your ship goes canon
your favorite ao3 writer drops 100k of your ship + your favorite trope
really nice gift for Specifically Me when the character has an immediate and violent panic response to being held down / physically restrained. especially if their affect is usually cheerful or relaxed or reserved and this is their one "sicko mode (wildly uncharacteristic)" button.
Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)
#"establish bisexuality in 1 sentance by having the character say they banged your mom and dad
bisexual representation solved by @go4ino everyone go home.
Systems that Murderbot interact with (mention frequency count)
(Platform Decay spoilers, but not related to the plot)
I occasionally get the urge (?) to count frequencies of things in the Murderbot Diaries, enter them in a spreadsheet and stare at them.
Former rental SecUnits like Murderbot are designed to be able to interface with various systems, mainly SecSystems but also others. Since Murderbot had to survive as a rogue for so long before finding places and people that it could belong, it's particularly adept at hacking, convincing, and controlling them. While it was a company unit, the systems it had daily interactions were HubSystem, SecSystem, and MedSystem.
HubSystem appears to work like a central executive (rather like the one in the classic working memory model), monitoring and controlling SecUnits (and other constructs). It enforced obedience via governor modules. It also acted as a gateway to database when SecUnits had to look up some task-relevant information.
SecSystems are found any place that requires security, monitoring through cameras, assessing risk/threat when something happens. Murderbot often seems to find them friendly and helpful. SecSystems and SecUnits probably have a natural, strong affinity.
MedSystem used to be something Murderbot used only when it was assisting its clients when they were injured. It sometimes gave instructions when its client wasn't close to a medical facility. It was only after meeting ART that it started using it for itself.
"Other" includes Central (aka AdaCol1) in Network Effect, AdaCol2 in System Collapse.
I didn't include targetControlSystem in Network Effect, as it wasn't a standard System.
These were the main systems that Murderbot regularly interacted with initially. But when it had to go to a place inhabited by groups of humans, it had to interact with multiple systems. There was a sharp increase in such 'other' systems in the latest book.
Barish-Estranza's proprietary model like Three probably had never had the experience with interfacing with non-B-E systems. Also, they had a strange augmented human HubSystem which might work in a different way from standard corporate HubSystems. I'm actually quite curious as to why they opted to use augmented humans as their HubSystem.
I suspect B-E uses augmented humans as a HubSystem for the same reason people use SecUnits instead of bots for security work: human neural tissue in theory gives them more flexible decision-making capability as well as resistance to certain kinds of hacking shenanigans. A regular HubSystem controlling the SecUnits' governor modules kind of defeats the point of them being constructs because HubSys itself is a weak link that can be used to prevent the SecUnits from doing their jobs. The Corporation Rim doesn't seem to like using pure machine intelligences (bots and systems) that have similar flexibility to a construct: all the ones we've seen in the series are either from non-CR polities or more bot-rights-friendly CR ones (ART, Miki) or are adapted from pre-CR infrastructure (Adacol-1 and Adacol-2)
Of course, using a human HubSys introduces its own vulnerabilities such as humans having worse reaction time and multitasking capability, and it doesn't actually seem to be that hack-proof. I think MB mentions not being able to hack people's augments at some point, but the CombatSecUnit derived killware in Exit Strategy was able to incapacitate augmented humans with attacks against their augments or internal interfaces, and ART straight-up killed a couple of the contaminated colonists through their hardware. So there are definitely tradeoffs there, but there's also tradeoffs to giving your SecUnits projectile weapons instead of energy weapons as their built-in guns
We also only saw the human HubSystem with a group of SecUnits that were operating in "Enemy territory," making contact with a group of potentially unfriendly colonists with only a shuttle for support. It may be that they use human handlers for situations that could become very unpredictable, and for more normal security work they use conventional HubSystems.
Change the world by living in it, not by dying for it.
