ever read a book that is so so so close to being good but fails at almost every opportunity to make interesting choices

this is from World Running Down by Al Hess, a scifi novel about a trans man in post-climate collapse Utah, which is turning into yet another entry on my ever-growing list of novels written by people who are more afraid of being twitter cancelled than they are passionate about writing a moving book

It annoys me soooooo much when a character has a set of morals that is thoughtlessly copy-pasted from the average lefty-liberal queer person today without any explanation—WHY is Valentine so focused on preserving the lives of the salt pirates who are earnestly trying to kill him? WHY is Valentine so invested in respecting the bodily autonomy of androids? WHY are Valentine and Osric and even Ace to some extent so fucking fluent in therapyspeak? These people exist in a world of even greater inequality than our society today. Only Osric has had a formal education, and as far as I can tell, Valentine has had no parents or mentors or other people in his life who could have led him to develop the specific moral compass he operates with. Valentine also explicitly does not read much, doesn’t have an internet connection, and barely talks to anyone other than Ace. I guess he could have learned his philosophy from the other queer folks he’s spent time with??? That’s what I’m going to tell myself lmao

And this book also hits on one of my least favorite things in scifi/fantasy/historical fiction novels: the transposition of our sexual politics onto a world where it makes no sense for them to exist. For example: in this scene, Valentine completely derails a conversation explain the concept of sexual consent when there is absolutely no reason that Osric could expect someone to respect his boundaries in the lawless and might-means-right world of the salt flats. Because Valentine has literally been violently sexually assaulted??? I am not against Valentine warning Osric that someone might try to take advantage of him, but I feel that “hey by the way you should scream at and punch and bite anyone who doesn’t back off when you tell them no” would make SO much more sense as a ten second sex ed talk than “you always have the right to say no if you’re ever uncomfy with something 😄😄😄” like I’m sorry but he literally doesn’t have that right out here. There are no laws. There are no rights. Morally I agree with that sentiment but it is so out of touch with the established worldbuilding that I cannot comprehend how the author added that in without noticing the irony of it. AND on top of that it’s just plain annoying when characters talk to the audience like this lmao I do not, in fact, need a character to stare directly into the camera and explain consent to me. I would’ve given this a pass had it been in the young adult section but nay this was filed in adult trans literature

And that’s not even getting into when the characters start talking about love languages for some godforsaken reason!!!! WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD AND INTERESTING ADDITION. WHO LET THIS HAPPEN. WHO PUT JUNKY PSEUDO PSYCHOLOGY IN MY FUN AND ALMOST-SEXY SCIFI ROMP

#this makes it sound like I really hate this book lmao #but tbh I don’t mind it? Even if it is kind of annoying it’s definitely still a cut above the average queer novel that shares these flaws #I hate to be mean but man. no wonder people only know like five different gay novels #the overwhelming majority of the queer fiction I’ve had has sucked unbelievable amounts of ass #maybe I’ll make a rec list sometime of all the queer books I’ve read that haven’t made me want to put my head through the wall #anyway. thank you for listening lmaooooo #world running down #al hess #Great Eurotrip Readathon 2025
