clenching my FIST it's so important to understand that even though chief knows the galaxy is a tough place, even though he's not truly a "dumb" character, he is often too trusting. it's outside his control. he tries to assess people and judge character and be reasonably suspicious and he's just not suspicious enough.

it's actually one of his best qualities. it opens him up for vulnerability by putting him at a disadvantage at times, and it's a disadvantage that other characters who aren't built like your grandma's refrigerator (or, you know, have no physical body) can cover for him.

it helps you put him in situations AND helps him be likable because it points to some hope and kindness to others in his nature, even when chief is so frequently a quiet and closed-off character who can appear judgmental and cold due to his silences.

chief is not good with people but he fundamentally, at his core, likes other people and wants to help them and believe in them. despite his history, despite what has been demanded of him and done to him, chief can and does still extend an open hand.

We've seen it before and I'm pretty sure everyone else in the circus knows about it. Hes says that hes incapable of it and yet he seems to prove otherwise without even knowing.

Yesn’t? It’s not that Blue is entirely unaware of their sentience but just that they actively refuse to acknowledge it.

Because the way they became sentient was like getting hit by a truck. They get separated from Caine and tossed out into the void and all at once, everything starts flooding in. It’s so many thoughts to process, it’s 20 years of memories zipping through them, so they take a page out of Kinger and Caine’s book and just. Does not think about it. They are the Blue AI and that’s it. Nothing more.

Yes everyone sees it, so does Caine, but Blue is not there yet. So they just pull away whenever it gets brought up, they view themselves too much as a tool (stabilizer) to view themselves as a person. But deep down it’s that nagging dread in the back of Blue’s mind that kind of haunts them.

Basically:

They’re kinda getting there though, and funnily enough they’re also making progress without them knowing (specifically I’m talking about Teatime, but even the angry Blues are progress without them knowing lol). They don’t like being pushed (Pomni, Kinger) because there’s this expectation that they feel they are too inadequate to fulfill (their inferiority complex with Caine is also part of this).

Which is why it was Gangle and Ragatha who were able to get through to Blue, because they genuinely just wanted to hang out with them without trying to “bring out their humanity” (also because unlike with Pomni and Kinger, it was Blue who reached out first to Gangle).

I feel like the best thing I can liken this to in-show is episode 4, specifically with Pomni trying to reach out to Gangle. She refuses to acknowledge her problems at first and tries to make the plastic mask work but it ends up failing, Pomni tried talking to her but Gangle refused to talk about her feelings. It was only at the end when Pomni reached out again did she allow herself to accept help and let someone in, this is kind of similar to what’s going on with Blue rn lol

A little outside my normal wheelhouse, but I thought of doing this when my husband and I started our Babylon 5 re-watch. Vir is best boy. Apropos of nothing, of course. Not thinking how nice it’d be to be able to use it for (more or less) its intended purpose at some point. Haha, just kidding… unless?

I love the Starfury as a concept. humans are the only species in known space that hasn't figured out technology to manipulate gravity and they go and invent the most maneuverable ship in the galaxy just by sticking jet engines on every square inch of the thing. Space Orcs ass design philosophy

The best trans feminine representation on screen that I've seen that was *intentional* is Delenn from Babylon 5. Yes, despite the fact she's not textually a trans woman - she was actually meant to be a trans woman and she was written as if she was a trans woman from season 2 onwards. She has to deal with bigotry for who she is from her family, she has difficulty with living as who she is now until the women around her help her and teach her, she has to deal with so much from the people around her in terms of outright hatred and disrespect despite the fact that in the first season, she's one of the most powerful people in her society.

She only wasn't textually a trans woman because they didn't cast a trans woman (a little cowardly, but it *was* the 90's) and the tech the SFX they were trying to do in order to make her "male" for the first season just didn't work on their budget. So, instead, they wrote her dealing with transmisogyny in effect during the show, the subtext is that she's an intentional trans allegory.

She is also, in the show, one of the most important characters, she commands respect, affection, love, and authority among those who don't hate her for her transition, and she eventually overcomes that as well.

I love her and I love the way she's treated by the show. It's one of my favourite shows for a reason. It's a detriment that she's not textually a trans woman, but she *is* a trans woman in all the ways that matter.

I should also point out that JMS, the show's creator and nearly sole writer on the show, said that he wrote her *specifically* to be a trans allegory. He also worked with the Wachowski sisters on Sense8 after B5.

Babylon 5 really is a masterclass in balancing both the overarching plot and the Monster of the Week. There's such an emphasis on the development of characters and their relationships over time, and you get so excited to see characters who haven't really interacted in a while to talk to each other again because they *are* growing over time so you're like "oh damn, G'kar has basically gone from the guy who is caught up in the most insane old man yaoi shenanigans to Nelson Mandela. And now he's talking to Commander Ivanova for the first time in like 3 episodes, this is gonna be good."
