspiration.

I'd love to whip up a prompt-fill event, or at the very least a prompt highlight event, but I am unfortunately up to my eyeballs in other projects (well, more like multiple part-time jobs AND multiple volunteer positions) and don't have the mental bandwidth to do much more than make sure any fills that come in are read over and approved (ಥ _ ಥ)

If you have any interest in running a kinkmeme-related event, or have anything you'd like me to retweet/reblog/reskeet etc, I'd be happy to help out!

How many prompts can a person claim at a time?

By kink meme rules, there's no limit! There isn't any way for me to affect that on the moderator end as far as I'm aware. If a limit exists, it will be part of AO3's basic programming. If you find a limit, please let me know and I can add it to the FAQ.

There is an AO3-set limit to how many prompts you can submit; it's 50 per collection. So be judicious!

Do we need to finish the fic before fulfilling the prompt on ao3?

Nope! As long as the content of the first chapter doesn't make it impossible to fill the prompt, it's fine to just post Chapter 1 of your fill.

However, don't just post a 'placeholder' that says something like 'I am going to write this fic soon!' That isn't necessary or appropriate.

Hi! If I am writing a multi-chapter fill but I don't want to post it all at once, should I wait to officially add it as a fill until I've finished posting it? I think the first chapter technically meets the bare minimum requirements, but the bonus stuff plus extra for the prompt is all later.

It is fine to start posting a multi-chapter fill before it fulfills the prompt! I will give it a look to make sure you seem to be aiming in the right direction (so no filling "wangxian slow burn with eventual wedding" with a work that starts with one half of the ship perma-dying) but I definitely don't expect you to bang it all out ahead of time.

Lots and lots of fills so far have started with just one teasing chapter and many do not continue. That's not a problem—it's the nature of kink memes to have a lot of aspirational starter fills.

Hey, I’m a little confused about how this works, do I send you my prompt here, or do I submit it on ao3 somehow? Is there a limit to how specific my prompt can be? A thousand apologies for letting this molder in the depths of my ask box for nearly a whole year! I hope you found the answers to your questions. There is a FAQ on AO3 linked on this tumblr, but I suppose it's a bit hard to get to on mobile!

Prompts should be submitted via AO3 here. Just look over to the left and there's a link under "prompts" called "prompt form." There's a bunch of instructions on the form and some suggestions for how to write a good prompt, as well as a suggested template.

As for how specific you can be: as specific as you like! However, the more nitpicky you are, the less likley someone is to fill your prompt. You're trying to be specific enough to capture a writer's imagination and specific enough to warn the author off things you really hate, but if you start dictating every single plot beat or giving micromanage-y editorial advice, no potential authors will be interested in trying to please you.

Last year I deleted a prompt from a previous year(it was either 2021 or last year). I’ve had regrets about deleting it since and was wondering if I could resubmit it for this year, or perhaps a future round if not this year? I’ll try to avoid changing my mind about submissions from now on.

what if my work is in anonymous collection, are you able to de anon it?

If you are set to Anonymous in a different collection, your username will continue to show as "Anonymous" to your readers even if I uncheck the Anonymous box in the MDZS kink meme back-end. This happens frequently when authors participate in gift exchanges and fill a kink meme prompt with the same work. I set their username to public (at their request), but it remains private until the gift exchange collection reveal. So we have tested this feature several times!

To be clear, even when you are set to Anonymous in another collection (like the general "Anonymous" collection) I can still see your username on the kink meme's back-end. I just can't reveal it to your readers through AO3.