Mira Grant - Into the Drowning Deep
One of the things I love about the October Daye series is that, as much of a three-dimensional person with feelings and thoughts and Noble aims the main character is, she's still not human and you're not allowed to forget that
She grew up geographically in the United States, more or less, and culturally had a lot of exposure to life in California from the mid 20th to early 21st centuries. She's still a monarchist, because that's how fae society works. Her solution to a bad king isn't to establish a democracy – it's to go and find a good king to put on the throne. It never occurs to her to do it differently
She's more tech savvy than a lot of the older fae, but still not immune to seeing something it's been around for at least a decade as a potential passing fad
I love her strangeness and I love her and I love these books so much

When they're waiting to board the boat and the crowd is all listening in on Murderbot telling the humans its going back to help the militia hold off the corporates
The crowd all parting to let it through and Mb thinks it must be its angry face and not the fact that everyone just heard its going off to protect them
When passengers spot it in the water and work together to pull it aboard
Random humans recognizing its heroism and working to help it
They hear its kid? say "They will kill you" they hear its wife? ask if it's "going to do the thing." It has a past the kids don't know about. It's going to protect everyone or die trying. Its going to buy its family time to get away. You know every human on that boat was relieved when it made it back aboard.
#😭😭😭😭 #murderbot #god yeah they probably DO think that's its family!!!! #and it is. to be clear. farai is about to report back to tano like 'bad news :/ i'm on ayda's side about the secunit now.' #[communist bugs bunny meme] OUR secunit #but my point is that a bystander probably sees what they think is a heavily augmented human person #someone so augmented that it MUST have been some kind of lifesaving measure rather than a choice (per artificial condition) #who has their wife(?) and their mother(?) and their THREE children(?) with them #and THAT is the person who says with total authority that it's going to protect them or die trying #of course they step aside to let it through #that's some entertainment feed quality heroism right there! i do think there's something to be said about maia and csethiro complementing each other in exactly the same way that the nohecharei are designed to complement each other
"the maza, to guard with his spirit and the strength of his mind": maia, with his gentle demeanour and thoughtful nature, who consistently pokes holes in long-held beliefs and faulty logic, who solves a problem thought unsolvable by simply granting an audience to the people no one else had bothered to listen to, who dreamed of becoming a maza to win his father's love
"the soldier, to guard with his body and the strength of his arm": csethiro, with her soldier's boldness and unwavering duty, who signs with a "ferociously energetic" cavalier's signature, who shoves her way through a horde of panicking nobles to check on the fiancé she's barely spoken two words to, who learned the unfashionable art of duelling for no other reason than that she could
characters going “we were lovers once”: eh, it’s okay i guess. it’s nice enough
characters going “we were friends once”: absolutely devastating. one hit knockout i’m gone
getting violently ill btw
There’s an episode of Sesame Street (on Netflix! you can watch it easily!) where Elmo attends a toy-swap, where you offer up old toys you don’t play with anymore and receive someone else’s toys that are new to you. Cute!
But Elmo, after cheerfully surrendering his old toys, sees that the children who swapped toys with him are playing with his toys “wrong”! They’re imagining entirely different make believe scenarios! They’re pretending the football is a dinosaur egg instead of a rocket ship! Aaahhhhh!!!! And this is so distressing to poor Elmo that he does the unthinkable: He does swapsies-backsies and takes all his toys back!
This being Sesame Street, he learns that you can’t control how other people play pretend, but you can join in if you want to! And if you don’t want to, that’s ok, you can just play pretend your own way by yourself or with someone else who wants to play that way too. You can still be friends with people who play pretend differently than you (and aren’t being mean/harmful/etc, do not bad-faith-read this 🤨).
Anyway this is a post about fandom.
Thought crimes of course aren’t real but uh. We know those aren’t just thoughts anymore once you’ve posted them publicly, yeah?
Then they’re just crimes.
sure, fictional crimes since nothing happened and no one was hurt. should we put the fictional handcuffs on? "sorry, you wrote about murder which is illegal, go spend 20 years in mind jail"
y'all make so much more fuss about shit in fanfiction than crimes in real life
Agatha Christie is serving 100,000 consecutive life sentences for all the murders
